Drinks were amazing! Would definitely return to just go to the bar for drinks if ever in the area. Wait staff was also very pleasant and extra accommodating to our dog. Now why the 3 stars? The kitchen was severely backed up and we were given no warning when we got there for our 6:30 reservation. We were immediately seated and ordered and didn't get our entrees until after 8p. Once received, it was all severely overcooked, even the salmon ordered for the dog (which he normally loves and refused to eat). However, the appetizer we ordered was pretty decent (bread and meatballs). Hopefully this was just an off night for them but it really pushed back our night and travel plans as we were only traveling through. read more

Great ambiance and service! The food was also to die for! I had the pork chop with brussel sprouts, and mashed potato. The brussel sprouts has little bits of tasty bacon in them, and the mustard sauce on the pork chop was very good!! I drove from Michigan City and thought it was absolutely worth it! I love that it's next to a forest. The inside is so spacious, modern, clean, and beautiful. I love how it's a grocery store, and bought local honey. Lots of people at the bar, and not many in dining room on a weekday. All of the food was a nice portion and beautifully presented. The spinach artichoke and bread with marinara were both so yummy!! The pot pie was way too salty, and was hoping for more crust. It had none on the inside. It was more of a soup. The slider burger app was delicious. The salmon entree was good, and I liked how it came with wilted spinach, however, the entire dish was also extremely salty. The schnitzel was great! The kids menu has only 3 choices, and not super healthy or interesting, so we had to get them entrees. I wish they had a better kids menu. The server was friendly and attentive. A one and done for us. We sat for a long time at the bar before anyone even offered to take at least a drink order. We had a charcuterie board. I never thought I'd be unimpressed with one of these as they normally have an excellent, tasty assortment. There was an assortment, but nothing was tasty. We have passed this place many times and it is often busy. I guess their location helps as it is good for those local and the Illinois folks rolling back and forth through LaPorte & Porter Counties. We had high hopes returning to this restaurant for lunch, having enjoyed a pleasant dinner here in the past--but unfortunately, this visit was a letdown in nearly every category. SERVICE: When we arrived, we stood at the host stand for about 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, despite the restaurant being very quiet (only three other tables were occupied). After being seated, it took 35 minutes for our food to arrive. Given how few diners were present, the delay was baffling. FOOD: We ordered the Goblin Burger (requested medium-well) and the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich, along with cups of the soup of the day, which was clam chowder. The soup arrived quickly but was disappointing. It was thin and watery--not a traditional New England chowder--and only filled about two-thirds of a small bowl. While it had a decent flavor and some clams, the clams felt like an afterthought. The Goblin Burger was cooked medium-rare at best, rather than the medium-well we asked for. The fries were limp and lacked crispness. The schnitzel sandwich had a nicely crispy cutlet, but it was drenched in sauce, making it messy and hard to eat. Both meals came with a pickle that was so mushy it was completely inedible. PRICE vs VALUE: We were also disappointed by the pricing. The menu clearly stated that soup could be added to an entrée for $4, but we were charged $6 each. When we questioned it, the server told us the $4 rate only applies when substituting soup for fries. However, the menu clearly states it's an add-on (see photo of menu), not a substitution, and we had both the soup and the fries. BOTTOM LINE: Despite our previous good experience here, this lunch visit fell short across the board. From the undercooked burger and soggy fries to the misleading soup charge and lackluster service, we left feeling frustrated and underwhelmed. Sadly, we won't be returning. read more

We found some last minute reservations on Open Table for Goblin & The Grocer after a long day at the beach - they do not take walk-ins. I loved the decor, especially the black and white chairs and tables. They have both indoor and outdoor seating - we let them choose for us and ended up indoors. The food received mostly positive reviews from family. My husband enjoyed his chicken schnitzel, my son thought the salmon was "the best he's ever had," and my daughter enjoyed her burger. The littlest even liked the pb&j - they made it with nice soft white-ish bread! My meal was perhaps the downfall - I ordered Hampton Summer Pasta, as I do not eat meat. The vegetables were fresh and tasty, but the pasta was overcooked and quite bland. The garlic bread was soggy. It was a basic meal that could have been much better with a few minor improvements. My drink, Michigan Mule, was also just okay. Our server was friendly with a smile, but we only saw her a few times. We changed my son's drink order and they forgot, but the server did not return to the table for nearly a half hour so we could ask about it. The food took a very long time and once it arrived we again did not see the sever until the end of the meal. Prices are inflated because it's a place for tourists. I am happy to pay for quality food, but in this case, portions of the meal were overpriced - like the eleven dollar "bread board" that had a standard little loaf of bread that one might get free at another restaurant - served with butter and marinara. The $10 mini toffee banana cream pie was worth it though - so delicious! Ultimately, this was a decent dinner stop that could be improved upon, but it served our family well and most left happy with their meals. read more

