He's great with communication, and his estimate was right on point. I had some drainage work done at my house which trashed my entire irrigation system, so I needed to have it replaced, both in the front and back yard. The McKay crew did a bang up job of it. They came in on time and on budget. They had the whole system laid out and running within about two days. Then Sherman spent some time with me to make sure I knew how to operate the controllers. In fact, they do more than irrigation, and I will likely have them come back and put in some new plants and do some other work in my backyard. I had Sherman come out to give me a quote on fixing my ageing / malfunctioning DIY Orbit system. He found a few things wrong with it (valve stuck in off position, etc) but ultimately we realized it was beyond repair due to its age. He didn't charge me for his time, but did give me a quote to install a professional system as well as expand coverage to the entire back yard. His quote was reasonable / competitive, and I was lucky to get quickly scheduled. He and his crew came out and in a couple days were able to install a brand new Hunter system with sprayers and multiple drip lines. Despite having to trench through my yard, when they were done it looked as good as new. They took special care around existing landscaping and did not damage anything during the installation process. After I posted my review, the owner got back to me and arranged to come give a quote. He had family issues and explained that he is usually very responsive. I contacted several local companies and obtained 3 quotes: - Company 1: $2900 to replace all 10 valves. This might not fix everything and then we might need to replace the electrical components ($1500 additional) - This company: $1500 for a new controller and installation. Recommended 1 type (with a cumbersome looking app). - Company 3: $200 (2-hour minimum site visit) to install new controller and can use any extra time to address other issues. We were able to research controllers and bought one we liked (~$200) that had great reviews and an amazing app. Ultimately, Sherman (the owner) was able to correctly diagnose the problem and I feel he would have done good work. He came with a helper so part of the higher cost is for 2 people to do the work. Also they do a lot of commercial work. He was also available sooner to do the work. Considering these 3 points, I think the estimate he gave is fair. read more

Ran into a problem with my sprinkler, as in I accidentally broke something. Sherman called back right away and asked me a few questions to make sure my irrigation wouldn't flood. We hired Sherman and Julio to install an entirely new irrigation system for us this fall after we realized our newish watering system was either over-watering all of our plants or not watering them enough. The system they installed is the Hunter Pro HC smart controller along with the Hunter Flow meter, so that we are able to see how much irrigation water we are using at any given time, and adjust accordingly. And they also installed a meter which provides leak detection. In addition to the new irrigation system, Julio and Sherman (and crew) installed a french drain along the bottom of our property, as we live on at the bottom of a hill and the plants at the bottom of our yard were drowning. Since McKay irrigation completed their work a few months ago, all the plants in our yard have been thriving. I would like to add that Sherman and Julio go above and beyond, their work is impeccable, they walk you through every new item and how it runs, and they are incredibly professional and kind. Additionally, Sherman is always available to help, answer questions, and/or update watering times remotely. The way they work with their team, have lunch together as a group and stay completely involved in every step of the process is also highly unusual and really stood out to me. We decided to install a new irrigation system in our home. McKay came to the rescue, with Julio, Santiago, and the crew and proposed a subsurface dripping irrigation system that resulted more effective and efficient than the sprinklers (worth every penny). Using the Hunter smart controller and the Hunter water meter, which allow you to track water usage, made a big difference. We also put new trees in the sidewalk strip, and McKay followed the recommendations of the City of Berkeley about irrigation (a bubbler for each tree). They have been very responsive about everything: timing, running lines, adjusting flow, teaching the app, making adjustments, etc. Highly recommended. A+, top notch, true professionals that truly take pride in their work. Our ancient buried system kept breaking every 3-4 months due to ground movement, and after our fourth run in a year with leak detectors and massive EBMUD overage charges, we had had enough. McKay was out to inspect and plan for a quote within 24h, and commenced work in a week. Next generation tech, auto-disconnect from the main, wifi, above ground lines run along the retaining walls to beat the soil movement, emanators, drips, and high-efficiency heads have literally dropped our usage by 80% or more. Team was super efficient, incredibly hard working, and very nice. It's basically hiring your own EBMUD crew with their own software and hydrologic engineers. Very helpful in the rare event there's an issue (issue wasn't their fault, construction related 6 mo after install), concierge-level irrigation support last minute on a Saturday morning bearing drills, multimeter, and replacement system just in case speaks it all. Remote monitoring at all times, and non-intrusively checking in if the wifi goes down for prolonged periods. Can't recommend this company enough, worth every penny. No regrets, would hire again in a heart beat. Don't hesitate, do the right thing and call them now. Your water bill, watershed, and peace of mind will be ever thankful. AMAZING!! Even amidst these crazy times, Mckay was amazing and was able to help us fix a sprinkler who had a mind of its own, and kept on while our system was off. Sherman and his partner Julio responded to my call for replacing a residential sprinkler system that had suddenly failed. What set Sherman apart initially was that out of 7 companies I called during the 4th of July week, McKay was the only one to respond at all. Even after the holiday week. While I had installed the original system myself years earlier, the type of systems available to at your local hardware store/Home Depot are disposable and most important, no longer compatible with the hardwired, conduit fed and code compliant infrastructure I had installed. Simply tearing up what was there in order to replace with lesser grade components made no sense from a cost/benefit standpoint. I needed a professional that understood what was needed to meet my requirements for irrigation without unnecessary labor or associated cost. Sherman and Julio replaced my failed system in 4 hours using commercial quality components while utilizing the existing electrical infrastructure built specifically for this purpose. They also did an excellent job in rewiring the circuit to a remote station fully concealing the UF wire. Lastly, they built extra capacity into the new system so I can easily add drip or other irrigation systems as our needs evolve. In all, McKay Irrigation Systems did an excellent job. After the El Cerrito City approved our six-foot fence to keep hungry deer from munching on our expensive shrubs, it was time to think about irrigation. Hand-watering and a manual sprinkler system is only fun for the first few minutes and rapidly turns into a reluctant walking meditation.
