The pork belly karee was good with a nice savory and crispy flavor. The garlic rice was a generous serving. The pork bbq skewer was probably my favorite with such flavorful meat and sauce. Service (4/5): No issues with the service with the waiter helping us with questions and getting us seated. The food took a out 10-15 minutes to come out. Hadn't been to Max's in many years (as in close to a decade!) and, honestly, it wasn't as good as I remembered ... or either it wasn't great the previous 2 times I had been, but I was starvinggg to the point I can eat a hippo. First, and, foremost, GETTING HERE. Parking can be a nightmare in this busy part of Journal Square as I assume most customers will be driving to get here. Parking is not allowed on the side of Newark Ave. that Max's is on and it feels like the cars parked across the street are parked there for an eternity. There is a small (and VERY tight) parking lot with about 15-20 parking spaces about 150 feet west of the restaurant, but, once again, spots are a premium and there will definitely be a few "campers" inside waiting for that 1 car to leave. If you're lucky enough to find a parking space, when you finally walk in, the restaurant looks relatively small at first as the 1st floor has a few tables, but, they do have a 2nd level as well, which I sat in the previous times I dined here. The menu is a collection of classic Filipino faves, predominantly comprised of pork-based appetizers and entrees, which are the real cornerstones of the Filipino diet. Yes, there are non-pork foods, like chicken adobo, pancit, laing, but, if you're here to really feast, you HAVE to order something with pork in it. It's a rite of passage. On my most recent trip to the restaurant, we arrived at around 12pm on a windy Saturday afternoon and, we were very, very fortunate to get a table for our family of 4 as the restaurant was pretty busy as a large party of about 15 people took up 3 combined tables alone. Since my wife ordered ahead of time as I was circling for parking, I didn't really get a chance to take a close look at the menu, but it was far from my first foray into Filipino food so I already knew what was "good". Quick recap of what we ordered and thoughts. LUMPIA SHANGHAI Classic Lumpia Shanghai served here. Addictive to keep eating them. The pieces are a bit on the tinier side, but, nevertheless, great appetizer to wet the palette. Definitely kids approved according to our kids. LAING I typically love Laing (taro leaves cooked with coconut milk), but, for some reason, the taste was a bit odd to me this time around. Typically, the coconut flavor usually really comes through and dominates the dish, however, not this last time. It was decent and my wife loved it, but I wasn't a huge fan. CHICKEN ADOBO Nothing spectacular. Not to minimize the effort that probably went into making this, but it was basically chicken dunked in a ton of adobo sauce. Yes, it was tasty, but I didn't feel like it was something I couldn't make on my own at home. CLASSIC PORK SISIG Where was the sizzle?????? This was an entrée I was reallllllly looking forward to. I LOVE sisig, especially when it's hot and sizzling, which it was supposed to be, but it was just OK once again. Also, we probably should have ordered the crunchy pork sisig, which is supposed to have bit of lechon crunch in it. It was OK, but we've definitely had much better in terms of heat, flavor and crunch. LARGE GARLIC FRIED RICE Solid garlic fried rice. Honestly, I might have enjoyed this the most - sadly. Tried Max's for the first time and the place was packed--definitely popular among local Filipino families. We ordered the crispy pork belly kare kare, which came with a rich peanut sauce and a very generous portion of pork belly. Super flavorful and crunchy! I'm not Pinoy, but if you put a plate of Max's Batangas Lomi in front of me, I'll be whatever you want me to be. What is this dish and how did I live my whole life without it? Thick, chewy egg noodles in a bowl of saucy/soupy glory filled with deep-fried crispy pork, crispy veggies and Lumpiang Shanghai. It's savory, it's soupy, it's the definition of comfort no matter what country your ancestors came from. OMG, it was heaven in my mouth and I had to stop myself from ordering two more. We also got half of Max's Fried Chicken, which had a nice crunchy skin but was a bit dry inside. The Bangus Sisig is a must-order if you want seafood, esp. if you've never tried milkfish. So here's my review from Max's in Jersey City. This is our local neighborhood restaurant, and we decided to give it a try as many people go here. We tried out the chicken, some fried rice, and whatnot, and honestly, I can say that we were kind of disappointed. And the quality of the food isn't as flavorful or tasty as we hoped it would be. It kind of did leave us a stomach pain and whatnot as f it wasn't cooked properly. I had the lemonade, which was pretty good which was traditional. As well as their