Water Tower One on the ground floor was such an amazing room, tucked away in the garden, and detached from the main house it gave us privacy with the comfort of being close to the inn. We had an enjoyable 2 night stay at this quaint bed and breakfast (minimum if you stay on the weekends)! Check in was easy and card was charged the remaining balance at this time. Check out was simple, just leaving our keys in the room. We enjoyed the scone breakfast every morning and the simple but kind hospitality provided by the inn staff. There are no TVs or fridges in the room but there is a communal fridge on property. There is shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion in all the rooms and makeup wipes. They provide fresh towels daily if needed as the climate tends to not dry things in just one day. They also have an electric car charger if one is needed and ice. The parlor is a step back in time with coffee and tea and open 24/7 for guest use. They also provided in the afternoon - upon our arrival on a Saturday (not sure if this is the norm but a great touch!) The inn is right off of highway 1 but wasn't too loud, although could depend which room you stay. It is also walkable to parts of town about a quarter mile if you're willing. They provided flashlights as well if you go out at night- a nice touch! And I do recommend to see stars in unpolluted night sky! We spent one night in Water Tower I (ground floor, king bed) in April. We had a very good experience and enjoyed our stay. The team were very friendly. Check-in is between 3-6pm. Ken was mindful to call us and check on our arrival the day of. Gave us a lot of good tips on best areas for a walk to see the sunset. Even the on-property cat is friendly, haha! It was our first time staying in a water tower! Everything was spotless and very clean. Mendocino is chilly at night, and the heater plus fireplace kept us warm. Bathroom had a heater as well. The shower warmed up very fast even at 5am. We appreciated it. The complimentary amenities (tea, coffee) are available 24-hr in the common area of the main house. If you do not want to walk outside for the tea and coffees, I would recommend staying in the main house. We loved our more secluded room though!! The communal fridge is in the back of the main house. There is one EV charger. Our room had an iron, ironing board, robes. I did not ask for the hairdryer because I brought my own. Other guests were mindful and quiet. The breakfast scones and granola were so yummy!! The nice guy that worked during breakfast helped us check-out. We highly recommend Joshua Grindle to our family and friends! read more

Lovely bed & breakfast in Mendocino! Recently stayed at Joshua Grindle Inn for 3 nights for the New Year's and was very happy with my experience. It was very pleasant and relaxing from arrival to departure. First and foremost, the staff at the Inn were super friendly and accommodating. Check-in was a breeze and all the COVID precautions were taken so I felt very safe. The Library room I stayed in was very clean, cozy, and adorable. The shower was good and the bed was so comfy that I slept like a baby. There was no TV in the room as indicated but who needs a TV when you are in picture perfect Mendocino? Breakfast was prepared every morning for two seatings at 8:30 and 9:15am. A sheet with items of choice was provided each day ahead of time including hard boiled eggs, fruit cups, yogurt, coffee and tea, etc. I enjoyed sitting in the porch next to the heater, best seat in the house. Breakfast is a bit simple in my opinion compared to all the bed and breakfast I stayed at in the past. I would have liked some sausages, bacon, and egg scramble. But I completely understand the simplicity is due to COVID and all the items have to be individually wrapped which I appreciate. My only gripe is the fireplace in the Library room. Logs were provided everyday so that's a plus. I tried to use it the first night but the smoke wasn't completely going up the chimney so the alarm went off. The Inn keeper came quickly and helped mitigate the situation. I'd have loved to use the fireplace ever night if it wasn't because of the hassle. Hopefully they get this taken care of for future guests. But I can totally look pass this for now and still give Joshua Grindle Inn a five star. All in all, a wonderful little place to stay in Mendocino. Highly recommend! read more

