The service was very nice, friendly and quick. My only complaint is that the restaurant smelled so strongly of cleaning chemicals. I came back home with a headache. I had ordered the pork sisig and some garlic rice. And knowing that the portions were fairly large we were able to share it amongst our group of 4. My fiancé had ordered some of the street foods- fish balls, tokneneng, and kwek-kwek. All of that was delicious plus with all the dipping sauces-- amazing!! This is the place is for you. Went here over this past weekend. It's a BYOB so I picked up a few beers to bring with me. The waiter/owner asked if I planned to drink it here. I looked at him dumb founded and said yes, and he responded that he would have to charge a twenty percent service fee. This is nonsense as I go out to eat all of the time at BYOBs, and have never been charged a service fee in my life to bring my own beer or wine. I immediately wanted to leave, but just kept my mouth shut. How about a glass of water? Not so fast. He told me that I had to buy a bottle of water, "because the tap water would give me a stomach ache". The food was fine, no issues there. The place was nearly empty as there were only a few people, but it took over thirty minutes for the food to come out. We didn't order anything extravagant. I never use a credit card, because now that charge gets passed on to you as well. The people at the counter asked me if I had exact change. WTF? I'm doing you a favor. Cash is king at any restaurant, and you look like you're disappointed because I don't have the exact change? I also explicitly told the waiter/owner that I didn't want the bottle of water he brought out to the table, but he still put it on my bill. At the very least he removed it when I pointed it to out to him. Don't forget how you're now suggested about how much of a gratuity fee you should leave based on how much you spent as it's printed in large bold text on the receipt. The waiter/owner continued to smile & apologize as he could see my contempt and disgust, but that only makes it worse. Look, don't apologize, because you're not sorry. This is how you do business here, and that's how you role. I'd have just a little more respect for you if you didn't offer some phony apology and smile at me. It only adds insult to injury. I have been a frequent patron of this restaurant, typically ordering food via DoorDash. I have had some issues in the past (e.g., undercooked inihaw na liempo) that I have not made a fuss about since there were still edible pieces for me to eat. Today, I ordered fried tilapia and chicken wings. They were both overcooked and inedible. We rang the restaurant to let them know about the issues with the food. Once we gave them my name, they acknowledged I frequently ordered food from them. But, they proceeded to tell us that we needed to take the food back to them. After explaining we had ordered food delivery since we didn't want to eat out, they gave us the option to send them pictures of the food. My husband had to ring them back to confirm they saw the burnt/overcooked food. They apologized then but did not really provide a solution to our current problem - which is we didn't have anything to eat for dinner. Never disappointed when having a meal from here. My main go to is the inihaw na liempo with java rice and an appetizer of chicharron bulaklak. The liempo is always flavorful with a mix between sweet and savory which you can tell it's been marinated properly. For someone who really loves and enjoys all types of food, I must say I am pretty ignorant to Filipino cuisine. This place seemed the most authentic and had a good variety of meat and vegetarian options, as well as desserts and fun nonalcoholic drinks. The people that were sitting and eating were also clearly Filipino as they were ordering with the servers in Tagalog. The one real straight against this place is that there is no AC which makes eating hot meals feel a little less enticing. But hey, prob still more authenticity lol. My friends and I got all different things, and all of us really enjoyed what we had. I played it safe and got a few of the more popular dishes to start but I am looking forward to trying the more adventurous foods that they have on the menu. Everything we had was very well seasoned and textually interesting. -The veggie lumpia was very crispy kinda like an egg roll. We were told to eat it w vinegar so we did. Hah -The pork sisig was soft and crispy, garlic rice on the side was great. -Halo-Halo dessert drink thing was great. Not overly sweet. Ube and condensed milk and ice with jelly chunks. Really fun. I ordered UberEats delivery from here on a whim and was impressed with how flavorful everything was. - Inihaw na Pusit (stuffed squid): whole squid perfectly grilled on the outside but also filled with soft and almost creamy-like squid meat, tomatoes, and onions on the inside. This was the favorite dish of the meal! - Fried Daing na Bangus (fried milkfish): crispy fried fish, tasted great with the bit of that red vinegary sauce and a side of rice. Even though it was delivered, the dish still had a nice crisp to it without turning soggy. - Grilled pig ears skewers - two street food-style pig ear skewers. These were nice and appetizing, but I found them slightly difficult to chew on. Although tasty, I probably wouldn't order these again. Had a great meal overall and definitely would order from here again. We got the stuffed squid, crispy kare kare, and pork sisig. I probably wouldn't get the stuffed squid again--it was a bit tough to tear apart to eat and I found it a bit bland. The crispy kare kare and the pork sisig were great--the pork belly on the kare kare had a perfect crispy skin and the stew was so rich and flavorful. The pork sisig was similarly flavorful and loved the bits that crisped up on the hot stone plate. I did find the pricing to be a bit expensive, but the portions were fairly large and we had enough leftovers for another meal the next day. The only other negative was that they didn't have any tap water--we had to pay for bottled water. We didn't have any issues finding parking, but maybe we just got lucky. read more