sweet ketchup sauce that they are known for, which I thought was pretty good. But honestly, the quality of food was not what we expected and hoped for. And honestly, I don't think that we will be returning here any time soon. The restaurant is located on a busy strip. Yes, there is a lot for parking but you still have to use the mobile app to pay for parking. We went on a Friday for lunch and the parking for 2 hours was $1.95. The inside is a good size for families. Immediately, we were greeted by the hostess and then seated right away. We were encouraged to order the family style meal which included sinigang, bistek, pancit, fried chicken, rice, lumpia, and drinks. When it came to the table, I was quickly reminded of how restaurants serve in the Philippines. That made my heart happy! The sinigang na bangus was so freaking good!!!! I loved it. Flavors spot on; I just love the sourness of sinigang. The bistek could have been better with seasoning. I'm very biased because my uncle makes bistek a certain way that I've been eating since the dawn of time and it just doesn't compare to Max's. Lol. The fried chicken, which I never had before, was very classic Pinoy to me! The last time I had fried chicken like that was in the Philippines when I was 16. We also ordered the chicken BBQ skewers and they were spot on with flavors! It was tender and tangy. My husband really enjoyed it. I didn't get to try the lumpia because it is made with pork and I don't eat pork. But my parents enjoyed them! If there is one thing that I think Max's, as a chain, needs to do, is provide a non-pork lumpia option. There are many Filipinos who do not eat pork and I just think it's time for staples such as Max's to get on board with serving various options. The pancit was also classically seasoned. My daughter just loves pancit so much and she enjoyed this one! I love that at the end of our meal we got flan! We didn't even ask for that. We all loved capping off our meals with it. So so good. Max's has a Mother's day bundle day special. We ordered for pick up, 3 days in advance as their website suggest. The day of pick up, they called and said there is no more crispy pata and adobo ribs which is part of the promotion. They wanted to sub it with lechon kawali and inihaw na liempo. It's a good place to take people if they are new to Filipino cuisine and may not be familiar with flavor profiles or know common dishes. The menu presents it in an accessible way (in contrast to kitchen style where trays may not be labelled and you have to ask what's what on the burners). I came to Max's Restaurant for the first time on a Saturday afternoon and I walked away with a full stomach! I was able to try some classic Filipino dishes that I've never had before and really enjoyed the different flavors. There's actually plenty of tables inside so I was seated right away and there were several parties of local Filipinos dining as well. The service was great and the portions are definitely a lot. We started off with the lumpiang shanghai, an appetizer I was looking forward to cause I love fried spring rolls and these are very similar to that. It was small and bite size but they gave a good amount and plated it in a fried lumpia wrapper as well! We ordered a ton of different dishes: kare-kare, classic pork sisig, daing na bangus, laing and paired it all with garlic rice. Everything was so flavorful on its own and each had its own unique taste. The garlic rice basically served as my palette cleanser! - Kare-kare: beef and oxtail with string beans, eggplant and bok choy. It's stewed in a peanut sauce that I'm not familiar with but the meat was very tender! - Classic pork sisig: this was primarily pork skin and pretty oily so definitely pairs well with rice. It also packs plenty of heat through the small chilis and needs the onions to cut through the oil. - Daing na Bangus: I've always wanted to try fried milkfish and this was pretty good. It was very meaty and had a good vinegar flavor to cut through the fishy-ness but towards the center was still pretty fishy. - Laing: unique flavor but it tastes exactly as the description - taro leaves with coconut milk. It's also pretty rich in flavor because of the coconut milk. Great Filipino restaurant to check out! The portions are big for the prices and the food is all very flavorful. I've been craving Filipino food ever since New Jersey was put on lockdown. Max's popped up on Seamless and I thought I'd give it a shot. For a chain Filipino food restaurant, it's not bad at all. Keep in mind that I'm still new to the Filipino food scene, so I'm not too adventurous when ordering and ended up sticking with the basics. Their lechon kawali, and lumpia were great. Both stayed crispy in-transit to my home. I would also recommend getting the garlic fried rice as a base for any entreé you're ordering. It has tons of garlic flavor and umami. I also ordered the palabok noodles, but wouldn't recommend it as it was lacking flavor