As she pours into the ceramic cup it spills on the side, the place that you put your lip to sip the tea, she wiped out with the cleaning wet towel used in the bar area for cleaning counter (disgusted face :() which is full of germs. I come here about once a month. While I am not a big fan of the coffee (I find it overly strong and bitter for me), I do adore their baked goods. The almond Belgian chocolate croissant is to die for. The chocolate is rich and chocolaty and the almond filling is not overly sweet or synthetic tasting. The croissant is flaky and light. It is a very good combination if you like almond and chocolate. Another favorite is the jalapeno and cheese muffin. It is great for breakfast or snack. It is not very spicy and the cheese is yums. For a sweet accompaniment, I like the salted caramel crackle. It is a bit hard/crunchy but it goes perfectly with the coffee. This place has an upper level, so do check it out if the ground floor is full. This JJ Bean has garnered a particularly high rating, I was curious if it was in fact so. Neap. (No+yep). Kind of but not really. The place is located in one of those repetitive housing developments by the notorious Onni Developers. The interior of the joint is somewhat alright for a suburban cafe. Got all the trappings of nowness, but lack the finer refinements such as acoustic and temperature control. With two entrances of the corner location, you are ensured to get a constant draft. You might as well be sitting outside in a breezy winter day of 0 degrees. The surfaces of the place is all hard which bounce every echo endlessly. This is super fun on a day when it is busy with kids like today. The offerings; the coffee isn't bad but due to the temperature of the place, the coffees were lukewarm to start. It is on the strong bitter side and has more significant kick than anything Starbucks. Nothing remarkable. The pastries was soggy and regrettable. For whatever reasons, like the Commercial Drive location, JJ Bean's staff here are also grumpy. Two young angry ladies held down the joint. Barking at the customers. Could be they are understaffed? Whatever... But as a customer, it was a terrible first time experience. The coffee isn't significantly good enough to tolerate the overall unpleasantness. Won't be returning. read more

Nice cafe, but tables aren't very clean the menu is also very small, just a A4 page on the counter, very difficult to read when there is a line... similarly, prices on baked goods are super tiny. I work for one of the contractors providing services to the management of this strip mall, so I have occasion to visit this location often. It has a very nice vibe that is distinct from the corporate consumerist sensation you get from their competitor across the street. Not a coffee snob, it's all the same to me. The baked goods, sandwiches, and wraps are where they truly excel. Feels like wholesome, homemade pieces, unlike the larger joints where they essentially serve fast food. Very friendly staff, enjoy the design and atmosphere. I'm a big fan of dark roast coffee so its hurts for me to say this, I do not really enjoy their Railtown beans. I like Honduran, I like Organic, I love an Americano but I find these always turn out a little too bitter for me. I'm a simple coffee fella and I never use alt/dairy/sugar, so you can really taste the acidity. If that's your game I understand, just not my first choice. I have been obsessed with the Jalapeno & Cheese muffin at multiple times in my life. I've been known to eat one a week, which is likely my shame threshold, as this is such a treat that I know it can't be great for my dad bod. JJ Bean just opened in Pomo. So far, so good. Definitely has a Yaletown in the 'burbs feel. No complaints on ambience here. THAT drink station is bloody awesome. Hello cane syrup, raw sugar and fresh, fresh cream. Have I mentioned the free pastry samples at the register? Don't be shy and get one of them babies. Great looking pastry case filled with delightful, non stale-looking, more out-of-the-ordinary goodies. You won't go wrong with the banana bread or the giant vegan chocolate cookie. It's been a while since I've experienced cafe goodness like this. I've been in twice so far trying to avoid the Starbucks barista across the street who I had the worst customer service experience with this past August. (Clue: if you like being told you CAN'T have a customized drink, go to this Starbucks) I actually walked into JJ Bean and asked for a pumpkin spice latte, only to find out they do not specialize in fancy shmancy drinks. So I had a hazelnut latte with the perfect aroma and crema to it. The second time, I had an americano and a regular brew. Great, straight to the point coffee. Service here is all smiles and super friendly, despite the fact that they're so newly opened, staff is just getting their bearings on. I do miss the other awesome baristas at the above-mentioned Starbucks, but JJ Bean's got a new regular thanks to... From what I heard, it's a no wifi zone at all their shops. As a resident of Suter Brook, coffee enthusiast and vegan, I absolutely love JJ Bean (vs. Starbucks across the street). Their wide selection of vegan muffins and cookies are awesome for weekend mornings. I wish they were open earlier in the morning so I can grab coffee/muffin before heading to work. On some days I work from home, I like to go to coffee shops and work, but I once asked one of the staff if there's a plug anywhere and she said no. She added that JJ Bean is a place to socialize; thus, it was designed to discourage those who want to work/study alone. Holding a laptop, I felt suddenly unwelcome here and since then, whenever I go there alone to just enjoy a cup of coffee, read a newspaper, etc. I feel uneasy when a staff looks at me. As a regular, it may help if staff were more friendly, welcoming and making conversation esp. with the regulars but this is lacking compared to the over the top service I get from Starbucks across the street, where I've been served with recognition, interesting conversations, and complementary drinks when they made an extra drink and they see that I've been working for a few hours. read more

