Jim's isn't pretentious. It's consistent. I haven't been to this Jim's in at least fifteen years, but it's the same as I remember it. Another diner chain, but with a Texas twist. What makes Jim's a 4 star option is the service. A good friend and I met here immediately after coming off of an overnight shift. Our hostess recognized that and made sure to sit us in a back corner where our uniforms wouldn't attract attention. The caffeine (coffee for her, tea for me) kept coming. Added bonus -- I ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast without eggs, which was no problem. The pleasant surprise was that they took a little off the price in recognition of it. Old ladies, truckers, policemen, restless teens, cowboy boots and hats = Jim's. I love it. If Jim's and IHOP, Denny's and the "hipster" Kerbey Lane and Magnolia Cafe were all involved in a brawl, there would be four body bags and Old Man Jim would not be in any of them. The Frontier Burger almost makes me give up being a borderline vegan. And the fries are crisp, mealy, and hot. If you have any special requests, such as replacing a side item with another, or wanting extra onions or mushrooms, go for it. The staff is more than accommodating. That said, Jim's looks like something you'd see in Roseanne's 1980s Lanford, Illinois. Shades of browns, worn but comfortable and clean seating, and some definitely good food. read more

We went to Jim's the other night with the kiddos, seeing as how they eat free from Monday-Wednesday. I loved Jim's when I was a kid. Their burgers and thin onion rings were just to die for. Sadly, I've been thinking for the last few years that they've gone off their game; the rings have been either burned or undercooked, the cheese soup has had too much filler, that sort of thing. Not this week. This week, Jim's was beautiful. They were a bright shining star in Diner-land. The Canadian cheese soup was tart and flavorful. The club sandwich was perfect, with lots of mayonnaise and really tasty tomatoes (that's one thing this salmonella outbreak has done - made restaurants quit serving the mealy bland red orbs that they normally do). The onion rings were perfectly sliced and cooked; a sprinkle of salt and a dunk into some ketchup and that's ring nirvana, right there. About the worst complaint I could come up with was: The hot fudge in the sundae was merely warm. Well, and the ice cream was a little elderly. After breakfasting around town more frequently, I stopped in at Jim's this morning and really have to update my review. This place has gotten better. I think they have the most perfectly cooked hashbrowns in town. They also cook their eggs perfectly. I used to think it smelled a little funny -- but it doesn't anymore. It smells good. The waitresses are still really nice. The food comes out fast and piping hot and the prices are reasonable. Today, I tried the huevos rancheros. 3 perfectly cooked over medium eggs, pretty good refried beans, amazing hash browns, salsa on top, sausage and tortillas on the side. All for under $7. Yep, this is the place to go for breakfast. They also have great big fluffy biscuits that you can get with gravy. Get them with eggs or add them to your meal. The only downside? Place gets MOBBED after about 9 on a weekend. We get up early, so its ok, but expect to wait if you come in after 9. I love Jims for breakfast. read more

I LOVE hashbrowns and Jim's has some of the best I have found in Austin! And speaking of hashbrowns Jim's makes their breakfast tacos with hashbrowns! In my opinion ALL taco potatoes should should be hashbrown style and never the gross mashed potatoes served in Taco Deli tacos. I usually get my tacos to go and put one in the fridge for the next day or meal because one is plenty for breakfast unless I am begging for food coma. I usually am not a fan of flour tortillas but they tend hold up better for breakfast ingredients and Jim's flour tortillas both taste good and even warm up well without falling apart. 2 tacos are less than 5.00 and the way I order them come with perfectly cooked eggs, hashbrowns, cheese and crispy bacon on a larger than average flour tortilla wrapped in foil and served with surprisingly spicy salsa. read more

Got to love an old classic. I've got two rules in life when it comes to great food. 1) If you have to order in Spanish, then it's authentic and Abuelita is cooking the excellent Mexican food in the back. 2) You want good comfort food, go to where the old people flock. While out on an errand with the Mr. we were actually planning to visit a local pizza eatery, but because of the massive traffic jam that is quite common in the Oak Hill area, instead we decided on an old favorite. Jim's is a great place for going to when you're on the road or when you're dealing with cold symptoms. I had a bowl of Canadian Cheese soup, which is always a favorite of mine's when I get there. It did not disappoint! With a little crushed crackers and viola, instant yum! I had the Swiss Baked Chicken with the Rice and Texas Toast. Like I said great comfort food at a very reasonable price. We had excellent service and even though it was a little understaffed that night, we never felt like we were neglected and our orders were exactly how we asked for. read more

