Had an Italian beef while at the Franklin Farmer's Market today. It was OUTSTANDING. My mom doesn't like spicy food and she still ate it because it tasted so good (it wasn't that spicy she's just a wimp). I've been to Chicago a few times but am not a local so don't have a ton of xp to compare it to, but I'm willing to bet this is the real deal. I've been thinking about it ever since I finished it. I have to go back and eat it ASAP. So good!

Tasty well spiced hot dogs and sausages at Franklin Farmers Market. Checked in for our two naked steaming hot bratwursts today. Friendly, friendly folks. Update: Jay has been so successful with his hotdogs, he's branched out to burgers and they are fantastic. And he has a food truck now. His fries might be the best in Franklin. I bet they are triple fried. Always super hot and fresh, well-seasoned with his crazy good chipotle aioli.

    This was $9.

It's OK. Born and raised in Chicago, imagine my horror when I learned I couldn't get Vienna Beef in the grocery stores after moving to Nashville a few months ago (Why not?). I was thrilled to discover Jay's Chicago food truck. I tried a few times and expected the hot dogs I'm familiar with from the hot dog carts on North Ave to Gene & Jude's to Portillo's but Jay's is without casing and nothing more than steaming a Vienna dog at home. And for $5, no. And the fries ($4) are good only because they use a fryer. Again I expected hand cut russets with the right amount of greasiness. I haven't tried the beef yet. Not sure if I'll be back.

Been here a couple of times I've never been disappointed. Jay's chicago serves up some really good hot dogs and sausages. I appreciate the delicious food and friendliness. The price is ok. Let me tell you about the meal I had. I ordered the polish sausage with the Chicago Fixin'. The fixins included a dill speared pickle, hot mustard, poppy seeds, Neon green relish, some pickled peppers, chopped onion, and some cut-up tomatoes. The bun was warm and soft. Other vendors give you a cold bun, not Jay's! When I bit into the polish sausage it had great consistency. The dog was firm and there was a snap when biting into it. I appreciated that snap. I think it signifies quality ingredients. This is far better than the dog at the old Sounds stadium. I also ordered some French fries as a side. What can I say? They were the standard regular fries. I ordered chili on top. This was much better chili than usual. What I really like about it, was there wasn't too much salt. Other chili, I've tried are just too salty. The heat factor was minimal. If I didn't know any better it tastes like it made from scratch. Who knows? I really wanted to give Jay's Chicago five stars, but I have knock off one star for the price and the neon green relish. I get charged about the same price as in a local baseball park. But because of the quality of food and the amount that I get, it deserves 4.5. Who knows? This is just my opinion.

If I didn't know better, I'd think I was in Chicago. It was perfect. If you don't like this, you don't like authentic Italian Beef.

I went with the Hogwood Sampler which comes with chicken, sausage, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork, plus mac-n-cheese on the side. All in it was $27.89 plus tax, which feels like pretty fair market value for the amount and quality of food you're getting. The food itself was incredible. Way too many barbecue places lean way too hard on sauce to do the heavy lifting. That is not the case here. Every single meat had deep, legit smoky flavor on its own and honestly didn't even need sauce. That said, the sauces were also excellent. The Alabama white paired perfectly with the chicken, and the spicy tomato-based red sauce had a great kick without overpowering anything. Drink selection was another pleasant surprise. They've got Coke products and Tractor Organic Beverages. I mixed their unsweet tea with the Tractor mango and made myself a mango tea that worked way better than it had any right to. If I had to nitpick, the side selection is a little limited for my personal taste. I'm always hoping for fries or hush puppies, though to be fair that's not uncommon for BBQ joints around here. I also ran into a sticky spot on the table that clearly hadn't been fully wiped down from a previous guest. That said, the food was good enough that it still lands as a five-star experience for me. Hogwood BBQ is an excellent choice if you're looking for seriously good barbecue in Franklin.

