This was my first time purchasing items in the store ad. I just downloaded the app had no idea what I was to do. I ask this lady stocking in the isle if she could help me, with a big smile she set her stuff down secured the area by making sure her stuff was not in anyone's way, she then proceeded to ask me what she could help me with? I explain to her I just download the app and I do not understand how to use it, she went over and above from showing me what I had to do when there was a barcode for the item, to locating when u don't have to clip an item and how to use the app it made it so much easier then searching all items since I did not have time to look earlier. This store did a remodel, but unfortunately, they don't have a good they used to. They haven't had sesame seed bagels in the bakery department for months doesn't make any sense then today I tried to order a cake and I was told that the decorator was on a leave of absent I said I'll take a simple cake. No wonder this location only has 2.5 stars. Not one employee said one word to me except for a nice young man in the deli, but even then, they all seem so concerned with each other. The man in the deli started to yell across the deli counter in the middle of helping me so he could talk to another employee. The cashier never said "hello" to me or anything else except for my total. As I was walking out, the whole front end of the store was just employees walking back n forth chatting with each other Whatever happened to greeting customers, asking if they need help finding anything, or just being friendly? We started shopping here because they had the best prices on Brew Pub Lotzza Motzza pizzas. Then my last order, they forget to load the pizzas with our order. Then expect us to drive back? Last week had 8 items out of stock with no substitution. A month ago we had been given some bad chicken, (actually had an odor) which we had to drive back to exchange. I remember Jewel from my Northwest Chicago suburb living days. It's one of those places I missed when I moved to Indiana but I was pleasantly surprised a few years ago to discover this particular Jewel open in Chesterton. Now they don't have the best prices in town but one thing they are good for is their sales which is pretty much what I take advantage of. Customer service at the register is usually nice and I like that they hire special needs folks as part of their staff. I definitely do shop here every so often and anticipate continuing to do so. read more

Dear Jewel Covid is now at higher rates in Indiana than May. The signs mandating masks in the store are suspiciously small and easily missed. Customers are running around without masks and no employee stops them. The wipes for carts are often empty. All said, it appears Jewel is taking less active precautions than during the lockdown. I have no idea why the parent corporation is tolerating lax, common sense public health measures. read more

Jewel is okay. Pretty big selection of food for a small-town grocery store. Prices really seem to fluctuate... and maybe just some things are really reasonable and some are ridiculously expensive. Some great, friendly, helpful staff (the freezer stocker, one produce guy, & a kid named Joey); some not so much. The store manager is very friendly and greets me every time he's there. I asked another manager to help me in self-checkout once, because the machine didn't "sense" the coupon I put in... And she told me (in an uninterested rush) to "just go blow into it". Excuse me?! Anyhow, bottom line... okay mix of ethinic foods for a small town grocery, okay selection of vegetarian specialty stuff, none of the fancy vegan stuff, and a small amount of organic/health stuff. I am sad about this review actually......a year ago I would have given an easy 5 star rate. I live in town and I have an extreme dislike of Strack and Van Tills... so I choose Jewel, most of the time. I have never minded paying a little more, because the produce selection was always GREAT.....now however the last few months it's been full of rotten corn, wilted veggies, and over priced dented apples....soft and green potatoes that are priced at premiums. I used to LOVE just walking around and looking at all the fresh produce....now it seems only the most expensive organic veggies are edible...and really they dont even look great. I have realized that I usually do my shopping on Mondays, Fridays, Sundays, and during the daytime most of the time. It has been well over 6 months since I went in and was happy with all the produce. The reason they get 3 stars and not 1 star is because their meat and butchery is excellent. I have pre-ordered multiple items and always been happy with quality and price. Also, the employees who do the stocking are always super friendly, and know how to help. I do wish some of the cashiers were a bit friendlier.....but they are usually young, and or very busy....so i let rudeness slide. Hopefully, this is just a phase of restructuring and they will be back to delish produce, and quality ingredients for good prices. read more

