I do most of my own auto repair, and am fairly particular about how it's done, so I am always cautious when I must take some work outside my own shop. I brought Jim an '86 El Camino into which I had put a '96 LT1 (SS Impala and low-end Corvette) engine and transmission. Some shops won't work on this kind of project, but Jim was willing, even though it seemed like he had plenty of other work. Another shop had replaced a couple of SMOG components, but had recommended that I needed to do work that didn't make sense to me and left one trouble code unrepaired. To make a long story short, Jim found a wiring error (by me . . . groan!) that the other shop had completely missed and when that was corrected, the engine started running exactly the way it should have and the trouble code was cleared. This revelation came only an hour of labor past the basic diagnostic fee. Don't tell Jim but after spending twice that amount at the previous shop, I would certainly have paid him more if he weren't an honest and competent businessman with a good head on his shoulders. Jim is not a one-man shop, but he's small enough to take personal interest in his customers and their vehicles. The next time I need any outside work, I know where I am going. read more

I found the shop to be very dishonest and quoted me a price of $700 for a repair that I ultimately paid $277 for at another shop. They highly inflated the labor cost. I paid almost $200 for the diagnosis then they said they would not even put that cost towards the repair. I would never ever recommend this shop to anyone and have actually told several people not to use them and they said they would night and will spread the word to other friends and family. First about me. I worked for the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) for 24 years. Most of my time with the BAR was in enforcement, regulating repair facilities. I have taken out several bad repair shops out in Northern California for fraud using undercover runs. Talk about honest! I have had great service the multiple times I have gone here. They could have totally gouged me when I went in for my 120K service, but instead they called me and told me what the issues were and gave me a choice about what I wanted to do. They could have charged me a lot, but instead they gave me an honest assessment even though it meant they would only be getting paid about 1/4th of what I would have paid originally when I came in for the service. I will be going back here whenever I need service and will gladly suggest them and have suggested them to others needing automotive service. read more

This shop is great! Probably the only shop I would ever recommend! The main tech has been a mechanic longer then I've probably been alive he knows what he is doing! When getting your AC serviced they give you a "worst case" quote. But what they don't tell you is they will drain all your AC fluid anyway and charge you to completely refill it. Get it done somewhere else or just do it yourself. read more

I spoke to Joan, the owner's wife who was very friendly and let me know she would call me with their diagnosis and an estimate before they started the work. We have been taking our cars to Jim Hansen auto repair now for about five years. We have come to trust Jim and his wife, Joan, and know that the price is always fair and that the service will be done carefully and thoroughly. This week it was a vibration in our 2003 Explorer that I thought might be a wheel bearing, but in fact was an indication that it needed brakes all around. My fault for not asking if I was going to get bent over backwards because i drove in for service in my 2005 Land Rover LR3, that has ohhhh 133,000 miles on it.. So my wife was visiting her mom at Kaiser Vacaville , and I asked her to take the car in for a required smog check, and oil change.. .Well, there is a reason I change the oil normally myself and this is why.. They charged $64.17 just for the nothing special castrol gtx oil... and $12.19 for a filter. luckily that only charged $7.75 for labor... Had I known that I was going to pay over $80.00 for a simple oil change, I would have just had them do the smog, I feel they took advantage of my wife, my truck never has needed more then 5.5 qts of oil during a change, and they charged my for 9 qts... I am pretty upset.. Again, I take responsibility for not asking them if they charge dealership prices for an oil change, at least Niello Landrover will wash the inside and outside of the car.... read more
