Have driven past this place many times and, when out of town guests requested Mexican food, we decided to give it a try. So glad we did!! Quiet little patio that is just off the PCH in CDM. Staff were super friendly and the food was delicious - fresh and flavorful. It's not fancy but a great place for great food, drinks and conversation!

Food is flavorless and dry and overpriced. Happy hour drinks are drastically sweeter than regular priced ones. Overall I like the ambiance and servers are nice and would come back for A (one) drink but never for food again.

I love enchiladas Suiza and this Suiza is probably the best I've ever had. Fluffy tortilla, grilled chicken, balanced green sauce, and lots of sour cream! All their enchiladas sound good and I will totally come back and try more. The mole enchiladas in particular sounds amazing. Wonderful outdoor seating area. Good service. Casual. Street parking. Please come and create your own adventure.

Santa Barbara enchiladas and Green chili tamales

Delicious! There is a reason this restaurant has been around for more than 100 years. We had the Santa Barbara enchiladas and green chile corn tamales and took it to the beach - perfect lunch very tasty! Ask for the habanero spicy sauce If you want to kick, and beware. The guacamole was okay. Traditional Mexican interior if you chose to dine in with patio seating.

Me and my family ate here and honestly the Mexican food is not that good. There are places that are way better. Going to give it 2 stars rather than one because they have good service and a good ambiance. However, my sister and her boyfriend got sick from the food shortly after and both threw up. After the food me and my boyfriend felt bloated and had slight stomach pain/discomfort. The food appears that it's not made freshly. No good seasonings on the food and some of the food is bland (especially the fajitas). I got an enchilada and the sauce taste like it's made from the can and the beans taste like they come from the can as well. Honestly, not coming back again and not worth the price.

Green corn tamal, roasted pork enchilada with green sauce, cilantro rice and beans

Service & staff were on point. Food was delicious. I got the combo with a green corn tamale and an enchilada which I added roasted pork and green sauce. That was my favorite! I also subbed for the cilantro rice instead of the traditional Spanish rice. Everything was delicious. The tamale was so soft and tender. I tried a regular pork tamale with red sauce but much preferred the green corn!

Stopped by today for happy-hour. Had the special margarita, taquitos and tortilla soup. Everything was well prepared and tasty. The restaurant is on PCH but there is plenty of parking in the rear. The only draw-back was there were no chips/salsa offered. Perhaps, you have to ask???? Anyway, not a deal-killer. Service was quick and scene was perfect. Oh yeah.....the do offer free wi-fi and the code is 1923, so since I was solo I needed to catch up on a project I am working on.

He was attentive, accommodating, and did everything he could to make our experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, this review is directed at Red O's management team. My wife and children were excited to bring me to Red O for Father's Day brunch. As a husband and father, I was looking forward to celebrating the occasion with my family. We were seated quickly, which was a great start, but my disappointment began the moment I looked at the menu. There was absolutely nothing special about the Father's Day brunch menu. It was the same basic brunch menu that appears to be offered on any regular weekend. I was hoping to enjoy a quality steak, perhaps a ribeye or filet, as a Father's Day treat. Instead, the only steak options available were a carne asada dish and an oversized surf-and-turf featuring a massive tomahawk and lobster tail designed to feed multiple people. I asked our waiter why there wasn't a ribeye or filet offered for Father's Day. His response shocked me. He explained that for Mother's Day, Red O had offered an elaborate all-you-can-eat champagne brunch complete with carving stations, multiple meat selections, and a much more elevated experience. I know he meant no harm by sharing that information, but hearing it made the situation even more disappointing. To his credit, our waiter went above and beyond. He spoke with the chef and somehow arranged for me to receive a steak that wasn't even on the menu. That level of service is the only reason this review isn't a 1-star rating. My frustration is entirely with management. Why was Mother's Day treated like a major celebration while Father's Day received no special attention whatsoever? Fathers work hard, sacrifice for their families, and deserve to be celebrated too. I'm not suggesting Mother's Day should be diminished in any way, but the contrast between the two experiences was impossible to ignore. What made this especially disappointing was having to hide my feelings from my family. My wife and kids were genuinely excited to treat me to brunch at Red O, and I didn't want to ruin the occasion for them. But the reality is that I left feeling overlooked and undervalued by a restaurant that clearly knows how to create special holiday experiences when it chooses to. Red O missed a tremendous opportunity to celebrate fathers. Instead of a memorable Father's Day experience, we were given an ordinary brunch menu and the feeling that the holiday simply wasn't important enough to warrant any extra effort. That is incredibly disappointing.

Mexican sounded good, so I decided to check it out. Great Mex is located right on the main strip on the Balboa Peninsula. It's very much a hole-in-the-wall space - with a super simple/casual set up. The space isn't large - you order your food at the counter and then there are a few tables where you can sit. I was lucky that the place was empty when I arrived - shortly after I sat to eat a bunch of people came and filled the tables. They have a good variety of Mexican dishes - nothing too outrageous, mostly things familiar to the American palate. I decided to get the two taco combo dish and chose al pastor as my protein. The tacos were super tasty - generously filled with two being enough if you're hungry but not starving. The dish came with rice and refried beans which were also good. They carry Mexican Coke, so I got one of those to finish the meal off. Service was great - they were super friendly and the food was ready relatively quickly. They also went above and beyond - two people in my party got fountain beverages but they noticed they were too watered down and were quick to replace the syrup and provide us new beverages. Overall, I had a good meal at Great Mex - definitely a standout on Balboa Peninsula.

Throughout the meal, we felt repeatedly rushed. Plates were cleared quickly, and it seemed like we were being encouraged to leave before we had finished enjoying our celebration. The most disappointing part came when the bill arrived. Our server, Mercedes, told us that the tip was not included. After my mom paid and left an 18% tip, Mercedes again commented on the gratuity and stated that it wasn't the suggested amount. My mom had to explain that she had intentionally left the amount she felt was appropriate. We were genuinely surprised that a server would openly question a customer's gratuity, especially after receiving an 18% tip. Afterward, it also appeared that the situation was being discussed with coworkers within view of our table, which made us feel even more uncomfortable. I understand that restaurant work is demanding and everyone can have difficult days. However, no guest celebrating a special occasion should leave feeling rushed, criticized for the tip they chose to leave, or uncomfortable because of an interaction with their server. It's unfortunate because we were looking forward to celebrating a meaningful occasion as a family, and the service left a lasting negative impression. I hope management takes this feedback as an opportunity to coach staff so future guests have a better experience.
