I'm in Winston-Salem for work almost every month, and Butcher & Bull has become a non-negotiable stop on every trip. Don't let the hotel location fool you... this place is the real deal. My go-to is the filet, and it never disappoints. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, every single time. This visit I also shared the cauliflower appetizer with a coworker and it was a great call. Delicious from start to finish. But honestly? Even the food takes a back seat to Laurie at the bar. She's the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like a regular the second you sit down, and she's a big reason I always make time for this place. Even if you're just passing through downtown, pop in for a drink and say hi... it's worth it. It's easy to write off hotel restaurants, but please don't write this one off. I've been remiss that I haven't yet submitted a review about Butcher & Bull, specifically the bar and our favorite bartender, Laurie. My colleagues and I come into town around 10 nights a month, and stay at the Marriott. We LOVE Laurie. She is an amazing bartender, but also an incredible person. I had low expectations for this place and my meal didn't exceed them. I've seen a lot of recommendations for this restaurant in food groups on social media and I'm unsure why that is. However, everyone's taste buds are different. I've been here before for drinks when they had their Christmas bar but never tried their food. Unbeknownst to me, I wasn't missing anything. The service is always great, the restaurant is always clean and the drinks are good but the food is mediocre especially for the price. I tried their ribeye and when the Bartender brought it out, she asked if I needed steak sauce. At that moment I knew it lacked flavor. This 16oz steak indeed lacked flavor and needed some help. It's a pretty decent cut but it's unseasoned. I'm not sure what they thought the rosemary was going to do but it didn't help. Steak lovers know that a good steak shouldn't require steak sauce and additional salt and pepper if it's prepared correctly. The spicy collards are just that, nothing to talk about. My wife tried their fried chicken. It looked old and dry which it was, again nothing to talk about. I'd recommend this place if you're looking to grab a drink but that's about it. A group of friends and I visited Butcher & Bull on Fri Aug 2 after attending a play as part of The International Black Theater Festival (IBTF) which was in town. It was after hours and the place was packed. Surprisingly though our wait time for a table was only about 20-25 mins. We were seated in an extended section off from the main dining room. Our waiter arrived about 15 mins later and took our drink orders. There was a specialty drink menu in honor of the IBTF. I got the Marvatastic Ice Tea, their version of the Long Island Ice Tea, but it was honestly much better than the original. Some others at the table ordered the Purple Passion made with vodka and Purple Haze made with gin. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and complimented that the service was going well. Since it was after hours they were only serving food from their late night menu which had a good selection that catered to most people. I ordered the lobster dip which is similar to a spinach artichoke dip but much better and it was loaded with nice chunks of lobster which was served with tortilla chips. However, I reviewed their full menu online and I saw it is normally served with pita chips which I would have preferred since the tortilla chips were quite thin and broke very easily but nonetheless it was a really nice late night snack. A few people ordered the Korean style chicken wings which includes 10 pieces which were very nicely presented and cooked well with an outstanding sweet and lightly spicy sauce. Someone also ordered the fried bologna sandwich. I thought it was an odd late night menu item but hey we are in the south. I would like to compliment the restaurant for having a full wait staff that seemed to really know their assigned tables and it didn't feel like the chaos that big events can bring to a host hotel restaurant. Also compliments to the cooks they were turning out the food in good timing as well. I will be returning during regular dinner hours at a later date to really experience the restaurant in their normal operating capacity. read more

Butcher & Bull is located in the Downtown Winston-Salem Marriott. I ate here as I had the food voucher and it was convenient in the hotel. The restaurant was nicely decorated but my table was wobbly. Another table was adjusted but nobody adjusted mine. I thought it was odd that they seated everyone together rather than giving some space between tables. It was not very busy at all. I ordered the filet mignon and a baked potato. I ordered it medium but it was more medium rare. Service was ok but I had to ask for more tea rather than it being refilled or noticed the glass was empty. I'd choose another restaurant the next time I am in Downtown Winston-Salem. read more

