JD House.

I came here for Bed & Breakfast and only got the BED. It was one thing after another and I would recommend staying elsewhere. 1. When I booked the Captain's Landing room back in June, I was told that the room would be paid in full at the time of purchase. Which is fine. It was expensive and what you get is not worth it. When I went to check in, I was told I had a balance due which I was shocked because I thought it was charged and paid for already. I went through my credit card statements and it wasn't charged so I had to pay for it. Do not tell your guests they will have to pay for it now and don't do it. 2. I received a phone call to let me know that the sparkling water I had requested was not in stock. They had MONTHS to prepare for my arrival and it wasn't prepared. When I checked in, the front desk clerk told me he went out and purchased sparkling water for me which was a nice touch but it was so weird with the phone call and then it was done of a sudden?! Why cant you just buy it and surprise the guest? 3. The room was like the photos but the house is very old and it shows. Yes, everything is remodeled but it's still old and dirty. You can see yellow stains in the walls of the restroom. The shower is old and not modern. You can see cracked walls and doors. Once you enter JD house, it smells like mold. Stuffy. Old. Worst was a weird piercing humming noise that went on and on before bed. Then it turned off luckily otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep. Then in the morning the humming noise came back again. 4. The straw that broke the camel's back was that we were forgotten at breakfast. THIS IS A BED & BREAKFAST! How can you FORGET BREAKFAST? The most ridiculous of it all!!! NO EXCUSES! We were promised breakfast will be delivered between 830-9am. All their emails tell you that. The guy who checked us in told us that we will have breakfast by 9am with a knock on the door. I checked outside the door at 9 -nothing. Ok, maybe they're running late. Checked again at 9:15am- nothing. By 935am, I texted customer service and the chef responded saying "For some reason you were not on our breakfast list but I can have it there in 15 mins." (See attached Text Message) OH REALLY? How on earth did you miss that? You certainly did not miss that I didn't pay for my stay when I checked in. Somehow you missed breakfast. So, like I said I just got the bed. Breakfast was eventually delivered by 10am. It was Meh. Stay elsewhere if you're visiting Mendocino. This place is sad. Lacks customer service. Just old and sad.

Nothing like the pictures online, not great service to rectify the situation when we told them it was nothing like the pictures, ended up having to spend more money to stay somewhere down the road for the night before driving home. Would recommend not booking this one unless you confirm with them that this is not the room they put you in. That shower! A $350 motel 6 haha.

Part of the blue door inn group. We chose the King Deluxe Water View (Osprey Room) as we really wanted an ocean view. Room: spacious room with plenty of sunlight. The mattress was a bit soft for my liking, but the sheets were some of the softest that I've had the pleasure to sleep in. There's a nice large soaking tub. It was overall clean, but was showing its age and could benefit from a fresh coat of paint. The fireplace is a nice touch and will make the room quite comfortable during the winter. There is a coffeemaker and mini fridge. I wish they had screens on the windows as bugs were attracted inside by the light at night. You do get a great view of the ocean. The view would have been even better if the location was right off the cliff to hide all the houses and give a sense of privacy. Food: Around 9am, they drop off a breakfast set outside your door. It came with coffee, orange juice, toasted cheesy bread, egg salad, and granola. Food was solid, but would had been nice to have some hot items. Wish there was a table to eat on in the room as well. We ended up using a side table and sitting on the bed. Between 3-6pm, you can stop by the front desk to get a half bottle of white wine and cheese box that was a nice touch. Overall, BDI and the King Deluxe Water View was a great stay for a few nights, especially if you want to stay in town. If you're looking for a more secluded location with ocean views, you can check out Heritage House or Harbour House just south of Mendocino.

Chimney separating from the structure

It's very unfortunate that when this charming older building was remodeled in 2018, they chose to ignore structural issues that now appear to pose a serious safety hazard. Then the remodel got a splash of the Restoration Hardware catalog mixed with poorly installed and mismatched cheap finishes. We were in the JD House building of the Blue Door Inns. My partner is a general contractor and tried to tell staff about the structural concerns, but staff didn't seem to care. It's not so much that the floor isn't level or that it moves, it's that the walls shake when you walk across the room... and we're not big people! We suspect a broken joist or that they removed a load-bearing wall without adding a structural beam to support the structure. There were also inconveniences and other problems. The hot water takes several minutes to actually get hot in the bathroom (problematic especially in a drought). The balcony door is hard to open and there are broken boards on the deck. The shutters in the bathroom are broken, and the bathroom is very dimly lit. The tub makes a noise when you flush the toilet, like the plumbing is improperly vented. You can hear other guests very clearly from in your room. The fridge growls like a bear all night. Breakfast was okay but not great. There is no desk service of any kind after 6pm. Definitely not worth the price. Most b&bs we've stayed at in Mendocino are great, quality spots. It seems like the blue door folks are trying to make a quick buck off of that reputation.

