There's not enough stars to properly rate Dr. Starr and his practice! He has been my dentist for years and opened up his practice on his day off this week to do a very complicated emergency procedure on teenage son. He went way above and beyond to help him. He was calm and put my son at ease during the procedure. He has always been caring and professional and he is wonderful with adults, moms, teens everyone in the family. He and his team are excellent and my family and I are personally very grateful for his knowledge and dental care. Highly recommend. read more

My first dentist as a child was a sadist and, even worse, a bad dentist. As I entered my teen years and started to realize that my parents weren't always right, I forced a change to someone who was a marvelous dentist. He was responsible for my teeth still being repairable when I moved to California at age 25 (56 years ago) and Jim Starr, Jeff's father, and Ryan's grandfather, the second in the magnificent and seemly unending Starr dentistry dynasty. Eventually, Jim retired after making sure Jeff knew what he was doing, and now Jeff is making sure Ryan knows the ropes of both dentistry and running an office. At this point, I hope I live long enough to see Ryan in the saddle and Jeff happily in retirement. I was 15 minutes late because I had misread my appointment time. The office staff was kind enough to accommodate me for my teeth cleaning. I had mentioned to Irene, the hygienist, that I was post pneumonia by a month. She chose to do my cleaning without use of the water spray and as she said, different technique but same results. I had X-rays. Dr. Ryan Starr, did the final check up and all went well. He is as kind and gentle and capable as his father. read more

Great communicators. Dr. Jeff always takes the time to review treatment options and makes suggestions. Even the most complicated procedure gets "Oh, we can fix that". The office has good relations with all the local specialists - orthodontists and periodontists. The best recommendation is that they are highly regarded by other professionals in the community. I have a really high bar when it comes to dentists, and I've been seen by dental faculty at UCSF, Harvard, and Georgetown (not always in the student clinic, usually in their private practices). Dr Starr knows his stuff, and can explain it well and concisely if you're interested (I was when he was doing a filling for me). I also have a healthy fear of dentists. (I have great dental insurance, but insurance only covers so much, so hence the fear.) I recently went in to get a crown recemented and Dr Starr let me choose to not have the crown re-done (usually $500-$1k with insurance, depending) and just cleaned it off and recemented it because he thought it could last a few more years. So if you're looking for a conservative dentist who will let you get away with a less expensive course of treatment, he's your guy. I'm holding off the last star until he does a crown for me and I see the quality of his lab work... read more

Jeff is a wonderful guy and a great dentist. Everyone on his staff is terrific. My husband had been seeing another not-so-great dentist, who overlooked a root canal problem. One day, my husband woke up in pain. I called Dr. Starr's office and Dawn (office manager) said, "Bring him over at 12:30." My husband wasn't even a patient at the time -- but he is now! By far the best dentist I have ever had: fast, efficient, friendly, accurate, ethical, and his work is top notch. I lived in the Bay Area for almost 20 years, from Mountain View to San Francisco to Half Moon Bay to Livermore. Once, I made the mistake of trying out a different dentist who was closer, and that was it: from then on, I and my whole family made the commute to visit Dr. Starr twice a year. We moved to San Diego five years ago, and have still never found anyone as good. I have been going to him (and previously his father) since I was about 5. I would not even consider changing dentists. I have lived in several other parts of the world and still made sure I got back here when I needed dental work. He has a very friendly office and is very accomodating when you have an emergency. I have a real phobia of dentists. I'll make an appointment and cancel about three times before eventually going in. It has gotten to the point where I just haven't gone to a dentist (sadist, as I like to call them) in over five years. Nothing hurts, everything works, so I figured I'm fine. I have a big trip coming up so it got to the point where I was like, well, I might as well just go see someone to make sure everything will be fine for my trip. My coworker told me all about Dr. Starr and how great he is. I didn't even cancel, so that says something. I went in and was immediately greeted by his very friendly staff. A lovely woman came in to do my dental x-rays and that went very smoothly. She calmed me down, told me what to expect and was awesome. Then, Dr. Starr came in and what I really liked is he didn't just jump right in to examining me. He asked me questions. He got to know me. He was such a genuinely nice man that I felt very comfortable during the exam. He told me every thing he was doing and in the end he said we'll be seeing each other on a casual basis because nothing was wrong. :) Before leaving I set up a cleaning appointment and that was that. Very gentle, very calming and I look forward to future visits. Dr. Starr and his office is highly recommended. read more

