I felt there were hits and misses when we dined for brunch in this new prohibition themed steakhouse in the new ROAR building in Winston Salem, but overall a pleasant experience. The appetizers we ordered were absolutely the star of our experience. The goat cheese everything biscuits were dense - but that's the way I prefer my biscuits. The cherry butter sent them over the top and I'd order these as just my meal on every single visit. The Buffalo shrimp deviled eggs were unique and tasty too! Creamy with perfectly fried shrimp on top - yum! The pimento cheese and pepper jam on the fried green tomatoes were a home run - the actual tomato not so much. I like my tomatoes cooked down and these were hard to slice through with a fork. They were perfectly fried, though. The crispy outside was pleasant. Our entrees were just okay. Not bad but nothing served that wow factor. I think it's because there were elements on every dish that lacked seasoning. My steak and eggs could have used salt and the home fries needed seasoning. The crab cakes were super small and more breading than crab. I did like that they used the same biscuits for the Philly steak biscuits as the ones we had for an appetizer. I will say my steak was cooked to perfection (juicy and at the temp i asked for) and so were my eggs. If you can master the correct cook on steak and eggs at the same time then you're good in my book. I just wish I had gotten more steak on my plate than the four pieces - and a garnish to liven it up would have been nice. The cocktail I ordered was delicious - would definitely order again and recommend to anyone dining there. The staff was also super attentive. We were notified upon entry they were short staffed and I can always appreciate the honesty. The manager did apologize several times and thanked us for our patience but honestly, I didn't even realize things were coming out slowly because I was enjoying the company I was with. I am more than willing to try this spot again just for their appetizers alone and for some of their items on their dinner menu that look amazing. Finally tried it! Great menu for drinks and food. Just not sure why on a Thursday night there was no one in here except us. I really hope this place makes it, because the food is great and the service was too. Inside they have bar seating or sit down, booth like with chairs. Nice bar area. Just strange no one was there. My friend and I both started off with wine, the Double trouble red blend from Washington was awesome! Great wine glasses! Small plates they had tons of, took us awhile to pick a couple. Great choices. The wild mushroom Aranchini, truffle and wild mushroom risotto, mascarpone and whipped creme fraiche , with little Parmesan chips, this was delicious, nice crunchy coating, and the risotto was nice and creamy. Then the orange bbq"beef" potstickers, vegan made with impossible meat, these again were so good, loved the crunchy wrappers, tasted just like beef to me, great seasoning, the ponzu over it was awesome too. Loved this, seemed really light too. We shared the scallop primavera, my friend wanted her scallops to be browned more, so they did, and mine were just seared, like I like them. I loved that they were great about customizing. They also do charge $5 to split a entree. The sauce was so creamy, with some veggies, again great flavor. I love the fat noodles, pappadelli ! Better than other ones they could have used. It was the perfect combination perfect to share as it's a heavier dish. Highly recommend this entree. My friend wanted to try the popcorn cheesy grits too, so she got a side, which she said was different and good. They looked amazing, like everything. Dessert, it was my first choice as soon as I read it, blood orange key lime pie, and yes, get it. Loved the blood orange sauce they pour on top , and nice creamy key lime filling, the crust also seemed different from normal graham cracker, but that's what it was. Yummm. Everything here made for a great dining experience, the menu was so varied, and something for everyone. I will be back for sure. Just hope people keep this place open. Stopped in for a brunch today at JL Casper's and had very high hopes! The menu looked AMAZING and our group had eaten downstairs at Est! Est!! Est!!! recently and were blown away. I'll start with the cocktails! I ordered a peach Manhattan and while it was yummy, the garnish was cherries and strawberries, and the drink itself had a reddish tint. There wasn't any peach flavor, and the presentation of the garnish I think could've been a little better. I found that with a lot of my "misses" with JL Casper's were simple things like this. We each got an appetizer and all 3 were a hit! First, the goat cheese everything biscuits. Literally nothing needs to be changed about this dish. It was so good. However, I didn't really taste any goat cheese in the biscuit. Also the name made me think there would be everything bagel seasoning on them, but there wasn't that either. Again, the dish was great but the description in the menu led me to expect something different. The fried green tomatoes were great with great presentation! I only wish they'd have been cooked just a bit more. The breading was perfect, but the tomato inside could've been done a bit more. Everything else was spot on. Last but absolutely not least... BUFFALO SHRIMP DEVILED EGGS. Holy eggs. This was the star of the entire meal for me! The shrimp was perfectly