If your looking for a burger this is your place. Just about all the burgers came out in less than 5 minutes. They cook them up at the end of the bar. These are sliders. The place is small but setup in way that fosters interaction and hopefully community. It is not all about the 'sports game'. There is ample seating though. May not be suitable for large groups. The 'Beer Mail' is really great. If your coming in and don't know your way around these make for fun ice breakers. To help you settle in. I loved how this instantly separated this bar from others. Service was less than 1 minute despite being busy. With three bartenders on hand the mood was relaxed and pleasant. When I engaged the bartenders they appeared to be happy to strike up small talk. Nice to see the bar owner keeping his/her business well stocked with staff. If it was not for the young man who sat next to me coughing all over the place I would have stayed longer. I was in Fargo on business and asked a friend where to get a great burger, he said JL Beers was a must. They did not disappoint- one of the best burgers I've had in a long time with a very chill and comfortable environment and the kindest staff. We admittedly only went here because it was across from our hotel and was open relatively late (midnight) but it was great. The bartender was really friendly and easy to talk to. He gave us tastings of whatever we wanted and suggested his recent favorites. Their selection isn't huge but they had a lot of off-beat beers we haven't seen in many other bars. I can't comment on the food since we didn't try it but the beer selection was solid. It's a tiny place but wasn't packed so we got a seat at the bar and it was a really chill low-key vibe. We ordered pick up as our first experience with JL Beers. I got a chicken sandwich with French fries and my partner got a Smokey the Beer Cheese burger with loaded fries. My sandwich was good - the chicken was cooked well and I liked that the bun had a slight crisp. The fries were nothing to write home about. He had troubles finishing his food because of how salty it was. We'll give them a go in-person before making any final judgments. Let's start with the excellent: the homemade chips are super fresh, truly excellent. Try the jalapeños and cheese for the kick, great experience. The 3 stars solely relate to the cooking of the burgers: why picking a good beef piece and overcook it. One may argue that it will value the dressing and the other components of the burger, I will still prefer tasting the meat first and anything else will be secondary. No rare burger here and that's really a miss in my book. Pros: Probably THE best selection of beer (tap or otherwise) in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Cons: Unless you're drinking American macrobrews (i.e., Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Schlitz, PBR, etc.), beer should be served in the appropriate glassware - especially if you're talking about well crafted Belgian or German brews! It does, contrary to the misguided opinion of a "professional" food critic who shall remain unnamed, make a huge difference in terms of flavor, aroma and mouthfeel. JL Beers, however, does NOT come anywhere close to serving their brews in the appropriate glassware (unless you order one of the Lindemann's Lambics, in which case it comes in the distinctive Lindemann's tulip glass.) That's a shame, really... As someone who appreciates beer, I want the full experience. People eat (and DRINK) with their eyes as well as their mouths. Then there's the food... The best thing I can say about the food is that they make the potato chips fresh, which is a novel thing in a world of pre-made, pre-packaged potato chips. Past that, I can't say that I'm horribly impressed. A small burger patty, drenched with what looks (and tastes) like melted Velveeta? Pfui. You serve gourmet beer, but your burgers are below "greasy spoon" quality? And, really... The plastic baskets with white and red checkered tissue paper are nothing more than tacky. (Though, I can somewhat understand... It saves on the necessity of having a dishwasher in the building.) And whose idea was it to showcase the canned soda and domestic beers on the wall? That space should be used to either showcase the high-quality brews on tap and in bottle or store the branded glassware that should be used to SERVE said high-quality brews. It's disappointing that a place like JL Beers can come up with the financing to open a food/beverage establishment but a well-thought out business plan is overlooked and neglected. Shame. read more

