This Facility is still part of the ASPCA and they are out for all the Senior Citizen's Money. They are the worst Animal Shelter as far as Adopting out Pets that I have been following this Facility for over 20 Years. I have went twice to Adopt a Dog there within a 10 year span. And all they care about is their Salaries and convincing Seniors and any other Fool to Donate all their Money to them after they Die. The Toms River Animal Facility has been Wonderful Staff and they are the best Pet Adoption Agency around I had to have a Dog from there recently put down one of my Dogs from there that We have had for 15 Years old on Friday. Since my Dog passed on Friday I am looking for my Male Dog Pit mix to have a new Female companion. I went with my best friend and her wife when they were looking for a cat and dog to fill the void left by the passing of their 2 elderly pets. They passed within a month of each other. The facility was very clean and the lady that assisted us seemed to know quite a bit about each individual animal. I was watching the cats just pointing out different ones to my bestie and I spied one that seemed to be watching me and meowing. But I wasn't the one adopting. When they picked them up the next day and brought them home, the cat I had been looking at and a beautiful smoke and white long-haired girl who had been born and raised in the shelter were just peering out of their carriers. Before I could even get out "Oh! They're so cute!" The tuxedo girl ran right up to me and clearly meowed out "Mamaaaa!" My best friend laughed and said, "I knew it!" And now, if I close my bedroom door, she will sit out there meowing "Mamaaaaaaa!" until I let her in. I am disabled and have mental health issues. Having the tuxedo cat now named (the magickal) Miss Magoo has been so beneficial. She knows when I need my soft purr monster in my lap or nearby. She spends most of her time in my bedroom. If I'm sick, she watches over me. If my mental health issues are destabilizing, she will roll around on the floor making silly squeaking kitten-like mews as she's purring. She knows it makes me laugh and calms me so I can ground myself. Her only issue is that she developed a mental disorder called Pica that makes her want to eat non-food items. It's not her fault. Like my own mental health issues, it's hereditary. It just means we're more careful where we leave plastic bags and make sure candy wrappers and other small temptations get to the garbage immediately. The cat my best friend chose transformed from an aloof and nervous animal which mostly hid under out beds to a sweet girl who loves to be petted and treated like the queen she thinks she is. All of the members of our household have disabilities or health issues. Having these two beautiful and loving girls in our home has enriched our lives in ways it's difficult to articulate. We will care for and love these girls until they're ready to pass on to their next adventure. And, when the time is right, we'll most likely head back to the Jersey Shore shelter to find new friends to fill the voids left by well-loved pets. For those returning animals to them: For cats and dogs who have been in a shelter for a while or maybe just dumped after being in a home, shelter life can be overwhelming, perhaps even terrifying. The noise level alone can give an emotionally shut down dog PTSD. A home environment is almost a shock to them. It took the long-haired aloof cat almost two years to come out of her shell. Just like kids in the foster care system, you have to give them time to adjust and let them settle in on their own schedule. Patience and love are the keys. read more

