I came in to get my son some fishing gear as a gift. He used to fish a lot and hasn't fished in Austin but keeps talking about it. Michael was very helpful. He really understands the rivers and lakes and knows what kinds of lures to use, how to use them, times of day and changes of seasons. It wan't a lecture and was very interesting. Honestly had a really good experience with one of the guys. However there's another fella that just ruins this place. He hates doing anything and asking questions might just catch you an attitude. They do mark up a bit but I didn't mind paying because I liked one of the guys. Last time I went I unfortunately got that grumpy person and ruined the entire place for me. Get the same products cheaper elsewhere. Decent selection but again marked up a bit too much in my opinion. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to pick up fishing, and initially were about to buy some cheap hooks and supplies from Walmart, when we decided that we should stop by this shop instead. Boy, am I glad we decided to shop here! We explained to the gentlemen at the front desk that we were absolutely clueless about fishing, and Albert (I believe his name was) was kind enough to help us through the entire process, from selecting an affordable pole, to showing us which tackle to use and even took the time to set up our rods. Both he and his brother are great people, and we both learned so much from them on fishing in the time we were there. Couldn't recommend this place more than enough! Getting ignored completely after shopping around and picking up some supplies. Waited at the counter for 5 plus minutes. I guess I wasn't the right color... I left my stuff at the counter... won't ever go back. Ended up stopping by Cabela's which they had wonderful service with much more better supplies to offer. Do not recommend. They must be hurting for business/money. Dropped off two Penn Battle II 3000 reels. One worked just fine but wanted a clean up ($45 which I agreed to) and got it back; feels the exact same. The other would not turn (internally had some saltwater damage). Said about 2 weeks. Said he would call if parts needed because I did NOT want to pay too much when the reel brand new (exact same) is only $100 (in stock at Walmart, Amazon, and the Penn website!). I was very clear on this and he agreed before I left my reels. After two weeks, I kept calling to see what's going on. He ordered a part without my consent because he thought it was no big deal, only an extra $15 (would now be $60). Not happy, but I said OK. It took almost 4 weeks to be ready because he ordered the wrong part and didn't tell me until I had to call him and ask what is taking so long. Finally the reel is done but it will be $85 instead of $60! He added some more parts in it and didn't call to ask, again! He said "I knew you wanted it really bad so I added them". No sir, I kept calling because you wouldn't and it was well past two weeks. Literally a new reel is $100 for exact same as I told him again, he said "no they aren't, I sell them right here for $185!!" Wow. Unbelievable markup!! After continually to remind him he never called for part permission, he finally gave me a $15 discount. He should have charged me a max of $60 as we agreed to. As simple as that. I was very clear in my instructions on calling me for any parts because I would rather buy new for $100 than pay over $60. It shouldn't take customers to remind the employee/owner what they agreed to do and didn't follow through with. Wasn't my fault he ordered the wrong part and delayed fixing by 2 weeks, or my fault he didn't call me before ordering a part, or my fault he added more parts again without calling. Then couldn't even apologize and just would proceed to tell me the reel is $185 and it's my fault for not taking care of the reel. SMH. Absolutely awful and lack of professionalism. read more

I am new in town, and after my move I realized my rod ive had since I was 17 (im 34 by the way), was damaged during the move. I have a 2-piece quantum spinning rod and reel, and the rod has been getting beat up lately. The tip eyelet got bent out of shape but it wasn't anything some pliers couldnt fix. Then my cork handle cracked, put some gorilla glue - good as NEW. But then the move broke my lower half large eyelet... It was cracked in half and it was sharp and jagged and cutting my line and myself. I cut it with my leatherman and tried to file it down as far as I could. Well that wasnt good enough, i was getting really effed up casts, and it was looking plain ol' ugly... So I tried searching some local places in ATX that would fix my rod... I bumped into JENSON'S after some web searches, and it looked very mom & pop - so I said, let me swing by. Let me tell you... This place was AWESOME!!! They were willing to fix my rod on the spot RUSH just in time for my labor day fishing trip, however I felt I didnt want to rush these craftsmen... so let them do what they do best in the timely manner they are used to. For about $20+ they repaired my rod in 3 days, they made my rod look like nothing ever happened to it. They put a new large eyelet, new epoxy, and replicated the color scheme and design in the area they fixed - it looked BRAND NEW. I can't express to you the big cheesy smile I had on my face - I felt like that 17 year old kid again, and the first time I purchased the rod and reel combo. These guys are super friendly, make you feel like you are one of the guys, and are just genuine good people. The place is a bevy of just great products, and tons of fresh bait too. You need some products, or amazing service and dont want to go to a big box store where you feel like a dollar sign - then head on over to JENSON'S! This place is too awesome to overlook!!! read more