The beer selection is OK to lacking (though it sadly is the best in the Fargo area). It's usually poured below the rim of the glass, which for the prices they charge is unacceptable in my mind. I'm really not that picky, but when I'm paying the higher than average prices they charge, I expect a full glass of beer. I've also had cases where glasses weren't as clean as they should be, and also the wrong types for certain styles of beer (as other reviewers mentioned). Again not usually that picky, but when I go to a venue that has the word beer in their title, I expect a little more. As for the burgers, I can't really say good things. The buns are very low quality and almost soggy, and the cheese like one other reviewer mentioned is similar to Velveeta or Kraft Singles. The patty itself is very small, and overcooked. The only reason the humpty dumpty is good is that the egg on top improves the fact that the meat is bland, dry, and overcooked. The staff isn't terribly friendly (not mean or terrible by any means, but just nothing to write home about). The size of the place is another thing that bothers me. The first time you go there it seems like the coolest and greatest (most exclusive) place to be in Fargo. That's how they suck people in. For some reason the idea of a small cramped place seems to get people excited (very interesting part of human nature I suppose). It was cool for their first location downtown (since that's all they had to work with), but not in all of their other locations. On the upside, their fresh chips and fries are pretty great. Another plus aside from the size, it really does have a cool atmosphere. Also, check out for beer related events. Those are what make the place worth going to. All in all, for a place that prides itself on it's beer and burgers, they seriously fall short. There are many other places in town where you can find a much better burger. Edit: I also have to add that they charge extra for water. Huh? A place that serves alcohol charges extra for a bottle of water? Will also be interesting to see what happens with such a fast expansion now that some better places like Wurst Bier Hall have popped up. read more

This place is wildly popular, and I'm not sure why. First the good: They have 1919 Root beer on tap. Awesome. The meh: The burgers are cheap. They should be as they are really nothing special or interesting. Extras are a la carte as well. The fries are kinda lousy, but the chips make up for that. The beer selection is alright, but there are quite a few places in town that are similar if not better. The bad/stupid: They actually boast their lack of seating. This is just stupid. With their first place downtown, they had no other choice. Now that these things are popping up everywhere, they do. I know of a ton of folks who won't go there because the intentional crowding of the place is a big turn off. I agree. Want to experience a (sorta) neat Fargo fad? Have at. Meh. A rather boring selection of nationally-distributed (mostly BudMillCoors) tap beers. They don't have much in terms of solid Minnesota beers, just Summit and Schell's. I'm sure it's largely a consequence of poor distribution in NoDak but it's hard to justify squeezing into a cramped little joint when the same beers can be found at any given chain restaurant/bar. When in town and downtown I tend to walk in only to decide to head across the street to HoDo or a few blocks over to Sidestreet. The burgers aren't bad but nothing spectacular. Plenty of places with comparable/better burgers. The fries are alright. They were a little bit soggy, perhaps the result of poor blanching? The chips surprisingly good but they are just that: chips. I get what they were going for. Hopefully as they expand they can exert pressure of some sort to expand beer distribution in the state. read more

JL Beers is a favorite in the FM community, but the bottom line is this. They have a bunch of great beers on tap. The burgers in my opinion are just fine, even better if you have already had a few beers. Deep down they just seem like glorified George Foreman burgers to me. The real issues is that the space is small. "Seating for 1,000....24 at a time" doesn't really do it for me. If you'd like to enjoy a great craft beer, be sure to hit up JL Beers during non-peak hours. Right across the street from my hotel. I sat outside because all the chairs are tall inside. It's a perfect seat, right in the shade, at this little 2 table roped off area. You're almost on display, and with burgers this great, it's a proud moment indeed. Instead of JL, it should be OMG. I'm loving every bite of this simple burger, that not many others can match. The sauce reminds me of a ketchup/mayo combo. You don't mind seeing pink instead of red. My 1919 rootbeer on tap was icy cold, and cost as much as the burger. This place is definitely worth the wait. While it's crowded, I think it's part of the charm. If you're not in the mood to wait for a table to open up, you can always get it to go. No really, you can even get beer to go. It's heavenly. Everything is prepared right in front of you. The burger selection is small, but all of the coices are amazing. I always go for the ragin' cajun and cajun chips. With most of the burgers being $4, it's an affordable place to eat. The beer gets expensive, but they aren't always your most common beers. I go here if I want a specialty beer or a Sierra Nevada that isn't found anywhere else. It's usually waiting for me here. This is by far the best location with the best crew. They're all super friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. There's a reason why so many people eat here alone. Most nights, they'll even give you a name tag, which can be really amusing if you're sitting at the bar and is a great way to make new friends. They're always willing to make up new drinks, and always have a cool beer float idea. Since you can sample any beer on tap, it's hard to be disappointed with your selection. Even the root beer is delicious! My only complaint is their policy on water. They say that can't control the flavor of water out of a tap, so you must purchase a bottle of water if you want it with your meal. I'm sorry, but it's not just a way to make a few dollars. It's a way to prove that you're not willing to make your company eco-friendly. Offering tap water would go a long way versus the number of bottles they go through. Then again, if I'm offered bottled water without the option for tap, I'd probably just cave and get a root beer float instead. read more

