Took a quick trip to the "Philippine Bread House" today and grabbed a few yummy things! First off, the parking is extremely small and narrow. There are only a few spots in a tiny lot, making it very tough to park. That said, if you're planning on going, make sure to plan accordingly (ie: bring a small car, come earlier). Inside is relatively small, consisting of a bakery section, a hot food section, and a few tables to sit and eat. Both the bakery and hot food sections include a wide variety of options. I tried their palabok, which was okay, nothing extraordinary. However, their ensaymada and fresh baked pandesal are both very delicious! In terms of pricing, everything is priced fairly. Also, the staff is nice. Overall, this is a great Filipino mom-and-pop shop that I've been going to for years, and I would recommend others to stop by if they're in the area. read more

Came here for the hot pandesal and did not disappoint! The most affordable pandesal I've seen so far at 30cents per piece! Other baked items like the mamon and ensaymada are only good if you are craving for Filipino panaderia type. I got sick for eating late lunch menu. The tables were left uncleaned after customers left. I had to find a clean table. The employees ate on the dirty table by the customers for their lunch break. The quality of the cakes are not the same. They look slightly dilapidated. The sansrival is very yellow. It should not be if you use real butter. We came from Texas for their hopia, and I was fortunate to have gotten the last hopia baboy! We visited in the afternoon, and it's nice to see they're still popular for their hopia. One could smell the aroma of fresh bread from the parking lot! Went to the wrong entrance (side door facing the gated parking lot adjacent to the building) and saw a huge kitchen area full of trays of delicious bread. Was told sternly by one of the bakers to go through the front entrance by the main street. It was busy in the late afternoon. There was a long line and a younger lady who was handing out the orders was pretty impatient when she saw me pause for a few seconds to think about what to order. I expected a lot more baked goods like the ones in the philippines but not much varieties but they sell their baked goods for a good price. The Philippine Bread House is virtually a historic monument in Jersey City. I don't recall a time when we didn't pick up some type of bread from this bakery. Sad to say it is a shadow of its former self. One can say they "jumped the shark". We went in for lunch after going to the DMV. We were super hungry. The food was cold and the lechon was rubbery. My wife spent over $70 dollars on food to take home in addition to the meal we sat down to eat. In addition we bought bread to take home which was over $100. In total almost $200 of items. I asked an elderly woman in front if we can have a plastic bag. She said she didn't have any. This was odd because my daughter was charged thirty cents by a young girl near the buffet for a plastic bag a few minutes before we left. Imagine purchasing almost $200 dollars worth of items and paying 30 cents for a plastic bag. Ridiculous. In addition the older woman and a male worker were very rude when asked if they can get one. Totally disappointed with the poor customer service especially from an older woman. I for one will never patronize this establishment ever again. read more

I got a bag of goodies from here. The Ube brioche was super soft and had the right amount of Ube in it. The Ube flan had the Ube base topped with regular flan. That's a good amount of flan in that small cup. The appearance is deceiving. The bibingka was normal, usual sticky rice packed densely topped with burnt caramel. The pitchi pitchi was quite unique. However, if you're going to call yourself the bread house I would've expected there to be a large variety of bread to choose from. Quality dropped really hard. The ensaimada ($2.25) was really dry and inedible. It was at least a day old at that point. Food waste is awful and all, but bread that old should be given away or put in a discount bin, or fed to the birds. Not at all acceptable if you're expecting something fresh from a bakery. Best ensaymada consistently!! There are a few places that sell Filipino pastries, but this place has my favorite ensaymada of them all. Don't get this confused with empanadas which are mostly savory pies. This is a light and fluffy brioche with butter, sugar, and cheese on top! Sound like a weird combo? Try it!! I heat mine in the microwave for 10 sec and eat with coffee. Their other desserts are also pretty good. We like the silvanas and maja blanca. My parents love the hoping here as well. I haven't been here in years. My mom used to send me to buy pork adobo buns. So happy it's still here! We came for Enseymada, pork adobo buns, pan de Sal and some of the sugar donuts. It reminds me of when we used to visit my grandmother in Manila and eating pan de Sal with star margarine with sugar sprinkled on top. The Kulsinta is very similar to a steamed rice cake that's popular in my grandparents' hometown in China, as well as Hong Kong. I love this place. I'm a proud Filipino American, and I know good Filipino treats when I taste them. And I got all the treats. If you're not familiar with Filipino baked goodies, my favorite is the ensaymada regular. I haven't found a place that tops Philippine Bread House that isn't in the Philippines. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I found the breakfast service just okay. It was solid Filipino food but nothing special. Eat the ensaymada. You won't be disappointed. This place serves delicious and very affordable food!! I ordered the lunch combination of pancit noodles with okra and chicken adobo. The food was absolutely delicious, a huge portion and $8. The pastries look beautiful and so I got a handful to go, however I have not tried them yet. The atmosphere is very cozy, with plenty of tables and Filipino tv playing in the corner. The buns with Taro inside. They were lovely! But the servers were like "HE'S BEHIND YOU", and nobody was behind me. I got so confused. Then I realized I was at the "Pantomime Bread House." And even better was the really nice bubble tea which I was not expecting since the reviews said it wouldn't be very good. Service was also really nice especially from some of the girls here rather than others. And I could definitely spend many mornings in here sampling all the Filipino Delights. There were so many cute girls in here, in very skimpy underwear! Then I realized I had accidentally come (so to speak) to the "Pantyliner Bread House." They have a buffet inside here as well which I think is run by separate people, but I didn't go for that because the prices were high and I had a lot of other stops on my food tour coming up. Plus the reviews said get the bread and I got the bread and I was damn delighted that I did. The place was being picketed and boycotted by Jewish people when I came here. They talked about moving all the bread out of the shop and taking it to Williamsburg. Then I realized I'd accidentally come to the "Palestine Bread House." Definitely one of many culinary highlights of New Jersey, and definitely the best Filipino place I've been to so far (and I've tried quite a few, from Amsterdam to Cleveland!), or thereabouts. If you want Pandesal, then this is a good place to get it. Which they shld just stick with it. The other food like dishes for breakfast or lunch, it is not great and really below par in Any angle you take it. Theirs adobo, bangus, whatever dishes they are selling doesn't have enough seasoning and you can see that they have been reheated for a few days. They are not fresh. They taste rubbery on those bangus and surely an old one no matter how they try to refry them. I think they shld just stick to their pandesal. That is what they are good at. read more