We adopted Loki from the Jersey Shore Animal center. He was treated there very well by all the staff. To this day, the staff enjoys when he visits. This place is a ridiculous! I seriously think they just want to let all their animals die at this shelter instead of being adopted! They denied my application because I was too far away and you can forget about it if you don't take your cats for their annual wellness. The first time I called, I surely thought I was gonna have a chance to adopt; the lady I talk to was nice and willing to work with me. But I had to call back later for them to get more information from a previous vet, and whom ever I got on the phone was not cooperative. She totally was different! Told me I live too far away and then, since my old cats didn't get checked up annually to get their rabies shots and everything else... that my application was denied! I seriously think you have to be 100% Saint to get a cat or a dog here. Look somewhere else. They are going to let all their animals die in that shelter with all their strict policies. I clearly think there is some scheme going on with this shelter. If they get rid of all the animals then they won't get funding from businesses, the government or whatever it is. I have rescued dogs for over twenty years and was hoping to rescue one from this facility. The manager of the facility was rude, condescending and totally unprofessional. I am very disappointed in this "animal center" that supposedly cares about animals well being. I scheduled surgeries for my cats in May, their surgery date was May 26th. I rescheduled for June 11th because they went into heat, I have spoken with many legit vets (not low cost spay programs) and they have all advised me that I do not spay while my kitties are in heat. Their uterus is so swollen that it becomes much more dangerous. May 26th was approaching and both of my girls were in heat, I called to reschedule for my own peace of mind and the girl who I spoke on the phone with was very rude and condescending. She said it was "entirely safe to do the spay while in heat". I said "Although it might go well, I would like more peace of mind and would like it done when they are out of heat." I rescheduled for June 11th, and unfortunately one of my cats has gone into heat again. I called and left a message that I would only be getting one of my cats spayed, due to one having gone into heat. They called me back to inform me that "Due to it being my fourth reschedule, they will not be performing only one surgery" - pause. I rescheduled ONCE, I had an initial date of May 26th, and a reschedule date of June 11th. ONE TO FOUR, that is a massive leap... I told them that although I wanted to bring only one of my cats on the 11th, I did not want to bother them with rescheduling for the other (due to the fact that they told me they were booked up for quite some time anyway). They told me I could either bring in both cats, or no cats. AKA completely disregarding my safety concern for my little girl. When I reassured them that I had no intention of rescheduling the other surgery with them, I simply wanted to cancel it due to heat (and bring only my other cat in) They said no we will not be doing that surgery. These women could not be worse, they are incredibly rude, have no idea how to deal with people, and clearly don't give much of a damn about my cats. I rescheduled one time, not four. Incredibly disgusted with this animal center, I recommend going somewhere else. Shame on Jersey Shore Animal Center. read more

I have had dogs my entire adult life (now in my 60's). Large dogs. The only shelter that ever denied my adoption request was, you got it, Jersey Shore. Their reason (owned my own home, someone home 24-7, fenced yard) was that I didn't look comfortable while walking the dog on a leash. I wasn't since the dog was not accustomed to a leash. With the incredible amount of advertising for people to come into shelters to adopt and donate, the Jersey Shore Animal Center turned us off from adopting a pet. Denied for an animal that has been hanging out in the shelter for over a month and a half. It is not like we do not live in a very nice development with a huge park in the back to walk it. So what if we never had a dog before. That is the the whole point of going to shelter is to get an animal. It is easier to get approved for an AMEX black card than walking out of this place with a dog. I would not even think if considering adopting from a shelter anymore. There are plenty of younger puppies to be purchased and approved for elsewhere. read more

Asked them how they determine that a dog isn't okay with cats. Apparently they put them in a room for a few minutes and if the dog reacts they label him/her NO CATS. Small wonder why they're full-up on dogs and every single one is labeled NO CATS. I get being careful, even being strict, but when you're deciding that every single dog in the building is a cat-murderer, maybe you're being a bit silly and not giving any of the dogs a real chance. read more

I'm giving one star because even though the volunteers were wonderful, the lady, Natalie, was rude and condescending to my friend who came in wanting to adopt a cat. We took the entire tour...my friend filled out an adoption application and a volunteer application...my friend was promised by Natalie a call in a day or two, and that never happened...this was more than 6 weeks ago...shame on you! read more

We adopted our cat almost 2 years ago from this shelter. We own a home and had personal and vet references. For us, adopting a cat was a very seamless process and we had him within a week of applying! All the info they posted on petfinder and explained over the phone was a completely accurate description of our cat. We couldn't be happier! Always adopt, don't shop! read more

I have to say they did an excellent job with neutering our kitten. The only issue which I have read before was he left there scratching and with fleas. I get that these things happen and I would overlook that since they are a not for profit and no doubt care for the animals. They are reasonably priced and professional. Can I give this organization zero stars? My family and I went to the shelter to adopt a dog, since we recently put down our last one at age 17. To make a long story short, they declined us a shelter dog because we rarely took our last dog to the Veterinarian. I mentioned to the woman in charge that my four children would love to have another dog, and pointed out that some of the shelter animals have been there over a year, she said they would be better off there than with my family. I reminded the woman that my last dog lived to be 17, to no avail. How can they justify this attitude? read more