Good Filipino restaurant in Jersey City. Tried a few dishes and found the Crispy Kare-Kare to be my favorite. The sauce tasted just right and the crispy pork pieces complemented the sauce very well. The bangus steak was very good as well. Fish tasted fresh and it was deboned very well, didn't have to fuss with spitting out bones. Inihaw Na Mamok was my least favorite. The chicken was charred on the outside and it seemed the chicken near the bone was slightly undercooked. Also the yellow rice was very bland. I suggest to order the garlic rice if you looking for a more wholesome flavored rice. Will definitely try the pork sisig next time too. Parking is tough in this area. Terrible Customer Service - Check Your Takeouts! I wanted to support this small business, but after my recent experience, I won't be returning. My girlfriend and I ordered squid and java rice, but when I got home--an hour away--I discovered they gave me four cups of garlic rice instead. I should've checked before leaving, but I trusted them to get it right. I called the restaurant six times before someone finally picked up. The person on the phone didn't even bother to take my phone number, instead asking me to call back in 10 minutes while they checked if the squid was left in the back. When I called again 15 minutes later, another girl answered and gave me the same story. Then a lady named Charmaine took over, repeated the same line about checking the back, and said they were busy right now, asking if I could call back tomorrow. What kind of customer service is this? They made the mistake, yet they expect me to keep calling them back? And the excuse is that they're busy? The whole situation was handled so poorly, it felt like they didn't even believe me about the missing squid. Do they really think I have time to waste chasing down a $20 squid order when I live an hour away? This place was going to be my go-to spot whenever I was in Jersey City, but after this experience, I'm taking my business elsewhere. It's disappointing because I prefer supporting small businesses over big chains like Max's, but if this is how they treat their customers, they've just lost one. read more

What wasn't cool was that when our food start coming out almost all of the crews ( servers , cooks and all) started setting up their table so they can eat their lunch. Kare Kare (peanut sauce stew) (4/5) - The kare-kare peanut sauce was heavy, the Lechon kawaili bits were crispy and the tendon was tender. I wouldn't mind sharing this with one person and then just getting a bbq stick. Pork sisig (4/5) - Classic sisig, not the best I've had, but definitely hits the spot. It was a little crispy (a lot of places don't even manage this), and the sauce was full of flavor. Definitely add the vinegar to this dish, and eat it with some nice garlic rice. Filipino pork bbq (3.75/5) The sauce is a good flavor, and the doneness/char is good. But some of the meat on the stick is way more tender than others. It would be nice if it were more consistent. Thankfully there's always at least 1 fatty piece on each stick (in a good way). This would be my 3rd time eating these bbq sticks, and each experience was a little different. Garlic rice- (5/5) Their garlic/java rice is good. A bit oily, but thats what you want. Add an egg to what you order and some white vinegar and this is the rice dish that goes with any Filipino dish. First was the most popular Bangus Sisig - honestly I wasn't a fan of the sauce. But it did come huge and the fish was fried just about right. I'm so happy to have a good Filipino restaurant in JC! The turo-turo restaurants are okay if you're in a fix or want food quickly, but the quality is always lacking compared to a true sit-down place. I'm very picky about Filipino restaurants, and this is one of the few I really enjoyed. This restaurant would be comparable to Max's in price and quality (though this is a mom and pop shop). Be aware that they cook your meal to order, so it can be a bit of a wait to receive your food! Order ahead if you're in a rush! We ordered here twice -- once for take-out and once for sit-in. The food takes around 25-40 mins depending on what your order. Some highlights are the pork sisig, pork belly sinigang, and lumpiang shanghai. These are all top notch, and I would return to order these again! If you like a very sour sinigang, this is the one for you! They loaded our dish with so many pieces of meat and veggies (it's a bit pricey at $22), but I wish we could have refilled the broth!! Yes, it's that good! We have also tried the lechon kawali (good), fried calamari (good), patatim, grilled bangus, and bbq chicken. My family liked most of the other foods we tried, the bangus was a bit rushed (likely as we were also in a rush). The do charge per serving of rice, and I wish some of the dishes came with rice (only the bbq chicken does). Also their "garlic rice" isn't true garlic rice. Fish balls would've been perfect had they been fried an extra minute or two. The sauce was super delicious though! The bangus sisig looked promising, but it was completely dry. The flavor was there, but definitely overcooked. Last, but not least. The tortang talong(which is not pictured) was actually solid, but they put ketchup on top and kinda ruined it..... C'mon, y'all should put it on the side and give people the option. Not all people like ketchup on their eggs. Also, I don't understand why I have to pay for rice when ordering an entree?