Taking a spontaneous Valentine's Day weekend trip to the coast, my fiancé and I spent the night at Joshua Grindle Inn. We got one of the last rooms - we stayed on the first floor of the old water tower. Check in was super easy, even though we arrived a little late. There was plenty of parking and the room was comfortable and clean upon arrival. They left the lights on for us and even turned on the heat. I loved that our room had a fire place and all of the amenities you could need. There were even two red velvet white chocolate chip cookies left for us and a red rose. In the morning, we enjoyed the absolutely delicious freshly made breakfast. Ours was a spinach and feta quiche with sausage links and roasted potatoes. My go-to B&B in Mendocino. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. Beautiful, historic home situated on flower-laden, lovingly landscaped grounds that beg you to wander through them. (Do it!) Over the years we've stayed in every room in the main house. All are distinctively unique and beautifully appointed, and with differing price ranges. I don't have a favorite room, as they are all lovely. There are other rooms in the Water Tower, but I like staying in the main house, because I love the proximity to the parlor, where I often relax in their comfy chairs or plush sofa and sip coffee or tea, and devour freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Love their breakfasts of homemade quiches, bacon/sausage, home-fried potatoes, moist cornbread, home-made granola, fruit, yogurt, freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh coffee. One can enjoy a private breakfast outside on the veranda porch or inside at the communal table, where you can talk with the other guests. I do wish there was an option for a sweet breakfast of pancakes or belgium waffles, since I have a sweet tooth! Do yourselves a favor and allow your innkeepers to make a dinner reservation for you at any of the nearby restaurants. The quaint shops and eats are easily within walking distance, so leave your car and breathe in the fresh air! Jeff and Lindsey are gracious hosts and want you to have a memorable time in their neck-of-the-woods. Go visit them! You won't regret it. I promise. read more

Looking to celebrate our anniversary my wife and I found this charming bed and breakfast in Mendocino, Ca. Having arrived on Sunday afternoon just after the scheduled check-in time, Ken greeted us with great attentiveness and very informative about the particulars of the Inn and of the town of Mendocino. The master suite, (our room) was spacious and inviting. A large 4 poster bed, fireplace, comfy chairs, and a soaking tub in the bathroom were all great amenities to look forward to after spending our days in Mendocino as well as Fort Bragg. Every morning we were greeted with a delicious continental breakfast served in the parlor or outside. The grounds were spacious and inviting, if the weather was conducive to our sitting in the garden, we would have. They were in the process of preparing the fire pit for upcoming warmer months, and putting on gutters after a new roof was installed prior to our arrival, however, these projects were noticeable but not bothersome. The hired crews were very cognizant of the fact that there were guests on site. Overall, it was a great time away at this quaint bed and breakfast on the Mendocino coast. read more

I spent one night at the inn as I arrived in Mendocino around 8 pm without a place to stay, so I wasn't able to check out the place before I committed. The entire inn is carpeted with a worn, dirty looking beige carpet. The carpet in my room had stains in several places. The sheets were very thin and flimsy. They did not appear to be cotton. No TV or fridge. There's a steep flight of stairs to climb to get to the rooms. The breakfast is okay but nothing special--hard boiled eggs and a scone. The couple who run the inn are pleasant, but I had a problem with what they charged me. When I checked in, I thought I would stay two nights. The man immediately charged my card $443.96. After an unpleasant night, I decided to check out in the morning. The woman said no problem and that she would refund the difference which I thought would be half of the total. She behaved in a rather deceptive manner after I told her I would be leaving, avoiding giving me a receipt. So I never knew what my actual charge was for one night until I checked the charges on my credit card later. The charge for one night was $266.50. I called the man to discuss this with him as it's not what I expected. He made my inquiry all about him and his financial woes, the cost to run the inn, etc. No care for the customer! I'm a single senior woman in my 70s, and I certainly didn't get a senior discount! Bad experience at the inn. Bad experience with the owners. Seems a good place for older, well-established California couples with plenty of money. Not for a Montana lady on a road-trip to Northern California. Not a good introduction to Mendocino. I won't be back! Fort Bragg experience much better. Save your money stay in Fort Bragg on the beach! read more

We loved our stay at Joshua Grindle Inn. The room was very comfortable, quiet and beautifully decorated. The people working were warm, friendly, and made us feel welcome. My favorite part of our stay was having breakfast on the porch of the Inn. There is a heat lamp so we were plenty warm (there is also indoor seating option). I loved the breakfast, especially the " everything " seasoning scones. They are freshly baked every morning. Breakfast also included a sweet scone, hard boiled egg, homemade granola, yogurt and coffee. It was all simple but beautifully executed. We are already planning our next visit to the Inn. read more

