When in Valpo, ask 10 people and at least half of them will point you to Jimmy's for breakfast and/or brunch. I finally gave it a try. Jimmy's is a family-run diner with the standard breakfast fare offered at economical prices. The place is tiny and there is only one server. Our table of six waited 15 minutes for a table and another 15 minutes to place our orders. There was also a long lag in food delivery. Needless to say, our experience was heavily shadowed by this waiting game. Fortunately, this is Valpo and street parking is free. Otherwise, that would've been a hefty parking fee in the big city. I had the standard breakfast of egg, sausage links, hash brown, and toast. Everything was well made. The hash brown was particularly pleasing. The top layer was excellently pan-fried to golden brown with a slight crisp whereas the bottom layer was soft and warm. One of my friends had the gryo omelette. It's not the usual breakfast entree but it was unique and surprisingly tasty. Despite the disappointment with the slow service, most of us enjoyed our entrees. Every plate was cleared down to the last few pieces of crumbs.

Ham & cheese omelette, toast, hash browns, french toast

I don't know how they make my food so quickly and so consistently every single. Perfect diner. Service is exemplary. Bring cash.

Jimmy's staff is always lightning fast and very friendly. This is my very favorite breakfast diner; I've never had a better short stack!

The pancakes are to die for, but don't expect to spend long in the restaurant. They get you in and out.

I was, admittedly, a little overwhelmed trying to pick a drink. She started a causal conversation of- what do you normally like? And we built from there! I ended up getting Voodoo, a peanut butter chocolate espresso latte and a plain bagel with cream cheese, OMG! I haven't stopped thinking about that drink. It was so smooth, just the right amount of sweet. Incredible! And the bagel was nice and crunchy on the outside and super soft in the middle. As someone who grew up a stones throw from NYC I can be a bagel snob. This was perfection. I sat there and worked for a while and at one point one of the baristas brought me over a cup of water. Said she noticed I had been working for a while and thought it might like some water. Which honestly was so touching because sometimes I get so hyper focused on what I'm doing I forgot to care for myself. That really meant a lot. This place is an absolute gem and if you're in the area- stop and check it out!

There are two doors and a step in between, and even I had to maneuver my way in and out. Just an FYI. The Press has a coffee shop inside of it. How nice! I didn't partake because the line was long, but the coffee smelled amazing. What a pleasant thing to be a bookstore that's also a coffee shop. There are some cozy couches and tables here and there among the stacks of books. I suppose you could take your cup of coffee and curl up on a couch or chair, because I saw one person doing that. But mostly: This is a bookstore, not so much a coffee shop or place to lounge. So I wouldn't visit with the intention of posting up and working for a few hours. This doesn't seem like that kind of place. Again, it's a bookstore first, a coffee shop second, a place to lounge third. Although The Press is a small bookstore, it has a nice children's section, with lots of books for kids and even graphic novels (my personal favorite). There is something for everyone here.

I loved the taste. I purchased a $17.00 key Lime, Lemon was out. I also bought a Lemon Slice, was not as good. The young lady with the noise piercing finished my sale. Within ear shot, I heard the lady behind me order a Chocolate Pie. The young lady says $8.00. I leave out the store confused as to why the person behind me charged only 1/2 of what I paid. I looked for a sale announcement, nothing indicating such. Went back in to inquire how this could happen at 6pm. She explained; because the pie was a day old....I asked her was this advertised anywhere as an I option? She looked at me like her hand was caught in the cookie jar and says "no". I left the store with the pie I paid full price; which I had no problem paying for, just wanted fairness. As a retired black elder, I just wanted to believe things could change. I guess Indiana just hasn't caught up yet. I probably will not spend my money there any longer.
