Been wanting to go here for years and wish I'd made it happen sooner because it did not disappoint! The "new gnocchi" (pictured) was incredible with the creamy porcini sauce, sun-dried tomatoes and spinach. Also shared the mussels and they were cooked perfectly, very delicious. The portions are generous. It was incredibly loud inside, which made conversation difficult, but I believe that may have just been luck of the draw. My most recent visit to Zinc was, unfortunately, unremarkable. The experience began with a lackluster greeting from the host--server--owner? I'm not entirely sure of her role, but what was clear is that she had no interest in setting the tone for a pleasant dining experience. Sadly, this kind of indifferent service has become far too common in Portland. With the rising cost of dining out, people will inevitably start voting with their wallets. I ordered the mussels from the Happy Hour menu. The portion was decent, though amusingly, the "discount" was just $2 off the regular dinner price. The broth started off well, but quickly became overwhelmingly salty--so much so that it felt like there was MSG in it. My tongue felt raw, and the intensity of the saltiness made it difficult to continue eating. I couldn't finish the dish. To be fair, my drink was well-executed. However, the overall experience was overshadowed by the poor service. No matter how friendly or engaged I tried to be, the staff member simply didn't seem to care that I was dining in her establishment. If this were my bistro, I'd be addressing these issues immediately. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good your food or drinks are if your staff isn't doing their job with intention and care. Poor service makes good food taste bad. read more

Sorry, we eat out all the time and love to enjoy good food. With prices these days getting very high to eat out, it's important to me to serve good food for the money (over $100 for 2 people). So, we went to the cozy-looking Zinc for a quick bite and a drink. We had the burrata & beet salad, which was pretty good 7 out of 10. Then we had the pasta bolognese, which wasn't real bolognese. No flavor, very heavy on the cream. (Go try bolognese across the city and then you'll know) this just tasted like cream. Then we had the meatballs, which were also flavorless in a brown cream sauce. The meat was flavorless and the sauce (some mix of cream and who knows what) was also flavorless or had no flavor point of view. And smothered in sauce. The Aperol Spritzes were overly filled to the rim with ice (not how that drink is served) and the Prosecco they used didn't taste great (just use La Marca everyone). So, skimpy pours in my mind which added to the "I'm paying a lot for an experience I'm not enjoying" vibe. Service was fine and of course, it's Portland so everyone is "nice". But IMO this place needs to make better food and taste their dishes. We were disappointed with the meal and won't be back. But seems like enough people love it, ‍‍ so my one opinion won't matter much. read more

This place has been on my radar since the last place that was here went out of business. I had heard great reviews so on a recent Saturday night it was on. We got there around 6 PM. There are no reservations accepted so first come and first served. We were seated right away by an open window, I thought it was extremely clean turns out it's a huge sliding window (think bay window). Which is great in this time of COVID. That actually gave me a huge relief as I'm still COVID-conscious even though our state thinks lifting the mask mandate for health facilities in April is a good idea. But I digress. We started the evening with a hot tea, which they have many varieties we ordered lemon and got mint but it was still delightful. Drink slowly because they don't apparently offer refills. I ordered the polenta cakes and kale salad both of which I would get again. I ordered the brownie for dessert. All were great. The server apparently dropped off the check and came back with it and we didn't realize so after dessert she kind of got confrontational with how are we doing? We thought we were waiting on the check so a bit of confusion. I realize they are only open from 4 PM to 9 PM and it was getting on 8 PM with people waiting but just a bit of a misunderstanding. Kind of a rough way to end the evening but all in all I will try it again. read more