Sweet Jim's... An Austin original chain, curiously enough the same franchise owns the Magic Time Machine in Dallas. Which is ironic because stepping into this Jim's is a lot like stepping into a time machine, with its thick brown wood paneling, brass light fixtures and turquoise and pink booths. I believe the last time this place had an update was in 1985. But that's not why you come to Jim's. You come here to get decent food for cheap prices anytime, day or night as they are open 24/7. I woke up on Monday with an intense craving for homemade biscuits. Jim's did not disappoint. You can have breakfast anytime and they also have dinners such as pasta and burgers. They are known for their tortilla soup which I have not tried but looks delicious. All in all this place is pretty decent for a 24 hour joint. I would still put Kerbey Lane and Magnolia ahead on the list for 24 hour choices, but I would go to Jim's before going to 24 Diner or IHOP/Denny's. read more

Damn, I love this place! If you don't think it is tough to stay on top for thirty years, just ask the Cowboys. It is disturbing to think that I've been eating here for almost that long - when we moved into our new house right there in Scenic Brook, and there were almost no other options in Oak Hill. Well, maybe the Big Wheel... But there was always Jim's. Consistent execution of the American standards, with a Texas spin. It is so easy to take the easy way out - pre made biscuits are a pet peeve, and Jim's dedication to doing that simple step right is just one example of a high standard. Another example is the long time waitstaff. The servers there are the gold standard. The hipsters at the faux cool spots couldn't begin to deliver the service that is given with a smile, and apparent effortlessness. Jim's is one of the last of its kind. Don't even let me hear "they need to remodel" or "it's so outdated" or, god forbid, "so uncool". Just shut up and eat. Everything they have is good. Trust me. The words "old school" when applied to dining are a good thing. I've been going to Jim's my whole life and they have never screwed it up. Standout #1: the breakfast tacos. 2 for $3.59, they're huge, and they kick ass. A mix of their yummy hash browns, eggs, and bacon, sausage, ham, or western mix (ham, onions, peppers, tomato). Get a bagful, as they reheat nicely. Standout #2: The Frontier Burger. Best burger in town. A pox on all those hipster $12 "gourmet kobe beef fed with grass from the shire" places. Six bucks gets you a 2/3rd pound double meat charbroiled juicy masterpiece and hot, crispy fries. This burger is the closest thing I have had to a GM Steakhouse burger since...well, since GM Steakhouse closed. Standout #3: Chili Chopped Steak. The Frisco corners the market with the Chili Chop't, but Jim's is a respectable second. A charbroiled beef patty smothered in their greasy, meaty chili and cheese. I substitute their refried beans for the fries. They make great refried beans--they taste like bacon. Also great omelets. Pretty much all the breakfast items are fab, and you can get them all day and all night. I once went to Jim's at 3:00 in the morning. A young man was in the parking lot hanging out of his truck, vomiting, just as two police officers walked up. They passed him right on by and went in. Priorities, bitches. read more

I love this place the way I love some movies. Hipsters hate it, and, by virtue of fandom, I am in the same club as many, many old people. They're always open. I always know what's on the menu. I have to agree with the rest. best hash browns i've ever had. blueberry pancakes taste like they are made from scratch and the chicken fried steak... can't stop eating until its gone. The steak had great flavor and the meat and breading were a perfect blend. easy to nom nom and nom nom some more.. its not often that happens first thing in the morning. for myself i feel the food is several steps above kerby lane in the area. the restaurant itself is straight up old school. you'll find lots of families and older folks who have been going there for generations. Even the waitress has been there for 30 years. I'm from San Antonio where Jim's is a way of life. I've always been a fan, but if you come expecting some higher brow meal, don't get your hopes up. This isn't going to be significantly different than what you might expect at a Denny's. Jim's trick is that while the menu might look the same, the food is usually a lot better. So why only three stars? I had a chicken fried steak the other night. The cfs was tasty if not a bit small. I got a generous wad of mashed potatoes with it. I'd say if you accumulated all the brown gravy on my plate, it might have been a pint. That's a lot of gravy (I always ask for it on the side, except this night). I got an anemic serving of broccoli. I was full when I quit, so that's good. I couldn't punish myself any more because the roll was kind of stale/hard so a lot of the river of gravy stayed on the plate. If you have not had their Canadian Cheese Soup, you have not lived. That's good stuff. Check with your cardiologist before hand though. There might be some salt in that there soup. Their burgers are good, although standard greasy spoon fare. Shakes, malts, and most all of their desserts are also worth a look. It's open 24 hours, which if you're near the Y, it might be the only place open after 9pm, or really early in the morning. Breakfast here is pleasant but don't forget the grease. read more