Since I live near this café, it has become my go-to place for a little tea/coffee break in the afternoon during some of the weekdays and breakfast during the weekend. The location has a nice, modern feel with bricked walls, and large windows, making the interior of the café very welcoming. And speaking of welcoming, even after going there several times already, I have never experienced any hostility or discomfort; the staff working here is very friendly and sociable. I remember being surprised with the variety of pastries and sandwiches and other café-treats they offered. It's cheaper or the same price as the other cafés, but I would say that the quality of the pastries here is muy bueno! My favourite pastry would be Butter Tart because the crust has a crispy texture, and the filling tastes like butterscotch.. or caramel (not entirely sure... the point is, it's sweet), so it's a satisfying little treat for a sweet tooth such as myself. As for the drinks, I have not had their coffee, or Chai latte etc... but I've had their Sencha tea, and it tastes pretty good - If you like Matcha Green tea, I think you would like this one too. There are two levels, but I usually get the seat on the second floor because the seating space feels more open, and the natural light from outside amplifies the coziness along with your drink. I do feel that there should be more seating, and the wi-fi could improve just a little bit more, but overall, it's a great place to meet with your friends to chat or to settle in and study/work. read more

The place was a little hard to find & parking is a pain. I want to start by saying I have very little knowledge of coffee, except I like my folders. I came in here looking to buy a friend a birthday gift. The barista was slightly impatient with me even after I explained I wasn't very knowledgeable & although I was the only person in there she tried to rush me & acted like she had someplace else she had to be. Well, except for the warm drinks. Baking on the premises also a huge lure, (for gluten-eaters that is) as the (torturous) aroma of freshly baked cookies rises up to the second level, taunting, tempting.... I absolutely love the atmosphere and design of this place, though the chairs upstairs can be a little uncomfortable. It's in a great location for all of us tri-cities folk. Unfortunately, while their customer service is excellent, I don't think they quite have their barista skills perfected yet, so the quality is not as great as other JJ Bean locations. I find most of the espresso-based beverages are often quite weak. The plus side is the pastries are the same as all of the other locations, so you can't really go wrong there. read more

I was here roughly 3 weeks ago to grab a coffee for my daily commute. The manager, Ayla, was unprofessional and going off about her personal problems in front of several customers who clearly looked uncomfortable, and leaving the other baristas to deal with the daily rush. The service was slow but this could have been sped up if the manager wasn't hiding in the back room for the majority of it. You could briefly see the annoyance and displeasure on the baristas' faces, but they grit and bared it and continued to provide service with a smile-- props! Overall, the coffee was great, but I would not come to the Suterbrook location again solely because of the rudeness of the manager. read more

My first review (below) gave 2 stars. I was contacted by someone about my coffee experience and it was explained that Natural coffees are not roasted but dried in the sun. Chacun a son gout, as the English say, bit I found it really awful coffee. Anyway, person at JJ Bean H.O. gave me two 200 gram bags of roasted beans (Railtown & Eastside) to make up for my 'natural' coffee experience. Both are very good. JJ Bean knows how to treat customers, roast beans and make excellent brewed coffee (I was given an excellent Americano when I picked up my beans). ORIGINAL REVIEW: Two stars because it is a nice clean new space but the very friendly and competent staff sold me the worst beans ever. I have bought beans from JJ Bean for years at the Commercial Drive location and been happy with the quality so this was very disappointing. I bought Wote Konga Natural Ethiopia beans. FYI I grind my own, use a bodum coffee press and drink my coffee black. The coffee made from these beans was horribly fruity and acidic, completely lacking in bottom notes or earthiness; it was thin, un-coffee-like and the awful fruitiness lingered for far too long. I find it hard to believe that anyone could like this 'coffee'. Either the roaster screwed up or this is just a very bad bean. read more

Their customer service is awesome; nicest people working here! Coffee tastes fantastic, and such a nice atmosphere! In contrary to what Sheryl said below, they actually DO have wifi, but it's only available during weekdays. Which is nice, because that means I can actually get a seat during the weekend instead of having to go somewhere else because of people bumming around on their computers for hours... I loved finding out the food was baked right at the store, so you know you're getting the freshest stuff (can't go wrong with the ham and swiss turnover!!). They also have a gorgeous plant wall made of real plants that's different from any other store I've ever been to. Definitely a go to spot for someone looking for great quality coffee! read more

Awesome vegan options! It is rare to find a cafe that offers vegan breakfast items but JJ Bean nailed it! Their Beyond Meat breakfast wrap is DELICIOUS and their vegan muffins are great too. I had the zucchini chocolate chip muffin a couple of weeks ago and it was tasty. A great option in Port Moody for people looking for dairy, egg and meat-free breakfast items. read more