succulent, breaded and fried to perfection. The sauce was perfect spicy sweet and perfectly complemented the egg filling. The blue cheese crumbles were a delicious addition and the chives were a great garnish. The description on the menu listed ranch dressing as an ingredient but I didn't get any detection of that. Again, this recipe is perfect, but maybe just the description of the dish could be tweaked. Next, the entrees! I ordered the Philly steak biscuit. It had those same delicious, flaky layered biscuits from our biscuit appetizer and they were just as delightful. It was topped with a breakfast version of a Philly cheesesteak. The steak portion was plentiful and had great flavor. It was coated in cheese and delicious. I wish there would've been more peppers and onions. The eggs were a solid portion, but definitely missing salt and pepper. The home fries were really bland. I loved the crispiness, but they needed seasoning. One of my friends got the crab cake Benedict, and the crab cakes were small and had a lot of breading. I also think a quick chive or parsley garnish would've set off the hollandaise. It just looked kind of plain. The Brussels sprouts were delicious. We spotted them as a side for another dish and ordered a side of them. It was a huge portion, they were tender on the inside and delightfully crispy on the outside with a perfect sticky sweet sauce. My other friend got the steak and eggs. I was kind of shocked that the steak portion was as small as it was. It listed chimichurri in the menu description, but the waitress said it was cooked in it when we asked. I think it really would've improved the flavor and presentation of the dish to have a fresh cilantro chimichurri served with the steak. These are super small adjustments that for me, would've taken this meal from good to great. The space is awesome and I love the prohibition theme. Everything from the lounge area furniture to the decor lends to the Roaring 20's theme where Roar gets its name. It would be a great place to order some of the appetizers and enjoy live music. I think JL Casper's has a lot of potential but I left feeling just "meh" about the whole experience. I loved the atmosphere with the huge windows letting in a ton of natural light. A couple of foodie friends and I went here for Sunday brunch and we were the only ones there at 11:00. A few more groups trickled in after us but overall the restaurant was quite empty. We had a reservation but clearly didn't need one. We started with a couple of cocktails and I remember my blackberry mojito was really tasty and fresh. Then came the appetizers which I think were the highlight of our dining experience. The buffalo shrimp deviled eggs were just out of this world and so unique! I really loved the biscuits because they were small, dense, moist, and just everything of the sort. The jam butter that accompanied the biscuits just took the whole flavor up a notch. I thought the fried green tomatoes were nicely crisp and they were topped with pimento cheese and chow chow. We loved the appetizers! Next came the entrees and I believe we were all just kind of underwhelmed with the flavors that were happening. I got the crab cake benedict and the crab cakes were small and very bready. The potato medley was good but I added salt/pepper to everything. I just felt like the dish lacked seasoning. The service, cocktails, and appetizers were great! Birthday dinner for a friend last night was amazing! To start, we ordered a bottle of wine (a red blend) which was delightful. We settled on two appetizers after consulting with our server, Kristin, who was most helpful. We loved the Wild Mushroom Arancini and the Korean "Beef" Potstickers looked more like empañadas but were delicious. We split an entree, the very tasty Scallop Pasta Primavera. The serving sizes were all large and to go boxes were the next order before we finished our meal with the Blood Orange Key Lime Cheesecake. It was every bit as good as the rest of the meal. The atmosphere was upscale casual and energetic. We will certainly be back! read more

We arrived for their Thanksgiving Buffet only for them to be out of food, but still charged us full price. We contacted them about our disappointment, and they promised it was a rare occurrence, but they would refund our money with gift cards and provide us a new meal for free as well. We made reservations for Christmas, only to have our food 3 hours late, cold, and inedible...telling us the cooks just wanted to go home because it was a holiday. We actually had guests coming up and saying how terrible their service was and how horrible they felt for us. They apologized once again and gave us what was supposed to be $150 gift cards...but we're only $50. I do not recommend this restaurant...especially on holidays! You will waste your money. Service was not good at all last night. Kind of embarrassing to invite a few couples to celebrate Valentine's dinner and receive unacceptable service. No one came to our table for at least 30 minutes and we had to stop someone and ask who's our server. This was a 4 course meal and they skipped course #2 and we had to request it. Soup was watered down didn't have any spoons with the soup. Food was served at different times within our party and we had to keep asking for silverware. Manager was very defensive when we told him about our service and never followed up at the end of our meal. We made the best of it but this was not a