So I stopped coming to Gil's because of the rude service that I always encounter when I go there. The person is a short heavyset, Hispanic woman with the worst attitude I've ever encountered. Been coming for years dealing with this attitude because I love the chicken. I stopped coming for almost a year. I decided to give it another chance and lo and behold. I placed my order. She gets it wrong and she blames it on me. Does it try to rectify? It just tells me outright I ordered wrong. So I asked my refund and they can't even get that right they shorted me my refund. It wasn't much so I left it at that. I will never be coming to this place again. Service is beyond horrible. Five stars again for the family catfish; the price is up to $33 before tax for 24pc and 12 hush puppies. Mr R wanted their fried okra again so with tax I paid closer to $38. If you've tried their drive through before, you know it's not unusual to be asked to pull around into the little mini lot closest to Hunter Rd to wait. Your wait's going to be a bit longer when you order fish (drive through or inside) because like most chicken places they fry it when you order it. Friendly employee brought out our order, and a quick peek told me the order was correct plus they'd included lemon wedges without our requesting it. Last time the tartar sauce was in one big side serving but this time we had several individually packaged shots and again, it was sufficient. When we got in the house I popped the (still very hot) box in the microwave to stay warm while we tended a few critters before plating up. We GORGED on the perfectly crispy fish with lemon and tartar sauce; there was still enough to share small bites with small friends and have the last 1/3 cold the next day. Mr R had some of the hush puppies. He's more partial to savory style than sweet, but we ordered knowing most of them would be a treat for visiting deer that evening. Their okra's done in batter, not seasoned cornmeal, and it's good. Decent flavor produce and not lost in excessive dough. When I'm in San Marcos, I Gill's is on my list for damn good fried chicken. The pieces are big, the crust is just right, and the seasoning is more basic (in a good way) than places like Popeyes. Not too spicy, not complicated, just good taste without much frou-frou. Today I tried the tenders for the first time, and they live up to the bone-in chicken. And they're not the wimpy little strips some places pass off as tenders, these are big! The biscuits here are good, so much better than the silly white rolls at other places. Was super-hungry this afternoon and she had the idea of getting fried chicken at Gills this evening -- an idea that I 110% agreed to. We got the Family Ten Piece Meal. The chicken was amazing. The breading was nice and crispy, and the seasoning gives just the right amount of flavor, enhancing rather than drowning out the flavor of the chicken. For sides, we got corn, mashed potatoes, and fried okra. All three are fantastic. The texture of the fried okra is nice, and the flavoring is just right. The corn is likewise sweet and juicy. Best fried chicken I have had. All others are inferior wannabes. 3 piece white is enough for two if you are not heavy eaters. I tried to finish it myself, but took the large wing home. I liked the green beans. Flat bean with onion and a trace of bacon for flavor. 2 biscuits were also great, hot fresh, flaky (finished those.) Will return when I am nearby, also will not need much for dinner tonight. Coating was even, crisp, and hot; stayed on the pieces. Restrooms were clean, well stocked (soap and paper.) Planning car club events during this time (Covid-19) was a bit easier than I thought. The downside is we can't all huddle in a group and look at someone's latest new mod to their car...But, with radios in every car we can hit the backroads with ease. Find a drive thru, a trash can, and a bathroom and it's pretty close to what we would normally do. One member had been craving fried chicken. I attempted to locate such a place that could accommodate said preferences without hitting a chain like Chicken Express or Church's Chicken. I initially zeroed in on a Burnet spot that didn't have a drive thru, but had good fried goodness. Didn't happen the way I wanted so I consulted fellow Yelper Ardie S. on Gill's in San Marcos. To my surprise I didn't even know this Gills location existed! Original location on Hopkins has some epic tenure for a college town; the parking lot was a bit small for our needs. Today, just to check out the vittles I took mom on a lunch adventure and had lunch in the parking lot. For those who haven't visited; it's in a small strip center just past the HEB distribution center on the right. Sign is a bit tiny BTW; don't blink. Once we navigated ordering and the drive thru we sat in the parking lot and dined on the open hatch of an SUV. I selected a chicken breast to start my adventure. Crisp exterior with a moist bird. Breasts can be dried out from the fryer; this was not the case at Gills. Fried catfish paired with house made tartar also won our approval too. Sides were cole slaw and fried okra. Slaw had nice ratio of liquid that appeared in both our sides. Okra was better than expected as well. Got a few crumbs of the biscuit before it met it's demise of being dropped in the parking lot. Employees came out to visit with us offering chairs to make us comfortable. Offered suggestions for our next visit including the steak fingers that are cut and breaded in house. Originally San Marcos local here. After moving from their old location, I brought my son to the new location when we came to town. It was during those few years of Covid but after things started opening back up. Restaurant was not open, only the drive thru. Service was not friendly, food was forgotten but paid for, and it just wasn't as good as I had remembered. Fast forward 2 years & we are back in town. I had to give it another try as this is the chicken and fried catfish I grew up with. I brought my son who just could not understand why we were trying again. I told him if it's only drive thru, we will eat somewhere else. I wasn't going to get screwed again with bad service and an incorrect order. They were open. Well.....Gil's redeemed itself. I'm not going to say the staff is overly friendly. They are pleasant but they don't go out of their way to be nice. Prices are definitely higher than I remember but a once in a while visit is ok. Chicken was great. Crispy and juicy. We especially like those bits of skin and batter that get super crunchy. I wish they could make chips out of that. Yum. Definitely not healthy. Catfish is perfectly battered and I'm always so excited to get the crispy edges. Catfish was not fishy and cooked to perfection. The batter is perfect for one of my favorite bottom feeders. Hushpuppies are great. Biscuits are a special cross between a soft baked roll and a tasty, hearty biscuit. Great by themselves but add the liquid 'heart attack' butter and honey, it's even better. Eat your carbs! You won't regret it. Corn nuggets are SO great! I couldn't finish to eat the food. My roommate is currently throwing it up. The biscuits were not great, it tasted very doughy. The fries weren't great either. I couldn't decide if I like the chicken or not. It needs more seasonings on the batter. We nearly didn't get our 2 piece chicken in the end but the woman that was attending us was amazing. We told her we are missing a two piece and she gave us an extra breast. Quick recovery. The customer service was there! They did phenomenal, but the food needs improvement. The chicken was great, the drive through server was brain dead and the drive through route is treacherous. All you need to know in one sentence. If you need more...I had the four piece tenders. They were exceptionally good and huge. I have no idea who could eat the seven piece. They come with gravy which was new to me but good. I loved the slaw. It was just the way I like it. Pretty thinly sliced, a bit sweat and not soupy. The mashed potatoes were puréed like most fried chicken stops make. The biscuit was spot on. The drive thru server was brain dead. Check your order! He spent most of the time chit chatting with another person. That must be why my car now has enough napkins for the next nine months and there were no utensils for the sides. Ordering the 10 piece family meal and consistently get nearly half of the pieces as wings recently. I noticed staff members bickering amongst one another while waiting for order. Their was some older staff members complaining about needing help from the younger staff. Which seemed to be just dismissing the issue completely. Also seen a female crew member packing up a big box of chicken which I thought was for a customer. She literally got picked up from work and made herself a hefty family meal for free. As she didn't interact with the cash register at all. If I was the owner I'd definitely be checking on food waste and food inventory costs. My wife and I are not real big into fried chicken but we do love chicken tenders, especially the ones we normally get from Raising Cane's. So one night while playing some pickleball, another player made a bold claim that Gill's chicken tenders were better than Cane's. No way! We just had to try it to see how well their tenders compared...so after we struck out on the Flaming Bird at HEB (they ran out of their roasted chicken) after a long afternoon getting our plantation shutters installed, we headed out to Gill's. We parked in the parking lot after seeing long lines going through their drive thru. We just walked up and placed our orders after getting some pointers from the friendly lady behind the counter. My wife ordered the 4-piece chicken tenders, cole slaw and fries and I tried the 3-piece dark meat chicken plate with mashed potatoes/gravy snd cole slaw. We ordered our meals to go. My wife thought her tenders were substantial, crispy, tender and yummy and thought their gravy was good...she thought they were comparable to Cane's chicken tenders. My fried chicken pieces were crispy and tender and had decent flavors, although it was too greasy/oily for my liking. Their fried chicken was better than we tried at Bush's but I don't know if they were better than Popeye's Chicken...and we've sworn off KFC altogether after so many bad meals there. All in all, pretty good chicken from Gill's and I can understand why they have a loyal following. Aside from chicken, the lady behind the counter also raved about their fried catfish...but we're not big fans of catfish either. Cannot imagine what the people at the drive thru have happen to them if you get scammed inside to your face. Went in for a quick lunch and my companion asked for 2 piece with fried okra and mashed potatoes. I got my order correct but his came without the okra. I walked to the counter and asked for it and they said it wasn't on the order Fine! So I ordered a side of okra but they won't let me get it because I didn't have cash and it was less than 5 dollars and they refused my debit card told me to buy more food up to that quantity!!! Their chicken decently fried, but not seasoned well, so it's a bit bland given the bite. You need their hot sauce to give it flavor. Unfortunately, they will only give you one little hot sauce per meal. So, for three-piece chicken meal they will give you one hot sauce and if you ask for a second one, they'll charge you .25 plus tax. This is likely from a bottle of hot sauce that they likely spent $2 dollars on. I asked for one additional hot sauce and the girl at the window had to run it up the chain for a final decision of "no", but we can give you one for .25 plus tax. read more