It's a counter service joint; you walk up, order, and then someone runs the food to your table. First off, they asked for a point of service tip; that bugs me when I'm ordering my own food at the counter and fetching my own drinks. The menu is fairly standard for a southern BBA joint; brisket, pulled pork, ribs, turkey, chicken. I am generally suspicious of any place that offers chopped brisket. Brisket is meant to be sliced and enjoyed as a slab of meat, not as a pile of hash. So, the chopped brisket sandwich was out for me. I asked if the brisket platter would be served as slices, and they assured me it was, so I ordered brisket with two sides. They recommended the beans and the Mac 'n cheese, so that's what I went with. They also asked me if I wanted the meat lean, marbled, or half and half; I took that as a good sign, and asked for marbled. They food came out in about 5 mins; just enough time for me to head to the soda fountain and fill my own cup. Maybe they should tip me? On the plus side, the portions were pretty large. I'm guessing that the served at least 6-8 ounces of brisket, and the individual sides were pretty large as well. On the other hand, whoever sliced the brisket simply didn't know what they were doing. They sliced it WITH the grain, producing slices full of stringy meat. Stringy meat that was hard to cut with the plastic cutlery provided. I find it hard to believe that anyone who regularly serves BBQ brisket doesn't know to cut the meat against the grain. The meat appeared to feature a nice bark; however, on further exploration, a) the bark was so tough that it couldn't be cut as all with the plastic cutlery, and b) when I tore into it with my fingers and ate a piece, it had no taste. Not even a basic Texas salt and pepper rub could be detected. A large portion of tasteless, poorly cut meat does no one any favors. The beans were a little underdone; IMHO, that's far better than mushy, overcooked beans. However, they, too, had no flavor. No spice, nada. The mac and cheese was shells in a white cheese sauce. Strike 3; zero flavor for the sauce. I don't know how you can make cheese sauce without flavor, but they managed to do so. I have never, ever thrown as much food away at a a BBQ joint than I did today. What a shame. Not recommended, not even a little bit. Try Martin's or Edley's; if you prefer a chain, Mission BBQ will do you much better than Hogwood.

It provided a cool and refreshing place to have lunch inside on an extremely sweltering day outside. Ordering from their relatively limited menu was easy and convenient. Seating, on the other hand was - well, not problematic, but very limited because there are only about eight seats at the service counter. Fortunately, most of the seats were empty. Some of the dogs are the menu have a creative flare, and some are relatively traditional, such as the Chicago dog. The Chicago dog, my wife's favorite of any hotdog joint did not quite live up to her standards, but was still good. It combined a large beef hotdog covered with the traditional CD condiments, served on a slightly toasted bun. (Alas, not poppyseed). I chose the new "Hot Daddy"... another one of their long (perhaps 8 inches) all beef dogs served on a lightly toasted bun. This dog was topped with a tangy slice of dill pickle, housemates slaw, and then drizzled with a version of Nashville hot sauce, and ranch dressing. It turned out to be a delicious combination. The Nashville hot was not too hot, and provided a nice contrast with the creamy slaw and ranch dressing. I will come back in a flash for another one. Did not try any of the few sides they serve but observed other diners doing so and the Tots look just great. FYI ... generous portions all around!

I am a midwesterner who loves a good chili dog, this was really beautifully presented, flavorful chili, abundant enough with cheese and sour cream, and just the right amount of onions, the hot dog itself seemed really good quality meat, but it was all lacking in temperature - was barely hot which made it less appetizing. There was only one person working, so it took a while to get my order placed. I was really icked when she laid my plastic silverware down on the dirty unwiped bar. While I was eating next to someone who was ahead of me, the server was very clearly not wanting to be working - hiding out on her phone behind the wall, using her phone to text with gloves on then preparing the food in the same gloves, several customers gave up and walked away when no one came to the register, and at the end she just walked away completely and left it unattended. I want to assume grace, maybe just an off day, but could easily be improved by having at least two staff working. Overall, this spot could improve their customer service and ensure their food is hot enough to be serving and probably would be a 5 star experience.
