One of the things I want to eat on this road trip is really good BBQ, and my husband suggested this restaurant. He had been a customer all his life before moving to California, and my brother-in-law grew up on this place. We ordered the mixed meat plate, half rack of baby back ribs and the pulled pork sandwich, all with curly fries. My favorite meats were the fall-off-the-bone ribs and the brisket! Everything was lean and smoky. The plates came with a fresh bun, beans and coleslaw. They were not "wow" but delicious nonetheless. I liked the sauce so much that I bought some to bring home. The restaurant itself is super tiny and homey. Since we have our dogs, I got the order to-go while he waited at his family's place. Everything was packed nice and tight, resulting in zero leakage! Overall, I am not sure we will be back as we are only in town a couple days, but I definitely will keep it in rotation for future visits. The last time we came here to eat we parked in the back lot and had to walk up the staira. This time we parked in the handicapped spot and we're shocked to see that the front door is even with the parking lot. There is a small hill but you can push a wheelchair or walk with a walker or cane without issues. There is a daily lunch menu that ends at 3pm. We got here at 2:26 so we were able to save some money too. My husband and I both ordered the brisket sandwich. I ordered mine without BBQ sauce and added some yellow mustard (tomatoes really cause my arthritis pain to increase) I was very happy to see that the sauce is added afterwards. You get to pick a potato from a list of options... I picked a baked potato with sour cream and butter and my husband picked the curly fries. You also get to pick baked beans or coleslaw, we both selected Cole slaw. It was a vinger based coleslaw which we love! We ordered a corn muffin and it was huge and moist (not dry at all). The restaurant is very clean and you feel like your in a cabin. The temperature outside is 90+ and it was very comfortable here .. in the low 70's for sure. This is a nice casual place to have lunch or to celebrate a special occasion with family and friends. Lots of great food options they even have soup and salads on the menu. went here about a week ago to get some ribs and I was offered great customer service! I've moved to northern illinois region and this place has been around for longer I've been alive for. BB ribs are definitely my favorite. I remember sitting down for an order one time and overhearing someone talking about a drain clog? He was very loud about that. The people who write all these reviews are the typical Eric cartman (overweight) food critics that tend to over exaggerate details based on a single experience. The menu items do not really change, the food changes sometimes but it's expected... When you look up the texan website you can see the owners are stuck in the 80s. Taking place in a victorian house, the texan's walls are almost yellow from age and barbecue smoke- it smells like barbecue when you go in there for sure. My food recommendations? If you hate dry meats, definitely the pork ribs, the rib tips (pork riblets), and the prime rib. Sandwiches/dinners are based on how much meat you want. The cornbread is delicious. The funnel cakes are made year-round so you don't have to wait for a parking lot carnival to get one. Coleslaw, BBQ beans, curly fries seem to be popular. The brisket has been great, and the bbq sauce is definitely something I could drink out their glass bottles lol. read more

Strike one: no smokey wafts in restaurant, parking lot or in the taste of ribs and brisket; hence no true smoked meats. Used to be a go-to spot for me, many years ago when I worked in Hoffman Estates. Was traveling through the area, and for nostalgic purposes thought I'd stop by for a late lunchtime meal. The inside looked exactly like I'd remembered, and the smells came rushing back as soon as I opened the door. I went with my favorite BBQ meat combo...ribs and brisket rounding it out with sides of cole slaw, baked beans and potato salad. The platter also came with a standard dinner roll on the side. I think maybe my foodie tastes have matured over time because although it was decent, it was definitely not what I recalled as superior 'que. The ribs were a bit too much fall-off-the-bone, would have preferred to have to "work" at getting the meat off. The brisket was almost shaved it was so thin, leading to it losing temp heat very quickly. I used to love their tangy Texas style sauce, and that definitely did not change...same great flavor! Sides were good, cole slaw is the chopped style with a creamy and tangy bite, baked beans had slight sweetness and potato salad was made redskin potatoes. First time visit in over 30 years and now I remember why's it's been 30 years! I had the BBQ brisket sandwich. Bun was about 4" diameter, a few slices of meat loaded with very sweet sauce. Meat was tender but was not "smoked" nor could I taste any seasoning. $13.99 with the side of beans. Beans were average. Crinkle cut fries were fine but were extra. Small coke was $3.50. 1 of the WORST BBQ places I've been from food to service. 1, there was a seemingly eaten bone in my to go ribs. I guess the cook was hungry! My parents have been raving about this place for months now and I'm so happy that my schedule finally aligned with theirs to come try this place out! Definitely come here if you are hungry for a warm, hearty bbq meal. I had the pulled pork sandwich off the lunch special and opted for cole slaw and curly fries as my sides. The price was right and the meal was delicious! I'm a huge classic film nerd, so I was happy to see homage paid to various classic western stars by the decorations in the dining area. I also enjoyed the nice variety of homemade bbq sauces they had but the mild was my favorite. As delicious as all of that was, oh man, the Sprecher's root beer really hit the spot as the perfect drink to go with my meal. I ordered an assortment of items from Texan BBQ today and spent over $200 dollars on ribs, tips, sausage, and burgers. This was a poor choice. When the ribs arrived, they were literally over cooked bones. I am very pissed about this. This place has received high praise from so many other reviews I read. However, when it came to my food, it was just about inedible. I later drive an hour each way to another BBQ place and spent