JC Auto Repair is my go-to fix-it shop for my 2008 Honda Civic. Frank, the owner, is extremely honest. I've taken my car to him several times lately after going over bad bumps or potholes, thinking I'd wrecked the undercarriage, to ask him to put my vehicle on the rack and inspect it. He has always done so, with a smile and no complaint--even at 4:30 in the afternoon, right before the shop closed! And, after inspecting it, he found no problems--and told me so, instead of trying to talk me into any repairs. On the other hand, a few months ago, when one of my brothers told me my muffler was going bad due to a loud hum in the cabin, I went to JC Auto to get that fixed--but after driving my car around the block, Frank said the problem was my engine mounts. After replacing the engine mounts, my car was quiet. While JC Towing was towing a crashed yellow Corvette a piece came flying off and hit my brand new car in another lane. It cracked my bottom bumper. A guy named Sal was driving and pulled over but refused to give his insurance information. This appears to be a dishonest shop. When we called they asked us to prove it. This was a brand new vehicle for crying out loud and Sal knows a large piece of the Corvette came flying off and hit our car. It is an expensive clutch but not only was their price very competitive and fair but they took my truck in on that Saturday afternoon and I had my truck back Tuesday evening. I felt like a priority, but also felt that I could trust this mechanic. This repair was simple. New front and rear brakes. And again quick service. Called at 215, in at 3 and had my truck back at 5. My car had been stalling intermittently and _nobody_ could figure out what was wrong. My go-to guy had been unable to make it stall. Usually a jump would make it start, so we figured something in the electrical system-- alternator or battery, but both tested fine. Anyway, my car stalled in front of JC Auto, on a Saturday, and while others just honked at me (yeah, I'm stopped in the middle of the intersection just to bother you, jerk!) a good Samaritan helped me try to jump it. Frank came out and tried to help, but we couldn't get it going. So he and my savior pushed my Acura MDX (not a tiny car) into his shop. He told me he would check it out for free and I left it with him and went to work. He called me at work and said it had started up just fine. I couldn't get to it before he closed, so he kept it over the weekend, and took another look at it on Monday. Once again, it started up fine, and he couldn't find anything wrong. So his advice was to keep driving until it died again and tow it in dead. He never ever charged me. I was too scared to drive it because I don't like driving a car that stalls while I'm cruising down the road. Losing steering and brakes at 35 mph is scary enough! Didn't want to go on the freeway. My regular guy, on a hunch left it out overnight on a chilly night, and it turned out the battery was the issue after all (it had been checked multiple times). Frank may have not been able to solve the mystery of my stalls, but he proved himself an honest mechanic and a gentleman. Both seem to be a rarity. I don't blame him for not figuring it out. It took my regular guy a week with my car and a cold night and a hunch to get the answer. But if you are looking for an honest mechanic, especially as a woman, Frank is definitely someone to see. If he had figured it out, he would have gotten five stars. But he gets all the others for being honest and kind. And to the good Samaritan, whoever you are, thank you! He said he imagined how he'd feel if his wife was sitting in an intersection with a dead car and no one helping her. Guys, when you see a woman with an obviously broken down car, think about that. Frank is the most honest mechanic you will ever find! I first came here last year - upon recommendation - when a hose burst and caused my car to overheat. He replaced 5 hoses for 1/3 of the cost quoted by a franchise auto shop. Recently he repaired an oil leak that was "fixed" by a shop i went to prior. He explained every detail of the job he was doing and replaced the exact parts he showed me (one being a new part that was installed incorrectly by the former shop). The price was still extremely reasonable for the intense work that was put in. Most importantly, he doesn't try to upsell unnecessary parts or push random repairs to make his money. Fabulous! Seriously a God send! Our daughter's car broke down and she literally rolled in front of JC Auto Repair at 1230 am. The next morning, all we had to do was call Frank to have him look at her car, and he immediately assessed the problem and had it fixed within hours! What we thought was going to be a totalled engine ended up being a $125 fix! We were so grateful that our daughter didn't have to buy a new car!! Frank & Sal were excellent. We had broke down on a long road trip just outside of alpine. After our 1st attempt at tow service from another provider fell though after waiting nearly an hour and a half. We contacted JC and Sal expedited our tow and came out personally to help us. Being under a time constraint and needing to be in San Diego for an appointment he got us towed to JC and we were able to make that appt. Frank diagnosed and repaired our failed water pump, timing assembly and cracked radiator in less than a day and did so at a very reasonable rate. Not only that on our return trip Frank asked us to stop in and free of charge checked everything over to reassure us that our trip back would be worry free (and it was). After 19 years, the alternator in my 1996 GMC Yukon finally died. My vehicle had to be towed. My tow truck driver, Louie, recommended JC Automotive on East Main St. in El Cajon. I had originally contacted El Cajon Auto Electric, but they acted like they didn't want my business. Louie told me most places only want to work on new cars and that auto businesses think that people who drive older cars don't have money. As it turns out, JC Automotive in El Cajon specializes in older cars and works on all years, makes and models. Frank at JC was very nice and took excellent care of me. I am very skeptical of Auto Repair shops since I worked for Automobile dealerships (Cadillac) for 20 years and I give Frank and JC Automotive 5 stars and 2 thumbs up! My family has been going to this shop for about two years now. We have always been treated well there. There was one incident where an inexcusable mistake was made with my dad's brakes but my dad took his truck back and they fixed his issue no problem (my guess is that since these were brakes, he'd rather be safe than sorry and right his wrong. he would not have done this had it been something else). Well i recently took my car there for some suspension work. My loyalty caused me to drive from Rancho Bernardo to El Cajon just to take my car to this shop. i told the owner that my suspension is really bad and i also asked if he could fix my bumper for me. My father doesn't live too far so i took his car back up to Rancho Bernardo. The owner told me he'd call me before the end of the day to give me the diagnosis as well as an estimate. i did not get a call. i had to call him and he said he tried to call me multiple times but i am a person who cannot live without his phone so that was not true at all. Anyway, he told me that i need new suspension all the way around, The Works. He also told me that my exhaust pipe was cracked and that i needed new exhaust pipe hangers. i trusted him because i had trusted him for the past two years. We agreed to do the rear of my car. He would completely repair and rehang my exhaust pipe and give me new shocks on the back which would solve my suspension issues in the back and that would cost me $500. i said let's do it. Fast forward to me picking up my car. It wasn't ready when he said it would be so i had to leave work to get my car. i pick up my car, get on the freeway and when i hit my brakes the front of my car started vibrating like hell. It was so bad i pulled over on the FREEWAY to see what the issue was. i couldn't see anything. It was so bad i turned around and took my car back to my dad and asked him to take it back for me because now i have to get to work which is even more inconvenient. i know a good amount about cars. It was as if my rotor was violently bent while at the shop. Before i took my car in, it made no funny noises. The only reason i took it in was because the suspension was awful. Now, half of my bumper is hanging off to the point where it's been rubbing against my tire. My automatic locks no longer work. My car makes a painful sound upon starting. You know how an old or fat person gets up and starts to walk and how they make all kinds of grunts and noises letting everyone in the room know that they are struggling? well my car now makes the car version of those noises. And to top it off, my driver rear door will not open at ALL. How the fuck does that happen?! The owner refuses to fix any of this. Now i could somewhat understand if i was a first time customer but my family had been loyal to this shop for years. i will never never never ever ever EVER again spend a penny at that shop or recommend anyone to go there. i understand people make mistakes but at the same time, we must come to an agreement about some type of compensation. The only compensation i wanted was my damn car fixed. If you ever have to take your car back good luck. read more