These people profile you. They catagorize you and tell you what pet you should have according to your age and profile. On paper I am a single male over 75 yrs old living alone. I am in great shape, I operate two sussessful businesses, I have a fenced in yard 6' high, 130 X 60. I have had dogs since I was a child. I visited their facility, and found two dogs that responded very well to me. I was told neither was right for me. They were both young animals under three years old. One was scheduled for adoption, the other was denied to me because of the animals age being under three years old. Guess what. That poor animal is still there now over a month ago. I told those so called do gooders to lose my application. I can go to any kennel and buy any animal or amimals at any time. I chose a rescue because I sympathize with these animals. The pet rescue business is exactly what it is. It is privatized. Obviously they get first choice on choosing animals from legitimate organizations and shelters. They charge as much or more than kennels and they act very independent. They make it more difficult to adopt a pet than a child. I do not recomend this place to any one. I found other places in the area whose policies were as bad or even worse than these people. My advice is to scrutenize these people, read carefully what they ask for and by no means fall in love with any pet before you take it home. They are predators relying on your feelings and the feelings of your family and children. They are in it for the Benjamins. Remember they you more than you need them. read more

My mom adopted a cat from Jersey Shore animal shelter. She has adopted there before and had many loving years with her cat but unfortunately he passed away. I took her there to adopt another one. We took him home and he hid in the closet for 2 weeks. My mom felt so bad that the cat was not happy so she returned him. Several months later she returned to the shelter to try again at adopting a cat. The woman in the office coldly told my mom that since she returned the previous cat, she can no longer adopt from this shelter. So be aware. If it doesn't work out with the pet you adopt and return it (no refund) you will be BAND FROM ADOPTING EVER AGAIN AT THIS SHLETER. read more

Many improvements have been made to this facility over the years. I do not know anybody who works there nor am I affiliated. The place was clean and the animals seemed well cared for. People forget that these types of facilities are fun by volunteers or people who are not making alot of money. I was approved for a cat although I did not adopt one. My two dogs passed away and I had a giant bag filled with unopened toys, medical supplies, blankets, and medicine. We spoiled our dogs. I was told no fitted sheets or pillow cases. They were very nasty when they told me that on the phone. The merchandise costs hundreds of dollars and because most of the stuff was new I could have sold it. Instead I donated it. The medication was all sealed and most prescriptions cost $90 or more. I gave 4 bottles of that $90 medication. The woman at the desk yanked the medications out of my hand. Didn't even say a word to me. Not one word! I told her my dogs benefitted so much from those medications. She looked at me and just yanked the medication I placed in ziplock bags from my hands.The other woman who was behind the desk told me to put the bag down "over there". I told her almost everything was new. I guess she wanted to see for herself. She talked to me like I was an underling and the only words out of her mouth were, "Put it over there". What nasty women. I will donate to other shelters from now on. read more

I found a friend for my little beagle mix. The staff did a great job with the meet and greet even when my little dog wouldn't stop barking at Frankie. My main concern was Frankie and my cats. They cat tested him and he passed. He passed the test at my house also. Both dogs get along well with each other. read more

What a great facility. They truly care about their animals and what I love the most is that they will keep an animal for as long as it takes for them to find a home. What comforts me about this place is the fact that they are very selective about who gets to adopt their animals. These animals have already been through enough - JSAC makes sure that these animals are going to a forever home, not to someone else who will just end up returning them, or worse, will not care for them and treat them as a member of their family. This is why it's 100 times harder to be approved for an adoption from a shelter than to purchase a dog from a pet store. You have to wonder about the shelters that will give their dogs to anyone who shows an interest. JSAC does a great job! read more

