Caution: this is a review for those that either understand, or wish to understand the unique brilliance of Yooper culture. A "pah-stee" is a Cornwall-ish institution. Like any country's meat pie of origin, e.g., knish, pierogi, spanakopita, empanadas, wanton, pot sticker.., well, you get the idea... When I ascend the latitude separating the lower parts from the UP, I make it a point to time my passage through Iron Mountain so as to stock up on Jean Kay's Pasties.

Jean Kay's Pasties is a little storefront type business that offers walk-in (and I believe drive in) sales of an regional delicacy called a "Pastie" Think a large Hot Pocket only that tastes awesome. It's stuffed with actual fresh ingredients... so it's nothing like a hot pocket (only in looks). Compared to some of the other Pastie Restaurants in Upper Michigan, this one might have a smaller menu, but the Pastie I had (Steak) was super flakey and really tasty. I guess if you make one or two flavors really well, you don't need multiple on your menu! The shop does not have any sit down capabilities, so it's take out only. Jean Kay's Pasties in my Top 3 for the UP (so far!)

1 lb. Flank steak and rutabaga pastie.

Pasties are hard to photograph but these were SO GOOD! The pastry crust on Jean Kay's is incredibly delicious. The staff was really friendly and helpful for these first time pastie eaters! They use flank steak instead of ground beef in the signature pastie. Two of us split and enjoyed the 1 lb. flank steak with rutabaga (similar taste and texture to potatoes!), a smaller bratwurst one, and a strawberry rhubarb dessert one. At only $15 it was a unique, delicious, and very affordable lunch for two!

Small bratwurst pasties. Bratwurst, cheese, and potatoes. YUM! I crave these.

So, ive always been a dobbers fan. Its right there on the main road and there is a drive through. You can also pick those things up and just eat them. Now that i write that, maybe its only the convenience of dobbers. Hmmmm. So Jean Kays is the best of the best. Their pasties are the best ive ever had. Im just gona say that right now. I stopped in cause of the now infamous article about how a few guys took a small plane to marquette to get these things cause they were so good. Yea, i said, we'll see. Wow. I would do the same now. These are bigger, fuller, and have better ingredients than dobbers. I had the bratwurst one. OMG... OMG! bratwurst, cheese, onions, and potatoes all wrapped up in a soft, flakey pastry. It was life changing. Im just said i got 1. I also got a mini hot caramel apple one. Yes, you read that right. It was so good i wanted to roll in it and eat my way out. I bought 2 par baked steak ones for home. Those were also delicious, but that bratwurst one, damn. They also had chicken, broccoli and chicken, and veggie. This place only makes so many a day. Quality is important, so when they run out, they close. Get there early or order a day ahead. You're welcome. Damn, i wish i had a plane now to go get another bratwurst one.

Great pasty but my last one was like chewing on leather. Those were some tough pieces of steak. Still one of my favorites.......

Had the pasty with rutabaga, very classic. Small place, food to go. Not the same owners as the Jean Kay's in Marquette.

    Sorry, we are not.

Planning to ship to my parents in GR. Can they be frozen to enjoy at a later date once they are received? Thanks!

I don't ship, but my customers that ship themselves always ship frozen in dry ice.

Do you ship out of state? I live in Oregon and really miss my pastieis

No I'm sorry but we do not ship

We've been on the road and sooo tired of road food. We drove a few miles from Niagara after reading…read morereviews on Yelp, and what a treat it was to find Spiros close by in Iron Mountain! We weren't very hungry, but even if we were, what we ordered would have filled us both. Each had a very hot bowl of French Onion Soup which was delicious. It was full- bodied, not overly salty, with a nice bread covered with very bubbly, browned cheese overall. We also split a Black and Blue Gorgonzola Cranberry salad in which the good-sized piece of steak was nicely charred, and tender, and the greens fresh and plentiful as was the cheese crumbles and bacon. What really made it delicious was the absolutely delicious balsamic vinaigrette (maybe the best I've ever had and that's saying a lot because I am a salad fanatic)! The waitress was very nice (though the other woman wasn't so friendly). The only thing that wasn't great the ambiance. The ceiling is so high and there was a table of four women who were so loud it was hard to have a conversation at our table of two, and no one else in the restaurant. The walls are very bare and the tables look like they were haphazardly arranged. But who cares much when the food is so good, and the prices exactly reasonable!.

Just phenomenal food! Best in all of the land, nothing nearby even compares. And Erin is the best.read more

The ambience to the restaurant was nice and it felt clean and updated inside. I can't recall the exact price of everything, but I do recall that everything was priced as I would expect. Definitely not overpriced and everything was in line with the average rate. All the food was great. The cheeseburger was great including the bun. Sometimes you don't do so well with those. Someone else got macaroni and cheese which was awesome. I actually was a little surprised that it tasted so good because that is an always so great and restaurants. The pizza got great reviews by people. And a few other males did well. The couscous meal was ok. Now for the people. I will acknowledge that finding help these days is very difficult post pandemic. There was a younger teenage girl working as the hostess. While she may be young, somebody really does need to train her on customer service. She initially told us that they were waiting for two table tops of 16 even though the two tables of 16 had already been seated. She told us that we would not be able to eat for an hour but we cannot get a table for another hour and a half. Obviously this doesn't make any sense. You have to have a table 1st and then you can eat. She told us it would take an hour and a half for the six of us to be seated even though there were plenty of tables open. The thing that makes this bad, is even if she was totally mistaken, and totally wrong, she was very rude the entire time. There was no smile, her tone of voice was pretty crabby, and she definitely did not make you feel like she was going to do anything to try to make it work for you. She seemed somewhat grouchy and irritated that you were coming in to eat. I would have no issue if she had said this and clearly been wrong, but her tone of voice and everything about her customer service was wrong. She did not appear friendly and definitely did not smile or look like she was trying to accommodate. She presented like a sulky teenagers. After giving a few solutions to the hostess of how we could use one of the several open tables available, she finally figured out how we could be seated immediately since there were so many tables open. We ended up being served by Thale, Who is a total gem. She saved the meal. The server was not only nice, polite, and friendly, she was humble and made you feel welcome. A far cry from the hostess a few feet away. The server was on top of her game, refilling drinks, and stayed very on top of our meal to make sure that we had everything we needed. She was charming and made the meal awesome. I would definitely come here again and I would hope that somebody in management considers talking to their hostess about how to provide better customer service. Other than that, everything else was great. The server should be acknowledged for her friendly and outgoing attitude. The food is great so nice job to the cooks on the line.

Let's start off by our server coming to our table without introducing herself or welcoming us. But…read moresimply just said "what do you want!". If that was any indication to what the rest of the meal was like we should've left then. So we came in for a Friday Fish Fry. We ordered two Walleye's and one Perch Fish Fry. And to say that our fish was burnt is understatement. Please see photos of the madness. We immediately asked for the entree's to be recooked. They brought out our fish a second time and at least they didn't look burnt but there is a reason. They were undercooked. Not completely raw but undercooked. At this point just don't serve any more Fish. You obviously can't prepare it correctly. The manager explained "that it looks dark because of the spices in the batter". Cause that's a reason why food looks and tastes burnt. We paid, left a tip and went to another restaurant in Iron Mountain to wash away the taste of what we just experienced. I know this resort is up for sale and all I can say is to the new owner willing to pay the $4million price tag. Please focus on this restaurant and kitchen experience immediately.
