Back in Petoskey for the Summer and so excited to find "our place" for dinner and drinks but tonight was such a mess. The onion rings had such amazing potential but were literally dripping of cooking oil. The server apologized for somehow breaking apart our Buffalo chicken wrap, and instead of the kitchen re-rolling it, we ate it with a fork off the plate. Happy hour prices were not entered on the bill, so that had to be corrected. Very nice server but his nervousness made me nervous. I'm not going to recommend this place to people because their definitely is better places to eat. The fries on special were $10 and a greasy mess with no salt and the dipping aioli was on the side. My wife and I came back here after the great food and service for our wedding party dinner! Food was very fresh. We got the happy hour which was a great happy hour (prices and selections). We had a very nice meal tonight. Margaret was our server. She did a very nice job taking our orders, answering our questions with her cheerful smile, friendly attitude, easy conversation. We also knew some similar people. Excellent job Margaret. The noise level was low. Most of the golf crowd left by the time we arrived. Ambiance was relaxed, music was 1970's America's, Sister Golden Hair. Our meals were very tasty. Generous food portions. Meals and tip was $45. Location was close to our travels. Unfortunately, we did not have a good meal at Jax. The food did not seem fresh and was not very tasty. My husband ordered the pork chop and could not even eat it so he sent it back and got wings instead. He said they even seemed like they were undercooked. We were in deepest Charlevoix to play a surprise Birthday party for one of our great fans. Ensconced in the Best Western across the street from Jax Northside here, we followed a tip this place would bring a good dinner. We didn't feel like running the gauntlet of the weekend downtown Charlevoix tourist glut, and it was in walking (-ish) distance. It's a nice room, just a tinge more posh than a Northwoods supper club, and the menu is definitely a few ticks up. That's sometimes a harbinger of more creative writing talent than culinary prowess. Not here though, the Chef knew what they were doing. The Northern nod is the salad bar, and damn it all, I LIKE salad bars. This one was not huge, but well-appointed. All of the dressings were made on-premises. Wife is a "Ranch" connoisseur-she reported this rendition as fab. I concur. For some reason, everybody in the joint had a taste for cottage cheese that night, 'cos some of us had to wait for refills. Our server was pleasant and jocular, if not exactly speedy. I had a perfectly prepared Olde Fashioned, and it was a generous pour. Perhaps not the heroic pint glass you find at certain Wisconsin supper clubs, but generous nonetheless. Although I didn't have one, the beer menu looked a treat. Aficionados and common taste were all accounted for in the choices. There were a number of interesting hors d'oeuvres on the menu, which, I'm afraid I didn't get to sample. Regrets. For entrée, I swung with a Flank Steak thing that was prepared to perfect temperature, in this instance, rare. It was delicious. Accompanying were the roasted Brussels Sprouts so in fashion these days. I've actually gotten tired of this dish, but this offering had something about it that ticked the tastebuds. A scoop of mashed potatoes were the onliest disappointment--they were dry and uninteresting. Not exactly warm, either. A Brownie and Ice Cream dessert was shared with my pal across the table (Wife isn't into desserts). It was good, but nothing special. Then again, it kind of hit the spot. Simple is sometimes best. After serving the food entrees she never checked once on how our food was or if we needed or wanted anything else. The ambiance was lovely, quiet, intimate yet welcoming. Exactly what you want in an up north area. I had the pasta primavera and it was good. However, it came with chicken on it and that was never mentioned. I don't mind chicken but I was shocked to receive it when I ordered a vegetarian dish. The chicken was well flavored but extremely dry. My companions ordered ribs and they were over cooked and extremely greasy. It felt as though they were deep fried. When we inquired with our waitress, she stated they were precooked. Would never order the ribs again but our waitress did take money off the bill. We dine here every couple months and always ask ourselves why we bothered. Food is mediocre and overpriced. On our last visit a couple weeks ago we ordered the queso dip off their specials menu. The server was unaware such item existed. The pasta in the five cheese cavatappi was way overcooked and mushy and the sauce was nothing special. Ribs were greasy. Service was apathetic and is a continuous rotation of new faces and never any sign of a manager. Although they are open until 9pm, don't go after 8 or the hostess will look at her watch and give you the stink eye for daring to come in so close to quitting time. Jax is an an excellent addition to Charlevoix. Their patio is a great place to grab dinner or lunch in the summer. I love that it is within walking distance to our house so we frequent here for dinner with our family. They have a wine list with something for everyone and rotate weekly specials for dining. My husband thinks the bayou pasta is their highlight but I enjoy the ribs salad bar or orzo salad the most. read more

the food was amazing and our server was very friendly but the hostess was very rude and we were being judged by the other customers sitting at their table's because of the way we looked and we were wearing our work uniforms. My coworker and I work hard in the construction field and get dusty and dirty, but that doesn't mean we need to be judged on our appearance trying to get a hot meal at the end of the day. So if you work in a job that requires hard labor in dirty conditions I suggest you not go here to sit and eat.Your better off getting it to go. read more

I used to love going to Jax but there are changes under the new ownership. It was a place to get a really nice piece of whitefish. Not anymore. I saw burgers, fries and other sandwiches that all looked great. The salad bar is still available. Our waitress was outstanding. The white fish is a must miss. The portion of fish was extremely small and nothing about my order was appealing. I was very disappointed. Next time I'll try a burger. read more

Stopped here on our way back to Traverse City - lots of cars in the parking lot. Clean restaurant, quick service, middle of the road food. We had the shrimp dinner, was good, breading similar to sweet and sour chicken. Chicken parmigiana was good for a non Italian restaurant.
