We're in the midst of a much-needed societal awakening. Increased consciousness, understanding, and empathy for underrepresented and minority populations is taking place. I was in Chicago for 9 days and wanted to cruise some of the old neighborhoods that I used to run in the 1970's. Most areas are in the midst of gentrification. This Jewel store is not. It's too far from Hyde Park and not close enough to be in the brown stone districts. The store seems to be trying very hard to take care of customers. I stopped in and checked out the deli. The staff was very pleasant and was keeping order very well. I say that because there was a line waiting for the fried chicken specials at the store. It has to be great, when I see 8 people in line waiting for the batch to come up from the grease. I commend Jewels for having this store and keeping it clean! read more

Soooo I just ordered from you guys through Instacart. One of the items I ordered was Vienna corned beef. I love Vienna Corned beef! It has a specific flavor that no other corned beef has! It's also hella expensive. However, I was charged Vienna pricing ($13.99 a pound) for what was NOT Vienna corned beef. Maybe somehow the tags were mixed up but I am 100% sure that wasn't Vienna corned beef. I wanted to check out this new Jewel which is a little longer to get to than the 75th street one but I had to see if it was worth the risk. Being right outside the U of C may explain the diversity, rather than it being 'in the hood' as Naiima D. posited. There were samples of a new barbecue sauce when we were there; it's a good sign when stores offer samples but it can create a traffic jam. The variety was good and there was a register in the liquor department! Is it so when buying just booze you dont have to stand behind someone with 500 grocery items, or because some cashiers are under 21 and cant sell booze without a manager? Never mind, I like the idea. The layout was ok but hard to navigate and there should be more room between the registers and the aisles, but otherwise it was fine. Brand new Jewel Osco. This place is phenomenal and its great to finally have a local super market to go too since the closest thing at the time was Treasure Island which was pretty expensive and a bit of a distance and I wasn't trying to go in the city really or crossing the 94 highway. Inside Jewel Osco it's really clean. The atmosphere is friendly. There's a very friendly vibe here and the people that are probably shopping here for the first time are in awe about how there's a grocery store in their city. The prices are very good. It's almost like paying for food in the suburbs outside of the city. Parking is great too. Definitely reccomend! read more

After several years' worth of trips here, my increasingly negative experiences at this Jewel have led me to update my review. I maintain that the selection is good--better than any other grocer in the Hyde Park/Woodlawn area--although, since the opening of the nearby TJ's, I've realized their prices aren't. My main issue with this location, though, is the simply nonexistent customer service. I've had some of the cashiers check out what I've bought, bagged it, and processed my payment without saying a single "hello," "good bye," or "how are you?". A few have even straight-up refused to answer questions I've directly asked of them. Given the already chaotic atmosphere both in- and outside the store, all of this makes you think twice about shopping here. This is in many ways a shame, since I think they're trying to make a positive impact on the community overall. read more

Hello Jewel-Osco Customers, Majority of my transactions are curbside pick up. I have shopped in the store, but due to my busy schedule I shop online. Let me tell you, Frazier's GREAT! Why? Because he follow the notes I attach with each order and he cares about our food. My fruits are ALWAYS fresh! I have never received molded fruit. The expiration dates are always up to date on my milk, eggs & cheeses products. Meat too. I alwaysssssssssss have the exact quantities for the weekly deals. Getting my money worth. Soooooo, one way in and one way out....hmmmm? Let me say that this Jewel's is definitely serving a huge need. However, it gets crowded at random times of the day. The aisles are rather narrow. They seem to re-stock all day long, which makes navigating the store pretty rough. Their fresh vegetables are definitely a plus. Really dont have a vegan section, which sucks. When this store first opened it was great! So many varieties of items that other stores did not have. Now there's empty shelves and lazy workers! My cashier had the longest line with full baskets and she was bagging by herself! Next register over not the express lane had smaller line and fewer items and there was someone helping to bag 3 items! This poor girl...I helped put my own items away. There is a reason some of us don't use self checkout! A woman in front of me was elderly and sitting in one of those carts. Do you know she had to get her own stuff! Ordered grocery pickup. Delayed for 2 hours. Had to physically enter store to see if I would be able to get my grocery. It was 10 min before the 8pm cutoff. I wasn't able to get my grocery until after 8:30.. Also no parking in drive up and go. Manager fake concern was even more insulting. After finally getting a park. I had to call again to which I was told the "the lady" disappeared. Mind you. I am the lady. That's been waiting over an hr now. Had to wait til next day to report $90 worth of items missing. The manager then tried to make me out to be a liar because no one was communicating. I told him I would come to the store and he said no to because he would refund me. Never saw refund had to contact the main customer service line. Now I have to wait 3-5 business days. What if that was all I had. I'm so disgusted with this location. read more