Old school family run business, the people who work here are friendly and treat you like you're part of their family. There aren't many business' like this left and I'd rather support a small business than a giant one who doesn't really need my business. you want experts, you want local, you want established (est 1931 baby!), you want down to earth/river folks, you don't want a place that sells a few rows of fishing then hunting then running then with little or no knowledgeable service....you want a legit FISHING place with helpful folks that will take time to brainstorm about making something, go here. you'll find "Pop" & his crazy little dog (Pop is the 99 yr old owner who opened the place in 1931 then moved it to its current location in 1951 with a wall full of lures HE designed, oh yeah, he's also a retired UT professor with a doctorate in nuclear physics...pretty humbling) along with competent & helpful manager Joe and Matt- both who are great at building enthusiasm for the next catch and for taking time to talk with you. so pleased someone let me in on a sweet secret fishing spot. word on the creek is that their live bait is also good. Fantastic fishing store. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. They seem to buy a lot of their hooks and tackle in bulk and then individually bag them, making the prices much better than sporting goods stores. They keep big jars of swivels and sinkers behind the register, which made me feel like a big kid in a fishing candy store. I'll definitely be back in the future. read more

Unbelieveable! HorribIe experience! I went into this shop at lunch time on Friday to get the tip of my rod replaced. They said I could come back in a bit. When I came back, all of the folks that had been there before were gone, and the one man present had no idea what I was talking about. Then I saw my pole, and when the guy handed it to me, not only was it not fixed, they HAD BROKEN IT!!!! Then he told me that they could not put a new tip on, because the pole was broken. What kind of a rod/reel repair shop cannot make a simple rod-tip-replacement repair without breaking the pole?!?!?! The there was the complete lack of concern about my property. I cannot even believe that I was treated this way. No Apology. No offer to make it right. He actually told me I could buy a repair kit at Academy and fix it myself. I will NEVER consider doing business with these people again. read more

do not take your equipment here to get CLEANED OR FIXED. James the repair guy is full of it. You know something is up when you go to get your reel CLEANED and his first statement is "How much do you wanna spend". I have a Shimano reel that was just discontinued a couple months ago, wanted it cleaned, and I got back a bag full of parts because all the sudden i had a hard plastic piece off my housing that "broke". James claimed he couldn't get the part because it was discontinued, and he has a connection at Shimano, some guy named "Chris". So now I got a bag full of parts, which i hope to god are all there. I called Shimano and the customer service guy says they DO have the part, and they keep all parts stocked for discontinued models for up to 5 years. When I call James back to ask him why he couldn't get the part he tells me he must of had a communication issue with the parts supplier, and he called two different ones and got the same story. If I can get the part within a one minute call, why can't a "Shimano loving repair guy" get it. Something is up with this dude..oh yeah, on the phone after one minute of asking whats up with his operation he told me he had to get off the phone, "right this minute" . Real good customer service to keep someone coming back , tell them you can't talk anymore after ONE MINUTE. James I hope you read this. IF you have taken your reel there and its a Shimano that has been discontinued within the last five years, AND james says he can't get the part, YOU CAN GET IT AND SHIMANO STOCKS IT. Whats funny is when I first was handed my "bag of parts" he handed me the wrong bag , a shimano symmetre instead of a Saros. He told me the same type of story that the part was discontinued. Well, that symmetre was recently discontinued as well, and Shimano will have those parts stocked. It sound like this guy is running some kind of racket giving people this same story of discontinued parts , when Shimano has them in stock. I hope a few people that have heard this same type of story read this. Shame on you James, for bad business. read more

I wouldn't recommend any repairs to equipment here. I brought in some spinning reels to be inspected, cleaned, and repaired. They charge more than anyone else to do these repairs, but I thought that meant you got really good service. I returned a few days later to pick up the reels. The guy said that he was only charging $35.00 per reel for labor because none of the reels needed any parts. I should have inspected each one before I left but I didn't. When I got home I started to rig each reel out again with line. One of the reels was still hard to spin and the bail on the reel wouldn't close when the reel was operated.. I called the gentlemen I dealt with and explained the issue. He said it was due to the housing being worn. He then said it would cost me another $35.00 in labor to replace the housing plus $50.00 for the housing. I told him that if he would have inspected the reel for damages and tested the reel he would have know there was an issue. He could have called me and ask if I wanted to have the new part installed. I thought that was what I was paying for. Why should I have to pay labor again for something that should have been fixed the first time? The part needed is only $24.00 and they were going to charge me $50.00. The guys response was that the repairs would have been more than the reel is worth. Yea, it would be if I was charged twice for labor and the parts. If this is the case, then the guy should have not charged $35.00 for repairs when nothing was repaired. He did clean the reel, so I have a clean reel that doesn't operate like it should. He said that I should just use the reel as is and close the bail manually.They do have a lot of stuff in the building to look at, but most of the tackle is a little over priced. If this was an oversight by not noticing the worn part, I would understand. However, I would expect that the guy would fix the reel without charging me labor again. I would have brought him the part!!! Oh well lesson learned. read more
