Had made an appt for inside but they claimed the previous guests have not left so we were seated outside. Truthfully it wasn't bad but if you make a reservation then you expect the time to be respected. If the previous guys have over extended their visit you need to ask them politely to leave. I have mixed feelings about this place. We were here for two nights. If we return to Mendocino we will probably stay somewhere else. Breakfast was included but we had to pay a 20% service fee. We ate one dinner there and two breakfasts. The service was abysmal except for Tuesday morning when we finally had a waiter who knew what he was doing. Much appreciated. There are so many great restaurants to try in Mendocino, don't waste an appetite here. Great location. read more

The MacCallum House is, in and of itself, an experience because of its location. But the staff and food is fantastic. If you have the opportunity to get to It try anything on the menu! I loved my stay at the MacCallum House! I stayed in the Gazebo Playhouse which is the smallest/cheapest room on the property, but it was cute and it did the trick for my short stay! The property itself was beautiful and conveniently located near everything in town. The staff was also really friendly and made sure I felt welcome. Perfect Spot for a Mother-Daughter Getaway I stayed in Room 11 at the MacCallum House with my daughter and her friend as a little end-of-school-year treat back in June. It couldn't have been a more enjoyable experience! The room was cozy and comfortable -- perfect for relaxing after a fun afternoon at Big River Beach. The fireplace was a nice touch, and the private hot tub was a hit with the girls after being at the beach. The location is ideal: quiet, but just a short walk to shops, restaurants, and the Mendocino Headlands trails (where we walked to watch the sunset). Room 11 had just the right amount of space for the three of us, and it felt like a peaceful little retreat. Would definitely come back for another girls' trip! read more

The room rate included a full breakfast. They served it with homemade bread and jam which was delicious. The staff were all pleasant, helpful and responsive. Higjhky recommend this place. read more

I was very disappointed in the grounds around room 34. The main house has such beautifully maintained gardens and the contrast was very disappointing. There were fox tails and tall grasses around the plants. Behind the unit - looking out the back window - there were stacks of literally "junk" that should be hauled away. We did not use the hot tub because the area looked dank and dirty. Although the food and service in the restaurant was good, it seemed odd that only room #34 did not include breakfast. We could not get the heater to work and I called the main desk at 9:06pm on the first night of our stay and left a message and there was no reply or follow up the next day. When I told the clerk about this issue at check out, I was told that I should have read the black binder - that there was an innkeeper number I should have called. I sent a message to the manager with feedback and did not even get the courtesy of a reply. I would not recommend a stay here. read more

I had the great fortune to stay at the MacCallum house mid-May 2025. A delightful, sun-filled property with old-world charm and modern amenities. My room was tastefully appointed, had a warm cozy electric fireplace that brought the room alive, and just outside the door, a private patio and hot tub! The king sized bed was just right with rich cotton sheets and multiple pillows to arrange a comfortable night's sleep. The included breakfast was delicious, large and served in the windowed front room looking out over the town and portions of the coast line. They were preparing for a wedding the following day and the wedding party was enjoying their stay with a beautiful tent covered outdoor venue. A truly stunning location for an event. The town of Mendocino is a delightful , pedestrian town filled with unique art, restaurants and classic turn of the century buildings. Well worth your time and enjoyment. Stay away from this hotel! You'll thank me for this. Overpriced and terrible customer experience. The hotel staff is unresponsive and untrained. I paid $700 for 2 nights, but received 2-star motel service and room. There was no fan, no bottled water, and barely any amenities, and you had to go to reception (which was 3 blocks away) to get anything. The window netting had a hole in it, so we were bitten by mosquitos and there was a dead fly on the bed when I arrived. We called the hotel staff at 11pm and they said we had to wait until tomorrow to get the fan and window fixed. They never fixed our window. They never delivered the welcome package they had promised and when I asked about it, another receptionist said she didn't know anything about it. I should've heeded the first receptionist's words. When I told her I was excited to stay at the hotel because of rave reviews from media outlets, she said, "Don't get too excited. Stay here first. You'll see." They added an extra bed charge to my bill. I called 5 times, leaving messages with the receptionist and over voicemail. They never responded! What kind of scam are you running??? read more

