At the rear of a little corner grocery store, Harith the chef holds sway. Got a chicken schwarma platter, with a highly seasoned chicken, sitting on a bed of greens. It came with a 1-2 cup of homemade hummus and tahini dressing plus garlic mayo. It cost me $11. My friend got homemade falafel platter. It was yummy and cheaper by a dollar. Terrific find. This is mostly a review for their hookah supplies, though it's worth checking out for any goods middle eastern. Reasonably priced shisha and coals, and downright cheap hookahs. If you're looking for a starter hookah this is the best place I can recommend. They don't have the super high quality brands, but you can get a decent hookah for less than $30 (South St Market charges $45 for the same hookah I got for $28). I prefer the cheap ones since I'm liable to break the vases anyway. Only things I modified on the cheap hookah were the hose (got a nice one for $8 at South St Market) and added a larger plate to collect ash ($3 i think, from the tobacco store near 3rd and south). They don't have a massive selection, but they're quite convenient to me. Plus, they're friendly guys and they have a good selection of middle eastern goods as well - tahini, beans, etc. They also just opened up a lunch counter and make falafel and shawarma. Have not tried this yet. read more

Stopped here after visiting expensive food eateries in nearby Fishtown, and hungry for a bite. Saw the corner store, saw a sign that said "falafel", and double-parked while my friend went in. After 5 minutes, and me saying "what's taking so long", I decided to park legit, and went in myself to see what's was going on. I noticed immediately that the quality of the foods sold was good stuff, not cheap stuff. The falafel sandwiches were HUGE and freshly made. The folks preparing food were great. I am fortunate to have Jerusalem Foods right on my block. I love Middle Eastern & Mediterranean foods and love to cook, so this corner food store is so convenient. The fresh lamb, chicken, spices, dried chickpeas, walnuts, pita bread, goat cheese, feta cheese, dates, figs, Basmati rice, fresh hummus, olives and olive oil makes this a cook's dream. Really was excited about some decent falafel (I had hoped). Ordered that jawn, ate half of a wrap, cracked a filling on a pebble they had not removed before making the falafel balls. Thing was 2/3 the size of a jelly bean. Was not excited about the ensuing dental bills/pain nor the very mediocre albeit very cheap sandwich. They only get two star because they have a great selection of hard to find middle eastern ingredients and the owners are really good people. You gotta sift your chickpeas. read more

Like many older shops on Girard Avenue the look of Jerusalem can be a little awkward, though don't be scared to try it cause its worth stopping in for a fast sandwich like chicken or lamb shwarma or falafel. The Middle Eastern grocery sells quality spices, dry goods like lentil and fava beans, corn meal, flour, other cooking goods like apple vinegar, lemon vinegar, honey, jams, all sorts of oils, frozen goat, sheep & feta cheese, figs, dates, sesame candies - all sorts of exotic things along with well priced basic staple items. They are usually really nice, and will answer questions which is helpful since many labels have no English! It isnt fancy though you can get interesting, good quality products. When on a tight budget I find their version if Ramen to be much more gentle and flavorful compared to mainstream version. read more

Exquisite Diamond in the Ruff This place is like finding a buried treasure. Just look at the shelves and there will surely be something to catch your eye. Other reviewers have described it well. But this review is mainly about the meals they prepare individually for the customer. Sometimes there's a steaming pot of an exotic stew with chunks of lamb or chicken and recently I stumbled upon the Branzino fish platter. For 12 dollars an individual fish blackened and grilled to perfection and a huge salad with special Egyptian fish sauce dressing- much better than Caesar but similar. It is divine, healthy and not your average take-out. If you haven't noticed- Branzino plural Branzini is a Mediterranean sea bass served in many upscale restaurants for far higher prices. Wish I could upload a photo of this beauty taken before I devoured it tonight. Many people walk by this place- near that charming Front and Girard el stop-I went in for a soda one day and was shocked. Do yourself a favor- give it a try- live a little! read more