I love that this Jewel is here, bringing a full service supermarket to Woodlawn and Hyde Park. Good news - Jewel is the only store in the area that stocks lots of sugar free products - - like no sugar added really good ice cream (Breyers and Rebel). Bad news - when I shopped there last week, there were no wipes for the cart handles and no hand sanitizer anywhere! Come on! Protect the staff who are there way longer than we customers are! Rude, racist, ignorant, ugly. How can you have expired items within a few weeks of opening? The woman working today sneezed on the meat that she was cutting for another customer in the deli. I watched as if in slow motion as the snot and spittle landed on the maple honey turkey. Meanwhile four other women stood around and talked about what a loser the boyfriend of one of them is, while a line of 20 or more people waited for wings. I asked one employee if I could speak to the manager, and he looked at me funny, scratched his head, and said, "manager?" As if the idea had not occurred to him that perhaps the store has a manager. This would be an ideal place to shop, in the neighborhood, walking distance, etc. But it isn't. Some of the people that work there are horrible, have no awareness of how to work with the public, etc. The store doesn't stock sugar free soda, they specialize in junk, sugary food (it's always the most affordable), and when the store substitutes for out of stock items, the prices are not for the similar sizes or quantities. Shameful that every single time that I shop here I encounter at least one rude, unprofessional staff. Each time, I have voice my complaint to the supervisor or manager and often that has been a poor exchange. I understand that almost all of the staff have been hired from the community and unfortunately it shows. The store manager even shrugged his shoulders when I told him I was cursed by a deli worker who handled my food improperly. In addition, they are often out to stock on sale items days after the sale starts. Although convenient, I try to avoid the drama of this poorly managed store. read more

First I would like to thank Mr Sparks for his fast and personal response. I called in about a complaint and about an hr later decided to give it a chance. This rating doesn't reflect Mr Sparks, because he was actually calling me while I was in the store and met me at the service desk. He was very nice, polite and understanding, amazing and made me feel like a valued customer as I've been shopping at jewels for over 40 yrs. Mr Sparks addressed my concerns and I felt he was sincere into looking into the issue. Brandon the cashier was really sweet, funny and made the unprofessional and rude behavior I'd just experienced at the deli not sting so much. The other manager should be replaced and I don't know if Mr Sparks is the replacement, but here we go. I'd worked for consumer reports and I understand about pleasing the customer and supplying good product. I went to get my usual (2) 12 pc grilled signature chef and was hoping the previous manager, that gave me a million excuses on the reason for the nasty customer service and subpar food. Some may say, just give it up and get something else. I shouldn't have to when there's a change in a product due to whatever reason. Anyways, I just got a 12pc(which Mr Sparks compensated) a 2pc meal, Hawaiian buns and potato salad. It was looking a little rough and a customer and I stood there for a minute and she decided to get the fried. When I got home and ate a piece my stomach was hurting a little and I overlooked it. Later that night I decided to put it in the oven and let it cook a little longer due to when I was breaking open the thigh it was a bit pink. About 11pm I ate a breast and some potato salad. Within about 15 minutes I started to get nauseous, extremely sweaty, stomach cramping and I'll leave it at that. It's 10:40am and I'm doing better. I just hope Mr Sparks and the rest of the jewels look into this. It's being rushed, because more people are buying it and they're trying to get it out. That's not good enough, because I got sick from it and the rest is just wasted. At this point I don't even know if I want to go to jewels anymore. read more

NEVER COME HERE! I've been waiting for over a hour for grilled chicken from the deli. The young women in the back decided to fill a order twice while having me wait on 5 grilled chicken wings. When I asked for a supervisor I was ignored by Elizabeth in the deli. I spoke with Lori Walsh and was told just 5 mins per the Deli Manager ok fine and now 10 mins later still nothing. This is a new store and my first time at this location and this is the worst customer service and most unprofessionalism of meeting people needs ever I've experience at any Jewel Osco location in Chicago. Especially when the young ladies that work at the deli are laughing Sharnice and Elizabeth as if it is a joke. While both ladies still customers 15 more mins for grilled chicken. I live near the area and I thought I didn't need to drive to Wabash and Roosevelt where I usually go but this is why I shop OUTSIDE the neighborhood, rudeness, lack of customer care and time quality.