We stayed one lovely night at MacCallum house and the food and drinks were so delicious that we didn't even leave the grounds except for a lovely walk around town! I love the vibe of both this lodging and the entire town of Mendocino and the fact that the developers have been kept out. It is a true trip back in time! Fun fact-Mendocino is the spot where the exterior shots were filmed for 'Murder, She Wrote' so if you watch carefully you can see some favorite views! We were lucky enough to book the Gazebo Playhouse which was a tiny delight and perfect for me and my travel companion. We slept soundly and enjoyed the room very much. Late at night, while on a trip the bathroom which was in a separate building just behind the gazebo, I came face-to-face with a very surprised skunk! We both retreated and there was no further drama but what a fun thing! We had an incredible happy hour, dinner and breakfast at a favorite table on the porch with a view of the bluff and the ocean. The company, food, service and building were all fantastic. If you are looking for glossy, impersonal perfection-this place won't be for you. But if you love funky, back-in-time vibes and hand-made, heart-felt food and drinks (and dog friendly places), you'll love this place. read more

My family and I were driving through town on a Saturday and decided to stay a night. We had called all around and they were the only ones showing availability. Unfortunately the site would not allow us to book due to being same day. I called about 15 times over a few hours with no answer. We decided to stop in before we left town just to double check availability. We did get lucky and they had a room to accommodate us. The location is great and our expectations on accommodations were met (last min traveling with dog). The inn is old so don't expect modern perfection just because it's a 4 star hotel. Unfortunately this review has some bad parts which is why I only give it a 3 star review. We stayed on the hill in room 28 and upon arrival the door didn't unlocked. We attempted a handful of times to call and unfortunately had to drive back to the main house to speak with the desk. I waited about 20 mins for the person to show up (no one could find her) and she was the only one that could help me. I was handed another set of keys and explained how to open the door (not sure why I wasn't told at check in). You basically have to almost break the key off to open the door and it's clearly not a new issue. The staff was friendly but clueless at the same time which made asking questions difficult. We did return for breakfast which was good but same issue with non attentive staff. Overall you get a decent stay in a beautiful area but don't expect anything 4 stars and the staff is very frustrating. read more

My daughter and I recently stayed 2 night for a much needed getaway. . We were in Room 4 in the main house. It was not fancy, but that's not what we were looking for. The room came with everything we could ask for, a comfy warm bed, a mini fridge, and lots of charm , along with many other welcome amenities. The restaurant downstairs was very good. The room includes breakfast in the restaurant and you order off the menu, not a silly buffet! The food was delicious and the coffee was really yummy!! I would like to say that everyone we encountered at MacCallum House was very nice. They treated us like family and it was appreciated. Thank you for your kindness and hospitality. We hope to be able to return to Mendocino in the future and will definitely look up MacCallum house again. read more

Wow first experience at a 5 course restaurant. One of the courses was duck which is something I would never think of trying. It was absolutely amazing! My family and I stayed at the MacCallum House for a week-long getaway and all I have is great things to say about it! First off, the food at the MacCallum Restaurant is a 10/10 - ambient lighting, fresh food, and amazing service! Our hotel room was so cozy and the fireplace and sauna was a nice touch to the room, not to mention the gorgeous view from the second and third floor. We enjoyed our two night stay in room 9. The room was really cute, though a tad small. The grounds are so lovely and the location is perfect. Staff went out of their way to assure we were happy and comfortable. We really enjoyed having a private hot tub and side yard, especially in covid times, but the hot tub cycling kept my husband awake. So, something to be aware of if you are a very light sleeper. Quick tip: when we arrrived the ev charging was taken. But we noticed a lot of people seemingly not staying at the Mac House were using the charger because the occupants turned over fairly quickly. So, my advice is to check back if the chatgers are busy! read more

We stayed in suite 30, one of the more expensive rooms. It's a good location within town, but it's looking quite shabby. The carpet looks dirty, the furniture is also looking worn. The outside lawn of the building looks unkept. I think its time for some updates. read more

I honestly can't believe that I didn't write a review for this place, so here it is! My husband and I stayed here in Spring 2019, and loved it! The weather was pretty overcast and cold, but still super nice to be by the water. From my recollection, we stayed in cottage 8, and had a great time. Super sweet old-town feel to this place (if you like that sort of thing) --- like a clawed-foot bathtub! The view was nice, and we unfortunately didn't take advantage of the hot tub, but definitely would do that next time around! The bed was comfortable for me, and so were the sheets/comforter. Really nice and cozy and just a perfect get-away. The heater worked great and was much appreciated since it was pretty chilly that weekend! the surrounding area was beautiful, as well. Great place to go for a leisurely walk with quaint shops and all of that, as well! We had a very short trip (just a weekend), but it was well worth it. I won a free stay here from a workplace raffle, so not sure if I would come again because of the exorbitant price, but it was an amazing experience for sure! read more