We went for dinner the day after Valentine's Day, the Butcher & Bull was offering a pre fixe menu only. We started with the buffalo cauliflower, requesting it crispy. It was very large pieces, not crispy, raw in the middle. The sauce flavor was okay. For the main course we ordered the filets with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. My steak was undercooked and had to be sent back. The potatoes were dry. The asparagus was about 3/4" thick. Not tender and good, just tough and overcooked. For dessert, "cheesecake". I use quotes because it was just sad. It reminded me of off-brand jello cheesecake filling. It was not baked and had no crust. The whole dinner was poor quality. It's a shame because the decor is nice and the location is good but the food and service are lacking. read more

I hear they have a new chef... And this review is from before the chef arrived apparently. The bartender is a great guy... He probably is one of the reasons why I have given them more than one chance. I have eaten here three times... And twice I have been less than satisfied. The first time I ordered some version of a Caesar salad. It was average at best. I also ordered an entrée that was so forgettable that I don't remember what it was. The second time there, I had an order of the meatballs. After waiting for a while, they came out and they were cold on the inside. I'm OK with a restaurant microwaving my food as long as I don't know it. This one must not have sat in the microwave long enough. The third time I had a burger and it was great ... but 33% is only good in baseball as a batting average. Again the bartender there is wonderful. The meat didn't taste fresh.. the French fries and smashed potatoes were good though. The salads at this place are pretty good. For dessert I got the cobbler and it was NASTY! Very gross. I opted to try one of the seasonal holiday punch cocktails. It came in a drinking glass and was pretty yucky. I couldn't drink half of it. The options were alright, not any choices I really wanted , but the "Special Menu" should have been relayed before seating or upon making reservations. I want to start this off by saying that the star rating has nothing to do with our server. Cheyenne was absolutely amazing and apologized profusely for everything. The first thing we noticed when entering the restaurant that the temperature was the same inside as it was outside and we were all sweating. That being said, our reservation was at 1845 and we are just now leaving the restaurant at 2035, with two people in our party not even eating. Both my husband and my mom's steaks were completely overcooked (obviously overcooked, like well done beef jerky dry) , they ordered them medium and they received them well done after waiting 30 minutes for their food to come out. The steaks here also came precut to the table, so the kitchen staff saw that the steaks were well overcooked and still sent the meals to the table. Mind you the restaurant was empty so I cannot even blame it on them being slammed. After waiting another twenty minutes for their steaks to be remade, they made the decision that they (my husband and my mom) were just ready to go home. The best part is the steaks when brought again the second time were still overcooked and completely dryed out from being overcooked. The final straw of the evening, they brought the checks and only took off $20 instead of comping the two meals that were not even eaten. We eventually got our checks fixed to have it reflect what was eaten, I feel horrible for our waitress because she was extremely embarrassed. However, I will never be returning to this restaurant again, I try to never leave bad reviews, but for the prices and the issues I could not help doing so. An Applebees had better service than this "steakhouse"... I took my family here and it was a disaster. We ordered two bottles of wine and the servers don't even bother to pour the wine into your glass, simply give it to the person that orders it and walk away, keep in mind this is a "steakhouse." I also had to remind the server to bring us the bottle we ordered after waiting for what felt like an eternity. We waited over an HOUR for our food (half the plates to came out cold), in the meantime our entire table was dying of heat which we asked multiple times to turn down. My wife is constantly cold and never complains about the heat, which in this restaurant she did. While waiting and dying of heat it was extremely difficult to get the servers attention for a simple glass of water to parch our thirst from the heat (wish I was exaggerating) Once our entrees finally got to the table we were extremely cluttered as they did not even bother to clear our appetizers, keep in mind they had an hour to do so. They never changed the silverware nor the glasses of wine when they brought a different bottle. When we finally got our check, the server had quietly slapped an auto-gratuity of 22% on the bill! Industry standard is 18% for auto-gratuity and you must let the table know. Even after we finished all of our food, the plates from all the previous food were still on the table and were never bothered to be picked up. Would honestly expect better service from an Applebees and not a "steakhouse". Wish I could give this restaurant 3 stars and at least say the food