Once we finally got seated, our waiter was great and was very attentive. The food was great as usual, we absolutely DEVOURED the chips and guacamole! I had the Enchiladas Suizas which was a first time for me, I enjoyed them a lot and they had a little kick to it but nothing I couldn't handle. I've been coming here with my family for years, celebrating countless birthdays and special occasions, so I figured it was time to update my review. One of the biggest improvements is the remodel they completed a few years ago. The restaurant feels much larger, more open, and more modern. The atmosphere has always been a huge part of Javier's appeal. The food has consistently been good, but the prices have climbed higher and higher over the years. At times, they feel close to being a "ripoff", but the ambiance, ocean adjacent location, and overall experience help justify it. That said, the "scene" isn't quite what it used to be. Javier's has long been a staple of Newport Beach culture and will probably remain that way forever. Years ago, it felt like the place to see and be seen. Today, it feels more like a local institution than a hotspot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. As a family with several vegetarians, one thing that has always bothered us is the pricing. Charging extra for beans and rice often makes certain vegetarian dishes more expensive than entrées that include meat, which feels hard to justify. My family's favorite vegetarian option is the spinach enchiladas, while my go to order is the three item combination plate with a chicken enchilada, taco, and chile relleno. While many people argue that South of Nick's serves better Mexican food, I respectfully disagree. South of Nick's may be more affordable, but I still think Javier's serves the best Mexican food in town. It's a great choice for date nights, family dinners, celebrations, or anyone looking for a classic Newport Beach experience. The service and overall food quality may have slipped slightly over the years, but Javier's remains my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. The moment you walk in, you're hit by how beautiful the venue is--the architecture, the upscale coastal decor, and the incredible ocean-side ambiance make it feel like a luxury resort vacation. It's the perfect spot for a special night out. * Taquitos: An absolute MUST-get. They are served uniquely--bunched tightly together, standing straight up, and drenched in a phenomenal green sauce. They look awesome on the table and taste even better. * Trio de enchiladas: My wife got the Trio de enchiladas del mar - shrimp, crab and lobster. It was absolutely awesome. Rich, flavorful, and incredibly fresh. * Filete Ladrillo: Perfect, show-stopping 16 oz bone-in ribeye, served with pasilla asado, refritos, and crispy smashed potatoes. We came here on Mother's Day- they opened a few hours earlier than they normally do because it is insanely busy on this day (obvs). I made sure to make reservations about a month in advance for 11 am. There was 8 of us total, we were seated in the best seats I could have dreamed of. Our view of the ocean in the back just really made it seem like we were on another tropical island eating brunch. Our waitress was so attentive and patient with us so thank you! And the food, I mean it's been years since I've been to Javier's and that was at the spectrum location. Nothing was disappointing. The queso fundido was incredibly cheesy and perfect with warm tortillas, endless chips, and from the look of everyone's faces each bite was savored entirely. They don't have a kids menu but they are very accommodating and able to make a brc burrito with chicken and chicken quesadillas for the little ones. The one thing we noticed was that the napkins were almost pilling and left white residual fabric on your clothes, but I mean that's just one thing that really you can ignore unless you wear all black BUT.. food makes up for it and really that's what you are here for. The food is upscale, traditional Mexican that reminded me of a classic carne asada at home, with sides like guacamole, grilled onions, and spicy salsa, but elevated with a refined touch. The music was very loud, the front of the restaurant was a bit busy and crowded and the dining area felt way less demure than what I'm used to. We often found ourselves trying to yell over the music. The food was very well made. Chips came out warm, steak and white came out fresh. The service was exceptional. Our server (Evaristo) was hospitable, patient, responsive and made sure we enjoyed our food. Overall the craftsmanship and serving of the food was great but the busy, loud feeling I got while in the restaurant threw off my experience. We went here for my cousins birthday. I would give the atmosphere a 5 star review because it is very pretty and elegantly designed. My drink was pretty good I will say! My ceviche was not great. My husbands food was