another $85.00 on what I hoped to get at Texan bbq. We hadn't been here in a while, since before covid , they were always good but I swear they got better. My boyfriend and I decided to go here for date night, we wanted to eat out but go some where more casual. You order at a walk up window before you sit down, they give you a number and then you find a table. For a Saturday night at 630ish, it was easy to find a spot to sit. The server brought the food out right away, super fast! We order the breef brisket meal and a pull pork sandwich along with a lemonade vodka cocktail and Corona (I do appreciate that this place has adult beverages). The cocktail was great! The lemonade was most likely freshly made that day, I couldn't taste the vodka at all but definitely got a nice buzz from the drink. The food was definitely five star. The brisket was juicie and the perfect amount of smoke flavor. The sauce paired perfectly. The sandwich was also very juicie and tasty. There is so much meat on the bun that you could eat the meat by itself and leave enough to eat on the sandwich...kinda like a second meal. And the curely fries were on point , nice and crispy with perfect seasoning. This place is perfect for big groups as there are plenty of 6 top plus tables, and because you pay before you sit, you don't have to worry about the hassle of splitting the bills. I noticed you can rent out space for a private event so I may even consider doing that in the future. I've lived close by to the Texan BBQ for 4+ years. When I first moved in 4+ years ago, we patronized the place often. You also always used to smell the BBQ. However, we finally stopped going in there. It became obvious liquid smoke was being used. At $20+ a plate, I expect authentic barbecue. The quality of ingredients has gone down too. The Sysco truck comes weekly, so that can give you an idea of the quality. Everything is doused in a vinegar-heavy "BBQ" sauce to mask the liquid smoke and lower quality meat. It's unfortunate as we like to patronize local business. However, the last few visits they stared at me the entire time from the second I walked in - until I left. I have a physical disability. The last time I decided I was done with it. Their attitude is also not worth $20+ a plate. It makes me very uncomfortable. Therefore, I spend my money where I don't feel like I'm not welcome or wanted. Plenty of people have prosthetic legs. There's no reason to stare me down when I'm patronizing your business. This problem stems from the top down. They're living off their name and past legacy. Furthermore, there is very few offerings for true BBQ around. People will settle for food-service grade cafeteria food and not blink paying $20. It is very perplexing. Return to quality meat, actually smoking the meat, buns, sides, etc. Everything tastes like it came off the Sysco truck- because it did. I watch them deliver. The only exception is likely that vinegar heavy sauce they think is "BBQ sauce". There's no way any reputable company would produce something that foul. It is not worth the price charged whatsoever. I'll let you in on a secret: the real rib sandwich. It's all the rib meat, pulled off and thrown into a bun with grilled onions. I mean, unless you're into eating the meat straight from the bone or just like having bones around, paying for bones, throwing bones in the garbage while you stare unblinkingly at your neighbor's house, why, WHY wouldn't you just get the same delicious meat slapped on a sammie? Ask for extra sauce if you want to end up messy, but you probably won't even need it, it's still BBQ. That sauce and the seasoned curlies are what dreams are made of, and if you happen to be dining in, get over to the soda fountain and place your face under the spout to gorge yourself on the glory that is Green River. They usually have bottles of Dog n' Suds root beer as well, so they've got the local soda game pretty well represented. Honestly, all you need to know about the food here you can learn by standing outside and inhaling. That meat is smoked and you will love it. Mediocre meat (brisket was sliced very thin and a pulled pork sandwich which was ok). Then the sides were laughable. We literally LOLed when they came out. Their Mac and cheese tasted like watered down Kraft boxed Mac and cheese (looked like it too, see photo). And their crinkle fries reminded me of bagged fries you cook in the oven. Today I had the pleasure of eating from their yearly thanksgiving offer...a complete Turkey dinner including the bird, homemade from scratch mashed potato with gravy, green beans, stuffing, dinner rolls and cranberries. The smoked turkey was moist and done perfectl. The mashed potatoes with added butter and salt were unbelievable. I love spuds prepared in almost any form and could be deemed a fair judge of the offering. These did not disappoint. This passable BBQ but nothing spectacular. The place mainly benefits from the fact that I live close and adore BBQ. However, since I originally hail from Kansas City to say that I am particular about BBQ would be a dramatic understatement. It will scratch the itch if your body is crying out for ribs and brisket like mine often does, but it won't be that memorable. If you blink you might miss the place located on Main. It is a house that they converted into a restaurant and they have been in business in Algonquin since the stone age from what I hear. The area is walkable though, so even if you have to park a block or so over on the street it is not that big of a deal. The best item on the menu by far is the beef ribs. They seriously do these up right and they will be falling off the bone on your plate. If I was basing this review upon ribs alone, it would be 5 stars with a bullet all day. They are sensational. Unfortunately the brisket, sausage, turkey and ham simply do not rise to this same level of splendor. Sides here like the cornbread, fries, baked beans, slaw, etc. are similarly nothing to get excited about. While this is highly subjective, I am also not a huge fan of the sauce here. It is of the sweeter and more molasses based variety, which is not to my particular preference. You might love it, but I prefer more vinegar based sauces myself. Overall, if you are in the mood for BBQ and are in the area, Texan is worth a stop in. Prices are fair and they don't skimp on portions, just don't set your expectations too high. read more
