About a week later, my check engine light came on. I took the car to the local BMW dealership, where it sat for over a month without resolution, despite the fact that I had bought and serviced the car there. One of the techs at the dealership recommended Rhein West, calling them the best in town, if not the entire state of Texas. Initially, I was hesitant, as I typically avoid independent mechanics. However, after having the car towed to Rhein West, they spent just one day troubleshooting, contacting BMWNA, BMW in Europe, and Dinan Engineering in California.