I'm glad we visited Goblin & The grocer while visiting the Indiana Dunes NP. The ambiance is great and we were very comfortable. We don't recall the exact names of our entrees but we enjoyed most of it. The burgers are juicy and satisfying. The clam chowder had good flavor. The charcuterie was a crowd-pleaser and we wished we could have had more. The only disappointment was the zucchini noodle "zoodles" and salmon dish. The salmon was excellent but the dish had a lot of moisture from the zoodles in the bottom of the bowl. It had good flavor but the zoodles texture was too soft and soggy. Do try the sodas here; they're very enjoyable! read more

Had high hopes as Goblin & The Grocer acted as an inviting beacon of warmth on a cold March day. Upon arrival the outside and inside decor of the establishment was welcoming. The staff wasn't overly welcoming which I typically appreciate but things became unpleasant when the food arrived. My guest and I had decided that the day would be become a soup day given the tumultuous weather and menu options. We eagerly ordered the tomato (described as creamy) and French onion soup. The French onion soup arrived table side at perfect temperature but the tomato required extra reheating. No drama just disappointment. Stopped in for dinner with our kids and our friends and their kids- so we were a group of 4 adults and 4 kids- we were a handful! We were seated outside on the patio. The server was very sweet and accommodating given the wild ones we had with us, and she had lots of patience. I must say that I did not have high expectations for a restaurant in Northwest Indiana, but this is one of the more memorable places I visited on a recent return to Chicago. Of course the pleasantness of this whole part of the lakeshore adds to the experience, but this place fits right in, making it feel much more like the Californian experiences of beachside afternoons ending in a perfect New American-style dinner than I would have ever thought possible in this region, which as a native, I do not consider "beachy" even on beach days. The spicy mussels were the highlight. I love classic mussels offerings, but they always leave me disappointed with their distinct lack of spice and excessively buttery quality. Wine selections were great, especially the two Croatian wines (what a great wine country! I wish more places offered their stuff, but I guess it's harder to get a hold of). Cocktail I ordered was a bit weird, but I guess I should have known: an "iced coffee" with rum had a really odd taste to it. Somehow I was thinking (despite the clarity of the menu) that it would be more of an espresso-lemonade kind of thing, but that's me, perhaps. Sympathize a lot with the one server at the bar who seemed a bit slammed, this despite a burly supervisor kind of just lumbering about the bar, not doing all that much. read more

Just outside the national parks campground, this place is a gem! Because there are no hook-ups at the campground, we decided we would keep the dirty dishes down and hit the local restaurants. This was our first place. We called ahead and they weren't asking for reservations for 4:00 PM; we were glad of that. It was half-price wine bottle night which is every Monday. We had the Spain "Castle of Witches," a white, which are my wife's favorite. It was delicious. However, paired with my "Seaworthy Ceviche" and my wife's "Tuna Nicoise Salad," we had a great meal. My wife said it was the best Tuna Nicoise Salad she's ever had and would love to have the recipe for the creamy dill dressing. I wasn't ready to leave yet, (outside air temps still above 80, which is a bit too warm at the campsite), we had the "Baklava Cheesecake." My wife and I both love baklava but are so-so on cheesecake. But it was delicious also and a nice way to finish the dregs of the witches wine. The atmosphere is casual, the bathrooms are clean and well-stocked, and our server, Heather, was superb. I think the key to enjoying Goblin is to call ahead and come early before they need to make you a reservation, but don't let that stop you from coming and trying the place out! read more

