My wife likes to try potato salad but she is also quite picky about it. After discussing it with the employee- she decided against it since she said they didn't make it in house. But when we got our food brought to our table- there was a side of potato salad! She explained we didn't ordered it but the employee- same person who took out order- said the owner wanted you to try it and it was on them! Very impressive customer service! Not only was the first woman very accommodating as we tried to figure out what to order- she also recommended sauces and we really enjoyed the Sucky avocado ranch she said was her favorite. The chicken strips and the queso were the stars that day. The chicken strips were very juicy-- not at all Ike regular fast food strips. The queso was the same topper to the Filthy fries and mac and cheese. It was very good- def not from a can. The owner was very nice- he came out and chatted with us a bit. First time trying this restaurant. We were greeted as we walked in to the almost empty restaurant. The gentleman that helped us was great, very friendly. So we were off to a good start. Have seen this place many times but never have stopped. Let me tell you, we will definitely be back!! Let's start with the menu. They serve large chicken strips and awesome hot dogs!! They have a few more items but my wife and I didn't really pay much attention. We didn't come here with intentions to give a review. The chicken was not only big pieces but they were very tasty. Both the fries and chicken were hot!! The Texas toast looked great but my wife ate both pieces. So I can not say how the toast tasted. Lol We also got their "Wicked chili dog"!! I have lived in the area two years and was always hesitant try this place. We finally did today and I'm so mad I could have been eating this for years. First of all staff is friendly, manager checked in on us while we dined and had a friendly smile. The staff taking our order was polite and it was very clean. The food... omg! The chicken breading actually has flavor and isn't saturated in grease. The servings were huge! I ordered a 4 piece that came with fries, toast and a side. I got the mac and cheese for the side and it had a little kick to it and was so creamy! The toast was buttery and not burnt and the fries were cooked to perfection and not overly salted. The gravy was creamy for dipping and I had plenty left over to take home. Several nearby had hotdogs and I'm not much of a hot dog girl but they looked delicious. The chicken tenders here are great! I would definitely recommend this joint. Pricing isn't bad at all. We got 20 tenders with 8 sauces for $40. Large fry, or I should say family fry, was $7.60. Aesthetically the place is cute, a little small and comes with a fire place. There was plenty of drink options, I was actually surprised by the menu choices. However we were not impressed with the food. Elotes were over cooked and maybe had oil or butter possibly, didn't seem to have mayo or queso fresco. The people that work here were incredibly friendly and came by to check on us a couple times. The owner even stopped by and told us his story for a bit. We ordered two of the combo meals with four tenders, french fries aside and a drink. We got their sauce, which is somewhat of a honey mustard sauce along with the chipotle ranch and the avocado ranch. I enjoyed all the sauces, but the avocado ranch was my favorite. The chicken tenders had plenty of seasoning, but they weren't too spicy for the kids. The mac and cheese was really creamy, but it did have a little bit of a kick to it and my daughter didn't eat it. I didn't mind because I thought it was really good. I really enjoyed the elote, but my husband wasn't a huge fan, but he also doesn'really like elote anyways. My kids are really picky about their fries, but they actually really enjoyed these. The menu is basically hot dogs and tender combos etc. But, these aren't your average dogs and birds. The hot dogs were crispy, flavorful, and juicy. Driving back to Austin from San Antonio and decided to try Bird Dog--right off I-35! I think it used to be a BBQ joint, but now it's all about chicken tenders and hot dogs, and honestly... it works! The chicken tenders were so good--crispy, flavorful batter and super juicy inside. I tried the avocado ranch dip (I think they make their own sauces!), and it paired perfectly. After spending the morning and early afternoon shopping at the outlets we needed fuel before we head back to SA. We found this on Yelp and was pleased it wasn't too far from the outlets. Since it was too early for dinner- we were it was pretty dead on this Friday late afternoon. We definitely wanted to Filthy fries because we try Carne Asada fries whenever we see them on a menu. And then we chose the Mother Clucker to share between the 3 of us since it had 6 chicken strips. We couldn't decide on the sauces so they were nice enough to recommend some and let us try a couple more than what came with the meal. There's a spicy avocado ranch that was so yummy- we all gravitated towards it. The owner came out to talk to us and he even threw in a free dessert to try. He said they are constantly trying out new recipes- this time it was a pumpkin roll. He was very proud of his chicken strips when we sang our praises of how tender they were. We really loved the food but loved the customer service even more. They Mac and cheese is not to be forgotten because they use the queso! The same stuff they smother their filthy fries with! The only thing the fries needed was probably some kind of a pico and hot sauce/ salsa. But all in all- we will def be back whenever we are in San Marcos! read more

They are SO nice here but the food was just okay, unfortunately. I really wanted to love it!! The chicken tenders are very tender with just a light coating of breading. Kind of "floppy". Taste was excellent though! The fries were very basic and not crispy. Mac and cheese was too salty and tasted like it was mostly velveeta. I tried the elote and it tasted like canned corn soaked in oil or butter with some tajin on top. It's been many months since my last review, but today's experience at Bird Dog inspired me enough to let everyone know that Bird Dog is the new place for delicious food and an amazing experience! Upon arrival my gf and I were greeted by the owner himself who exemplified excellent customer service through a genuine excitement from our arrival. After commenting it was our first time in, he helped us navigate through the menu and recommended a few things. We picked the Holy Cow Burger and the Bird Box (3pc), mac & cheese + an Horchata drink. After waiting for about 10 minutes, our food trays came out with an impressive presentation. After the first few bites the owner also came out to see how everything tasted. We were pleased to inform him that the quality and taste of the meats were on point. The owner was exited and explained that he sourced other local vendors, like the buns for the burgers, which added to the level of quality he expected. The ambiance of this older establishment was revamped for this business and provided a new cozy vibe for us both to enjoy our food. Another thing we appreciated was the level of attention their staff gave us during our first visit. It was towards the end of the day's shift, but over all the level of experience became unmatched to that of other top rated restaurant. It is bold to say that but I guess you'll just need to go and see for yourselves. The icing on the whole experience came as a treat from the owner with a cinnamon roll for the road! It's so refreshing to have excellent customer service, delicious food and a truly kind staff to wrap up a very pleasant night out for a quick meal.