I just had a lot of dental work done today. I am a chicken when it comes to going to the dentist and hate the sound of drills, getting poked, prodded with those little sharp hook tools, you name it. Today I had to get two cavities filled and some other unpleasant sounding dental work. I immediately told Dr. Starr I was really worried because of my extreme teeth sensitivity. He put me at ease and told me there would be no issues getting some nitrous oxide per my request and doing extra anesthesia through the injections. I was fearing THE WORST today and was really quite terrified. Who likes getting their teeth drilled as an adult? Not me. I got the laughing gas administered and we went through a little procedure of if I feel anything during the treatments to raise my left hand which means "ouch, I can feel this!" Dr. Starr encouraged me to breathe deep and relax. I also had my iphone music playing which helped chill me out. I immediately felt relaxed and a OK. He did a GREAT job with the injections. The last memory I have of getting an injection into the gum was terrible. It stung so bad. Today was very different. He first used a swab of some sort of numbing gel and then did the injections. I was totally fine. I didn't feel a thing except my mouth getting VERY numb. As the laughing gas was working I told him "I feel like I had a stroke" because of the effect of the anesthesia doing its magic. He laughed and continued the procedures. About 45 minutes in of drilling and other 'lovely things' I was trying to not fixate on, I will share I had to ask to stop the nitrous oxide as it was working a little "too much." I was floating and spinning and it made me feel too "out of control" but they stopped it and I was fine. Still no worries about any of my treatments after the gas ceased. Dr. Starr kept checking in to ask if I was OK. He made me feel really safe and taken care of today, for that, thank you Dr. Starr. Hopefully I don't have to come back for another nasty treatment and can just get my routine cleanings done. lol. read more

I have horrible, rotten teeth. Every time I went to my previous dentist I could see him planning to finance his next vacation around my new dental problems. I switched to Dr. Starr about six years ago and he has been fantastic. He's gentle and reasonable, well read and researched and always fills me in on my options. I've been to many, many dentists over the years, and Dr. Starr has been the best. He also works on my kids (12,10 and 8) and they love him - no tears, no issues. Dr. Starr (and previously, his father) have been my family's dentist for about 25 years. I don't even live in the Bay Area anymore, but I still schedule my cleanings and procedures so that I can see him whenever I am home. He does fabulous work, is very sensitive to jittery patients, and the office is great with kids (I'm not entirely sure how old I was when I stopped raiding the toy chest in his office...but I do remember there was always good stuff in there). His staff, hygienists, and other personnel are also all excellent, and some have been with the office for decades. read more

I can't vouch for his work with serious dental issues because my teeth have been fine so far, but I can say that for the 10 years I've been seeing Dr. Starr and his staff for general cleaning and advice, I've never been displeased. He and his staff care about what they do (one assistant is a bit gruff, but it's just her style). When my son was young, he sucked his thumb, and in one visit Dr. Starr talked him into stopping! (Of course, my son is a bit of a people pleaser). When orthodonics came into the picture, he recommended a great colleague. He's a five star dentist. read more

His skill is superb but it's the whole package that makes me a happy patient, from his office ambience to his support staff, and most importantly, to the kind of man he is. I am not the easiest patient (dentalphobic!!!!!!!) and I can say that Dr. Jeff is patient, calm, and gentle as he works. I appreciate his skill and manner. We actually travel out from Massachusetts every summer to see Dr. Starr. What I really like about him is that he explains exactly what he is doing. When he gives a recommendation, he clearly supports it with evidence, and then leaves the decision of whether to go forward or what to do up to the patient. read more

DON'T GO TO THIS DENTIST!!!! My experience with Dr. Starr was horrific! The only procedure he ever performed on me was in 2008 to fix a chip on my front upper tooth. In the process of doing so, he made the mistake of putting too much bonding agent on the back of my tooth. And while taking it off, he not only took off the bonding agent but most of the enamel on the back of the tooth, as well. As a result, the dentin and many of the nerves in the tooth are exposed and I have a great deal of pain and sensitivity to hot and cold. In fact, I have pain and sensitivity in the tooth to the point that I may need a root canal! Needless to say, I changed dentists and I now have to use expensive toothpastes (Sensodyne and Prevident for sensitivity) and get sealants on the back of the tooth to avoid the root canal. Even with the expensive toothpastes and sealants, I still may need the root canal! Dr. Starr took no responsibility for this and refused to cover any of the costs needed to deal with the damage he caused to my tooth by his mistakes. As a consequence, I am taking him to small claims court about this! I had a healthy front upper tooth with a small chip on it and Dr. Starr's terrible treatment turned it into an unhealthy tooth that may need a root canal! DON'T GO TO THIS DENTIST!!!! read more