My wife and I recently stayed three nights at the JD House. Recommend as long as you have your expectations in check going in. The room is very simple but very comfortable. The TV and refrigerator were an afterthought but we were grateful they were there. The breakfast was very good. All three days there was different variations of an omelette, fresh fruit (as a parfait or plain), pastry, coffee and orange juice.

We stayed in the Treehouse room, and it was absolutely gorgeous. They even left a welcome note for us with our names on it. It had a tiny kitchenette with a microwave and fridge, plus everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The room also had coffee, tea, a tea kettle, and a coffee pot, and they even emailed us in advance to ask what type of creamer we wanted in the room, including almond, oat, and half-and-half options. One of our favorite parts was the real wood fireplace. It made the room feel so cozy and special. The bed was also super comfortable and warm, and we fell asleep with the window open, which was perfect. Eric and the team also give guests access to the lobby area, where you can play games, read books, and enjoy homemade cookies and lemon bars that they leave out for everyone. It was such a sweet touch. The entire property is beautiful and open, and there is a short trail down to the beach, about three minutes from the property. Around 5 p.m., we saw locals walking their dogs and hanging out by the beach, which made it feel even more charming and peaceful. Breakfast in the morning was amazing and included with the stay. Eric explained where all the ingredients were from (local) and even accommodated gluten free guests. Overall, Allegra has everything you need, so you really do not need to bring much. It was cozy, welcoming, and such a special place to stay. Big shoutout to Eric who went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable. He drew us a map of local restaurants he recommended, all of which were amazing! We will definitely be back soon.

We did an easy self-check in and were greeted with a cute card, a small bottle of local wine, and some of the best chocolate cookies and lemon bars ever. We loved enjoying the view from our room with the ambient warmth from the wood-burning stove. The real gem was the freshly made breakfast served in the main house each morning. My husband and I were blown away by the flavors and freshness of both of our breakfasts and easily could have stayed longer for more. The staff here is very responsive, friendly, and really made us feel welcome. We absolutely would recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a quiet escape in Mendocino.

The girlfriend and I recently went up to Mendocino for her birthday weekend during December…read more14-15th, 2024. This review is for our 2 night stay in the Bessie Strauss Suite. Now, for starters, when I think of a room "suite" you're expecting pretty nice amenities. You definitely want to feel like you have the comforts of home at your disposal. This room is listed as having. . . White Water Ocean Views King Featherbed Wood-burning Fireplace Mini Fridge Private Bath Tub and Shower So, let's get into it..... Firstly, I found it very easy to reserve the room via the app from Booking.com It's one of my preferred travel reservation methods, and the Inn Keeper John later reached out to confirm payment details and to charge the room just before my stay. That part was very simple. We arrived on Sat 14th around 3 ish in the afternoon to be greeted by one of the hosts named Diane. She is very welcoming and friendly. Gave us a little tour, asked if we needed anything, showed us to our room, etc. Diane gets 10 stars for her individual role within the Bed and Breakfast. Mind you, December is VERY cold in Mendocino. Some roads can be flooded. The ocean waves are angry but beautiful. It's windy and rainy. It's cold!! But I am dating a winter snow bear so she likes to feel the chill while retreating to a comfortable room. For this review, I am going to simplify it with a pros/cons list of how the experience was for 2 days, 2 nights. PROS --- Diane makes homemade cookies daily. Delicious! Delicious homemade breakfast served daily outside the room (picture) Wonderful upstairs views of the ocean tides Best homemade pesto sauce I have ever had during breakfast A very large plush king sized bed with like 12 pillows A mini fridge which is appreciated Strong fast wifi connection A seating area to eat cookies and interact with other guests Walking distance to the town of Mendocino A large enough room where we didn't directly hear too much noise above or below Up front parking right by the Inn You have a set of keys to come and go at all hours from the front locking door to your room. CONS --- Featherbed, you say? It is so plush, that you have zero support for joints. For those of us in our 40s, we went from a relaxing massage in town, to waking up with back and joint pain from it being too feathery. No support. Tub and Shower? Sure. They even have a cute lavender sleep bath salt. What could be the problem. How about that the tub only filled up with barely lukewarm water. My breath has more heat. The tub and shower wasn't cold, but it definitely did not warm us. My partner had to use the tea kettle to boil water and pour me a bath. The lamp on one side of the bed kept flickering and wouldn't turn on. We had one lamp across the room by the sofa. One small lamp on the other side of the bed. One very wobbly lamp on the table by the bay view window. And the bathroom lights. The room is dark and dreary. Oh, let's not forget the wood-burning Fireplace. I have never been so anxiety filled near a fireplace. The fireplace is the only place to really have warmth. The room itself is large and drafty so it will get cold. There's a tiny space heater behind the couch but that does nothing. You could touch it with your hand. The fireplace chain screen that is there as a safety measure so you don't have fiery embers flinging out on the carpet or worse, on you, doesn't close all the way! It is very old and outdated. Downright safety hazard! I was cold every day, and every night. I couldn't get heat from the tub, shower, fireplace, space heater or anything! Obviously, we cuddled and had the bed blankets, but then your back hurts from the pillow softness. The couch is more comfortable. I am not even going out of my way to find negativity with the stay. This is just how it went! For the price of this suite, my experience was very disappointing! I have been cold ever since! We would not stay again.