better than mine but for the price it's definitely not worth coming back. I hadn't been back since the remodel, and the transformation is impressive. The restaurant is significantly larger with ample seating, beautiful décor, and a stunning ambiance. From our table, we caught a partial ocean view, and as the sun set, the staff lit the patio torches which was a lovely atmospheric touch. We visited on a Wednesday evening and were surprised to find it packed but thankfully we had reservations. I started with the tamarind margarita, which was a perfect balance of sweet and sour. We then moved on to the guacamole and the Aguachile de Camarón. The guacamole was creamy and delicious. The Aguachile, however, had a slight bitterness to it which likely came from the cucumbers though the shrimp itself was fresh and we finished it regardless. For my main, I ordered the Corte Vaquero and was disappointed to find the steak bland and dry despite being cooked medium rare. A friend had a similar experience with the pork tomahawk. We ended the meal with the churros, served alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream -- enjoyable, but nothing memorable. I've always been a fan of Javier's and have visited their Irvine location as well. In hindsight, I should have stuck to what I know they do best: their enchiladas, appetizers, and salads. Came here to celebrate a birthday. The atmosphere is what you come for. Beautiful interior, dim and moody during dinner (my favorite), and right on the coast. Parking is horrendous, but there is valet or you can drive farther into the plaza and park for free and walk 200 feet. Thursday night was absolutely packed, I thought it was the weekend. Food is standard. The one notable item was specifically the steak in our La Tablita platter. Very smokey and tender. Otherwise, the platter is $120 and comes with rice, beans, two slices of cheese, some guac, canned pickled jalapenos... underwhelming! This is described as serving 2, but for us it served 5 girlies. Perhaps because the food took so long that we filled up on chips and salsa. Trio de Ceviche: Fish ceviche was boring, lacked citrus/tartness. Preferred the shrimp for this reason. We got 2 of the same ceviche because they ran out of other options by 8pm. The drinks are also VERY strong. I'd come back for drinks and ambiance and special occasions. Javier's is absolutely stunning from the moment you arrive the exterior alone sets the tone for a really upscale experience. We checked in right away since we had a reservation, and although we did have to wait about 15-20 minutes, it wasn't too bad. Just a heads up, they do require your full party to be present before being seated. Once inside, the ambiance is dim, elegant, and perfect for a date night or celebrating something special. After being seated, they brought out chips and salsa along with the menus. Service throughout the night was attentive, with servers checking in often to make sure we had everything we needed. The food did take about 30-40 minutes to arrive. I ordered the chicken enchilada and taco place with rice and beans which was good overall. I'd give it about a 7/10 but the green salsa was a bit disappointing. It tasted more factory made than fresh, which didn't quite match the upscale vibe. The biggest issue came at the end. When we asked for the check, a different server handled the payment. We split the bill using cash and three cards (which is their max). I carefully counted and explained exactly how we wanted everything divided. After going to the back, he returned saying we were short $97. Then after "double checking," he came back again claiming we were actually short $150 and that it needed to be paid in cash. At that point, it felt very off. I asked to speak with a manager, explained everything clearly, and after they reviewed it, we were suddenly told everything was fine. They took care of us very well. The atmosphere is sexy and fun. The service was great. And the food was just as good! I got the seafood enchiladas, which were *chef's kiss. Which prove challenging when trying to hear each other at the extremely large table, they placed us at. The server told us that there were no other options for a party of our size. Still one of my favorite restaurants in OC, but they have some work to do! They reconstructed a while back so the interior is gorgeous! Really classy and authentic - you can dress up or down. Food and drinks are delicious. Hate that they changed their salsa recipe in the last year or so, but it's still good - less flavor but more spicy heat. Also dislike changes to the chips - they've become thicker and harder - taste good when they're hot but not so great once they cool. My favorite entrees are the Costilla de Res and the enchiladas Sonora. Amazing. Wish they had better dessert options - after 10-15 years of Javier's to this day I don't order dessert and that's specific to Javier's - I