Lovely food, lovely service, fantastic patio! The food here is legit, the chicken sandwich and their burgers were fantastic. My girlfriend and I also had their soup of the day, a tomato basil soup. The ingredients were all very natural and "never frozen", definitely on the gourmet end of the spectrum. This would be a 5 star review but the parking situation and price/value were slight detractors. The parking lot was not laid out well, and it was a little dicey not just for my party but also others in the lot. Our party of 6 arrived at 7:15 for a 7:15 reservation. We waited 15 minutes to be seated outside. We waited 20 minutes before being brought water. When we ordered drinks, one of us ordered a glass of white wine. The server returned 15 minutes later with the drinks minus the white wine. We reminded her, and she returned with a glass of red wine. We sent it back. She came back 5 minutes later to ask again what the drink was supposed to be. We finally got the glass of white 30 minutes after we had ordered drinks. When the appetizers finally came, one of them, the ninja bowl, came without the sriracha aioli mayo dressing. We asked for dressing to be brought out. Ten minutes later we asked again, and 5 minutes after that we were brought a container of plain mayo. As an aside/warning, at about 8:30pm a swarm of mosquitoes descended on the patio. We and everyone else who were eating outside moved inside at that time. Prior to the mosquitoes, two of us ordered another drink, and after 20 minutes of waiting, one of us finally went up to the bar and was able to get our drinks immediately. At about 9:15 I approached the owner at the far end of the bar (while her servers were clearly struggling). I said, "We've been here two hours and haven't gotten our entrees yet." She looked towards the kitchen and said "They're coming out now, I see them." I went back to the table and we ate. It was fine--not great--though we were all hungry and annoyed. Presumably having been told that we were annoyed, the server now came several times to ask about refills (for the first time all night) and so we asked for the check--which came right away, with nothing comped. Then the owner came to the table, ostensibly to apologize, but mostly to give a passive-aggressive justification for the service. "I checked the timing," she said to me, "and you waited 40 minutes, not two hours. I about fell over when you said two hours. But 40 minutes is still too long and I apologize." I said, "What I said was that we had arrived two hours ago and still didn't have our entrees." She then said that they assume that people are here on vacation and want a leisurely pace, and that we should have let them know if that wasn't the case for us... Sorry, but it's not our job to tell you we want industry-standard service. If you wanted to tell us when we arrived, "Welcome, you're going to wait two hours for your entrees unless you want them sooner," we would have found that strange, but we would have then understood the situation. She then asked what she could do to make it right. Here's some hopefully constructive feedback: Don't ask your poorly served clients what you can do to make it right. Just go ahead and make it right--apologize in a sincere way and comp what you think is reasonable to comp in proportion to the screw-up. People feel uncomfortable asking for free stuff, especially when you're trying to gaslight them into thinking they're the ones who are uptight and have unreasonable expectations. And don't make disingenuous excuses. This is not Key West; it's the Midwest, and whether they're on vacation or not, people expect to be served correctly and in a reasonable amount of time. read more

Date night turned into a disappointing experience that cost some $$$. Parking: We had tons of trouble parking. The main lot is small and a tiny sign we almost missed says there is parking across the street. Not easy...very few spots, people parking wonky and then a 10 minute wait to try to cross the highway to get back to the restaurant. Decor: The decor nice and felt fresh. There was a nice outdoor patio, lots of plants and cute seating arrangements. Food: I ordered a salad with a grilled chicken breast which felt fairly simple and hard to mess up. It was $18 so I had high expectations. The lettuce was wilted, the chicken was a very small portion. It had 5 cherry tomato halves, and 5-6 slivered almonds...nothing else but lettuce. There did not appear to be any dressing. It was so dry and bitter and a little dressing would have at least made it editable. Service: Here's the really disappoint part. When I asked our waitress if I could get some dressing she told me there was some already on it and then rolled her eyes at me when I asked for more. She did bring me a very, very small amount of dressing and then avoided our table for most of the meal. We were easy customers-- we didn't ask her to refill our water or for anything else and the only thing she had done for us was to take our order and bring us our food. And after the eye-roll, we just wanted to get out of there. She did finally come back and ask if I needed more dressing after my husband was done with his mediocre burger.
