Started with Dr Mai after Kaiser wanted to do 6 hours of back surgery. Previously I had back surgery with Kaiser and as a result the pain was gone but I also lost muscle control in parts of both legs and feet, thus my refusal for additional surgery. I started with Dr Mai as a skeptic seeing him once a week. After about a year I had improved so much I changed the schedule to one every other week. Dr. Mai came highly recommended by numerous friends of mine. I've never done acupuncture before so I was definitely a little hesitant. Dr. Mai is the best you can find. Thank god I found him. My mom has been seeing him for years now, he help her with her rheumatoid arthritis. I hurt my neck and he performed Acupuncture and also cupping as soon as I left his office it was 80% better, the next day it was 90% better. Yeah it left a little bit of bruising but he educated me to expect that, and I'm OK with it, whatever alleviates my pain. Acupuncture and Cupping have been around for over 100,000 years stuff like this works. I highly recommend Dr.Mai! Dr. Mai is the best. He managed to take away a chronic pain behind my right shoulder blade that had been bothering me for over a decade. Testing Yelp... A friend raved about Dr. Mai and his low pricing. After three years, I decided to give him a try end of 2016. My appointment was for 8:50 AM--very odd, I did clarify that. The staff showed up at about 8:55. I waited until 9:00 to step in. Dr. Mai is very earthy, soft-spoken. I liked his energy. Basic treatment room--white walls, some acupuncture-related posters, no ambient lighting. Laminate flooring. I could hear every step the receptionist took. Every word too. As the place was warming up slowly, he placed two TDP lamps over me, which took another 10 minutes or so to warm up. His technique was gentle. I freaked out a little when he placed a few needs obliquely in my neck and had me lie down face up, with an old purple towel beneath my head. Gentle needles here and there, for "qi and blood deficiency", and a few through my pants. Yes, through my pants. But no harm, no foul. He wanted to do cupping on my upper shoulder while I was dressed, but I insisted on shedding down to my camisole. Cupping oil was cold. Moving fire cupping technique was painful. I grimaced, thinking of Michael Phelps in the Under Armor 90-second commercial where he too grimaced during fire cupping. I understand then why some said cupping is painful. Really glad, it was only 1-2 minutes. He left some intra-dermal needles in my upper shoulders and neck. I passed on the herbs. Result: I felt great! I always feel great after acupuncture, better than I feel after massage or reiki or cranial sacral or myofascial release or Heller work or Thai massage. He's the fifth acupuncturist I've been to. Is the absolute truth when it comes to the five thousand year old practice of world class acupuncture!

Based on Angie's List and Yelp reviews, I took a chance on Dr. Mai. What a wonderful find he is. I have been reviewed and tested by dozens of MDs as well as holistic practitioners. Based on my past experience with acupuncturists, Dr. Mai is the "real deal" as to acupuncture. I can tell based on personal experience if an acupuncturist knows what they're doing as to putting in the acupuncture needles. Dr. Mai's deftness of touch, knowledge and approach gives me a high degree of confidence that he knows what he's doing. And trust me, I've been to many. I have a sense that he's "old school" in regards to his Chinese training and knowledge, but coupled with up to date western medical information and approaches (e.g., his herbs are powdered and provided in bottles, rather than the raw herbs which need to be boiled and stinks up your house). His English is excellent and explains in detail his findings (looking at my tongue and feeling my pulses), and what his goals are in terms of my care. It's wonderful to know that there are still acupuncturists out there like Dr. Mai, who is not trying to squeeze every dollar from non-Chinese clients who don't know any better and because it's "holistic" think it's worth paying high prices. I've been to acupuncturists in high rent districts such as Santa Monica, who tells you to come in 2 times a week for the rest of your life, and want to charge you a ridiculous amount for the herbs. And they still didn't help with my symptoms. Dr. Mai's affordability makes him very accessible to most. And, yes, he is "in plan" for my PPO -- hooray. The herbs are not covered by insurance, but they are only $10 a bottle. My only wish is that he is also open on Saturdays. Unfortunately, his hours are only Monday through Friday. I've only seen him, so far, 2 times (over a 2 week period), but my recent acute symptoms have substantially subsided. Though he is 30 miles away from me, he is worth the drive. read more

I liked the doctor, he is honest, direct to the point and he knows his stuff. He prescribed me acupuncture and some herbs. Acupuncture was good, not the most aggressive method that I had but my pain requires exercise more than anything.. the herbs were really great.
