Java John's is the perfect little spot to start your day right. I had an awesome bagel breakfast sandwich--super tasty, fresh, and satisfying. I loved it so much I grabbed another to go! Friendly vibes, quick service, and seriously good food. Can't wait to come back.

If you enjoy the thrill of an unexpected soaking wet butt, this is the coffee shop for you. Their outdoor seat cushions appear dry, however, like a sponge, compress and release hidden puddles as soon as you sit down. After soaking our own pants, we watched several other people do the same--some heading straight into a two-hour movie with wet clothes, while an elderly couple had to walk home to change. A customer complained, and staff admitted they knew about the issue but did nothing. Later, someone put warning signs on the chairs, and only then did an employee bring them inside. We thought the problem was solved, but the very next morning, the wet cushions were back outside - looking dry, but still hiding their little ambush puddles inside. Assuming the owner didn't know, I brought it up to her. She knew about the problem, indicating that "it had been raining" and that customers should "take personal responsibility" for the surprise derriére drenching. Her response not sitting well with me, I kindly asked how someone could take responsibility in this situation. Without missing a beat, the owner responded that she's selling the business and doesn't care about the chairs. "Could you take them inside?" I asked. Her solution? "If it bothers you, buy the business." I even offered to buy the chairs to solve the problem, but she smugly told me they "come with the business." Meanwhile, locals and regulars are walking around town looking like they peed themselves. Apparently humiliating customers is just part of the experience here. If you want a coffee shop that values basic customer care, look elsewhere. If you want to roll the dice on walking away with wet buns and a side of public embarrassment, pull up a chair.

A yummy sandwich! The fresh lemonade was also delicious!

The food and service here was great! I'm looking forward to returning and trying other things from the counter.

Walt from Walt's Adventures reporting in from Nevada City, California. Java Johns is a awesome little shop in the heart of Nevada City. Besides offering customized coffees, their specialty are custom built sandwiches, pastries, and is a wonderful stop. The coffee I had was perfectly crafted. The Cinnamon roll (not pictured) was pretty good. 4 of 5 because some of the chairs were a bit wobbly. This eatery really cares for its customers and their community. If you are in town, stop at Java Johns

Food and coffee are awesome. What's is poor is the way you are spoken to by the tall lanky dude behind the counter. I get it that it's almost closing time but come on. This is the third time its happened so its a pattern. I ordered a 16oz drink and it was half foam. Aside from that, great place.

This is my first time here and I'm impressed! The lady behind the counter is really nice and had my order ready really quick even if she was on her own and had several other customers. My bagel (sorry I was hungry and forgot to take a picture before I bit into it) is crispy and delicious. My chai is foamed to perfection and the ambiance is so cozy and welcoming. Would definitely come back!

In all honesty, the hostess staff told us they could not guarantee a booth. However, when we arrived, we were told that all the booths were full, and we were seated in the main dining room. I walked into the bar to take a look at the booths and one was completely empty. Disappointing. The menu was creative and had something for everyone from meat eaters to vegetarians and vegans. Shout out to server Sierra, who was friendly and happy to make recommended and answered all of our questions with a smile. The setting is open and a little loud, but being in the National Hotel, the aesthetic flowed well with the hotel decor. The disappointing part of my party's experience was the fact that service took sooo long. We ordered an appetizer which came out with our main entrees. And drinks that we ordered before any of the food came out, came long after our meal had been served and only after we we asked what had happened to them. We were told that the bar was very busy and that's what delayed our drinks. However, with such a popular hotel, you think they would plan for this in advance. Overall, I would dine here again, but not during the busy dinner service. I would come during off hours only or be seated for dinner at 5 PM before the rush.

There's a menu that has everything from breakfast to dinner with every cultural food imaginable. The food is actually very good! Unfortunately I don't think it's going to succeed because the service is pretty bad! On both occasions I've been there they've been understaffed and the wait for ANYTHING from the servers seemed LONG. But by far my biggest complaint is the ambiance. We came at 7:00, not closing time and from the minute we sat down there were clanging dishes. banging bar stools, crashing noises coming from the bar, as things were getting cleaned up. Then came the sweeper around us and the PINE SOL smell as the floor was cleaned under our feet as we ate our dinner! I was stunned and it was nauseating. It was hard to get either of the server's attention once our food came (as there was lots of cleaning to do!) but we eventually got a to go box and our check. Lotsa luck

The server took the order of the family next to us first even though we had arrived well before them. Once they finally did take our order (which happened about 30-45 mins after we arrived), we had to wait over an hour for our food. Our son's oatmeal alone took almost an hour. Oatmeal! If you are a parent of a toddler, you know this is a nightmare. We knew we'd have to keep him entertained throughout regardless, but it took my husband and I three different walks with our son before they even checked in on us to tell us the food was on its way. Then they brought the food out one dish at a time so we couldn't even really eat together. We heard the server say they were very busy and while I empathize, this is not excusable. The food was delicious but it was not worth the very long wait. I have never waited that long for food and I very rarely leave reviews. But after that experience, I felt compelled to leave a review. We should've left when we realized they were taking a long time even taking our order. We will not come here again unfortunately. When I opened the container, it was obvious it had been sitting there for a while. The sandwich was sweaty, and half of it was soggy. Apparently, they had forgotten to bring it to me. By that point, my mocha was already gone before I had even started eating. The BLT itself was made on regular-sized sandwich bread, and the tomatoes and bacon were good. But $34 for a basic BLT and a small iced mocha is outrageous, especially considering the wait and the condition of the sandwich when I finally received it. I will not be going back.