I grew up on Jim's in Oak Hill. Dated and divey, sure, but the food is exactly how it presents itself and service can't be beat. You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't agree with me. Jim's has proven itself worthy of the sometimes longggg wait on a weekend (and yes, it can be a very long wait at times). I've recently started a whole Jim's revival. My bf and I have designated Jim's days. When he asks me to grab breakfast, I don't assume he is talking about anything else. I had a pretty bad experience(s) at the 183 location more recently. Its was closer to us and we made the mistake of cheating on the "real jims". It just wasn't up to par. (you can check out my other reviews for info on that.) Most recently, I am happy to say , we got seated, greeted, and orders taken within 5 minutes at Oak Hill. Our waitress was kind and helpful and, better yet, when I hung around waiting to give my waitress her tip, the manager immediately walked over to ask me if I needed help with anything. She probably thought I was crazy for how much I smiled at that. Great for small groups (used to come here a lot with my theatre organization in high school and then during late nights with friends), great for after church, breakfast all day (and I really do recommend sticking to breakfast), and almost always a friendly wait staff. A word of caution for those new to Texas, I recommend doing a little research on country diners. I have overheard a few hilarious orders from people who didn't quite get the concept. Was tired at eating at Kirby Lane for late night eats. Found Jim's on yelp. The blueberry pancakes are the bomb! The blueberries are huge and you get lots of it! The biscuits and sausage gravy is yummy! If you can get with jalapeño try it! You won't be disappointed. The eggs and bacon are good. The chicken fried steak is crispy and big. Haven't even gotten out of the car, and we're already being stared down by some creepy ne'er-do-well inside the restaurant. What's this fool's problem? Stop looking at me! I'm just a guy getting out of his car... geez... Attentive, albeit seemingly grudging service... Food came out quickly... tasted surprisingly good (much better than IHOP) Had some not completely terrible coffee, shared a short stack of pancakes, scrambled eggs with cheddar and some biscuits and gravy. And all for less than $15. Hit the spot... satiated the need for pancakes... which can be as powerful as heroin addiction I'm told. Sometimes you just need a trip to a place like Jim's. I'm a breakfast/ diner kinda gal and Jim's is the best I know in Austin. Gotta love Jim's for giving the most important meal of the day it's due and for the home- style hospitality. You will be served by waitresses who have been there for years, call you honey and treat you like company- not a customer. Gosh, those girls will make your head spin on a week- end morning. Whizzing around like Grandma on Thanksgiving serving up bisquits and gravy, pancakes and Spanish omelets while a flock of folks pile up in the lobby waitin' for some of that fine chicken fried steak and tasty ham and eggs( grits or hash browns, sugar?). All the while keepin' the tea glasses filled and the coffee hot. A couple of pointers to enhance the experience: Request "real butter" unless you want margarine on your toast and bisquits You must ask for the strawberry jam, otherwise they will always bring the grape jelly. Go before 9:30 on the week- ends to avoid a wait If you ask nice, you can get fresh fruit instead of potatoes with the eggs And best of all breakfast is served all day and all night. Swung in here late night last Thursday after seeing music down in Wimberley. I haven't been in here in a while - this place is a great friendly restaurant with good food and no attitude (remember Vics, etc., but that's another story). Split some chicken-fried-steak and eggs. So me and this place have had a long term relationship going on 13 years. Honestly in my mind I don't think the place has changed in that time, which, is a good thing in this case. I usually come in here after long nights of drinking, and to the servers, I thank you. For putting up with me and my buddies all these years :) From bounce ball mayhem to sleeping on couches in entrance, you have always treated us right. The food, can always count on it to be great. From Sunday after church, to 3am on a Saturday night, its always spot on. I think I have had everything on the menu twice, and everything is good. But I do come in here 99% of the time for the breakfast. Priced right and definitely good portions. So if you feel like getting breakfast after a day of praying, or sinning, stop by Jims. Tip the staff well, and don't mind the drunks talking to loud with their mouth open, it might just be me :) read more

Holy Crap! I have been coming here for 13 years and the Biscuits and Sausage gravy are gold standard! The hash browns are also stellar! Crisp, brown, and fluffy on the inside as they should be! The Waitstaff is the best! You have servers that have been working there for upwards of 33 years, and remember you and your family when you return. YUM! LOVE their potato and egg tacos! I ALWAYS get two when I come here. They could make sure tortilla soup more hot. Last time we got some it was lukewarm. BUT all the other times I go here it's been a great consistency. The original burger is GREAT, Hawaiian chicken is GREAT, Chicken Fried steak DELICIOUS!!!, cinnamon icecream with apple pie even more delicious!!!, wonderful fluffy perfected pancakes, and more. slow service but that's ok.
