I am no expert of Jamaican food but I do enjoy this place a lot. Tiny lil takeout place at Eglinton and Confederation, and you can order online without having to use Uber Eats or any 3rd party platform. I went for the ackee & saltfish dinner with dumplings, Rice&Peas with Callaloo, and a large serving of chicken soup (soup of the day). Overall the food was enjoyable, a tad oily on the rice&peas and the ackee&saltfish portion, but the food was tasty and quite enjoyable (though I lowkey wished it was spicier). I really like the dumplings, it reminds me of the donut sticks you'd get when eating congee, except these dumplings are dense and delicious. I usually visit Baklava King a few shops down from Jerk BBQ Haven in the same plaza. During my last visit I picked up one of their lunch lunch specials. I went for my usual go-to Jamaican food which is jerk chicken, rice and coleslaw. The serving was pretty good for a lunch portion and the price was around $7-8. The Food: Meh. Not good, not bad. The chicken was flavourful but the rice (usually my favourite part) was wayyyy too dry. Even with the oxtail gravy the rice was not enjoyable. My favourite was the coleslaw. I've never had coleslaw with raisins in it but it was delicious! Would I return? Probably not. Well, maybe for the coleslaw. DELICIOUS JERK and more! This is a local joint next to our nail and hair salon and we frequently visit. Very delicious food and tons of options. Food: our favourites are the jerk chicken which we order as a meal but occasionally order half of a chicken (all dark meat) with coleslaw on the side if we're looking for something lighter. If they have it, you've gotta add plantains to your order! Service: definitely designed for take out vs dine in service. I find the service VERY SLOW! I just went to BBQ Haven restaurant to get some curry goat for my daughter's dinner and I decided to get 1/2 lb of jerk pork for myself and they had the nerve to charge me $24 for this. I guess I was the stupid one for paying it. I got 8 pieces of goat and more fat than pork. Even though this is the nearest West Indian restaurant to me I'll never go here again. The rice and beans slathered in Oxtail Curry is absolutely divine. Jerk chicken is tasty. I love the coleslaw too. The real prize is the Jamaican Beef Patty. I ordered the lunch special with two patties. I instantly regretted gifting my second beef patty. I must highlight the patty is NOT frozen and delicious. Flavour also seeped into the meat which is great. The meat is juicy. It wasn't too dry. The rice and peas was a lot! On the dry side. I should have asked for more oxtail gravy on it haha. Ordered from here one night last week. We ordered two large jerk chicken, one small jerk pork and two large oxtail. We recieved all the same small portion size and two jerk pork instead ine of them being chicken. The pork was so fatty and almost inedible. The chicken was dry and not meaty at all. The oxtail was almost $20 with tax and was still a small (repeating myself because it's unbelievable, Carribean spots usually give you more than you can eat). Wouldn't go back. You're not going to slow cook a couple pieces of meat at home. It's not worth your time. Maybe you'll fast fry it but then it won't melt in your mouth. So why not let the nice lady at JBH cook a big batch and buy only what satisfies your hunger? Goat curry, rice&beans with coleslaw. Excellent meal and at a fair price. I have been here three times now. The first time left a great impression. I found the chicken to be perfect with the oxtail gravy on top. (The lady asked which sauce I prefer including chicken stew sauce). The rice and peas were okay just dry and some beans were over ripe but I ate it all regardless. The coleslaw was amazing- wish they gave more. I love how there's cranberries in it. The second time I came I got the same thing but this time it was lacking sauce and the rice just didn't taste as good. Even the chicken was ok but not as good at last time. Then my third experience was amazing again. I had fried chicken this time and it was soooooo good!!!! And the rice and beans were back to normal. I tried the plantain and they were perfect. Flavours - delicious! well seasoned and spiced and without being overly hot. The jerk chicken is moist and well spiced with a nice grill to it. The ackee and saltfish was tender and flavourful.