great experience. If you want mediocre food and bad cocktails, then you found your place! Went there last night, we had the place to ourselves for first 30 mins, 2 other tables got occupied later. At first glance, the young lady working as the hostess greeted us with low energy and not very friendly. She took us to our table and place 2 very dirty menus on the table. We ordered 2 drinks, a cosmo and vodka tonic for my husband, cosmo was terrible, vodka tonic came out pink!!! We inquired and was told the bartender put cranberry juice in it, who puts cranberry on a vodka tonic? My husband's salmon was raw, my shrimp was chewy. Just left from having Christmas dinner and it was AWFUL. Our server did the best she could but the food was extremely disappointing! We had dinner reservations at 3:30; we arrived closer to 3:40ish...starter Ms came out around 5ish...dinner came out around 5:30ish. After we placed our order, the waiter came out about 25mins later to tell us that they sold out of Prime Rib and we would need to select another entree. So we switched out for Salmon; then about 5mins later the server came back and said she wanted to "make it right" and offered us a Rib Eye...so we took that! The "Rib Eye" came out and it literally looked like scraps of fatty beef...I couldn't even believe the "chef" would send that out of the kitchen and even more appalled that the server placed it on the table. Server comes back by and we basically ask what is this? The cut of meat was unrecognizable and just gross! She agrees and takes the "rib eye" away...manager comes back and says he "picked out a Prime Rib" for us...we ask for it to be prepared "medium well"...that steak never reached the med well temp...as soon as it was sliced it began to bleed. With the 3 course menu, dessert comes out...the apple pie was cold and the crème brûlée was disgusting. Lastly, the bill comes...over $280 for a meal that was disgusting. Management should be ashamed of themselves for gouging the price of this meal bc it was Christmas and just serving people anything they want. We have no problem with paying for our meal and we did but we will NEVER return even on a "regular night" as the server asked us to do! read more

Recently visited this restaurant for a pre-Valentine's Day dinner with a few other couples. Service was very slow. It took 2 hours to receive the main course (which we had to ask for). Part of our meal was served sporadically.... All members of our party were not served at the same time. The scallops were good; lobster bisque was thin and very salty. Overall it was not a great experience. We were able to voice our concerns with a person who presented themselves as the manager. Unfortunately the manager did not seem to care. Good customer service could have improved the experience. Hopefully these issues will be corrected in the future. read more

We went in there with a group of about 10. Place didn't look very crowded and the diverse menu was a bit of red flag for us. But boy were we wrong ... everything from the appetizers to the entrees was excellent. Not every restaurant can claim to make a great steak and a duck breast entree equally well but JL Caspers did. My husband and I were looking forward to the roaring 20 atmosphere that the website promised and the live band on the weekends. Both were nonexistant. It was our first visit to the restaurant and the last one!! My husband and I ordered off the Valentines menu,which was the only choice that evening our waiter told us,but when the host called to confirm my reservation she said we could order from either menu. Our waiter came back after 20 minutes when we ordered a bottle of wine. Our first appetizer took 25 minutes to get to us. My crostini was burnt and hard as a rock!! Our waiter did not come back for another 25 minutes with a very watery lobster bisque. My husband asked where my replacement crostini was and the waiter said oh I didnt know she wanted another one. By this time it was 8:30 and tired of waiting on our food,so we decided to leave.This was a complete disaster with poor food quality and very poor service. We talked to the manager and were told we would not be charged,but my card was charged the 40.00 deposit. I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager and no one has called me back. The food was good but not worth the price. The service was horrible for the Valentine's Dinner special for our four couples. It seemed to flow better for the parties of two. For the price you have to share the appetizer but my husband eats meat and I don't so we were charged extra. What they call lobster bisque was watery, salty, and I guess because we got ours so late ... 2hrs after seating it was barely warm. They couldn't get all the food out for the entire table and we had to ask for everything i .e. soup spoons, water, etc. They wouldn't clear the dishes before serving the next course so it was hardly any room on the table. Even after talking to the manager I guess nothing was resolved & they charged a $5 service fee & included 20% tip on each check. They made a good $800 off our table and they just didn't seem to know what they were doing. my recommendation would be to go somewhere else if you want an elegant meal with decent service - if you're spending $200 on a Valentine's Dinner for your significant other yout money will be better spent at Chop House or I hate to say because of the small portion sizes Ruth Crisp read more