love dessert. Service has almost always been good for us but it's inconsistent. Sometimes you get people who are on top of things, sometimes you get people who don't listen or forget about you. They have valet parking, but since it's in a shopping center, if you don't mind walking a minute or two, you don't have to valet. This was my first time here and I was told even before the remodel, it was really nice. I like that when you walk in, it's a little more dim and there's a bar area with a nice chill vibe. Then around the corner, it's partially open and lighter with another bar. You can pretty much get whatever vibe you're going for. It did get chilly in the evening at the open area so definitely bring a sweater. The margaritas were delicious, as were the quesadilla and sides. On Thursday, April 16, I dined at the Newport location with family and friends who had traveled from Las Vegas and Texas to celebrate a birthday and engagement. Unfortunately, what should have been a special evening turned into a very uncomfortable and disappointing experience. From the moment we were seated, my family felt they were being treated differently because of the color of their skin. I was the only Hispanic person at the table, and it quickly became noticeable that our server, Mauricio, shifted his demeanor when interacting with me compared to the rest of my party. He would smile, engage, and check in with me, but he largely ignored the others at the table. We were a party of six, yet the rest of my group was barely acknowledged throughout the evening. My friend asked if they carried mint for an east side martini and he said NO... but our dessert had mint on it??... Service overall was inconsistent and inattentive. We rarely saw our server, except when it came time to clear plates. I even went up to the bar to order myself a drink and the bartender rolled his eyes that "I'm not allowed to do that, I have to order from my server." When my friend attempted to order dessert and asked for a recommendation, Mauricio responded rudely with, "Well, what do you want?"--which felt dismissive and unprofessional, especially to those of us who have experience in the restaurant industry. The atmosphere only worsened as the night went on. Staff members gathered near the bar, looking over at our table, laughing, and appearing to make comments about us. It made us feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. One of my friends decided to speak with Carlos, the manager, to address our concerns. While explaining our experience, Carlos repeatedly insisted that they do not discriminate, rather than actively listening or addressing the situation with empathy. During this conversation, security (Manny) interrupted to ask if everything was okay, which felt unnecessary and added to the discomfort. Shortly after, Manny approached me separately to ask the same question, but when I explained that my friend was raising concerns about our service, he simply said "okay" and walked away. I eventually joined the conversation with Carlos and expressed how upsetting the experience had been. I asked directly whether the treatment we received was due to my family being Black, as the looks and behavior directed at our table were impossible to ignore. This was especially disheartening given that we were celebrating both an engagement and a birthday--occasions that were completely overlooked by the staff. The location is gorgeous and the vibe is upscale and energetic. It is a total hotspot, so you definitely need to get a reservation or arrive very early if you want a table. I came here for the first time on a Saturday at noon, we had reservations and they took us in to be seated almost immediately as we checked in. We wanted seating with an ocean view and they gladly accommodated us. The menu had a plethora of food options to choose from. It's probably one of the most gorgeous restaurants in Newport Beach. First time at Javier's and the remodel is stunning!! TONS of seating everywhere with a bar inside and outside. Great views all around and beautiful interior design. My husband made reservations months in advance as it's one of the busiest restaurants in Newport. We checked in with the hostess and waited a couple minutes before getting seated. We started with chips and salsa, guac and taquitos. Both were delicious, taquitos are stuffed with chicken and sit on a delicious green sauce. Guac was another tasty starter. Our drinks we had were the cucumber margarita, jalapeño margaritas and mezcal margarita. 10/10 Main dishes were delicious as well. We got the enchilada trio that included crab, maine lobster and shrimp; as well as the enchilada and taco plate with rice and beans. We ended the night with their Mexican chocolate ice cream (not pictured) and espresso martinis. The chocolate martini is divine!! 10/10 I'll definitely be getting it again next time as well as trying the tres leches cake. read more
