8/29/26: First and last experience at Java Johns. The food and coffee were fine, but the man behind the counter was extremely rude. My friend and I stopped in at around 9:30 am - we thought we were greeted with a friendly 'how are you doing?' - when we replied 'great, thanks how about you?', he turned on us and said 'No! WHAT are you doing? What are you ordering?'. We had just walked in and hadn't even had a moment to look at the menu. We ordered our food and coffee drinks - exact same breakfast sandwich, but on different bagels. When he called my name to hand us the order, he was rude again - this time about which sandwich we each ordered. Dude, just give us the bagels and we can figure out which is the sesame bagel. It's not that complicated. For what it's worth, I'm white and my friend is black. Unfortunately, it made me wonder if this hostility was race motivated. And sure enough, i see another review from a black person having a bad experience the week before. We didn't stay long enough to see if he was just as rude to everyone, couldn't get out of there fast enough. Stick with Communal Cafe across the street. read more

Java Johns seemed like a cute little cafe upon first glance. The place was bustling, full of energy and life. Sandwich Lady was working hard toasting the bread and getting the premium sliced meats ready. Coffee Boy was in the back steaming up hot liquids at a rapid pace. However, Mustache Man was at the register and was very rude to the customers. His eyes were glazed over like he just got done watching too much Big Bang Theory. He was probably feeling incredibly smart from watching such a complicated show about science. He came up with the brilliant idea of taking a break when the cafe was at its busiest. Sandwich Lady and Coffee Boy were upset, but they did their best to pick up the slack. The line was long. The stress was high. Mustache Man was gone. I assume he left to go work his second job, folding and assembling Little Caesar's pizza boxes. He probably enjoys that job more because he doesn't have to look at other humans. It's just him, a quiet room, an old electrical panel and his precious cardboard. Nobody asking for a double latte or a pork bagel sandwich. It's truly his happy place. I think he should continue folding those boxes and let Lord Java John hire a new employee that doesn't have a mustache. read more

If you enjoy the thrill of an unexpected soaking wet butt, this is the coffee shop for you. Their outdoor seat cushions appear dry, however, like a sponge, compress and release hidden puddles as soon as you sit down. After soaking our own pants, we watched several other people do the same--some heading straight into a two-hour movie with wet clothes, while an elderly couple had to walk home to change. A customer complained, and staff admitted they knew about the issue but did nothing. Later, someone put warning signs on the chairs, and only then did an employee bring them inside. We thought the problem was solved, but the very next morning, the wet cushions were back outside - looking dry, but still hiding their little ambush puddles inside. Assuming the owner didn't know, I brought it up to her. She knew about the problem, indicating that "it had been raining" and that customers should "take personal responsibility" for the surprise derriére drenching. Her response not sitting well with me, I kindly asked how someone could take responsibility in this situation. Without missing a beat, the owner responded that she's selling the business and doesn't care about the chairs. "Could you take them inside?" I asked. Her solution? "If it bothers you, buy the business." I even offered to buy the chairs to solve the problem, but she smugly told me they "come with the business." Meanwhile, locals and regulars are walking around town looking like they peed themselves. Apparently humiliating customers is just part of the experience here. If you want a coffee shop that values basic customer care, look elsewhere. If you want to roll the dice on walking away with wet buns and a side of public embarrassment, pull up a chair. read more

This place is skating by on the fact that they are in downtown Nevada city and they know that stupid Nevada city residents will go there just because it's in downtown NC and therefor makes them feel cool. Went in today to pick up an order as a favor to a friend and there were two staff members on the clock. One of them was taking orders, making food and drinks (slow as a sloth but at least she was trying) while the other employee (short, blond ish with accent) came out from the back, saw the other employee struggling, and instead of jumping in to help she decided to talk crap about a homeless person to a customer. I stood there for 15 minutes waiting for the order while this employee just talked to customers. Never asked if the other girl needed help. She couldn't care less. Let me be clear that this is not an isolated experience. This is the standard level of service and care at this establishment on a regular basis. The owner clearly does not care about quality service or product. I have seen her purchasing her bagels and cream cheese at Safeway. They are nothing special. Three out of four of her employees either get overwhelmed with more than one drink order or literally will stand there not doing a damn thing until the other employee comes back from break. Consistency is important to me which is why I won't be returning to Java John's. I ordered a large half caff latte and was charged $4.25 for what appeared to be a 16 oz drink. About 45 minutes later I ordered another large half caff latte and was charged $4.75 by the same staff member. This time my drink was served in what appeared to be a 12 oz cup. If the coffee was spectacular, I would have pulled the first cup from the trash and asked the about the discrepancies. It was 102-degrees outside (and I was the bozo wearing a tie because we were headed to what I was told was a formal church service), but it was comfortable inside. While camping, we came into town to grab breakfast. They have a great selection of drinks, pastries and food to choose from. We had an iced mocha and an iced vanilla latte with coconut milk. Both were really good! Appreciate that their espresso isn't acidic and really balances out the syrup and milks. Also thankful that they had a variety of milk alternatives.
