Decent haircut for what you pay for. I normally go to Paul Mitchell the school which isn't the fanciest, but it is a salon/stylist...however I am probably going to rotate between a barber and Paul Mitchell due to my budget at the moment. The girl that cut my hair probably did it in under 10 minutes which is so weird to me even though I used to go to barbers as a kid because of even sometimes waiting for 30+ minutes at Paul Mitchell or other salons. I am relying on Paul Mitchell to "texturize" my hair and JB to just give me a good cut. My hair grows ridiculously fast and I'm pretty sure they won't scissor cut it in detail the way Paul Mitchell does. I've been getting fades all my life and know a good fade when I see one. I've tried 3 different babers at this joint. The shop has a cool look inside, kind of ol'school feel. But thier fades sucks! When I asked to fixed a part of my fade they've responded with that's the best they can do, WTH?? They must not be real barbers.. I am not a picky guy, but I do appreciate a good quality fade. I had to go home and fix their half ass job. Yeah it's $8 a hair cut. But I am use to getting way bettter fades for a just couple of dollars more. The 3rd time was not a charm. I've been finding it difficult to find a decent barber that is easy and convenient and reasonably priced, so this place was a bit of a revelation. $9 haircuts, real straightforward. No appointments, first come first serve. You may have to wait a little while, depending on how long the line is, but it's pretty quick. I got a regular haircut, and it was quick and to the point. Just be specific when telling them to do, and you should be fine. It's a real relaxed environment, and the barbers are all very nice. They have these nifty compressed air things they use to blow the hair away, and that seemed super convenient. I don't know why other barbers don't use them, cuz i noticed that I didn't have that much loose hair all over myself. I'll be coming back frequently. read more

Your response completely justifies why you are such a dump. Since you view each job as only cutting hair, you will always be a barber that cuts hair for $10. If you viewed your job as someone that is there to build relationships with people, even in the small amount of repeated time they spend with you every few weeks, you probably would have a lot more success. But then again, you don't need me or anyone like me because your price is cheap. As I mentioned, that gumball conversation, though a while ago now, wasn't even a minute long, it was like 4-6 sentences and several seconds long. She could've asked politely. But the bad attitude of "I hate my job" was apparent in the way she spoke just as it is in your response. Had I known that we were going to have a quick conversation about gumballs right when the time came up, sure, I could have prepped the kid and done my 'fatherly duties' and taught him how to respect people's time. But this wasn't one of those planned moments and the one person that I'm sure could have cared less was the person after me. Jeff is a barber here who messed up my hair and then refused to return my money or fix my hair. I had the cops come in to talk to him and he was adamant with them too. His instruments are not sharp and he just is too rude. He has the first chair as you enter in the shop. I have left a message with the owner but not response yet. I went back after getting a decent fade from the Asian lady at the front of the shop. I went back hoping she would be there but only the old fat guy at the back was there. I wish I left and went elsewhere. He does not know how to do a fade. My hair looks like I did it myself. DO NOT let the old fat guy in the back touch your hair. I have 2 little boys (5 & 2). The female barber that is there on Mondays was amazing with them (would go back to see her but my oldest freaks when I say we are going there). There was a male barber that had no idea how to respond to my 4 year old. He ended up making him cry while cutting his hair. He then proceeded to cut my 1 year olds curls off the back of his head because "he's not Billy Ray Cyrus". Needless to say... went to this barber because of the reviews on yelp.... should have paid more attention to the negative reviews instead of the positive reviews. Friendly people, but I should have really thought twice when i saw it was empty. Couldn't have asked for a easier hair cut, really short and a simple line up. When the barber didn't let me see the back of my head it was a major "red flag". Walked back into work to my co workers all commenting on my hair. When we took a closer look, we really saw the horrible job that was done. Instead of a straight line on the sides and back... IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE WAVES!!!... Completely unacceptable. I do NOT recommend this place, at all, unless i hate you. I mean come on.... you go into a barber expecting quality work done... I went to this barbers for the first time today because it was the closest and cheap. I've always gone to Belltower Barbers in Lake Forest (off of El Toro) for the past 3 to 4 years. But I was lazy today to drive down and was actually open to trying a different place. Can I also mention that Belltower Barbers is only $7 where this place is $8? Anyways, my haircut is pretty simple but it's not "buzz cut" simple where you can just put on a guard onto a clipper and go around my whole head with it. Simple trim off the top, and a fade on the side. Not what I got... I know I know, it's $8, what can you expect. But that's like going to a cheap taco shop and getting a burger instead. I mean, at least get a little close! That being said, I only recommend this place if you're getting a buzz haircut. But honestly, if you're gonna get a buzz haircut, just do it yourself at home and save the $10 ($8 + tip)! If you want to get a cheap and decent haircut, go to Belltower in Lake Forest. This place is horrible. The guy who cut my hair was nice enough, but the entire vibe of the place was unfriendly and unwelcoming. I don't get a complicated haircut. Mid-high fade, bald on the sides faded up to a 4 or 5. Very clean and high and tight. I don't need any fancy services, but I DO expect my barber to take some pride in his job and in his services. I don't need to be pampered and I can appreciate an old