Have driven past this place many times and, when out of town guests requested Mexican food, we decided to give it a try. So glad we did!! Quiet little patio that is just off the PCH in CDM. Staff were super friendly and the food was delicious - fresh and flavorful. It's not fancy but a great place for great food, drinks and conversation!

I love enchiladas Suiza and this Suiza is probably the best I've ever had. Fluffy tortilla, grilled chicken, balanced green sauce, and lots of sour cream! All their enchiladas sound good and I will totally come back and try more. The mole enchiladas in particular sounds amazing. Wonderful outdoor seating area. Good service. Casual. Street parking. Please come and create your own adventure.

Me and my family ate here and honestly the Mexican food is not that good. There are places that are way better. Going to give it 2 stars rather than one because they have good service and a good ambiance. However, my sister and her boyfriend got sick from the food shortly after and both threw up. After the food me and my boyfriend felt bloated and had slight stomach pain/discomfort. The food appears that it's not made freshly. No good seasonings on the food and some of the food is bland (especially the fajitas). I got an enchilada and the sauce taste like it's made from the can and the beans taste like they come from the can as well. Honestly, not coming back again and not worth the price.

Santa Barbara enchiladas and Green chili tamales

Delicious! There is a reason this restaurant has been around for more than 100 years. We had the Santa Barbara enchiladas and green chile corn tamales and took it to the beach - perfect lunch very tasty! Ask for the habanero spicy sauce If you want to kick, and beware. The guacamole was okay. Traditional Mexican interior if you chose to dine in with patio seating.

Green corn tamal, roasted pork enchilada with green sauce, cilantro rice and beans

Service & staff were on point. Food was delicious. I got the combo with a green corn tamale and an enchilada which I added roasted pork and green sauce. That was my favorite! I also subbed for the cilantro rice instead of the traditional Spanish rice. Everything was delicious. The tamale was so soft and tender. I tried a regular pork tamale with red sauce but much preferred the green corn!

Stopped by today for happy-hour. Had the special margarita, taquitos and tortilla soup. Everything was well prepared and tasty. The restaurant is on PCH but there is plenty of parking in the rear. The only draw-back was there were no chips/salsa offered. Perhaps, you have to ask???? Anyway, not a deal-killer. Service was quick and scene was perfect. Oh yeah.....the do offer free wi-fi and the code is 1923, so since I was solo I needed to catch up on a project I am working on.

Jose luis and Juan Trujillo at the bar we're such a delight. From the moment I walked in the offered great menu recommendations. The service was impeccable and they put their heart in their work. Cocktails were well made and Jose even showed me a few items off the menu. I love spicy...when he learned this he offered a few offers off the menu and it was perfect! So happy with the food quality...filet mignon Fajitas with scallops (I added extra) and it was wonderful. Talk about sea meats land! Loved it! Recommend fully! I will come back for their happy hour. Great spicy habanero sauce if you ask.

The service was excellent, attentive, friendly, and welcoming throughout our visit. A funny side note: We had purchased two $20 gift cards from a friend about 1-2 years ago and had been meaning to visit ever since. When we arrived, we realized we couldn't find the gift cards anywhere. They must have been misplaced or lost at some point, and neither of us is sure when that happened! Despite our missing gift cards, we had a fantastic meal and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for great food, ambiance, and service. However, parking is not something you have to worry about for this spot as they have their own parking lot. The place has an open window concept, so you will not get out of there smelling like the food, however the rich flavors of Mexican cuisine can be definitely experienced. The decor is beautiful and picturesque. The staff were super friendly and attentive. So very attentive that they kept trying to take my plate as I was actively still eating lol but I know they were just trying to be attentive. I got the breakfast tacos. Simple but delicious. The flavors were so good. And the 2 tacos were super fulfilling. I enjoyed every single bite and I'd totally recommend it. I also got a mimosa to celebrate my graduation, although their mimosa flavors were basic and the orange juice was the bitter type. Also the glass for the mimosa wasn't the best. I attempted to cheer a couple times but it was filled to the top and it spilled everywhere. Anywho, the girls all loved their brunch and we totally recommend this spot. You'll feel like you went to a Cancun vacation

I've been coming here with my family for years, celebrating countless birthdays and special occasions, so I figured it was time to update my review. One of the biggest improvements is the remodel they completed a few years ago. The restaurant feels much larger, more open, and more modern. The atmosphere has always been a huge part of Javier's appeal. The food has consistently been good, but the prices have climbed higher and higher over the years. At times, they feel close to being a "ripoff", but the ambiance, ocean adjacent location, and overall experience help justify it. That said, the "scene" isn't quite what it used to be. Javier's has long been a staple of Newport Beach culture and will probably remain that way forever. Years ago, it felt like the place to see and be seen. Today, it feels more like a local institution than a hotspot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. As a family with several vegetarians, one thing that has always bothered us is the pricing. Charging extra for beans and rice often makes certain vegetarian dishes more expensive than entrées that include meat, which feels hard to justify. My family's favorite vegetarian option is the spinach enchiladas, while my go to order is the three item combination plate with a chicken enchilada, taco, and chile relleno. While many people argue that South of Nick's serves better Mexican food, I respectfully disagree. South of Nick's may be more affordable, but I still think Javier's serves the best Mexican food in town. It's a great choice for date nights, family dinners, celebrations, or anyone looking for a classic Newport Beach experience. The service and overall food quality may have slipped slightly over the years, but Javier's remains my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. Yes, the prices are outrageous, but the food, atmosphere, and tradition keep us coming back. Cool Fact: Kobe Bryant used to regularly come to Javier's and they had a drink called "the black mamba" named after him on the menu!

Mexican sounded good, so I decided to check it out. Great Mex is located right on the main strip on the Balboa Peninsula. It's very much a hole-in-the-wall space - with a super simple/casual set up. The space isn't large - you order your food at the counter and then there are a few tables where you can sit. I was lucky that the place was empty when I arrived - shortly after I sat to eat a bunch of people came and filled the tables. They have a good variety of Mexican dishes - nothing too outrageous, mostly things familiar to the American palate. I decided to get the two taco combo dish and chose al pastor as my protein. The tacos were super tasty - generously filled with two being enough if you're hungry but not starving. The dish came with rice and refried beans which were also good. They carry Mexican Coke, so I got one of those to finish the meal off. Service was great - they were super friendly and the food was ready relatively quickly. They also went above and beyond - two people in my party got fountain beverages but they noticed they were too watered down and were quick to replace the syrup and provide us new beverages. Overall, I had a good meal at Great Mex - definitely a standout on Balboa Peninsula.