I work in the industry and I have to say; the staff here is amazing. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive . Our server Alison gave great recommendations and checked back at all the right times. We never once had to wait for her to take care of our needs. We had the shrimp cocktail, braised carrots, mussels and tomahawk pork chop and all were executed perfectly. Truly- don't miss the pork chop it is phenomenal. I usually go for steak but I went with Alison's recommendation, the pork chop , and was truly amazed. Also, the salted chocolate mousse with cinnamon meringue was absolutely delightful. Zinc is under new ownership, and it is very clear in the best way. Upon walking into Zinc, you are immediately greeted by the owner every night of the week with a friendly smile and quick service. If a table isn't ready, don't worry the bar will prepare you a drink while you wait. The ambience and decor have changed. The space is lively and always in tune with its guests. The lighting is bright and airy with lots of live plants in an amazing playlist that keeps the atmosphere warm and friendly. The menu has changed since the new owner has taken over. Key new items are homemade pastas and fun, fish dishes. It's clear that the chef and team in the back of house have a lot of experience with sourcing excellent fresh fish. We have been there now three times over the last three months and each time ordering a different dish. My favorite: the meatballs and the affagatto. My partner's favorite: clams, beet salad and trout. Meatballs - these have a rich sauce and are delicate. Perfect for a cold rainy night to warm your soul. Clams - the portion is huge, priced well and delicious. Seems like an afternoon wine and French delicacy. Beet salad (pictured) - this is a new menu item, perfect amount of cheese and beet. Very colorful and fun! I don't like beets and enjoyed. Trout - impeccable. The trout has a dill sauce, stuffed with dandelion greens and roe. Flavor was well balanced and the fish was perfect. Affogato - the vanilla ice cream is rolled in toffee. What more can I say. Bonus: Chocolate Mouse has a cinnamon topping that really makes it stand out. (The empty plate pictured). What can I say, the food is absolutely delicious! Everything is great, you can't make a mistake on this menu. The fries have so much flavor, I wanted another one after I was done with them. The Risotto is very soft and tender, and the sauce is just so epic. The Ravioli is soft, filled with plenty of cheese, and the sauce has a wonderful mix of flavors that hit the palate nicely. The plates are a bit small, so if you want a ton of food then you will be dissatisfied. Service was great and the place is nice and clean. There's sitting inside and outside. read more

We were very excited to try this place but there were a few things we didn't like about it. It has great atmosphere until you need to use the restroom which is literally in their kitchen. Specifically in their dishwashing area. I don't even understand how they can pass inspection because of this. Getting back there disrupts whomever is working. My husband got plowed into by the dishwasher while he was trying to get to the bathroom. You don't believe it until you see it. Be prepared to eat one person at a time. They called it family style dining which I have experienced before but usually the 2nd or 3rd dish comes out a few minutes after the first but the timing was so far apart one can finish the meal before the other gets it. I had the steak which tasted good but it came out with nothing else on the plate. Just steak. I have never experienced that. Usually there is a vegetable or something else. My husband got the bucatini which he couldn't eat. We love homemade pasta because it has a bit more of a bite but this tasted raw. He sent it back but did not order anything else because of everything else that was going on. Our waiter made us very uncomfortable because he seemed so annoyed at anything that came out of our mouths. He would give us a smile but it was so obvious that it was fake and he was in a mood. He is definitely in the wrong profession. The only thing we "complained" about was the pasta but he had this attitude from the moment we sat down. I wanted to like this place so much. I am always happy to give a bad night at a restaurant a second chance but there were so many things here that I probably won't do that with Zinc. read more

There were three of us who ventured by on our way to another restaurant and saw the happy hour sign with a bit of time left, so we went inside out of the rain, into a warm, festive place, oozing with charm, and enjoyed an amazing happy hour feast. Had dinner with 3 friends last night for the first time at Zinc. We had a great experience! The service was excellent, food delicious and prices reasonable. The atmosphere was comfy but like most restaurants without acoustic ceilings, the conversation volume around us was loud. We all had a cocktail, I tried the elderflower Manhattan and the mushroom Gnocchi, my friends had Bolognese and the soft shell crab pasta. We shared plates of assorted warmed olives and crusty bread. Great place. Didn't know much about it before we went but it looked good from the menu. We were not disappointed at all. It was a busy Friday night so it was loud but not obnoxiously so. The food was fantastic as were the drinks. Many small plates to share amongst a table of four, it was delicious and filling and we all got to try everything. The bread was outstanding, as was the gnocchi and the meatballs. It's not conveniently located for us to make it a regular spot, but we really wish we could. No. These plates were not big enough for myself, let alone to share. 3 of the tiniest meatballs I've ever seen. When they brought the risotto I was in shock. An ambulance couldn't even revive me! Visited here for the first time after checking out their menu on-line. A friend and I shared the tortellini with ricotta & parmesan with a lemon pesto and prawns that was perfect on a hot summer day. The meatballs shaped more like a croquet were really nice along with the pear and chevre pizette. We ended with the creme brulee. It was not very busy for a Saturday night, I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

We ate very little of our food and when the server came to the table she asked if we wanted boxes and we said no. She never asked if we enjoyed our food. The service was poor. My daughter ordered a mocktail and she got carded. She had to explain that she ordered a non-alcoholic drink. The server didn't apologize, just said oh' yeah.