On a road trip down the coast, Mendocino was our last stop before ending in San Francisco. After reading all the reviews for the B&B's we went with the Joshua Grindle Inn. There designated check-in ends at 7:00 PM but they were very flexible in allowing us to check in later as we arrived at 10:00 PM. Myself with two friends stayed in the Nautical room, which is in the main house. There was ample space for all three of us. The room is quaint and is perfect for someone looking to escape the busy city life. It contained a queen bed and a day bed, both were comfortable and the room was very clean. They provide a binder full of information about the grounds and the city, which was helpful. The wi-fi also worked well. Bathroom contained more than enough fresh towels as well as high end soaps, shampoo and conditioner. In the morning we had breakfast which featured home fried potatoes and a frittata. The service during breakfast was warm and welcoming. We had breakfast with the other guests in a cute kitchen area. They also have a parlor in the main house which serves cookies and coffee/tea at certain times during the day. We only stayed one night, but wished it could have been more as it was a super pleasant and relaxing stay. I'd recommend getting there before dark as the roads coming in are curvy and dark! We had a perfect weekend stay in this cozy historical inn. We arrived Friday to cold weather/rain and Ken had already turned up the heat and was warming our room for us as we arrived. Hosts, Ken and Kate were so warm and welcoming and full of historical knowledge about the house and Mendocino itself. We stayed in The Master room in the main house, where we enjoyed the jetted tub and comfy robes, as well as a working fireplace. Woke up to beautiful sunshine and on Ken's suggestion, we hiked a fun trail through Russian Gulch state park up to a waterfall. Breakfast at the inn was fresh and delicious and the inn is a mere 5 minute walk to restaurants and shops in downtown Mendocino. Loved everything about it, and the inn and every business we encountered was practicing strict Covid safe precautions! Even their flower gardens were already in full bloom (early March), which was an added bonus. read more

Me and my family usually stay at the MacCallum Inn which really is one of the best places to stay in Mendocino. My family has been staying there since my first boy was 1. They have the best breakfast and my boys love the private hot tubs. They have always been accommodating to families with small children. And I never had a problem staying in a room with one king bed. I have two boys now under the age of 8. I booked online a room with a king bed + day bed for one night because the MacCallum Inn is not available. I thought I would try Joshua Grindle but Lindsey, the owner I spoke to said her insurance did not cover a fourth person (my 3 year old) in the room we reserved with a king bed + day bed. Okay I will accept your no insurance reason but please be nicer and friendlier next time you tell a customer to cancel their reservation. read more

On Friday morning, my husband fell sick and I called to cancel/postpone my reservation. Spoke with Lindsey and found her to be downright rude. I don't understand how people who work in the service industry can afford to be so unfriendly to their customers. She flatly refused to make any exceptions for family emergencies and I didn't get any refund at all. No postponing either. Very money minded. read more

this place was very cute. last time i was in mendocino, i actually stayed in little river down down the road. this time, we were closer to town, and we could walk to the town from here. the owners were friendly, and the place was really clean and quaint. everything was just redone about 4 months ago, so it felt nice and updated. breakfast was good and plentiful with homemade quiche, sausage, potatoes, muffins, yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee. there are no tvs in the rooms, so it's a nice escape (altho there is wifi). we had a fireplace in the room, so it was really cozy for the cold winter nights. read more

I found this newly re-opened inn in Mendicino online and we stayed there one night. The inn-keepers were great. Super friendly, and breakfast (quiche, muffins and fruit) was amazing. The room was reasonably priced- we stayed in the Master- which had a beautiful bed and a fireplace. (We didn't love the log provided- it got a little smoky- so I recommend taking a couple pieces of firewood if you prefer!) The bathroom had a skylight and beveled glass between the tub and shower. Everything was very clean and tidy and the grounds were beautifully maintained. And the inn was only a short walk down the road to main street and the water. If you are going to visit Mendocino you simply cannot go wrong staying here. Great place to read or just relax. Nice parlor with cookies and a good assortment of teas. This is not a high end inn, with an exercise room and other services, but a really good, unpretentious B&B. The room was spacious, the bed very comfortable, and the fire cozy. The bathroom was a bit small, but that might be expected in an older property. We also appreciated the proximity to downtown Mendocino, which is a short walk away.
