In the hunt for a family piano, I sought out a tuner who could join me to assess a few pianos being sold online. He immediately informed me he could do that, but that he actually had a great piano of his own for sale that he recommended. He offered a very reasonable price and so I seriously considered. Over the next two days, he sent me video demo playing the piano, plus photos. I was fairly convinced so made the trip to his workshop in a storage facility a few blocks from home, took a listen and bought on the spot. He was great at offering a reasonably priced mover who was excellent as well. And Monday following the weekend, I had a new family piano. Jeff is definitely straight forward. He clearly knows his stuff. I would agree with others, he does seem a bit disorganized. So the photos/texts/video came hours after he promised they would. His workshop was clean and efficient, but finding a receipt to issue me from his car was haphazard. Overall, he really knows his stuff, but get the sense he is very old school and somewhat distracted. That said, if you can get him to look at your keys, trust the opinion. read more

A few days after Jeff tuned our piano we started hearing a buzzing noise with certain keys. The buzzing sound wasn't there before he tuned the keys and now he says there's no warranty on his work and downplayed the buzzing noise. We're very disappointed after reading a lot of good reviews on Yelp to find he cares very little about the quality of his work. read more

I found Jeff online through a google search. After reviewing his website, I contacted him to tune my baby grand piano. (I have moved 3 times in the past 4 years, and the piano has not been tuned in at least 5 years... way too long! and it was badly out of tune!) Jeff gave me all of the information on the phone, had references if needed, and his follow up on the morning of the tuning was very good. He did a GREAT job of tuning, I have a great ear, and I think this is probably the best piano tuning I have ever had!! It sounds like an all new piano!! I called him at 12:30 to make sure that everything was okay and he told me he had lost track of time and could be here in 45 minutes. He finally showed up about 2. this dude was a no-show. sounded like a nice guy on the phone. but seeing that this is the second recorded instance of a no-show, and giving him the benefit of the doubt that he simply forgot about the appointment, i would strongly advise this guy to get more organized i.e. start using google calendar instead of penciling it into some flyaway post-it note or piece of toilet paper. actually glad he didn't show up, as yelp led me to another tuner in the area, adam gerling, who did a fine job and charged me $40 less than jeff murphy quoted me. read more

Waiting and waiting.....Sunday, had an appointment with Jeff between 2:30-3:00. He said he would call when he was about 20 minutes away. It is 15 minutes past our appointment and I called him. He could not remember who I was, what my piano was, gave me some lame excuse about someone showing up unexpected, blah, blah, blah. I have no idea how he actually tunes a piano. All I know is that I made an appointment with him two weeks in advance for a Tuesday night because I had a client coming in on Saturday morning. I called him to confirm the appointment on Monday and all was fine. Tuesday night I'm waiting and waiting and finally call him and he says "oops, i'm out of town", that I should call him the next morning to reschedule when he has his calendar in front of him. I tell him thats fine, I just really need it by Saturday. So I call him Wednesday morning and he says "yeah, doesn't look like I'm going to be able to do it by Saturday". I'm sorry but if you mess up and double book yourself, you should make a POINT of making sure you fix it, even if it means working extended hours. I didn't want any sort of discount, I just wanted it DONE. Now trying to find a piano tuner who's available in the next two days is going to be a chore. NOT COOL read more

My father-in-law left a 1948 Gulbransen to us, which was in terrible shape at the time. I'm so glad we chose Jeff to do our total restoration. He met us at my father-in-law's place in Long Beach, on short notice, after hours. He took time to explain the piano's history and the restoration to us completely. He then went above and beyond to help us coordinate shipping to have it restored and then up to our home in Ventura County. The piano was delivered to us in less time that he originally estimated it might take, and is absolutely gorgeous! I never, ever thought the dusty old thing we first saw could look this amazing. It plays so nicely and the sound is perfect. My children have all taken their first lessons on this piano (which was what my father-in-law had in mind) and it was played beautifully in the background during the Memorial service we held for him several months after his passing. What a wonderful gift. When I need tuning, or anything else piano related Jeff is/was my go-to guy! He knows his profession, is very skilled and went far beyond our expectations. read more

Just had the piano tuned with Jeff and it has never sounded better.