school barber shop. But this isn't old school. It's just old and apathetic. After I told him what I want, he told me "I don't use buzzers or razors, just clippers". This is a barbershop and you don't use razors or buzzers? I didn't even ask for a straight razor on the sides, just an electric face razor to get it bald and smooth. Not only that, but my haircut was un even on the sides, one side went higher than the other, he missed spots on the top, etc. I had to fix it myself when I got home. Very disappointing. Even lived close to one of the guys and would chat with him when we met while out for our evening walks. Open on Sundays as well. This is a barber shop on the corner of Walnut and Newport Ave. Outside it says "$8.00 Haircuts" which is the price of a regular haircut, what I got. All the guys that cut hair are in their 40's or older. There's a 32" TV hanging from a wall but if you are in the waiting area it's hard to see because of the angle and if you are getting a haircut you can't watch a whole lot of TV so you settle for listening to it. They have an "air hose" that blows off the hair from the neck it's not there all day and down the back, that's very good. Basically, no muss, no fuss; get a haircut and get out in 15 minutes or less. There was nobody waiting when I went. I don't work around here but I suspect parking could be an issue during lunch time on a weekday, lot of lunch places in this micro strip mall. Even on a Saturday, parking is a little difficult. I liked it ok for me, the price is right and it's not better or worse than the chains IMO. I will be back. read more

Okay Yelpers, The sign out front says "$8 Haircuts". Don't expect to find any foofoo here. This place is fast and cheap and thats why I love it. I'm fine with the employees not starting up a small talk conversation with me while I'm in there because my only purpose there is to get my hair cut. I've been to JB's for several months. All of the staff are very friendly and hospitable people. I have never had a negative experience from any of the staff. Haircut-wise: The guy who sits down at the far end, very friendly and talkative, his haircuts have been the worst. The fades have been inconsistent and usually not even. I had to have a second haircut AFTER his. It's happened several times and an avoid. The middle cuts decent about 50% of the time. There are some slight inconsistencies, but not nearly as bad as the one who sits down. On short fades, bad haircuts are easy to see. It's not to the point where it's horrible, and I will agree price-wise I guess you can't complain. The asian guy has always cut my hair pretty well. There was one time where he didn't cut it short enough, but that was just one situation. I was once waiting for him to cut my hair and he's like "he can help you down there" ......the one sitting down...and I ended up getting a bad haircut. I have not had the female cut my hair before I have nothing negative to say about the personalities of anyone, however; it's a barber shop and the haircut quality leave little to be desired. If the asian guy cuts my hair, I'll go there every time, but for the other 2, I'll go elsewhere. One positive is they get through haircuts fairly quick. I've never had to wait more than 10-15 min any time that I have went. TL;dr The guy who sits down (Maxx J.) is horrible (which he admits to.....see response below). As a regular of this place for over 4 years, let me clear the air for JB's Barber Shop. NUMBER ONE: The haircut is either $9 or $10 depending on the cut, according to the barber. NUMBER TWO: Cutting in line? If at any point you get up and leave without telling them, most likely you will lose your spot in line. Don't walk in like a ghost in July expecting top notch service. Acknowledge that you are there and just be chill. NUMBER THREE: I've received a haircut from Jim, two other male barbers, and the female barber and not once have any of them given me lip or trash or rude service. Maybe I'm the lucky one? I doubt it. NUMBER FOUR: Keep in mind most barber shops are cash only so come prepared. Otherwise the nearest atm is at the 7-Eleven across the street. NUMBER FIVE: $10 is not expensive at all. Go to almost any barber in West LA and you're looking at way more expensive prices. NUMBER SIX: Remind yourself, are you going in for the experience of a lifetime, or are you going in for a simple haircut? However, I'm sorry to hear that there have been bad experiences for others. It strikes me as odd, then again, maybe it's still a matter of time until I receive a not-so-good experience at JB's. But it's been over 4 years since I've been coming here, and I can say, these guys are doing their job to get it done. Again nothing fancy, but I think it's a pretty good barber shop in my opinion. No better way to spend a Sunday morning, than getting a fresh cut at JB's Barber Shop. This place is a throwback to the old school barber shops of the 40s, 50s and 60s. When I walked into the place, I felt like I walked into the scene of a movie. Salt of the earth, rough around the edges barbers making constant banter. Frankly, I felt like more of man just being in there. Its a small space, with four barber chairs, all types of kitsch on the walls, and retro sinks. The sinks were diagonal to the chair ,and just totally added to the retro/old school/vintage vibe of the place. I would not be surprised if there were some high-stakes poker games going on in back during after-hours. The guy on the end, I think he was the owner, is this old, mean-mugged, fat, bald guy, who couldn't fit the scene any better than he did. He sits down when he cuts, and seemed like a straight forward, no non-sense type of guy, who demanded respect in his shop. The music playing was old school Sinatra, among other hits of my grand father's time. As far as the cut, for $8, there's no better deal in town. I am totally satisfied with my haircut. My barber was a bit older, and you could tell he had years of experience doing this. He cut my hair exactly how I wanted it, with me barely telling him anything. He knew what I wanted, almost instinctually. Everything is clean, neat and trim, with seamless blending from top to bottom. I hesitate to even write this review because I want to keep this place my little secret. A true gem of Tustin, that has been around for 27 years.
