I have a roof leak that I couldn't diagnose and also several roofers couldn't diagnose. Lara & Sons came out and after detailed inspection found that the skylight was leaking from the top surface of the skylight. He showed me water damage on the inside trim of the skylight. He also gave me recommendation of the adhesive sealant they use to seal skylights (Chem Link M-1). He was very helpful and I'm sealing the skylight today. Hopefully it fixes the leak! Had my roof replaced with asphalt shingles. Gerardo is 2nd generation and keeps the business operating at an all time high. I only have a 1185sqft bungalow which was in need of vents and gutter/downspouts. the initial week slated turned out to be about 3-4 days. Cleaned up after each days work and the finished product looks good. Gerardo and team replaced the areas of soft or rotted wood and repainted. Covered up a small opening under the eaves with some metal mesh to keep critters out and air flow moving. Overall, The team knocked the job out the park. The first smaller job we hired them for was to replace many missing shingles from a localized area we noticed while cleaning our gutters; there was also a very noticeable buckled portion of the roof on the opposite side. What I really appreciated was his integrity. The plywood under the missing shingles looked bad to me and he easily could have said it needed replacing, thereby increasing the cost. In the past year and a half, two different insurance companies canceled coverage on our 100-year-old house due to the deteriorating condition of the roof. So even though it wasn't leaking (yet) and our roof inspection asserted that we could still squeeze out a few more years, I decided to bite the bullet and get quotes for a full roof replacement. It's not like labor is going to get cheaper in the future. We have a small house so the square footage wasn't immense, but this job required removal of three layers of shingles (including old wood shakes as the first layer!), removal and reinstallation of existing solar panels, and replacing all plywood sheathing and gutters/downspouts. I contacted a dozen different roofing companies, and received five quotes over the span of a week. Among those five quotes was a significant variance in price -- the highest quote was over 75% higher than the lowest. This was partly due to differences in how work was priced (e.g. some companies included gutter replacement, while others charged an additional fee) and partly due to company size/technology/availability (the larger shops with drones/software and more employees also have more overhead costs). Jesus Lara & Sons came in with one of the lower quotes, and I liked Gerardo's demeanor and honesty when he came out with one of his guys to inspect the project. He was the only one of the roofers to acknowledge the rapidly-changing cost of plywood and that the price/sheet at the time that the project would commence would affect his quote. In retrospect, this was probably because the other roofers built a significant profit margin into their quote in order to account for the increase in plywood cost. After considering several factors, we ended up going with Jesus Lara & Sons. I'll be honest -- cost was the biggest factor. Roof replacements ain't cheap. But it also helped immensely that Gerardo was one of only two of the roofing companies that would agree to include the solar panel removal/reinstallation in their quote so that I didn't have to coordinate with two different companies simultaneously. When we signed the contract, Gerardo told us that they were scheduling about a month out so we got on their schedule for about 5 weeks later. Fast-forward 4 weeks, and Gerardo calls me to let me know that they have an opening a week earlier. This worked out much better for us, so we coordinated for Gerardo's crew to come out the following Monday. It ended up raining Sunday/Monday so we had to push the start date back to Tuesday, but Gerardo was communicative and responsive throughout. On Tuesday, the crew came with their trailer and removed the solar panels and began demolition on the existing roof. They finished demo on Wednesday and began putting up plywood sheathing that afternoon, and by Thursday all sheathing was installed. Friday morning the shingles arrived, and the rest of the day Friday and all day Saturday the underlayment and shingles continued going up. Sunday the crew was off, and Monday they finished up the roof and flashing. Tuesday they reinstalled the solar panels and finished installing gutters/downspouts. The roof now looks fantastic, and I think even our insurer will agree. Gerardo was super responsive throughout the entire process, stopping by nearly every day to provide progress reports and to get feedback on any decisions that needed to be made. The crew did a great job of thoroughly cleaning up at the end of each work day, which was very much appreciated. Though I hope to not have to solicit any roofing services for a long time, I won't hesitate to contact Gerardo again if I do. You'd be doing yourself a huge favor to include Jesus Lara & Sons Roofing among the quotes that you collect for any of your future roofing projects. They did not have the fanciest technology or contract/payment processing mechanisms, but their work is top-notch quality and comes with very dependable, trustworthy service. I promise I'm not shilling for the company (I mean, come on -- have you ever seen a fake Yelp review that was nearly a thousand words long? They don't pay them THAT much). I'm just cognizant that roof replacements are one of the largest maintenance costs that homeowners incur, and so I want to add my data point out there for those who are trying to optimize effort for reward by putting their due diligence into finding the right roofer. Hate to leave a bad review to a small family owned and operated business but the owner messed up not once but twice. We had an appointment set up but the owner went no show on me and failed to call me back so i called him the next day in the morning to reschedule to 12:00 noon. He called me at 12:00 on the dot and told me he forgot to put me on schedule and currently on his way to another jobsite. His only reason is because "he has too many businesses to take care of and things happened". If you want poor customer service go see this guy. read more
