This cafe was hidden away in an industrial neighborhood. I didn't expect it to be this cozy and this inviting when I first waked up, but looks can be deceiving. There was a decent size amount of people in the cafe, but what hit me right away was the smell of bacon. Ohhhhhh! It was divine! Was greeted immediately upon entering and was helped with my order--a 16oz mocha--right away. It gave me a minute to look at the food and other pastries available. Everything looked fresh and homemade. Take note that there were a lot of gluten free options here which is wonderful news for anyone having to watch their diet. My coffee was warm and not chalky like some mochas can be. I wish I could have stayed and sat for a spell, but I had to get on the road. Looking forward to making time for breakfast next time I am up in the area. read more

What a great place in Grass Valley! Visited August 16th..see receipt. This coffee place is on Maltman Drive in a very small shopping area. I used to go here for years after swim practice...wow it has grown! I ordered an Americano and a gluten free cookie to go. I was surprised to see such a large selection of breakfast items. They also have another area for their burritos ( looked really big!) I am not a big eater so i opted for a cookie..soft and delicious!.I forgot how big it is inside..good place to meet friends! Self serve coffee also available. Some outdoor seating also available. Cutely decorated with friendly employees ( thanks Penny!). Definitely will be back to try one of those burritos! This is my favorite coffee shop in Grass Valley. Family-owned vibe with friendly locals. Connected to a nice little bookstore, so that's pretty great. Instead of the usual coffee shop, purple-haired, leftist crowd...the patronage here is veterans, law enforcement, and other polite locals. Good coffee and a large selection of food. Shopping local keeps your dollars circulating in your own community which is good for everyone in this city. Shopping at a corporate coffee shop (Starschmucks & Dutch Bros) sends your dollars out of state which depletes the local economy. Shop local and help your neighbor. read more

Parking is limited and big vehicles are hard to maneuver around due to poorly thought out However the effort to make it work is evident More outside seating could be put into play Food is made daily on the premises and very good and selection well thought out!! Amazing welcoming atmosphere, excellent coffee, and perfect pastries. My daughter and I went there for a coffee and treat before her dance class and it is obvious they are loved by the community by the number of people who came in for coffee and a chat. The owner was there and knew most customers by name. I also love that they sell local made products from various artists. It was an all around great experience and we will be back. I wish they had longer hours, but I'm thankful they have found a way to keep the doors open when so many local businesses have closed read more

Found this gem while speaking at a camp near Nevada City, CA. Great ambience with the attached bookstore. Sadly books have become somewhat irrelevant with the internet and online books but the charm of this little shop is definitely a stitch in time. The staff aka barista's were genuinely good and nice people. i only had a cappuccino but it was great! i am here for a week and can pretty much guarantee that i will be sipping coffee here again. I try to support the majority of locally owned Nevada County coffee shops out here because several have closed in the past couple of years despite the local board approving another corporate owned shop coming into town (sigh). Of the locally owned shops, Sierra Mountain is one of my favorites because of it's comfortable environment to work, hang with the kids, or grab/go. They have delicious in-house made pastries and breakfast burritos. Penny, the owner, is super friendly and always there working her butt off, which shows how much she cares about her patrons and the business. read more

Open your doors to more diverse groups and I would feel better about spending my money here and contributing to your neighborhood business. I live in your neighborhood! It's been a while since I've been here, and I'm very disappointed. My bagel was smashed and had about three molecules of cream cheese on it. My mocha was super sweet and tasted like inexpensive hot chocolate with water - no coffee flavor, no whole milk mouth feel. Plus, there were three staff there and they were visiting in the back for a few minutes before they decided to come out and help the customers that were waiting. Probably will not be back. read more

This place was so darling. On Friday night my boyfriend played a show inside the book portion of Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters. I was blown away that a place so cute would open their doors to a bunch of crazy young punk kids, and I'm very glad that everything went smoothly. I didn't really spend much time in the cafe section, but I was able to browse their awesome selection of used books. I can't wait to come back and check it out under normal circumstances, there were some real gems at decent prices. read more

Oh my, Oh my! The best coffee I've ever had in my LIFE!! Well, maybe that's a little dramatic, but nonetheless, amazing coffee. Though I don't live in Grass Valley anymore, I make sure that I have enough of their coffee in my freezer to last me awhile. My husband and I also got many of our friends hooked on the stuff... every time we head up the hill, our friends ask us to get a pound or two. My favorite blends would be House and Guatemala. They have YUMMY pastries that are made fresh by their staff. And they offer breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and lunch items (quiche, salads, sandwiches, etc.). I also love that the coffee shop hooks up to a bookstore where they hold events... like salsa lessons, readings, and I believe live music. I truly miss the community feeling that saturated the Grass Valley area and I 110% miss Sierra Mountain!! =( read more

I love Sierra Mountain. It's weird, it's in an industrial weird location, it's next to a man-antique store and a hunting shop and car mechanics. But it's got a great book selection of used books to browse, all my fave girls work there, and they all have great attitudes and give me EXACTLY the bagel I was dreaming of. The coffee here is delicious too. Their espresso is yummy and perfect but sometimes the machine isn't consistent. I don't care, I love the atmosphere too much to care. Was just denied access with my service dog . They said that she was required to have ID and a vest .I pulled up the ADA.gov site and showed them that it was not required .they then said that state law says otherwise . State law does not Trump federal. I will be filing a Ada complaint and taking legal action. To think I could have been a potential new regular....ill be taking my money elsewhere. read more

The only reason I don't give SMCR a 5 star review is because I have had better espresso drinks and bought better beans from the best places in Chicago and San Francisco. So for me, a 4 star rating is a very high recommendation. I am picky about what coffee beans I use, and SMCR consistently delivers a very high standard. I know that Sandy at SMCR puts a lot of effort into acquiring beans from exceptional seasonal crops. Then they do a fine job of roasting. All beans are organic. The major competitor to SMCR in Nevada County, Caroline's, simply doesn't know how to roast, period. It's sad. In Nevada and Placer counties, I don't know of a better coffee roaster than SMCR. In my opinion, their espresso drinks are drinkable but not at the same high standard as their beans, but as other reviewers have noted, the ambiance is cool (a 70's vibe). ADVICE: If you go there to buy beans, not everyone on staff is able to discuss their offerings, so you may need to simply ask to speak with the person who can best explain what they currently have to offer. read more

Lately, I've not been enjoying this place. I go here whenever my internet is down at my house, and need to use internet. Thanks to the two guys who park their butts here and play online video games all freaking day, the internet is extremely slow. It takes literally 5 minutes to open up my email, no joke. It's ridiculous. Secondly, I think their coffee drinks are a bit overpriced. Over 5 bucks for a medium almond milk latte? That's a bit much. Also, there's always some idiot talking politics and thinking their opinion on politics is revolutionary. Give me a break. And, yes I'm crabby. Great coffee and even better bakery items. If I'm in the mood for a scone, I go here. They're made like dense yummy muffins, nice and moist and full of flavor. Brown sugar scone is my fave but their seasonal mandarin scone is awesome too. The coffee is good, some of the best in town. They are very generous with the chocolate in their mochas. A big selection for regular coffee too. Lots of tables and you can go next door to the Open Book with your food or drink for even more tables (and buy a good book while you're there!) read more

Either this is some of the best coffee I have ever had, or a weekend after camping and drinking instant coffee is making me biased. Surprisingly she was open on Memorial day. The owner was really friendly, we enjoyed the short conversation we had with her. If I lived here I would love to come hang out here, drink coffee, and read a few books.