Previously, I would have ranked this store quite high. Not any more. Ever since they went to an outside vendor for their home delivery service, I have been getting bad service routinely. I am disabled and have to have water, as well as other heavy groceries, brought into my living room, not left outside. No steps and maybe 5 feet more over the threshold and it would be fine. Instead I get churlish respones when I ask them to place the heaviest items inside my door. One older delivery guy actually stopped, glared at me, and said "Are ya gonna tip me?" And I replied that I couldn't as I was on a fixed income. His response? "Then forget it" and stormed out the front door. The same guy just came and left my groceries outside in the hall again, and then actually ran out the door to get away. As if that wasn't bad enough, the last time I had delivered groceries from this store, about $15 items were missing, but not deducted from my receipt. And to add insult to injury, about once a month I buy a bag of chips for myself as they are expensive. Some p***k carefully slit open the top of the product bag, carefully inverted it in the plastic delivery bag, and added a few small things around it to hide what they'd done. When I pulled the bag out in my living room, the chips flew all over. So, crippled up as I am, I had to try and get all of that cleaned up before doing anything else. My advice to anyone in the Chesterton area would be to avoid deliveries from the Jewel-Osco. They are just a disaster. Besides, their prices suck if you're just buying for a single person. Meijer is nuch better. Screw Jewel. We don't need them in Chesterton any more. read more

The rudest employees ever! My husband asked where the carts were and the employee said by the door. My husband explained we looked but didn't find any and employee said they must be all in use. How about baskets asked my husband. Employee said they didn't have any. When asked a different employee about where the peppers were, they said somewhere over there, and then said I guess I'll show you. I worked in customer service and I would have went to grab a customer a cart/basket and showed them where the peppers are not just say somewhere over there. read more

Pricey, and the selection is very small. They try to get way too many things in the store so you are limited in variety. They have alot of different things, but only carry a brand or 2 of each type of item. The store layout is weird, 2 seperate drink aisles instead of one long one and stuff like that. Meat section is tiny with little variety. Half the meat section devoted to expensive healthy stuff, so good luck finding something cheap, flavorful and the type you are looking for. read more

Chesterton's lucky to have a new (built 2002) Jewel store. It was even better when it was 24 hours. Basically all the shelves are usually full, the prices are competitive, and the store is super clean. The fact that they built a little nature area off to the side of the parking lot, is cool too. read more

Of the two grocery stores in Chesterton this is the better but Jesus Christ, is it a pain shopping here. It's not the prices or even the selection but, like K-Mart across the street, it is nigh impossible to check out of here without wanting to rip out your own hair in frustration. What few lanes are open, even at peak times, are staffed by the least motivated workers in the history of work and make what could be a mildly bad situation worse. This is why to do the bulk of my shopping I drive 30 miles to the nearest Costco where their check-out setup is a marvel of modern engineering. I can't help but wonder if the blissful shopping experience at Costco doesn't have something to do with the industry leading high wages they pay their staff? read more

I shop here every week and I do believe that it has the best selection of food in the area but that's not saying a lot, I still continue to have bad experiences every week and might have to start going elsewhere. I buy my meat from the butcher and if you don't watch exactly what they are doing they will make a mistake. I had a large order of meat today and when I got home several of the items were wrong, wrong weights and wrong meats, urrgg. Then When I checked out I asked if they could please use paper bags instead of plastic and the grocery bagger snapped at me and said "don't you think that is something you should have mentioned sooner", I literally just started loading items. Overall poor service and rude staff, it's a shame but it could be a lot better read more

I have been going to this store for about 4 years now. Sometimes they lack certain organic/specialty items but I have noticed that lately it's been a lot better. They carry an organic version of LOTS of different items. It's the store brand O, Organics. Some are better quality than others but at least there is an organic option. They don't ever seem to have fresh basil and sometimes organic mushrooms and tomatoes are scarce, but they fill my needs for organic foods. I like their produce section. They have dragonfruit, rambutans, papayas, and even those big ugly fruit things I'm not adventurous enough to buy. They have a great selection of kombucha/ACV drinks. They carry Organic Valley products which I really like as well. The deli rotisserie chickens are delicious and the people that work there at the counter I have found to be very friendly and busy. They also have a Starbucks inside the store and everyone there is so nice. I sort of don't understand the negative reviews. I'm not really sure what some of the other reviewers were looking for from a grocery store in a small town. Oh yeah, I can even fill my prescriptions here! I was just at this location and noted several food items that were on my grocery list were expired by months. Particularly, I could not find a larger container of Sour Cream that had not expired in May 2015 (it is currently July 2015). Several of the cans of soup were also expired. The clerk at the check out line did not seem terribly concerned about sale of these items and rung them up regardless of me telling him they were no good (I subsequently made hem take them off my bill). A manager later made a call to the dairy department to have them check the sour cream for containers that expired over 4 months ago. I am very concerned someone will get terribly sick. read more