My favorite part about JL Beers (other than the beer selection) are their fresh cut chips! The fries are great, but there is nothing like the fresh chips! Everyone always says the best part is the burger, and their burgers are delicious, but the chips are a must! As for burgers, they are pretty frickin' great! My favorite is a good 'ol fashioned cheese burger, but the Humpty Dumpty is excellent as well! Don't forget the beer! Grab a growler to go, if you want a seasonal to have at home, which is pretty sweet! The prices are great and their are numerous locations in the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area. Huge beer selection so if you're into beer, check the place out. The place is essentially a lunch bar/beer bar with a small grill that makes a decent burger. There aren't a lot of selections but the burgers seem to be good enough that it doesn't matter. The chips were very good. Potatoes cut in front of you and deep fried and served within seconds. Not a bad concept. I went for the cajun ones and it was a good choice. Overall, I've had better burgers (and ones that were a whole lot worse). I went in on a Saturday around noon. I must have gotten there in the nick of time because not even 10 minutes later there were no seats to be had. The ambiance is perfect. It's very laid back and the service is quick. I didn't have much interaction with the staff other then ordering my food and saying "Thank you," but they seemed very nice. Now for the food, which is what matters. I ordered the Rajun Cajun...HOLY CRAP, it was a good decision! Tasty burger, cooked to perfection, with pepperjack cheese, onions, lime sauce, among some other stuff. You definitely can't beat the price either. I paid $4 something for the burger and $2 for the soda. All the sides are a la cart, which was kinda ehhh, but I was full off the burger. I definitely recommend this place for a quick lunch or to sit and chat. read more

The June 2014 issue of Fargo Monthly listed JL Beers as having the best burger in all of Fargo - called the "Humpty Dumpty" so I wanted to put that to the test. Indeed, the Humpty Dumpty lives up to the reputation listed in that magazine. The burger has a topping of cheese and a fried egg which gives it a great kick and comes with either french fries or potato chips. There's a good selection of beer which I want to try next time. JL does have a non-alcoholic root beer which will do in a pinch if you're not in the mood for alcohol. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a Sunday while in Fargo for one night. This is a small place with friendly staff and good burgers and fries. We shared a burger and loaded fries and they were nice enough to split it and put it on two separate plates without us having to ask. I found the burger a tad too salty, but it might just be me since I don't like very salty foods. They also have an excellent beer selection. Another interesting thing they do here is that they give you postcards which you can fill out to anyone and they will put a stamp on it and mail it for you! We filled out two to send to my son at overnight camp. I thought that was a really nice touch! read more

My how that is tempting to rush over to get a pint! Great beer selection that is always changing. Love that we can sample the beers before ordering a pint. Have had some that we didn't like. So I have to say when little places like this start filtering into small towns like Fargo that can only mean one thing: We're movin' on up! Is this place Flip Flops or Holeman & Finch? Nah, but it is a pretty good joint for some good beer and a pretty tasty burger. The Man and I headed over Sunday night to get our grub on and we were lucky to find two seats at the bar waiting for us. Usually this place is packed with patrons because it only houses 49 heads due to fire regulations. Be warned that there is always a possiblity of a wait for seats; not really a great place for a big group of folks. The beer list is impressive, though, like Derek stated they -for some reason- aren't serving their brews in the correct stemware/glassware. Beers have particular flavours and traits that can be better appreciated when served in vessels that allow for those characteristics to shine. Space may be the biggest factor in limited glass service, though, and since most folks don't know, or care to know, the difference in pours the investment might be lost on the masses in the long run. *shrugs* Now, the chips are awesome! It is pretty cool that they prepare them fresh on the spot, but this isn't really a novelty for me coming from Atlanta. Honestly, in my opinion, the sides shouldn't outshine your main dish and while I really enjoyed my Humpty Dumpty with bacon --and The Man his JL burger-- we kept filling our faces with chips over and over. My burger was fantastic as far as dive joints go, but if this place gets any sort of real competition from a true burger boutique in the near future they will have to step up their game. We were in Fargo and wanting a burger. I had read reviews online first. Decided to give this place a shot. Excellent beer cheese dip although some of our chips were not cooked all the way. The burgers were ok at best. I got the one with the ghost pepper cream cheese. Very tame spice but the burger itself was flavorless. Same with my partners. We questioned if they were frozen patties.
