    Bibingka (Filipino rice cake).
    Kim D.

I've only ever had the bibingka (Filipino rice cake), but that's more than enough to keep me coming back! Only $2 for one of the biggest, freshest bibingka I've ever had (and I'm Filipina, so that's saying a lot lol). And all their other foods look fresh and delicious, too. One day I'll get more than just bibingka, but it's just so yummy. They also sell other goods aside from food, so they're a good spot when you're looking for anything related to Filipino culture. Parking is a bit tough because while there's lots of metered parking (both street and a public lot), it's a very busy area. And also note that the people there are very kind and generous. My family had a fundraiser after Typhoon Yolanda, and they were one of our first sponsors to donate to our cause. I'll forever be grateful to them for that.

In a nutshell, this is a Filipino restaurant/bazaar where you can enjoy good Filipino food...with statues of baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary looking over you. The Restaurant: Very good home cooked Filipino food served at the steam table. Unlike most Filipino restaurants, they have a sizable offerings of fish dishes. Their "bibingka" (a Filipino pastry rice cake) is absolutely the best you can find outside of the Philippines. The Market/Bazaar: Seems like they have a little bit of everything such as religious statues, baskets, wood carvings, books/novellas, plants, Filipino ice cream ("mais con yelo" and "ube" flavors in effect!), garlic roasted peanuts that you can buy by the cup and Filipino X'mas decorations to name a few. At some point, I think they were even selling traditional Filipino formal clothing (barong). Also, don't forget their outstanding "siopao" (steamed bun w/various fillings) and "hopia" (Filipino version of the Chinese moon cakes). Yep, all of that in one tiny place. Crazy. But in a good way. Plus, it doesn't get too crowded esp. on Sundays after church.

Nice little hidden spot at the end of the block. Ube bread and baked goods where super good. They have lots of hot food and some combos and specials so great for a takeaway meal if you're in the area. Also found a few unique items lisome nice milk candy there and you can pick up a Calamondin tree or calamansi as you say in Philippines for some fresh squeeze at home.

    Hopia choices.

Best Siopao we've found in NYC area. We ship them to our family in Ohio. Have also used them to cater family events.

They were packed full of flavor and one if the best pork skewers I've ever had. We also had the pork sisig, which had a great mix of tender and crispy pork pieces. It was paired great with the garlic rice. And for dessert, we had the ube sipao, which came out warm and topped with coconut and filled with ube -- the perfect way to end a meal. They have a lot of small tables. Service was pretty quick and staff members were nice and answered all questions. It's a place I would definitely return to in the future.

It's not the biggest restaurant though, so we probably got lucky (you should definitely make a res). -- Pork BBQ skewers were so delicious! The BBQ sauce was just the right amount of sweet, and the pork was cooked so well (juicy and tender). Portion size did feel a bit small for the price point, though -- Pork sisig was good. I liked how the onions / sour flavouring complemented the savoury flavour of the pork. It was a bit too salty to eat by itself (and we didn't quite finish), but fortunately we had some rice on the side to mellow it out somewhat. -- Finally we had the bangus binalot, which was good too. Milkfish is not the most common to find in the US and I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great dish here. It did not feel too oily/heavy from frying, and the fish paired excellently with the fragrant garlic rice. Overall, I had a very nice meal, and the price point was not unreasonable. I think overall the food felt a little salty, but otherwise everything was quite delicious. I think they've moved (nearby) since my visit and I'd love to re-visit and try some of their other dishes!

The pork belly karee was good with a nice savory and crispy flavor. The garlic rice was a generous serving. The pork bbq skewer was probably my favorite with such flavorful meat and sauce. Service (4/5): No issues with the service with the waiter helping us with questions and getting us seated. The food took a out 10-15 minutes to come out. Ambiance (4/5): Nice shop interior with a medium size and plenty of seating. The light decoration are cute and the entrance with the garden sign looks quite nice. There is Booth and chair seating on wooden tables. Some of the tables look a bit worn out but overall still a nice shop.

First, and, foremost, GETTING HERE. Parking can be a nightmare in this busy part of Journal Square as I assume most customers will be driving to get here. Parking is not allowed on the side of Newark Ave. that Max's is on and it feels like the cars parked across the street are parked there for an eternity. There is a small (and VERY tight) parking lot with about 15-20 parking spaces about 150 feet west of the restaurant, but, once again, spots are a premium and there will definitely be a few "campers" inside waiting for that 1 car to leave. If you're lucky enough to find a parking space, when you finally walk in, the restaurant looks relatively small at first as the 1st floor has a few tables, but, they do have a 2nd level as well, which I sat in the previous times I dined here. The menu is a collection of classic Filipino faves, predominantly comprised of pork-based appetizers and entrees, which are the real cornerstones of the Filipino diet. Yes, there are non-pork foods, like chicken adobo, pancit, laing, but, if you're here to really feast, you HAVE to order something with pork in it. It's a rite of passage. On my most recent trip to the restaurant, we arrived at around 12pm on a windy Saturday afternoon and, we were very, very fortunate to get a table for our family of 4 as the restaurant was pretty busy as a large party of about 15 people took up 3 combined tables alone. Since my wife ordered ahead of time as I was circling for parking, I didn't really get a chance to take a close look at the menu, but it was far from my first foray into Filipino food so I already knew what was "good". Quick recap of what we ordered and thoughts. LUMPIA SHANGHAI Classic Lumpia Shanghai served here. Addictive to keep eating them. The pieces are a bit on the tinier side, but, nevertheless, great appetizer to wet the palette. Definitely kids approved according to our kids. LAING I typically love Laing (taro leaves cooked with coconut milk), but, for some reason, the taste was a bit odd to me this time around. Typically, the coconut flavor usually really comes through and dominates the dish, however, not this last time. It was decent and my wife loved it, but I wasn't a huge fan. CHICKEN ADOBO Nothing spectacular. Not to minimize the effort that probably went into making this, but it was basically chicken dunked in a ton of adobo sauce. Yes, it was tasty, but I didn't feel like it was something I couldn't make on my own at home. CLASSIC PORK SISIG Where was the sizzle?????? This was an entrée I was reallllllly looking forward to. I LOVE sisig, especially when it's hot and sizzling, which it was supposed to be, but it was just OK once again. Also, we probably should have ordered the crunchy pork sisig, which is supposed to have bit of lechon crunch in it. It was OK, but we've definitely had much better in terms of heat, flavor and crunch. LARGE GARLIC FRIED RICE Solid garlic fried rice. Honestly, I might have enjoyed this the most - sadly. Make sure to ask for some vinegar on the side as well so that you can let the rice soak it up. Service was good throughout. Our food came out quickly and the waiters/waitresses were attentive. Just wish the food was better than we anticipated.
