We've been going to Javier's for more than 10 years between Spectrum, Crystal Cove, and Vegas, so this was especially disappointing. We had a 7:00 reservation for my birthday, called ahead to say we'd be about 20 minutes late, and were told there was a 15-minute grace period. We arrived around 7:20-7:25 and were turned away. I understand policies, but this was a Tuesday night, and the attitude was awful.. no warmth, no effort to help, and zero acknowledgment that we had called ahead or that it was my birthday. Simply put, nasty. My wife rebooked us for 8:00, so we waited at the bar. At dinner, we ordered margaritas and they were genuinely terrible. Not just "not our taste," but shockingly bad for a restaurant that has always been known for its margaritas. We sent them back and asked for beers instead. That's where the service really lost us. Our waitress didn't ask what was wrong, didn't apologize, didn't seem concerned, and made absolutely no effort to fix the experience. She just dropped the Modelos on the table with an attitude that basically said, "Fine, you're a nuisance, here's your beer." The food itself was great, but the service and overall hospitality were genuinely terrible. They also completely forgot the birthday despite it being noted on the reservation. I normally tip 25-30%, but tonight I left 15% and wrote, "Thanks for forgetting my birthday" on the check. That pretty much summed it up. read more

This place is always packed despite the enormous restaurant and endless tables. The menu has great options from Mexican food to steakhouse favorites. I got the green chicken enchiladas which were yummy. My husband got a steak and loved it. The chips and guac are always fan favs too. It's comfortable seating and despite the crowds, you can still have conversations without it being too loud. Service was lovely. My wife got the Steak Picado and loved it. Our friend got the Fideo Del Mar, essentially seafood pasta in a pink sauce. She loved it. The hand cut thick fries were awesome. As for drinks, the Javier's Margarita was great, the Casa Margarita was flavorless, the Pina Margarita was phenomenal, the Espresso Martini (not Marco's style) was great. We stopped during the day this time and were sat in the bar area, super fun! My hubby had chicken enchiladas and I had their Salmon Salad. I wish there was more salad but the size of the salmon made up for it. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned really well. The unlimited chips and salsa were dangerously good. I always tell myself I'll stop after a few chips, but somehow I never do--and this salsa was definitely the reason why! Every server we interacted with was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the La Tablita and the ceviche trio (ahi, shrimp, and octopus), and everything was honestly really good. The jalapeño cocktail was also delicious. There was a nice kick to it, but wasn't too spicy. We were seated in the back by the patio, and the remodel is seriously gorgeous. First off, the interior is absolutely gorgeous with elevated yet tropical vibes, also right next to the ocean - felt like I was back in Cancun! Our party was a little chaotic since we brought a cake & some props for my friend's bday but the staff were super friendly and accommodating! They even used their mini flashlights when they saw us getting flash photos or using selfie lights. The space is also large enough that there are several spots to take photos where you're not in anyone's way & most customers were unbothered, even wishing my friend a happy bday or hyping her up. Each of us ordered different dishes and loved all! My favorite was the shrimp tacos which were seasoned so well it didn't need a dipping sauce. Very fresh & tasty!! The restaurant after the remodel is beautiful, but the bar seems to block most of the ocean view. Parking was doable since our dinner was Saturday 5:30pm before too many people get there. We ordered several appetizers, such as Trio de Ceviche, Empanadas, and 6 entrees to share between the 8 of us. Food is not bad, but very overpriced. Especially the Trio de Ceviche, the pescado tastes muddy. I would have returned it if I knew the dish cost $75. It was not edible. The traditional Mexican Guisados and Platillos would be my preference. For dessert, the Tres Leches Cake was very good. At times, they feel close to being a "ripoff", but the ambiance, ocean adjacent location, and overall experience help justify it. That said, the "scene" isn't quite what it used to be. Javier's has long been a staple of Newport Beach culture and will probably remain that way forever. Years ago, it felt like the place to see and be seen. Today, it feels more like a local institution than a hotspot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. As a family with several vegetarians, one thing that has always bothered us is the pricing. Charging extra for beans and rice often makes certain vegetarian dishes more expensive than entrées that include meat, which feels hard to justify. My family's favorite vegetarian option is the spinach enchiladas, while my go to order is the three item combination plate with a chicken enchilada, taco, and chile relleno. While many people argue that South of Nick's serves better Mexican food, I respectfully disagree. South of Nick's may be more affordable, but I still think Javier's serves the best Mexican food in town. It's a great choice for date nights, family dinners, celebrations, or anyone looking for a classic Newport Beach experience. The service and overall food quality may have slipped slightly over the years, but Javier's remains my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. We came here on Mother's Day- they opened a few hours earlier than they normally do because it is insanely busy on this day (obvs). I made sure to make reservations about a month in advance for 11 am. There was 8 of us total, we were seated in the best seats I could have dreamed of. Our view of the ocean in the back just really made it seem like we were on another tropical island eating brunch. Our waitress was so attentive and patient with us so thank you! And the food, I mean it's been years since I've been to Javier's and that was at the spectrum location. Nothing was disappointing. The queso fundido was incredibly cheesy and perfect with warm tortillas, endless chips, and from the look of everyone's faces each bite was savored entirely. They don't have a kids menu but they are very accommodating and able to make a brc burrito with chicken and chicken quesadillas for the little ones. The one thing we noticed was that the napkins were almost pilling and left white residual fabric on your clothes, but I mean that's just one thing that really you can ignore unless you wear all black BUT.. food makes up for it and really that's what you are here for. Perhaps because the food took so long that we filled up on chips and salsa. Trio de Ceviche: Fish ceviche was boring, lacked citrus/tartness. Preferred the shrimp for this reason. When we asked for the check, a different server handled the payment. We split the bill using cash and three cards (which is their max). I carefully counted and explained exactly how we wanted everything divided. After going to the back, he returned saying we were short $97. Then after "double checking," he came back again claiming we were actually short $150 and that it needed to be paid in cash. At that point, it felt very off. I asked to speak with a manager, explained everything clearly, and after they reviewed it, we were suddenly told everything was fine.
