Terrible reservation system that is rigged. When booking weeks in advance, the only option was to book the bar top. I tried all available slots for the day I was interested in; there were many slots available, and all only offered bar-top seating. Then, when we arrived, the hostess was arrogant and dismissive when I raised this. When I provided feedback through their survey, they sent this vulgar email saying that an "enhanced understanding of the seating chart on the website may help." They are so full of themselves for basic food and a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It's Portland, after all: in the city of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. read more

My mom recently moved to Lake O from Boston and we have been trying new places so she can find a favorite. Jewel Box came up a lot and I happened to get a last minute reservation. We ordered drinks and the shishito peppers which were tasty. You share sides here and we each got a steak. The fries were delicious and crispy and well seasoned as well as the asparagus. Both our steaks were well seasoned and cooked well. There was bread available but our waiter didn't offer it or bring it to us (I asked at the end of the meal when I noticed others had it) I love the inside of the place, dark and moody and cozy. read more

We called last minute for a spot for 2 and if we hurried we could get right in. So we did. First, what a beautiful environment they have. Our friendly waiter Brody helped us to make the best choices and we Did!! Steak and lobster, wedge chopped salad, mashed potatoes. Brody helped with the perfect white wine taste and excellent mocktails. We had profiteroles with warm dark chocolate sauce and a delicious pistachio gelato with chocolate sauce and a fabulous americano for dessert ! It was the perfect meal. Really cozy steakhouse in Lake Oswego and a great spot for a double date. The vibe is warm and relaxed, and we didn't felt rushed. Brody our server were nice enough to take our coats when we sat down which was a nice touch. We had the porterhouse and it was phenomenal -- easily the highlight of the night. We also tried a few different cuts and every steak came out cooked perfectly. However I do wished they had a chimichurri or something to that extent. The lobster and rosemary fries were good, but pricier than we expected for what it was. Not bad, just a little surprising. Overall, great food, solid atmosphere, and a fun place to hang out with friends over a really good steak. Would definitely come back. read more

Extra bonus stars for the vibes!! This place is super swanky. Looks like it belongs in NYC but is a good fit for LO. Had a reservation and got seated immediately. The restaurant was filled for our entire dinner so I highly suggest making a resy. The bread is dreamy. Super pillowy fluffy. I enjoyed the salmon and asparagus as a side; my husband got the Kansas City strip and unfortunately his was undercooked. He isn't one to send his food back so this ruined the experience for him. I was curious to see if the food would be consistently great (it was great last time) and we were not disappointed. We've eaten at least 6 times since it opened. All meals have been excellent, service excellent, ambience a bit loud but that stems from the fact that the restaurant is small and has always been full. In general we love the place. BUT, we had an unexpected issue the last time we were there with possibly toxic shrimp served as a shrimp cocktail. Nothing can be demonstrated other than the fact that there were four of us, and only two of us shared one shrimp cocktail. The two that shared the same shrimp cocktail became neurologically impaired about 6 hours after eating the shrimp and within 5 minutes of each other. The restaurant has no was of making phone contact, no public email address, and basically is only reachable via text during the 4 days per week it is open. Alas one of us is a practicing physician and the other a retired Anatomy Professor we reported this to our local health department and left the restaurant a lengthy text copy of the report to the health department. The heath department contacted us within a day of our report and as dozens of questions. The restaurant's only response came four days later, and consisted of "Thanks for sharing. No other guests were affected." IMHO, this was just about the lamest, most indifferent response we have received from a business we've patronized reasonably regularly. In all honestly, a responsible business would have been more proactive and far less blasé in their response. At minimum I would have expected an apology even if it had never been demonstrated that the shrimp were toxic. This experience has put us off, and has forced us to reconsider whether this attitude is consistent with a business we'd like to continue to support. In all a disappointing experience. read more

5/5 Jewel Box is such a hidden gem in Lake Oswego! The space is cozy, intimate, and perfect for a date night -- definitely make a reservation since it's small and fills up fast. The bartender was super friendly and recommended a tequila cocktail that ended up being one of the best I've had. The steak frites were cooked perfectly and full of flavor, and the JB's burger was just as impressive -- juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying. What a hidden gem, it was my first time here and it won't be my last. The decor was super colorful, swanky, and perfect for a date night. Everyone was very friendly and our waiter Stephen was really great. We were celebrating an anniversary and the owner came over to congratulate us and gave us some complementary bubbles. People had a good time here enjoying all around the tables. Prices are about right; not too pricey. Their Bartinis were good. Vesper was even better. Steak was perfectly charred with parts of nice crunchy texture. Cooked perfectly in medium rare temperature. Lacked some seasoning though. Mashed potatoes was the best thing, but was overseasoned which I told the owner. Asparagus was decent with butter and citrous notes. Lake Oswego definitely needed a place like this. Fun little touches like the card on the cocktail or the horse holding the knife. The flat iron was off the charts, cowboy wasn't as stellar. The interior of The Jewel Box is lovely so we were looking forward to being there. I ordered the strip steak which is almost 70 dollars expecting a pretty great meal for this amount. The steak arrived with nothing else on the plate, it's ala carte. And not very good. My husband cooks a much better steak at home. So I ordered fries to go with the steak and they were average. My husband had the salmon and said it tasted fishy. If it's fresh it won't taste fishy. Was this just a bad night? I don't know because we won't go back. read more

We were visiting from out of state and wanted a good steak and they did a great job in the food and service. Our server was very attentive to us and the other tables as it is a cozy steakhouse. Wow! From the first step in the door of this little Jewel box I was so impressed. The decor is beautiful. My companion and I were greeted by a polite hostess and seated quickly. The restaurant was full of guest that all seemed to be enjoying themselves. A good sign. Our server was knowledgeable and offered excellent suggestions. I had the fennel salad and a steak. We ordered the blistered shishito pepper appetizer which was tasty and generously portioned, the Caesar salad (caper parmesan lemon anchovy crumb house dressing) big enough to split for two. My wife and I both had the Wagyu flat iron steaks which were cook to perfection exactly as ordered. For sides we had the Zaetar spiced carrots and herb French fries. Harnessing technology, the reservation system to book, and subsequent follow up reminders is well orchestrated. Service is top drawer, and the steak, potatoes, and chopped salad were delivered and prepared to perfection. Wine list is fairly priced, with some good values in Oregon Pinot and French reds. Lisa, the owner, came by on the front end to surprise us with some celebratory bubbles, and to wish us well!
