Usually the Grandpa of the family who is in his 90's gathers the eggs and cleans them. The farm has stands at the Torrington Farmers' Market on Saturdays and at the Collinsville Farmers' Market on Sundays during the season. Recently Jack & I had the opportunity to take a tour of the grounds. The crop looked amazing. My favorite was a visit to the "chicken coop" which was a large room in a barn with an outdoor area. The stand is open every day 9AM-6:30PM from Memorial Day through December 31st, and Tuesday-Sunday 10AM-5:30PM from January 2nd to Memorial Day. From November through May, their CT Handmade Gift Shop is open and filled with beautiful creations made by local artists throughout the state. The directors of the program are genuine, authentic, salt-of-the-earth people, and I wholeheartedly recommend their various squashes, eggplants, tomatoes, and pickles. Delicious, flavorful, juicy, pure, wholesome, and sweet, and one of the things I miss most about working at the retreat center. While they do not use pesticides or conventional methods of IPM, the greens are surprisingly not as infested as you'd think, and with a proper washing process and bedikah, can be used for kosher consumption. If you live in the area, you owe it to yourself and your family to patronize these idealistic, trail-blazing Jewish farmers, who truly are changing the world, one pickle at a time.
