Natalie our waitress was FANTASTIC! She answered all of our questions about the menu and even more importantly made great suggestions of which I took her up on. (PLUS...Natalie was EXTREMELY nice & funny) The omelet and quesadilla were SO good! The building and space is lovely. The first time we got there for lunch and the panini sandwiches were amazing. Was bummed we couldn't add an egg onto the BLT was told because they don't do any breakfast food once it's lunch time. Was told come back for breakfast and you can do the egg on a BLT. However day two was told no because they don't have mayo at breakfast which is a lousy excuse for not accommodating a simple request. It is a small town and they can tell we were 'tourists' because they seemed to know everyone else that came in, and walked over to the bar area. We were sat near the front windows of the main dining room. Then a large table of 6 adults got sat next to us when there is OTHER ample seating in the rest of the restaurant. I do not get why staff does that? Great family friendly place to grab a quick bite or linger at the bar. We frequently boat into town and bring our meals back to the boat. Everything I've ordered is delicious. Personal favorite is the Bordeaux Panini, husband lives their burgers. They have a great selection of fresh salads and cold drinks. I have been a patron for years. Today we tried the breakfast menu (appears new for them) Menu had a decent offering. So when I go out, the service is a big part of my meal. Today it was lacking and was a detractor to the meal. I understand it is difficult to get staff, but if you don't insist that the staff is polite, then your business will suffer. Such a disappointment. Some of us ordered the "Bougie Bagel" which was supposed to be local smoked salmon, cream cheese, onions, and capers. But instead of sliced salmon, it was salmon spread. $15! Such a rip off. My friend asked for egg whites and was told, "We are out of egg whites" while my other friend had no problem getting fried eggs. We've frequented The Happy Troll on multiple occasions, drawn in by the promise of decent food. But alas, the recurring issue here is the service, which is usually slower than a leisurely stroll in molasses. One can easily expect to invest a mind-numbing 2-3 hours in total, from arrival to finishing the meal. Now, there is a shining beacon in this dimly lit tunnel of service woes - Susie, the bartender. She's the sole reason we returned for a third chance. Unfortunately, that third time became the breaking point. Our party consisted of 10 souls, two of whom were little ones under the age of 4. The initial prognosis from the establishment was a 30-minute wait. We obediently waited at the bar, only to have our patience tried further as it took nearly 30 minutes just to receive a beverage. To complicate matters, the owner seemed more interested in obstructing Susie's workflow behind the bar than in tending to customers. Meanwhile, an unfortunate staff member attempted to change a keg, resulting in a beer flood on the floor, with the owner nonchalantly obstructing her path. Service at the bar was taking so long that I took it upon myself to collect everyone's order and jot it down. Frustrated by the inability to get drinks, I once checked back with the host to see how much longer. Given the fact we were initially told 30 minutes, and it had already been well over an hour. The clueless host told us were next in line. Curiously, however, our name had mysteriously disappeared from their list, now transferred to another sheet. Yet another 30 minutes drifted by, and we watched them seat a couple more four tops that could easily have been pushed together, yet still no table. At this point, we had languished for over an hour and a half. We finally at least had a first round of drinks on the table. But glasses empty, and not so much as a nod in our direction as to when they might be able to refill them or bring a round of water. The owner did manage to open a beer and pour a glass of wine and appeared to revel in her accomplishment. (I wish I was overstating her reaction here!) Then came the climax: My daughter dared to inquire about the wait, only to be informed that they would not be serving our party due to a sudden food shortage. Yes, he literally told her that he ran out of food, but might be able to seat us if we waited another 30 minutes or so. Well which is it bud? Your restaurant is out of food or you can squeeze us in after you blatantly ignored us for nearly 2 hours?? It boggles the mind that they continued to seat new patrons while we, patiently waiting, were left high and dry. No apologies were proffered for this exasperating dance of misinformation, and no rationale was offered for the constant seating of new patrons despite our prior commitment. In sum, The Happy Troll's service is nothing short of abysmal. The owners seem utterly adrift in the art of running a restaurant, choosing to hinder rather than aid their clearly overwhelmed staff. To add insult to injury, they tacked on a surcharge to the bar bill for using a credit card. read more