We booked a two night stay at the MacCallum House for a "Superior Room" through Chase Rewards. Upon realizing that there are multiple different Superior Rooms on the property, we called the front desk to see if we would be able to pick a specific Superior Room during our stay. I spoke to Krista and she informed me that we were assigned a Deluxe Room instead and that all other rooms were booked for a wedding. A Deluxe Room does not come with the same amenities as a Superior Room and some are smaller than Superior Rooms. We would have only found out upon arrival that we were not getting the same room as the one reserved had I not call ahead of time. She explained that the rate that I paid for matches the rate of a Deluxe Room. But the rate that she quoted was not inclusive of the points I used as part of my payment, and we would have gladly paid more money if we were getting what we reserved for. The only solution provided was to "cancel our reservation and find somewhere else to stay" or stay at the assigned Deluxe Room. Warning to anyone who books a room from a third party website to make sure and confirm that you are indeed getting what you reserved. As a would be guest, we were disappointed at the lack of help to remedy the situation. I highly suggest that MacCallum house update their listings and make sure that whatever is made available online, matches the rate that they are looking to charge and actual vacancies. Falsely advertising a room that isn't actually available makes for a very unpleasant experience and creating a good experience for visitors should be a hospitality industry member's #1 goal. read more

We stayed in room 21. Thathiana was super sweet and helpful. Gave us and our puppy a newly renovated room. They have such a comfortable mattress.. like really plush and cozy. The room itself is the right size for 2 ppl. My husband did hit his head a few times as the ceiling was kinda like in an attic. We had the ocean view which made up for it though lol The bummer was that most of Mendocino is shut Tuesday and Wednesday. So the world class restaurant at Mac house was shut too. Thathiana was sweet enough to offer to make reservations for us at other fine dining rests which were open wed night. I love this place. We always stay here when we want to spend a weekend away and visit Mendocino. I would give a perfect review but a few inconsistencies result in a few critiques. Overall, however, this is still the best choice for stays in downtown Mendocino. PROS 1. Gorgeous remodeled and updated rooms. 2. Many room choices. Suites. Barns. Water tower. Attic. Carriage house. Etc. 3. Perfect location in the center of town. Although it should be noted that there is also a second building called The MacCallum Suites that is a bit out of the way but still in downtown. Not a major issue but something to keep in mind when selecting your room. 4. Full breakfast included in room rate. 5. Although room rates are on the high end, they do have occasional sales/promotions on room rates that can be quite good. CONS 1. Because there are so many room choices, all rooms are not created equal. Some rooms might be great while others are not so great. This isn't a huge CON though since you just need to figure out what you like. 2. Maid service can be a bit inconsistent. 3. Room rates are pretty pricey. 4. Some rooms don't have much privacy. 5. Limited staff so if you need something you may have to get it yourself. 6. Strict cancellation policy (because staff is limited) that results in cancellation fee if you cancel or reschedule. read more

This review is for dinner at the MacCullum House Inn -- we were not overnight guests but we chose to dine in the cafe for dinner. Wow. What a treat. The cafe feels like a giant greenhouse or birdcage -- floor to ceiling windows to let light in during the day. At night, candles light the table tops. We heard rave reviews about the Grey Whale Bar and its fresh fruits for drinks -- and the menu items looked solid -- so we came to MacCullum House for dinner. Service was top notch, giving great recommendations on food and drink (and never letting our water glasses run dry). The food was fantastic and by the time we got through starters (ceviche for me and tomato salad for him) and entrees (halibut with caperberries for me and a solid hunk of meat for him), our raspberry flambe arrived (promptly devoured in minutes) and we really wished we could eat more delicious food from the MacCullum House kitchen or drink another lovely mixed cocktail. Alas. Atmosphere is five stars. It makes the food taste better, the service even more warm and attentive, and I'd sit in the cafe versus the dining room just for the feeling of being in a Kew Gardens greenhouse once again. Our stay at the MacCallum House was by far the best getaway we have ever been on. The cozy, antique feel of the facilities provided a relaxed and quaint atmosphere that perfectly matches the vibes of a relaxing vacation. The restaurant had amazing food and drinks that paired nicely with the amazing views overlooking the small town. There are beaches and cliffs only a short walking distance away, with many small shops surrounding the inn. The staff at the inn were very helpful and pleasant to interact with. I was hopeful in California that an owner of an establishment would have the decency to welcome all patrons wanting to spend money, especially during this time, with gratitude and respect. Unfortunately- that was not the case. I overheard an employee in her 50's, dark hair, well dressed called a GUEST a "beaner" and shut the kitchen down until they left. Wonderful room (33) that have everything we and our sweet dog could want (hot tub,spa,fireplace, big bed and bathroom, lots of light, and lots of supplies for our dog). Pretty elegant, too - especially for Mendocino. Breakfast (not included anymore) was outside in a tent cause of COVID. I thought it would be tacky but it was actually really nice. The food was fabulous and the tent was pretty. Just heads up that it might not be a great idea to bring your dog to the tent cause the ground is gravel (or bring a mat with you - there's plenty of room). Just got back from our fourth trip to this bed and breakfast (first one since the pandemic). Unfortunately it has a new owner who doesn't maintain the facility very well. We got our regular room, Spa Room 33. There was very large weeds growing through the outside deck. Glass sliding door was filthy. A large ant infestation that is not being addressed properly (cleaning them/not killing them) since they were only gone a couple hours before coming right back. Whirlpool Tub not functioning. It could also use a good caulking. Heater/Fireplace remote is useless, and manual operation (that you must dig out from underneath) is either off or on, so it's freezing or overheating. We used to love staying here! However, they have lost us from coming back. They did give us a small plug-in radiator heater to help with the temperature control issues and promised us a 15% refund. Apparently they need a math lesson, because it wasn't even close to that. Overall, just more stressful, not a relaxing trip. Also, only B&B that we have ever been to that you have to pay a 20% tip to the server for a free/included breakfast and also the taxes. Such a scam! read more

