There have been times where they take care of something for me and didn't charge me, fixing a flat or a diagnosis, etc. They just take care of you. Quick, honest & fair. I almost never review businesses, but I will make an exception for Jim Barbey. Their honesty has saved us hundreds of not more. A recent example, after having electrical issues with our Chrysler T&C, Jim, after a thorough and lengthy inspection found the issue was the battery cables. I had previously replaced the power control module through another mechanic's recommendation, so to have the repair be something so routine was a major relief. Thanks Jim! read more

Update: Spoke to the shop owner Jim, and he completely changed my experience. I was quite upset at the service I received from some of his employees but Jim allowed me to state what my problem was without interrupting me which was something his employee was unable to do. He explained what their point of view was on this inspection and explained how he was intending for the process to go. I still have nothing good to say about his employees. They need to listen to the boss and perform adequate customer service. I may be back at a future date because of Jim Barbey himself. Hopefully, he has either trained his employees or gotten new employees when I decide to come back in. If you get bad service TALK TO JIM. he is a stand-up guy read more

Take your car to Jim Barbey Automotive for a fair and honest repair! If you like being overcharged for your car repair! Take your car to Koons white marsh! The repair pricing is way too high! I told the service manager not to do the job because of that. He quoted me $2600.00 for replacing the power steering pump and hose. That was way too much and I called an auto repair shop (Jim Barbey Automotive) (5 stars on Yelp) less than a mile away and he did the job for $1100.00 and he used genuine GM parts. Jim and his mechanics did a great job! I was very happy with the work they did! The dealership likes to rip people off. I still had to pay a diagnostic fee of $130.00 to Koons just to get my car back. So Koons still screwed me over. I was told by other people never take a car to a dealer for repair unless it was still under warranty. That is so true! read more

I am extremely upset and disappointed with my recent service here. My car is reaching the age where I should decide whether or not to replace it or to continue paying for maintenance and repairs. I took my car in for an oil change, squeaky brakes and the suspension. Since it had been a while since my car had been serviced, I also requested a general check-up throughout the vehicle. The diagnosis and repair estimate was almost $2000, but no major mechanical problems were found, so I gave the go-ahead, as my car would seemingly have decent life left after these repairs and so would be worth the service. I paid a little over $1900 and picked my car up the next day. When I picked it up and started driving it home, I immediately noticed that the engine felt a little strained as if it was struggling to run. The next day, immediately upon driving it, the engine had significant difficulty running and I immediately called and took it back into the shop and explained the whole situation. Within 5-10 minutes of testing it, I was told that my car is essentially finished- the lower motor was about to die and the car needed a new engine. I was quoted over $4,000 just for a used engine. I'm not an expert in cars, which is the whole reason I brought the car in. I wanted to determine if my car had enough life in it to justify spending more money on repairs. I understand that coincidences happen, but if a team is working on my car at that many points of repair and test drove it after all of the work was finished, I find it very hard to believe that no one saw or noticed this life-ending problem with the car, or that this occurred less than 24 hours later (not even 30 minutes actually driving the vehicle) after service was completed. I'm now out of a vehicle and the $1900 I spent to fix the car. read more

We are not from the White Marsh area, but our car broke down on the way to New York to participate in an Iron Man. We had time constraints because we had to check in the next day. We chose Jim Barbey because it was the closest shop when our car started acting up. Jim Barby was delightful, accommodating, honest and fair. If we lived close to him we would switch to him all the time. He went above and beyond to get the part our car needed, fixed our car in a timely manner (even though he had many other customers), and charged us a fair price! I recently had my 2001 f250 in this shop for an inspection and necessary repairs to pass. I already had all the body work done and a fresh paint job on the truck so this was the last step to get it on the road. It was my first time as a customer and was happy with how friendly the staff was at the front desk. The only complaints I have were mainly some quality control issues, as the most important suspension/steering repairs seem to be holding up well. The first problem I encountered was when I picked the truck up, the greasy handprint on my fresh door paint, and the door chime was staying on nonstop. Not a huge deal, I figured I knew what the problem was so I addressed it when I got home. They replaced my steering column and simply had grounded out a wire by crimping a floating style clip down which caused the constant chiming issue. I was pretty annoyed they sent it out the door that way as there was obviously a problem that had not previously existed. After fixing this, I noticed the gear shifter they installed was aftermarket. I was also missing the temperature adjustment knob on the dash, which I didn't know is necessary to pass state inspection. They ordered and charged me for a pack of 3, yet only replaced one. On top of this, it is not the correct knob for my truck. It is for the E-style Ford vans. So I have one new, non matching knob for the price of 3. I'll eat this cost once more from having to order the correct knob. On to the door panels, on one side it seems they lost a trim screw, so instead of replacing it with a proper style, it was replaced with a self tapper which was simply just resting in the hole, not holding the door panel to the door skin itself. On the passenger side, same issue but on top of no trim screw all of the bottom mounting tabs were snapped off so the door panel now flaps away easily from the door. I am aware the truck is a little old in age, but I had just had these door panels removed and re installed a couple days prior with no issue. They also left the rubber boots which conceal the wiring from the cab to the door just hanging on the wires and not pushed back into the door. On to the front of the truck....I needed one marker lamp replaced in each headlight, which unfortunately did not go well either. The driver side headlight was pulled clear off of the adjustment device, it appears they attempted to fix it judging by the grease on the ball end of the adjuster, but it wouldn't push back in so it was left that way, leaving the headlight pointing way too high up in the air. One of the headlight clips for the passenger headlight were lost, leaving that headlight pointing down towards the ground. Keep in mind, I paid for a headlight alignment as required by state inspection, which unfortunately got thrown out of alignment because I had to disassemble and reassemble the driver side headlamp in order to fix the broken adjuster. I am just now writing this review because I was just going to let it go, but had just noticed the problem with the door panels and had enough. As I stated previously, I do believe the major repairs have been done properly, but there does exist a major quality control issue. You will pay dealership prices for aftermarket and possibly incorrect parts. I dont believe I will return to this shop personally, I spent way too much money to have to take a few hours of my own time to finish and fix their work. read more