was good, but half the plates were cold and the warm ones were decent at best. This is perhaps the worst restaurant experience in my 70 years of life. The manager Jaward speaks more like a lowlife gangster than anyone qualified for a management position. That's why the restaurant is almost empty at the peak hour of the night. The menu is very unclear as tricks you into ordering sides that costs more than the actual steak. Lobster Mac and cheese was pricey but the noodles were precooked and soggy and then mixed with the most bland cheese sauce. I had to put a ton of salt in it to make it edible. It was then poured into a hot dish and sprinkled with bread crumbs to give the appearance that it was baked. I should have sent it back but I was hungry and it was too expensive to not eat. My 1st experience at Butcher & Bull could have been better. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, but the food wasn't amazing like at other steak houses. To be fair- we didn't order a steak. We ordered buffalo cauliflower bites which had WAY too much sauce on them almost trying to hide the fact that the 'meat' was cauliflower. Then, my steak sandwich was made medium, which was tasty, but there was nothing else on the sandwich and the bread was too thick that it overpowered the meat! I couldn't finish a decent size sandwich because the bread filled me up. Also, might want to add in more toppings on this sandwich aside from just cheese and like two onion slices.... Our wine choice was great, and my friend's food was honestly better than mine! She chose meatless options if that tells you anything. I ordered the pork belly appetizer and hamburger to celebrate my birthday meal. I originally came here to eat the beef tartare, which was not an option. The pork belly has wonderful flavors. However, I feel as if they overcooked the pork. The burger was delicious. A great combination of elk, bison, and wagyu. You can taste the bison throughout, and the patty was dripping with juice. I ordered medium well, but it did come out well done. Still, no flavor or juice was lost. The fries definitely needed some work. I found this meal to be a lot of fun and very good service. We were here for a business meal and we got a variety of items. Personally, I got the carrot soup and Caesar salad as a starter and both were quite good. The Caesar was top notch and many commented that it was one of the best that they have had, who da thunk it? The carrott soup def has a kick to it but it was smooth and pleasant. The waffle fry poutine was very good and we shared it as a table, it went quick. My husband and I went to Butcher & Bull tonight to celebrate Valentine's and my upcoming birthday. We shared the charcuterie and cheese board and a bread basket. I ordered the arugula salad, wagyu tenderloin and asparagus. My husband had the Caesar salad, NY strip and mashed potatoes. So before I give my opinion on the food let me share about our experience. The server was friendly but only semi attentive. Our salads came out after a very long wait and about 10 minutes before the charcuterie board. After another very long wait my steak came out literally ice cold. With apologies it was taken back and I again had to wait a significant amount of time before I got another. At no time was anything offered to make up for the issues with our service or the food being cold. Not even a free bread basket or offer of dessert. The food was good quality. The charcuterie board and my arugula salad were amazing. The steak was good but I've had better other places. My husband felt the mashed potatoes were terrible, not flavorful or memorable in any way. We definitely won't go back. Our bill was $150 and experience wasn't worth the cost. read more

This was my 1st visit back since they became Butcher and Bull. The re do of the restaurant was very nice and I like how much lighter it was inside. I had one of the bourbon cocktails which was excellent. They even make their own larger ice cubes so your drink does not get watered down. I was there for an event so I tried several courses. Quick Summary: Decent, over-priced food in an adequately pleasant environment. Details Food: we ordered the charcuterie appetizer, a ribeye steak, and short ribs. The appetizer was ok, but could have been far better. The short rib was good but dry; however there was a good reason for that (see service). Service: firstly, upon informing the waitress about my wife's gluten intolerance, she immediately investigated what on the short ribs might effect her--which was the gravy. That's why her ribs were dry. When they brought the food out, the other waitress asked who had the gluten allergy to ensure proper delivery as someone else ordered the same thing. Great job! On the other hand, they gave a little too much space. Service was their best point. Ambiance: The environment was pleasant with a little foot traffic through but not much. The chairs were comfortable. The table was a good size for four. Price: it was pretty average for hotel pricing which is to say it was overpriced. I could have gone to Outback Steak House and gotten a steak of similar or even superior quality for about half the price.