First let me start off by saying its a coincidence that myself and another reviewer have the same first name and last initial, we are two different people.. My mother and I went there last week to look at small dogs that would be a good fit for my home.. I could have just went and bought one but the thought of buying a dog while there's dogs that really need a home just sitting in a cell all day breaks my heart. We saw 3 chiweenies that we really liked so we figured we fill out the app. My mother did the app first because I knew the fact the house wasn't in my name would be an issue. Two days later she calls to check the status and after being bombarded with questions she got denied for a puppy. Its reasonable to be a little apprehensive to give someone a puppy that's never owned one but to just be a (excuse my language) total bitch about it is just beyond words. My mother tried to explain to me how the woman on the phone just made her feel terrible and almost brought her to tears. I found it a little hard to believe it was THAT bad so I figured I would fill out the app. Two days later I call to check the status and she says she's waiting for a copy of my lease (also reasonable) to which I reply, "technically its my mothers house but I live there and have lived there for almost 2 years". She says (with attitude) " well then who is Mable?", I tell her that's my aunt that passed away which is how my mom inherited the house. She says (with a major attitude) " well we need your mother to write us a letter and say you're allowed to have a dog". At this point I'm just blown away as I'm 31 years old and to have to ask my mommy if I can have a dog in my house is just belittling (at this point I can tell she's getting enjoyment out of her little power trip). I tell her that my mother also filled out an app with my address and without any pause whatsoever she says "well we don't have it". She didn't ask for my mothers name or anything at all so that was just a lie. Keep in mind the whole time she's got an attitude and I really felt like I was bothering her by trying to adopt a dog. Finally I just said thank you and hung up. So here I am, a 31 year old single male with no kids and no other pets in the house trying to adopt a dog THAT NEEDS A HOME and getting denied. Keep in mind i told them i live alone and I work from home so I'm home ALL DAY so the dog would never be alone and they wouldn't even consider it. I get the fact you don't want to let me adopt a puppy but with the interrogation process my mother went through and the way they treat people I would never even consider adopting or donating from these people. Steer very clear from this shelter, one reviewer said it perfectly that they need these animals to continue getting donations and that's exactly what it seems like. P.s. I have never given anyone or any business a bad review in my life but, the way they treat people like criminals is just absurd. read more

I've adopted 2 cats from this shelter and they are the loves of my life. This shelter takes their time in finding the RIGHT home for every animal! They have a life long return policy and try to avoid seeing the animals come back which is why they are so careful as to where they place their animals. Yes, I feel they are more on the caution side vs other shelters (from what I have gathered by various people), but other shelters do not take the time or care to do what the staff here does. They are very clean and the animals are very well taken care from what I can tell. I've read some of the negative reviews and it saddens me to think they were so unhappy with their experience, however to tell others to not donate or not to adopt means you are negatively affecting the other animals there waiting for their chance to find a home. If people were such animal lovers and want to good by them then they wouldn't say things like "don't adopt from there" "don't donate to them" because in the long run you are only hurting the animals. I've been in the animal business as a vet tech for a long time and see first hand what its like to see animals suffering or negligent owners and I didn't get that feeling at all working with the staff and volunteers here. I took the chance on two different occasions to adopt from them fully knowing these are shelter animals and there is no guarantee that they were 100% healthy, I took my chances and with the 2nd one found out the kitten I adopted had developed a skin infection soon after....I didn't go back to them complaining they gave me a sick cat or that they are horrible people because they should have seen this, no, I gave them my word and commitment that I would take care of this cat, and I did. I did call to tell them however what my vet had said and to take precaution with the other animals this kitten was with. They were apologetic and offered me the chance to return her, to which I said no. I do not fault them, rightfully so, as they say prior to adoption and on the contract they cannot guarantee health. The skin infection cleared up just fine and she has been fine ever since. I wish people would take the time before writing negative reviews for any business to walk a day in their shoes. What do they see on a daily basis, what do they have to deal with on a daily basis, why are there such strict rules or regulations in place? You don't know what they go through and so for people to write such damaging reviews when you have no idea what they do is careless on your part. Know the facts and from what I gather nobody, unless you've been where they have been, should judge so harshly. read more

I, too, was turned down. Fine. But did I have to be spoken to in such a rude and disrespectful manor? Think not. I was turned down because I did not take my bichon to the vet enough. Did she know why-because she shakes uncontrollably for days after the visit-that she vomits in the car because she can't take a car ride-that we bought an RV because they only vacation we can take is to go camping so we can bring her with us!!! No. Instead treated like a criminal. I have to hold my tongue for the things I truly would like to say. Maybe your employees should learn how to treat humans, as well? read more