Gill's has really good chicken, and does have drive-through service, but the restaurant is not really made for drive-through as you can get killed. When it gets crowded, particularly on weekends, cars often end sitting stationery waiting on line on the main road (Hunter Road) while other cars are shooting by at 50 to 55 mph. My main grief is that lined-up cars block the entrance way (which is the only entrance way) to the nearby apartment complex, physical therapist, hair salon, and Mexican restaurant. I guess this is why they call this chicken to die for. read more

4/18 7:20pm. This is usually our "go to" place for fried chicken. We've been eating here since college. Tonight was not a great experience. We were told upfront that it would be an 8 minute wait for the chicken. We didn't have a problem with that. What we had a problem with was walking up to the counter to order and being ignored. The majority of the employees were laughing at another employee who spilled water all over himself and was either high or not very smart. We almost walked out, but we knew that the food is always consistently great. They asked this employee if he was going to take our order. He stood there and looked at me. Finally, another employee walked up and took our order. We received our food within the 8 minutes like they said. Not a very enjoyable meal. Maybe it was the poor service. We watched several other customers have to take their orders back up to the counter because they didn't get what they ordered. We will come back, but it won't be anytime soon. read more

Today at lunch time Gills was out of thighs. The chicken I did get was dry and crispy like glass.They said if I wanted a thigh I would have to wait 15 minutes. They gave me one wing. They said wings are not small so they would only give me one. Also said they sold the Last breast while I was talking . So I had to take the leg and one wing or wait 15 minutes. We came in for Austin to try This place . So not worth it. So disappointed. I ordered two chicken strips and two steak fingers. They were about 2 inches long and burnt. My two year grandson would have been asking where's my papa . Literally that's how tiny they were. The kid that took our order even said this place wasn't worth it. My husband got a stomach ache afterwords. I got my money back. Would have took all of it back but my husband had just prayed over his food. Come to Austin and try Gus chicken, tumble 22 or Lucy's .