Always a pleasure to stay here and I tend to pick a different room each time i've been which I think now has been like 7 times! They're always so friendly, accommodating and the rooms are very very clean! This time around I stayed in Room 9 (Abbey Blair) which was delightful with their updated colors, fixtures and that bed, oh that bed was nice! Felt like a swanky dorm room honestly with everything I needed like a fridge and microwave. The private enclosed garden was nice along with the hot tub, was able to get in a soak on the first night! With the stay you also get complimentary breakfast each morning but beware only coffee, tea and water are free. Made the mistake in ordering orange juice x2 at about $5 a pop, didn't make that mistake again! I think what I loved the most is its central location to the heart of the village. They have many entrances and exits so you can go many ways. Like the 7 other times, I will be back again in a heartbeat, specifically next year since BF and I decided to make it an annual one for sure! read more

Eat! The Grey Whale is a nice restaurant and bar with a bit of an ocean view and a sweet wrap-around porch for sunny mornings. Lupe's Breakfast Burrito is worth 5 stars! Hazelnut butter for the cornmeal pancakes, yummm. Great mimosas, grapefruit ones too. Not to mention canterelle omelets, the tofu scamble and cinnamon french toast WITH vanilla bean ice cream... Strawberry-basil mojitos and fresh huckleberry daquiris for happy hour! Floaty, dreamy gnocchi. Real cuisine and nicely cozy style. Sure all the customers are smiling because they are happy to be visiting Mendocino, but this place contributes mightily. A little expensive, but worth it, like the rooms. Stay! Cool place to stay, right in the heart of town. Nice hot tub and most rooms have jet spas to boot. Cozy, clean and not too small rooms with character. They have rooms in the Inn and cottages dotting the immediate site, as well as luxury rental suites and the Mendocino Village Inn nearby. All have a happy hour drink or appetizer and an amazing breakfast included. The price is standard for around here, as in not cheap, but the service is prompt and personable. The historical touches are well done and add a lot. The gardens are immaculate!!! This is a great get away. read more

Absolutely wonderful!! The food, the staff, the ambiance. Kudos to these guys. While taking a family vacation with the folks, we had been touring through the area.What a surprise to stop at this small inn and have one of my better meals to date. Whether it was the home baked bread (french butter?) the pulled pork tacos.... My niece's plain pasta? I am not going to try to pin it down to which item. I am just going to make sure I get back to this place real soon. FYI, they are a VERY friendly family restaurant. Someone had yelped that it was not good for children. Hmm.. My husband and I stayed Sunday and Monday night. The MacCallum House is a Beautiful B&B. The Gardens surrounding the property lavish. We stayed in room 1, it was very nice w/ a Big Comfy bed and Cool Large bathtub. We could see the ocean from our room. It was nice. I think next time we will try one of the rooms not in the house. We could hear the Bar and the greeting desk from time to time... so it was a bit like staying at homeones house... I was asking myself,can they hear me. I guess thats why I am not a Huge fan of B&Bs The staff was super nice, some of the other guests were a bit Stuffy and stodgey but, oh, well. The Food was FANTASTIC! My husband had the lamb shank... which he Loved. I had the duck... which really was the BEST prepared duck I have ever had.PERIOD.Good Solid cocktails served by friendly barstaff.Also, the BEST B&B breakfast we ever have had..
