Not a bad location. If I don't renew my tags online, I will typically visit one of the suburban…read morelocations to avoid any crowds, and downtown. I had to visit this location twice over the winter. First visit: To have something corrected on our marriage license since the Middletown location made yet another mistake(the lady out there made a half-dozen mistakes on our license, five of which we caught when we were there). This was a simple in-out. The lady told us we could've waited until we filed it to have them correct(white it out)/to save us a trip, but I didn't want to wait(a-n-x-i-e-t-y about such things). Second visit: A return to drop off and file the marriage. Again.. a simple in-out during a snowy time in the city. We went ahead and paid for 2 certified copies. Both times were great. The employees were nice, helpful, and talkative(without doing too much). Parking seems to be easier downtown now... they have signs posted around for street parking so you can text a number and pay/reload your time. I like that. Every city should implement it. The building is also an old courthouse, so it has that historical flair. Good visit. If I ever need to go in for tag renewal, I wouldn't hesitate to use the downtown branch again.

I waited half of my time outside the building. Someone had brought a little fold-up chair with them and that was genius. I was very cold and the wind had no mercy. Glad I had a coat. Arrive before opening if you're walking in. I got there at 8, the parking lot was full, and the line was halfway around the building already. Be sure you've got all your correct documents. You don't want to wait at least an hour to get in, and then have to leave (or scramble to get the correct hard copies as I heard some folks doing in the lobby). To get a RealID, the process is this. They direct you first to a QR code to sign in and get a virtual place in line. Then they check to be sure you have the right documents. You're allowed to sit down after this. Next you have to take the vision test, which is very quick, and then when your phone tells you you're up next, they direct you to a little maze of cubicles to get your photo and other details, pay the fee, and voila! You're done. Everyone I came into contact with was professional and kind, and moved things along as fast as they could. If I had to do it again, I'd try to get an appointment and skip that 50 minutes of shivering outside. But honestly it was much better than I expected.

My experience with the BMV has always been positive. So, it really surprises me when I read some of the negative reviews. The employees have been very friendly, explained any relevant information in a clear and concise manner, and provided all necessary information (when items were missing, etc.) to quickly close gaps on what I needed to get accomplished. They have always been incredibly patient and often offer smiles. Some visits have been busier with customers than others. Regardless how busy they've been, it's always been obvious that the employees work diligently and as quickly as possible to meet the customers' needs and to move onto the next. The visits and wait times have never been excessively long. They provide 5 stations to take exams. The main waiting area has plenty of seating. There are two places where photos are taken - maybe one for driver's license and the other for state ids. There are approximately 6-7 employees to help with all the BMV needs. The parking is not bad. The parking lot isn't huge, but I believe is adequately sized for them. It sort of sits on a hill, so it can be a little awkward maneuvering in / out of spaces.
