Mel and his Dad and the guys ALWAYS take GREAT care of my cars. I've been coming to them for quite a few years now and prefer them over any of the competition. The funny thing is--I'm not an anomaly--they don't know me from a can of paint. What a waste of money ($500) and time. I went to the shop concerned about a grinding noise when braking. I was told my rear parking brake needed to be replaced on the rear driver's side wheel because of rust. Really, rust, I drive my at three times a week. Anyway the shop replaced the parking brakes on both sides. I drove home no problem noticed. The next day the grinding noise returns. I took the car back to the shop and Jay confirmed the grinding noise; maybe the brakes need to adjusted. They adjusted the brakes but noise was still there. They replaced the rear brakes and Rotors; same grinding noise problem. Finally Jay's said, " I think the front wheel bearing maybe bad. I already spent about $1,000 of my money trying to fix this problem since you have warranty so I am not going to suggest that I remove the front wheel to confirm a wheel bearing issue." You are so right Jay, enough is enough, WHAT A WASTE OF MY $500!!! ALSO A WASTE OF TIME; MY CAR IN YOUR SHOP FOR A TOTAL OF 4 DDAYS. Conservationist should really consider putting Jay's Auto Services into their list of endangered species. To find an expert, honest, and fair mechanics these days is almost a thing of the past, but not here. They diagnose your car before you finish explaining your issue, they know what's the most cost effective way to fix your car based on value and condition of your car, and are honest enought to tell you when it is to your best interest if having dealer get your problem fixed rather than doing patch work just to make a buck as shops are custom to do these days. Left transmission pan plug loose, two days later it fell out and I lost all fluid and broke down. Had to be towed. They also stole an expensive flashlight during the appointment, initially put in the wrong gasket which caused a leak and burnt oil smell, and had my car from 8:20am till 5:45pm (45min after close). Did I forget the two hand-sized oil spots on the interior. When I called to ask for a refund on transmission work, the owner, Jay, told me I'd lose in court and that I was "confused" about my flashlight's whereabouts. read more

I went to Jay's for some shuddering issues with my car. They first proposed $1600 worth of repairs to fix the problem. I couldn't afford that much, so I had $1200 of work done on my car. After the fixes, the problem persisted and my car started stalling with all the lights on the dash coming on. I took it back to them and they told me that I now needed a new engine. I decided to take a day off and drive an hour to my uncle's car shop where he told me that they broke the PVC hose while doing the initial repairs which was causing the new issue of stalling out. My uncle said that they also did not tighten the transmission cap which was causing transmission fluid to leak and that it did not appear that I need a new engine. I went back to the shop to discuss this with the manager/owner and I was refunded the cost I spent at my uncle's shop to replace the PVC hose that was broken and that was being generous to make amends. My argument that I should be refunded all or part of the $600 labor charge that caused me to take a day off was not received well. The people at the shop were very kind and pleasant to work with, but at this point I am obviously skeptical of their ability to diagnose and repair. read more

I really appreciate Jay's. A family-owned business that really takes the time to care about their customers. Went there last week for a pretty expensive job, but Mel took the time to explain exactly what was wrong, and worked with me. He even drew out a diagram since there was something I didn't quite understand. The most impressive part was, once he told me he'd need my car for a few hours and that he didn't have any loaner cars, he offered for his dad to take me to work. And he did! If they screw up the job, they dont offer to make it right. Messed up a repair job and then started threatening me. Luckily I was able to show negligence of their work with photos and my credit card company came to the rescue. They refused to even listen to the facts about a the botched up job. Do not use this service shop. Several reviews had talked about them stealing items out of your car, so buyer beware. read more

Took my truck to another repair shop to look at my front end because Jays Auto could fix the front end correctly! After looking over the issue with front end they show me that when the new steering gear was replace by Jay's did not replace the bushing( which should have been replace with new rack) which created problems with steering! I took my truck back to Jays several times about steering issue and they did is recommend replacing or fixing other parts of the front end which weren't causing the problem and costing more money but no results! Spoke with them about situation they felt i should have brought back to them first.... why should i do that when they created the issue! The steering gear should not move side to side like that! read more

I'm a girl that usually takes my car to the dealership--I get a little worried about independent shops maybe not knowing my car, or taking advantage. That being said, I'm so glad I went outside my usual MO and came here! I had to get a MD state inspection for the whole crazy registration process, and the dealership wanted to charge $120! Jay's got me in the same day I called, and did the inspection for around $70 (if I remember right). I was in and out in about an hour, got my certification, and got my car all squared away with the state. I'll definitely be checking with Jay's before I go paying crazy dealership prices for maintenance and repair in the future! read more

These guys are a rip off. Took my car there for a EPC problem. First day they repaired a part that wasn't broken. Picked up the car 10 minutes later, all the lights are back, including the EPC. Brought the car back, Juan called me in the next day. Said they found problems they didn't find yesterday. Told me 800$ fixes today's issues. I asked will that address any of what I brought the car in for. Juan said no but we can get to that after I fix this. I asked if that made sense to Juan, after avoiding my question for some time Juan finally admitted it did not make sense. I asked for my car keys and if they would refund the labor for the part they repaired that they admitted wasn't broken. They basically refused and refused to have a recorded conversation with my bank when I stopped payment. Poor business practices. They were trying to play the guessing game on my dollar. They tried to rip Me off with a smile. Will never go back. read more

That same day, Mel, Jay's son, drilled holes in the front of my vehicle and installed the front license plate and switched out the rear plate. He performed this service without hesitation and free of charge. I found Mel to be genuine. The next day, I returned for the state safety inspection. In the waiting room I met several customers who have trusted their vehicles to Jay's Auto Service for many years, and they all had the same response. They return because they receive excellent service and competitive prices. Jay's do not pressure you to perform the services quoted. Instead, they provide you an estimate, show you a virtual program of the problem, and allow you ample time to compare the cost with their competitors. One of the worst experiences in customer service I have ever encountered. When I took my Jeep in I explained that I wouldn't be able to pay it off all at once, but wouldn't expect to take the vehicle until it was paid of. I was told as long as I had paid an arranged amount I could take the vehicle and make payments. Owner Jay would not honor the arrangement made with his mechanic. When I told him that was bad business he told me I was a lowlife with no money and told me that I must not believe in God because I questioned his business practices. I was then told that because of my attitude he would no longer honor the payment plan. I would have to pay off vehicle on my next payment. I asked him to write up a contract, he refused. Good know he can't tell me payment is due. I was also charged on the paperwork for the part that clearly says the mechanic broke however I'm expected to pay for the part twice. Also they did an oil change which I did not ask for. My vehicle requires 6 qts of oil. They put in 5 I guess I'm expected to finish the job. Not only will they never get business from me again, I will make sure everyone I know steers clear of Jay's, even if they're riding on one tire!! read more