Our whole experience here was very disappointing. My husband chose The Happy Troll for his birthday dinner this year because they were advertising a prime rib special, which he knew I would like, and they have a lot of sandwiches and burgers that he likes. As long-time "Scovies" customers, we were excited to try this new iteration of the restaurant. We got there and were seated right away with no wait even though it was fairly busy, so we had high hopes. But that is perhaps the only part of our visit that was good. Our waitress mentioned their soup of the day but forgot to tell us about the prime rib special they were advertising and we had to specifically ask about it, to which she replied "oh, yes, we ARE having that, hahaha." LOL. She took our drink order, then disappeared for 10-15 minutes and dropped off our drinks. Then she disappeared for another 10 minutes or so and returned to take our food order. I ordered the prime rib special and my husband ordered one of their specialty burgers. We then waited a FULL HOUR for our order. During that time, some interesting things happened: - Because of their open-kitchen design, we could see and hear everything that was going on in the kitchen, so we heard it when the cook 86'ed the prime rib because they ran out. It had been over 15 minutes since we ordered so I thought maybe my order was safe. HEH. - No one tracked down our waitress to tell her that half of her order for our table was unavailable. We sat there and waited and waited, and in the meantime, my husband's burger was put up under the heat lamp. - We continued to wait and wait. After a full hour had passed, our waitress came to apologize to us and then went back to check on our order. This was when she learned that there was no more prime rib. She had to come back to our table and tell us that half our order was unavailable knowing full well that we had already been waiting an hour. I ordered my second choice, a specialty panini, and she took our order back. - Instead of making my husband a new burger, they gave him the one that had been sitting under the heat lamp for 30 or 40 minutes. We weren't sure because at one point the cook removed it from the window and then, a few minutes later, placed what we hoped was a different burger up there to go with the new order, but when it got to our table it was obvious that it was the same burger that had been sitting around for half and hour or longer. Unbelievable - But wait, it gets better! Not only was the service here very poor, but we had to sit and listen to the cook badmouth the entire rest of the staff. There is no wall between the kitchen and the front of the house, so we got to hear that guy berate and belittle the waitstaff and other kitchen staff the entire time we were sitting there. It was horrible and caused tension and anxiety for everyone who could hear him. It was horrible. Ha also had absolutely NO hustle despite the fact that they were busy. - We were not offered even a small discount for the many, many mistakes that had to be made to mess our dining experience up this badly. Not even an "I'm sorry" from any of the staff. Our waitress was VERY apologetic, but the kitchen staff who could see what was happening to us just did not care and I got the feeling that they were upset with us for daring to order their special. What a ridiculous experience. We did not make a fuss or really say anything to anyone. It took us 2 hours to get a meal out of this place, and I didn't even end up with what I initially ordered. There were SO MANY THINGS they could have done to save themselves, but they just utterly failed to do anything. I don't think we will be going back, sadly. read more

Not pleased with the automated billing system, I did not realize that they tipped the after tax amount. I hope they are going to give the state a cut. It's interesting because I usually give a cash tip that is more than 20% but when they program that like they did it kind of makes me mad. I don't get to Charlevoix often, but from my last visit, The Happy Troll has become one of my new favorites. The food was exceptional - I tried a Bloody Troll, prime rib, and a prime rib. Since I was charging the bill to the Underhills' account, I also ordered the caramel apple bar - it was absolutely fantastic! The service matched the high quality of the food. The staff were super friendly and quick to assist, reflecting the heart and soul that the owners, Dennis and Paige, have clearly poured into their establishment. We used to buy food from the former place, Scovies , but recently it was sold and they changed to The Happy Troll, last Friday , coming back from a winery where we went for some music, we're hungry and decided to have take out food, it was almost 8 pm , after calling a few places, be put on hold and never got back at, we decided to try the Happy Troll, they answered right away and they're so nice and helpful, I ordered the fighting Irish , with corned beef, ham and banana peppers, my husband ordered the northern Michigan chicken salad, with dried cherries, toasted almonds and secret spices and the soup du jour.
