A couple of Jean Fogg's landscapers have been maintaining our yard on a twice a month basis for over a year, and we've been very pleased. Do not do business with Jean Fogg. I expressed multiple concerns regarding the work he did and everytime he brushed it off like it was normal. I have spoken with two other landscapers in regard to fixing his work and they agreed that it was poorly done and parts were completely incorrectly done. My lawn is sunken in all over the place, sprinkler heights are all different, the border he installed looks terrible and was not installed correctly. Some sprinklers are so low they barely work. He called me picky when I brought this to his attention. Also, I had some drain pipes installed near the end of the project and I caught his crew using DUCT TAPE to connect the pipe ! He will not accept any responsibility for his poor work. He also talks badly about all his other customers who have concerns.. Jean and his crew wear safety masks and keep a 6 foot distance at all times. They completed our front yard landscaping and planted some mature trees in our back yard that are all doing very well! They were quick and clean and made sure not even a leaf was left behind! Jean is also very knowledgeable about water conservation and watering needs to keep plants and trees healthy. Jean has transformed my front and back yards! When I moved into my home, the irrigation system was shot, and the last major drought had begun. I lost multiple plants and the yard looked bad. I contacted Jean for help and inspiration. I knew I wanted to add hardscape and replace a number of plants but had no other ideas. We had a very positive experience with Jean Fogg Landscaping. We moved into our house in Lafayette around 15 years ago when the house was new. The original landscaping was almost an afterthought and the irrigation never worked properly and broke over time. Jean chose some great plants and trees for us and designed several stone walls and new walkways. The stonework was a major improvement, something we never would have thought of ourselves. Due to the drought, I wanted to re-landscape my front yard in Spring of 2015. I found Jean Fogg, don't remember if it was through Yelp or Angie's list. He came to my house and provided me with his ideas. I told him I wanted to remove the my grass at the time due to the drought and he suggested planting a different type of grass that is drought resistant and very appealing. He also suggested I switch my electric sprinkler system to the Rain Bird ESP Sprinkler Timer, with the explanation I wouldn't have to ever set it because the weather determines how often and how much to water. Along with all the other ideas, I agreed to all of his ideas, despite the cost being more than I had planned on spending. If I remember correctly, the costs was about $14,000-$15,000. He also asked if I would like to use his weekly gardening service and advised me of the perks of his service, which I don't remember now what the perks were. I do believe one was laying down bark every couple of years (at my cost). Despite his cost being $50 more of what I already paid, I switched to Jean's crew to do the weekly yard maintenance. After my front yard was complete, I was very happy with the results. HIs crew continued to provide weekly yard service. A couple issues with dying plants which he resolved. This past, I think May 2017, I noticed a large puddle of dark green liquid coming from my yard waste bin. Jean's crew had maintained my yard about 3 hours earlier that same day. I opened up the yard waste bin and saw 4 recyclable containers mixed in with the yard trimmings. A "cup of soup," plastic bottle of water, and two other containers that contained liquid. I pulled all four out, all empty. Based on what I saw, I assumed his crew drank and ate, threw the items in the yard waste, (AS OPPOSED TO THE RECYCLABLE CONTAINER-TWO INCHES FROM THE YARD WASTE CONTAINER), and whatever liquid was left poured out, into the yard waste and then out of the yard waste and created an almost look of dark, green oil on my sidewalk. I contacted Jean. He came by within a few days. He felt it was not the liquid from the containers, but condensation from wet grass. Since he's the "expert," I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I also asked him to tell his crew to use the recycle bin. I attempted to scrub the liquid from my sidewalk, but it stained it. I researched online, and the websites indicated wet grass like this will stain concrete. When I initially called Jean, I mentioned to him that I don't want to be a pain in the a**, but I was involved in a bike accident on Mt. Diablo in October 2016, was in ICU, and sustained a traumatic brian injury, and the less things in life to stress me out, the better. Jean said something to the effect of, "Oh..I know, I was in a bike accident recently..." and he went on to tell his story in depth about some young girl hitting him, knocking him over, he had some minor injuries. What I noted about Jean, as I told him I suffered a