Be careful of this shelter. They just sold me a sick cat. Gave me vetting info as I walked out the door, not before. At home, he ate very little, drank very little but played in his safe room. Vomited a little bile the next evening. Next morning pink vomit with a roundworm in it. Apparently the shelter didn't give him a stool test; didn't deworm him as they were supposed to do. Vet also found evidence of roundworm in his stool so dewormed him with a safe product and the cat vomited all the next day and overnight. Returned to vet. She said vomiting a symptom of the worms and not caused by the dewormer. He lost 5 oz. of weight in one day was dehydrated. Vet said the animal was "unfit for sale." No recourse because a shelter is not for profit, not pet shop or breeder. I'm out his cost plus the vetting. Upon returning the animal today, shelter Project Director put up a wall saying this is all stress related and I probably gave him the wrong food, etc., etc. Vomiting all day yesterday was all stress related. Said vets exaggerate conditions and just want to do more testing. Shelter didn't want my proof of vet visits or any other info. So I'm out $350 plus cost of food and supplies. Vomit stains all over my carpeting, and the cat brought fleas into the house. Hope your experience is better, but beware. read more

A great place to adopt. We brought Oliver the schnauzer home 3 years ago. Love the fact they do pictures with Santa every Christmas too. Ollie loves his house and his dog friends and family. A super clean facility with very friendly staff and volunteers. Not too sure how a person can give an animal shelter a bad yelp review. Obviously they weren't fit to adopt a dog. The staff are trained to know what to look for before letting a dog go to any old person. read more

They are very judgmental. Told me as a single mom I couldn't adopt 2 years ago. It was much better for the dog I was interested in to still be there a month later when I saw her walking in the parade with them... I also have a small dog who gets out no matter how many precautions I take and he got out beginning of September and they got him there. After telling me to walk him to do his business and not have him out otherwise I paid the fee to pick him up. They said I would get fined if he wasn't licensed which he is. So today I got a ticket for dog running loose( they said i would get fined for non licensing but since they couldn't do that they fined me for him getting loose) If I had to pick him up because he got out thats pretty obvious! So you pay to retrieve your animal then get a $100 ticket. Then they wonder why animals are abandoned. who can afford their "care and help" read more

I had a similar experience. I tried for years to adopt a cat. At first I was denied because I didn't own a home. Then, when I did own a home I applied again. I was again turned down because I worked and was told I wouldn't be home enough. I tried a few years later when I was a stay at home mom.....you guessed it turned down again.this time because I had young children....THEN one day I asked if we could come in and just play with the cats in their " cat room"..answer? NO, no interaction unless you intend to adopt....WHAT A SCAM.....they have to create a "need" so they can continue to fundraise...PS I have 3 kitties now. All strays..they are well loved and cared for. Had them for years.....They have tripped the line between being "selective" to upright unreasonable. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! read more

I adopted my first pup from JSAC in 1973, the process back then was pick out a pup and take her home. This time around I had to fill out an application before I was allowed to do a meet/greet which was fine. We met our girl in the lobby as there were no room open for our meet/greet. Not ideal but you could tell she was a sweetie. After a few days I came back and did a one on one visit for about a half hour. They had a room free and gave me some toys for her to play with. A slow start but she quickly began to play and I could tell she was a perfect fit for our family. A little more paper work and I was ready to take my girl home. Jude (as she is now known) is a doll! She came housebroken, with house manners etc...so I believe that she came from a home. She is my 7th shelter pup and I would not get a dog any other way. It can sometimes take a bit of time to find the right fit but oh it is so worth the time. The staff at JSAC couldn't have been more helpful as I went through the process. I would highly recommend giving them a try when you look for a four legged family addition. Do adopt your newest four legged family member as they will never disappoint you ...lots of love and tail wags will be in your future for sure. read more

Very disappointing experience here. I love dogs and have always been an advocate for pet adoption. I have adopted 2 dogs in the past from other shelters. Both dogs had full healthy lives. The first dog I adopted when I was a young single girl age 23. When she passed away, my husband and I adopted another dog just before our first child was born. So, I am now a married wife/mother of 2 (age 11 and 10). We own our own home on an acre, with a huge fenced in yard. We just lost our dog of 13 years (the second dog) in May to a brain tumor so I came here with my kids to fill out an application in hopes to adopt another dog to add to our family. When I called to see if we were approved a very rude man told me we were turned down. Quote: "Your last dog was overdue for his shots. We are really looking for people who take their pets to the vet annually"....I was appalled. This staff member was referring to my 13 year old DEAD dog not having his annual vaccinations. Was he for real? The reason why the dog didn't get his annual vaccinations is because he got sick and died. This staff member kept me on the phone berating me as if I was a criminal. My kids were devastated by the news. I am so sorry I even went to JSAC. We will be happily adopting from another area shelter. read more