and I personally prefer the thinner noodles commonly used for this dish. Lastly, if you want the full Filipino experience, purchase a bottle of banana ketchup at your local Asian food mart and serve it with your Filipino noms! I have fond memories of eating with my family in The Philippines celebrating a birthday or just a treat from my father. So when we went to NJ to visit my niece we made it a point to come to this branch. I came with my husband who never tried Max's restaurant. The place is classy. It has a first and second floor dining area. It has a fine dining ambience and a homey feel. Family oriented judging from the people eating there. As you come in you will be seated by the hist. Then a waiter comes right away and get your orders. They are efficient. The host takes care of the pick up orders. The waiter was quick to bring also the take out to the front desk. Then we ordered. I wanted to cry because it was all reminiscent of the past. I wanted to order everything but the trip going back to Va is long and I don't want to spoil it. But I still order more than I'm supposed to. The presentation of each meal is just adorable. Every order has a little dip sauce and very neatly piled. The max appetizer is perfect calamari and sweet potato fries. Enough to fill both of us. The pansit canton is one of my favorite and it did not disappoint. The crispy pata, my goodness. It is soft and easy to pull inside and the skin is so crunchy, not gummy. The taste perfect with all the herbs. Not to forget our fresh mango and fresh coconut juice. Taste fresh. The Max's chicken. The famous fried chicken soft and tasty inside and crispy skin on the outside. It taste the same as what I can remember of the Philippines Max overall. When we were planning our trip to NYC, the first thing that came to my mind is Max's Restaurant. Back in the Philippines, we always go to Max's for special occasions -such as birthdays, graduations- or just because we are craving it. The last time I had Max's was 4 years ago in Las Vegas so you can say that I am really looking forward to this visit. We had a reservation, however it wasn't really necessary because the restaurant is pretty much empty. We were greeted by helpful and polite servers. I also love how they put a "reserved" sign on the tables, because it made us feel special. Even before we go there, I already know what I wanted. I want whole Max's Fried Chicken and Crab Fried Chicken. These were our usual orders when we were still in the Philippines. We also ordered sisig. I really didn't care much on how their sisig tasted, but you can say that I am not a fan. The Fried Chicken was a bit small because they use spring chicken. It goes well with the Jufran Banana ketchup. The crab meat fried rice was good as well, but there were more rice than crab. Even though Max's is not the same as the one in the Philippines, this restaurant will still hold a special place in my heart. It will always remind me of home. My mother and I visit Max's Restaurant every now and then when she wants to eat Kare Kare. It's not usually busy when we visit, and we normally know what we'll order by the time we sit down, usually Kare Kare, sinigang na baboy, rice, and maybe an additional dish for variety. It's never too loud when we dine in but there's occasionally a large party dining while we're here. I think Max's is a spot that we'll always continue to visit. One SHRIMP fried rice, three chicken adobo, 1/2 chicken, pork belly,BBQ chicken skewers and two fish dinners. Everyone's food came out except mine and one other. After asking where our food was, our rice came out then eventually the rest. We discovered the shrimp fried rice was in fact CRAB fried rice. The biggest disappointment was the waiter coming over and grabbing two of the chicken skewers off the plate with his bare hand and WALKING it over to a DIFFERENT table and gave it to the guest seated there! Crispy, juicy, simply seasoned to have that salty and umami taste. Goes well with garlic rice. We also had sinigang- delicious! The broth was thick and market but you can tell it had a lot of concentrated flavors of tamarind, shallots, and the veggies were cooked nicely in. Sisig- there was no egg on top. But it was still the best sisig that I've tried so far. Crunchy from the pig ears, crispy from the chopped pork belly, tangy and creamy from the way they seasoned it. Since I love veggies so much I thought I'd try Laing. Dark green taro leaves braised in coconut milk. The consistency was almost like collard greens! The coconut aroma was delicious. The fish sauce was delicious. My only complaint- a little on the salty side for me. The whole family wanted Filipino food so we headed off to Max's. We were so hungry when we got there, we forgot to take pictures hahaha. We ordered fried bangus, palabok, bulalo, laing, and crispy Pata. The pritong bangus was masterfully fried. Nice and crisp on the outside while the flesh was still flaky and tender.