When I called Jeff to have him to tune my new piano I just picked up off Craigslist, I didn't realize that he was the tuner my family used while growing up! Originally I had another tuner come check the piano out, but he said the strings would probably break if he did the job because they are quite old and were almost 2 semitones flat. Jeff was able to lubricate the strings and tune the piano. He let me know that he would have to charge $40 extra because the job was going to take longer than normal and the strings would have to be tuned sharp to get them to settle into pitch. I agreed and I'm happy I did because the piano now sounds great and there are no broken strings! To top it off, Jeff is a friendly and knowledgeable guy who is clearly passionate about his job. read more

We were able to book a last minute appointment with Jeff in December. He showed up right on time and spent two hours working very diligently on our old birdcage piano. He fixed a ton of stuff that had come loose with age and instructed us on how to move it from one side of the room to another. Not only was Jeff kind and hard working, he was very willing to share his knowledge of the instrument. Once everything was done, he played a couple of beautiful pieces that he has composed over the years. I can't say enough good things about Jeff. One week before christmas I received a free piano. The piano was in a complete state of disrepair. I called and shared photos with many technicians to see what it would take to get the piano up to speed. After these conversations, I was completely demoralized because it seemed it would be too much to spend on an older piano. Then Jeff returned my call and offered to drive over to get a better look at it. Sure enough, he agreed to resurrect the piano for a fraction of the other estimates. In fact, he was able to complete the work (fixing many stuck keys in the process) and the piano was ready for a holiday party jam session a few days later. As a bonus, I really enjoyed chatting with Jeff while he was doing the repairs. He taught me a great deal about my new piano and it was obvious that he is passionate about his work, and music in general. I made an appointment with Jeff 2 weeks in advance, and he told me the only time he has available was on a Friday evening at 6:30PM. I agreed. Then Jeff called that Friday afternoon and claimed he couldn't make it until a little bit past 7PM. About 2 hours before the scheduled time, he called again and said he couldn't make it until about 7:30PM. I was a bit annoyed. Well, with 2 revised appointments, he still didn't show up at my door until 8:30PM, a full 2 hours past original schedule!!! By the time Jeff show up, he just keep on yapping about the tequila he had while he was tuning so-and-so's piano. He kept on yapping for a full hour before he finally started to tune my piano. And then he kept on dragging his feet in doing the work. Asking for coffee, tea, sugar, what not etc. To be fair, I first offered the water to him, but I just didn't realized that he can be so demanding. By the time he finished tuning my piano, he just grabbed the tea I served him and sat on sofa and with the look that he has no intention of leaving, which really, really annoyed the heck out of me. Who wants to spend the Friday evening with an unfamiliar piano tuner? He started to probe on my family and personal life and acted like he is making himself comfortable in my living room! In the end, I have to "kindly" ask him to leave. And it was already past 11pm!!!!! I had to pay him about $65 extra because he claimed I live out of his area. Moreover, because I asked him to adjust the piano keys, he charged about $32 extra. The total tuning and key adjustment for an old upright piano came out to be around $200. Perhaps my piano required more work than normal, so I have no clue whether or not this price is fair. What really made me angry, is after I have to put up with him, 2 keys on my piano are still sticky, and 2 other keys at the low scale are still out of tune. Like, I have to carve out my entire Friday evening to put up with this guy and waste almost $200 and my piano is still not tuned!!! I thought about it for almost a month whether or not to write this post, and then when I was practicing Chopin today and keys are sticky and out of tune, I realized that I need to have another piano tuning ASAP!!! I feel like a chump for wasted both time and money to have Jeff tune my piano. If you have nothing better to do with your life, call Jeff. But don't expect to get your piano tuned properly, esp. if you are a classical musician. read more

Jeff is AWESOME!!!! We have an antique Story and Clark baby grand that my nephew spilled water across the keyboard on about 15 years ago. The ivory keys were so warped they couldn't move and some of them were bending in an upward direction. We had always planned to fix the piano we just never got around to it so it has set that way for over 15 years. We had Jeff come and look at it. For an extremely reasonable price he re-worked the keyboard and tuned the piano. He gave us a small concert and brought the music back into our house.
