This is one of the most welcoming establishments in the Portland area. The Dullahan is a converted house at the corner of B and 4th. The first thing you'll notice is the ample outdoor seating - perfect for enjoying a meal and/or drinks outside in nice weather, shaded by large trees. The vibe inside is cozy, with lots of stained wood and warm lighting. The front room has a fireplace, and the dark wood L-shaped bar is inviting. Decorating the walls are a large Jameson's Irish Whiskey mirror and a variety of photos, sayings, and Irish knickknacks. Absent the sound of a telltale accent, you won't know whether you're in Lake Oswego or Limerick. Somewhat hidden is a basement area with a TV, board games, shuffleboard, a dartboard, and mini-foosball table. There are a dozen or so beers on tap, including Guinness, of course. Pints are served in special Guinness glasses. Behind the bar are a nice selection of Scotch and Irish Whiskeys. Appetizer favorites include Bavarian Bangers (soft pretzel and banger sausage) and Pan Seared Brussel Sprouts. The menu includes staples (Fish N' Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Bangers & Mash, etc.) as well as a selection of sandwiches and burgers. My family and I came here after my brother told us about this spot. Luckily it wasn't super far from her place in Lake Oswego. My mom's cousin ordered Sheppard pie, they said it was a little different from a traditional Sheppards pie but still enjoyed it. My brother ordered the bangers and mash, he had been to Europe before and said it tasted pretty traditional! My brother also told us that deftones family owns this place which is super cool since we are from Sacramento and that's where deftones are also from! Another wonderful outing to Dullahan! We always get the Fish and Chips as it is lightly breaded and tender; the pepper on the fries is a bonus. Outside, there was a private party going on, the owner and his wife were renewing their vows and had a private party out there quite festive. One of our friends is a local vocal coach and he was showcasing his students singing at Dullahans. My niece was singing so we went to support her. The venue was packed with locals. My husband and I visited this house-turned-pub a year ago and loved the ambience of this place because it reminded us of our own pubs back in the UK and had a great selection of British and local beers. Unfortunately, we were not impressed by their fish and chips and shepherd's pie. The fish portions were small, heavily laden in batter and chewy and the chips were oily, overran the plate and some were burnt. The shepherd's pie was mostly potato and cheese with minimal meat which tasted odd and grainy. The only thing we actually enjoyed were our pints of Smithicks and local cider. Regardless, because we were visiting the area and could not find another local Irish pub, we decided to give this place another chance. We ordered the fish and chips and shepherd's pie again sans cheese. This time, the food was totally different. The two cod portions were huge and laying on a bed lightly fried chips with coleslaw and tartar sauce on the side. My first bite was shear heaven. The batter was light and crunchy, and the hot cod almost melted in my mouth. The meat and gravy mixture in my husband's shepherd's pie was extremely flavorful and the potato topping not too heavy. The local Oregonian beer and seasonal cider were absolute winners as well. We told the waitress about our past experience and asked what had changed? She said they now use a tempura batter for the fish which is much lighter and crisper and the pie recipe had some changes made to it so was less stodgy. She said that the wait staff listen to what the customers have to say about the food and the chef incorporates any changes that he deems necessary. I told her improvements to the food was notable and to tell the chef and owner that we will definitely be coming back. Highly recommend. read more

Came here around noon with a couple of friends and it automatically felt warm and welcoming. They are kid friendly. We sat outside (stroller accessible) from side entrance and there were loads of tables to choose from either with or without shade. Bathroom was extremely well kept. The staff were going out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. They noticed the baby sleeping and asked if the music needed to be turned down at all. It might look on the smaller side from the outside but they do have a downstairs as well. Great list of beers on tap. Capable of making off the menu cocktails. De li ci ous! I've been here twice to get a couple pints of true Guinness, food and service are all top notch and the outdoor area is fantastic! We got the Reuben dip to share - it's sort of a hot dressing with corned beef and cabbage in it, that you spread on toast. This sounds super simple but it's incredibly delicious! My only knock is that it should come with extra slices of bread to spread it on. There's plenty for 6 pieces of bread, but it only comes with 4. On my most recent visit I got the brisket plate. The meat was really good, well marbled and flavored. However, the standout of the plate were the brussel sprouts. They have chopped up slices of bacon and feta, perfectly cooked so they have just a slight give but still a bit of a crunch. I could eat these all day! The outdoor area is unexpectedly massive, and they have a tv in the outdoor bar area, which was perfect for watching summer Olympics. read more

Disclaimer: My husband was raised in the UK and we've spent many an hour in authentic pubs throughout our adult life together. While we don't really expect to find a truly Irish pub experience in the US, there are plenty who try for decent food, hospitality and some decent brews on tap. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. I will give credit to the rustic vibe which does slightly resemble a small village pub you might come across now and then. And our server was friendly and attentive enough to warrant a decent tip. My husband ordered a half and half which is an equal mix of Guinness and Lager. He found it to be an uneven pour and light on Guinness. Not a dealbreaker, but that's the kind of thing you expect them to get right. But what really shocked us was what the kitchen was passing off as a Shepherds pie. This gold standard - everywhere - is a mix of ground beef (or lamb), peas/carrots, gravy sauce, topped with a thick layer of mashed potato and a spare bit of cheese. This pub reinvented some kind of gooey mix of oddly-spiced, over-cooked, ground meat topped with a thick, greasy layer of cheese and about a tablespoon of potato lost under all that. I didn't finish mine, brought it home and ended up tossing it. Both the person who greeted us at the door and the bartender gave off weird, unwelcoming vibes, which is kind of sad because this place could be a neighborhood gem with the right management and attention to kitchen details. The portion of fish is a generous 12 oz filet, along with a mound of crispy fries and a small scoop of coleslaw.