traumatic brain injury, it was very serious (I don't think I told him they didn't know if I would survive the skull fracture), and all of a sudden it's all about him and his injury. There was no comments of, "oh wow, sorry to hear that" any thing. It became all about him and his accident and being pissed at the young female driver and the motorists who didn't stop to help. My opinion from this experience is he's a little self absorbed. And if you readers out there don't know about traumatic brain injuries (TBI's) think of NFL players and head injuries and military personnel who have suffered an IED bomb. I've met people from both fields who have TBI's, so you can understand the severity. About 3-5 weeks later, I again noticed the liquid by the waste container, although a smaller amount. I opened up the waste container, and sure enough, an empty plastic water bottle, the same day Jean's crew was at my house. I grabbed the water bottle and put it in the recycle. I didn't tell Jean, I knew it was pointless. On July 18th, 2017, I noticed my sprinkler system in my backyard come on at 8:30 AM, which isn't right, it should come on around 5:30-6:30 AM. When I looked out my bedroom window at the back lawn, I noticed a sprinkler was not functioning, which explained why my lawn was dying. (See photos I posted on Jean Fogg's page (If he doesn't block them). Once he saw the photo of my dying lawn he admitted his guys should have told him. Jean fixed the sprinkler and the EAS Rain Bird timing. On Aug 6, 2017, I noticed my beautiful front lawn, the grass that Jean recommended when he re-did my front yard, was dying. Now I understand the excessive heat, but that's what the special Rain Bird ESP is for. I texted a photo to Jean (see his page) and a photo of my question. He said he would handle and once again did what needed to be done with the Rain Bird ESP, although he never really explained what the problem with the system was. read more

We tried for months to hire a landscaper to get an estimate on redoing our front yard and we either never heard back from those we contacted or were told our project was too big for their crew to handle. We are delighted that we chose Jean Fogg Landscaping to help us "redo" our yard. Jean recently completed an extensive renovation of our front and backyard landscaping including replacing our pool deck, building a new large outdoor kitchen area and a separate fire pit area, creating a walking path and other pathways throughout our yard, developing a vegetable garden area, replacing our lawns and updating the irrigation system and plantings throughout our acre of property. Throughout this process Jean has been incredibly attentive. He has an old fashioned sense of professionalism and pride in the quality of his work. He was on site almost every day of our project inspecting the work his crews had done with a critical eye to ensure that all the work was done correctly. If anything was not done the way he thought it should be, he had the crew correct it. During the process we made a number of changes to our original landscaping designs and Jean was always flexible about accommodating our changes. He was also very helpful in suggesting alternatives when certain elements of our landscape design plans were not working the way we expected. Our project came in on budget with the original estimate Jean had given us. Any time we asked for changes, Jean let us know how that would affect the estimate so we could make a decision based on the estimated cost for the change. Any changes we approved came in on budget based on those estimates. Since completing the project, Jean has been out several times just to check and adjust the drip lines to ensure the plants are getting the water they need. We are thrilled with the way our yard looks and really appreciate Jean's professionalism, attention to detail, flexibility and follow up even after our job was complete. We had moved into a house where both the front and back yards needed a LOT of clean up and TLC. Jean walked the property with me, gave suggestions as to what to improve and what to leave. He also suggested redoing the entire irrigation system (everything heretofore had been run of hose bib drip lines), which I was initially against but have since come to appreciate was sage advice. His crew was great - punctual and efficient. They worked through some of the worst downpours of the last winter laying down flagstones, as well as (once it dried out a bit) completing the landscape portion of the project in a timely fashion. We've been using his crew on a weekly basis for upkeep and are also satisfied. In fact, just recently we had a drip line separate from a bubbler and Jean dropped by the same day to fix it himself. We wanted a new patio to replace the horrible water drinking grass in our backyard. We had 4 estimates. Jean's was the most competitive and ALL of his references took the time to get back to me and tell me that they would highly recommend him. He had smart ideas about drainage - not only for the new patio