Loved the food, the wine, the bath amenities, and the setting is nearly impossible to beat if you like a quiet retreat for a vacation. This year we decided to go back and stayed in Heron. Again, we were so happy to be here. Tremendously relaxed, barely looking at our phones, taking walks and having incredible conversations, etc. Eating breakfast on the balcony and looking out into the gulch and onto the Pacific Ocean was incredible. With the room provided binoculars we saw whale spouts out in the ocean. I didn't believe it when my wife told me until I saw it with my own eyes. Mendocino is lovely with a fun selection of great places to eat, the park overlooking the cliffs is a great place to run and walk, etc. One other thing I wanted to mention - I got a somatic Reiki experience with Alex, and it was truly profound. I've gotten Reiki for years but this was on another level. I am deeply grateful for that experience and it's continued to resonate with me for weeks after my return home. So if you go, I highly recommend this experience.

I was told that because we were notified of the construction when we literally checked in at 3 PM on a Friday, we could have cancelled the day we arrived. So, we were supposed to then try to locate 4 rooms (our entire party of 8) at another establishment the day of our check in? This is egregious and shady and clearly the ownership has their own interest of earning cash as their priority, NOT the guest experience. Photos of the construction from our room attached as well as a video but of the constant noise. 2. When I complained that the noise of the construction was way too loud on Saturday 7/18 at 2:30 PM (after we just dealt with the noise Friday, AND the loud music the workers were playing, and singing to) I was told that the noise from the tools would cease within ten minutes. That was a lie as it continued well past 5:30 PM that evening. 3. One week prior to our check in date, I requested a massage appointment via the BGI inquiry. I was never contacted. I then called the Wednesday prior to check on the status of the massage appointment request. I received a return call on Thursday 7/16 and the woman actually said "we never received the online inquiry, we're not sure where all those emails are going. I'll find out what is going on and then call you back." After she asked me my preferred spa treatment and date/time, we hung up. I never received a return call. I also never heard anything from anyone regarding the spa appointment after checking in on property. 4. Two of the 6 items they offer for breakfast were unavailable BOTH days we were there. Neither the burrito nor the chilaquilles were available during our stay. Sunday 7/19 the kitchen was out of sourdough toast. 5. We told staff that we would not be having the Bento Box on 7/18 yet I still received a phone call from BGI where they said they knew I was out to dinner but wanted to know if I still wanted the Bento Box. 6. After returning from dinner at 8:30 PM on Saturday 7/18, not a single staff member was available. Both my brother and I called the phone number to get a hold of a staff member to no avail. The overall feel is the staff are "out to lunch" and the owner clearly only cares about his bank account. We will not be returning.