but also to modify less than ideal existing drainage. He also did smaller things - poured cement around a loose fence post and fixed a gate that was hanging badly and wouldn't close. His crew was great - Favio was the foreman. I had this company come out to do an estimate. He was able to do the measuring and recommendations fairly quickly. He seemed frustrated that I didn't have WiFi, as he wanted to install his WiFi sprinkler system. He said he would email me a bid later. He also commented, "Seems like you don't have a big budget for this." It's true that I wanted something simple and not a huge design, but it WAS the entire backyard. He told me he'd email me a quote. The next day he said he has too many residential jobs and would not be submitting a bid. I do believe he knows what he's talking about and does quality work, but don't ask him to come give a bid if you don't have a huge budget as I now have the impression he only wants large jobs. I wouldn't be so frustrated except he didn't tell me to my face. He said he was booked out for a month, and would send me the bid. Then he told me my job was too small through email. read more

My experience with this business was unsuccessful. I contacted them for a large front yard makeover. I scheduled a site consultation based on their availability, and confirmed it several times. They were a no show no call for the appointment. When I followed up about this I was told they put it in on the calendar wrong and was rescheduled. I am an architect so I had prepared my own design and sent it in my original contact email to describe what I was looking for. They showed up on site with no knowledge of the plan and had not looked at it, so I had to provide it again. I mentioned I'd like the estimate to include line items for the various improvements because we may not be able to do all the work at this time with our budget, and that is how I was receiving other estimates so it would be easier for comparison. I was immediately told they would not be the cheapest...I didn't ask for cheap so it felt like a bit of an insult. The other contractor I had met with spent an hour with me going over the plan, discussing options that could bring things more inline with our budget, ways to phase the project, and showed genuine interest. This person spent no more than 10 minutes with me, mostly telling me about something design related I said I wasn't interested in, took a few measurements and left. I concluded at this time they were not the right fit for my project. They followed up the next day with an email saying they would not be providing a bid and wished me luck, with no further explanation. Guess the feeling was mutual. My conclusion, based on professional opinion (as I select contractors for clients as part of my job), is this business may not be the best option if you have your own design, are getting multiple bids (or maybe don't tell them, but as a design professional I think it is the respectful and smart thing to do), and definitely if you are looking for something "cheap". read more

This summer we had a small job that was an import part of a larger construction project. We were replacing a large section of fence. The complication was that our 30 year old jasmine hedge had grown into the fence. We needed to have it removed from the old fence without damaging it, then once the fence was completed have the jasmine re-trellised. Jean Fogg Landscaping rose to the challenge. Coordinating with the fence construction, they were able to come in two days before the fence replacement project was scheduled to begin. They carefully removed the jasmine from the fence, carefully pruning where needed and laying it down so it would not hinder the crew replacing the fence. After the fence was completed they installed the new trellises, and attached the jasmine. Our 30 year old hedge is back in place no worse for wear. Jean Fogg's willingness to work with us to coordinate around the fence replacement project ensured the project's success. We have worked with Jean Fogg Landscaping on several projects large small for over 15 years. Their willingness to work closely with us, their attention to detail and expertise in plants and trees have helped us turn an ordinary back yard into a lovely garden that we enjoy everyday. read more

I am not a client of Fogg Jean Landscaping, but I have high hopes to be one in the future. I'm writing this review because I live next door to a client and their yard is exquisite. Everything is artfully arranged and continually changing with the seasons. It is the best design in the entire neighborhood (Danville) and as soon as it's within our budget, I will be calling him. I'm surprised none of the pictures here or on his website really show how aesthetically astute he is. If you care about curb appeal or a pleasing, functional and inviting backyard, call these guys. If you have a yard that has been perpetually trimmed into flat tops, ball shapes or even topped trees, like ours has, Fogg Jean Landscaping will not let you down.
