I like coming here for my classroom decor, but I'd rather go to Target or Michael's. Joann's always has adorable decorations for holidays, and when the seasons are changing, they have some great clearance prices. However, when there are no sales, the prices are pretty expensive. Also, make sure to check what you are buying because many of the items on the shelf are broken in some way. Idk if customers break things and then just put them back on the shelf or if workers do, but most of the time, crap is broken. I've been coming here since I was a very young kid, and I used to hate coming here. I still wouldn't say I enjoy it now, but I don't dread it like I used to. It gets annoying because the employees are a hit or miss. Some are super rude and seem to hate their lives, others will do anything in their power to help you. I worked in retail before, and I know that sometimes bad days happen, but don't take it out on your customers. Once I asked for something glass to be wrapped and the old lady at the register glared at me and said they ran out of paper... you're a craft place that sells tons of glass... This place is never too busy, but sometimes when it does get a little busier, they have lines, but only one cashier. I've never seen a cashier ever call for backup at the register, even when they are drowning with customers. read more

I actually really enjoyed browsing the wares at this peaceful but slightly understaffed Jo-Ann's. I find it really strange that Chicago hosts such few and far between fabric stores, but this one in Chicagoland is a pretty okay find. Note to the frugal: be sure to look on your phone for coupons on their website before you checkout, they nearly always have some code or deal for you to use that will cut a significant chunk out of your total. If you have any sewing projects planned, this is the place to go. Fabrics galore, from their generous quilting section in the front to more specific laces and fashion fabrics in the aisles towards the back. Knitware to gingham to nursery-favorites, you will find them here. The prices are a little bit high for me, but again, make use of those online coupons. Service is pretty efficient, they have a little bell in case you need immediate service. The attendant quickly cut my fabrics to size and even gave me an end-of-yard discount on one of them. The store is well-kept, brightly lit, and also sells other sewing and craft necessities. You can find rotary cutters, zippers, lace fringe, and even some quite professional-grade sewing machines here. My only complaint is that the store is as bit difficult to get to the first time around. The sign is either really difficult to see from the road or completely non-existent. The parking is generous, but the area is quite deserted so if you're looking for other stores to browse nearby you might be out of luck. I quite enjoyed this Jo-Ann's, especially given the wide variety of fabrics. read more

I've come for t-shirt material, yarn, and buttons and have easily found everything I wanted. All of the employees I've come across have been friendly and helpful. I was welcomed upon entering and have been offered help as I wandered the isles. The layout of the store makes sense and the isles are well-organized. I found the selection of fabrics, yarn, and buttons to be far superior than either Hobby Lobby (who didn't have fabric or yarn at all) or Wal-Mart. Jo-Ann's also had many other helpful supplies such as Sharpie markers for writing on ceramics. The first time I went to Jo-Ann's I signed up to get coupons in the mail. The second time I went, I brought the coupons and the gentleman at the register told me about how I could look up a coupon on my smart phone for extra savings. In fact, he encouraged me to sign up for SMS (text message) and email coupons. He explained that I could have saved much more money by combining all of the different coupons (mail, SMS, email, website, AND smart phone app). read more

MANAGER told us we can return ANYTHING to Jo-Ann's. (see second paragraph below) I visited this location with my mom about two months ago and the manager was very helpful, however she did not seem happy working there. When we were checking out, she was very rude to her employee. We were using a coupon, and the cashier rang it up wrong and then the system would not take her coupon. She was very rude to the checkout woman. I visited again the next month to return the material we had left over because she gave us at least double of what we needed. When I asked the cashier to return it, she told me to go to the fabric counter, which I did. While I was waiting the woman was on the phone with a client taking an order for delivery. It took about 30 minutes to return two pieces of fabric because they had no way to identify which material was which! Then I saw on the receipt she rang me up for two remnants and we only had one. Anyways then I got to the cashier again, and she told me they don't return partials! SO the also called the manager, along with the fabric counter woman, and had it okayed. Cashier told me that they only take returns if THEY cut it... How ridiculous! If they cut it, then they'll take it back... so you want me to come 20 mins and have you cut my material into all the pieces I need? Seems ridiculous. Anyways, they took it back and I was a happy camper. Sad all the Fabric stores are disappearing! They should hire people who are happy to work there or treat their employees better so they want to work there, that way it makes people want to come back and keep this location in business! I used to work at a Jo Ann's smallest store in the country and I mean SMALLEST. We had fabric up to the ceiling no more than three people working on the busiest day and somehow we had customer service a billion times better then this place. This store had so many empty shelves it made me sick. The staff sucked. They were empty and had at least 8 employees and none of them were helpful. Me and my best friend were shopping for material to make cute cocktail dresses. But when we picked out our fabric we had to wait in line for a long time for our fabric to be cut and since I went there an hour before they closed, they stopped any kind of organizational methods, so when we picked a ticket to save our place in line while we browsed; no numbers were called out, hence the reason we just ended up going last. It just wasn't worth the hassle. On top of that as we were browsing for accessories an employee walking by and putting up the new sales for the next day rudely made a comment about us making sure we DON'T look at the sales for tomorrow - like we really cared anyway, but the random rudeness was what startled me. I do like what they have in stock though, when it's actually stocked, but if I had a smaller mom and pop shop in my area I would definitely prefer it over Jo-Ann Fabrics. read more

Got up to the checkout, one person ringing, 8 or 9 people in line! Seriously? Come on! Clerk should have enough brains to call for help when it is needed. This is one of the worst craft stores I've been to. First of all, it's kind of hard to see, set back far from the road, and the front of the store faces the parking lot, not the road. The parking lot felt sketchy. I wouldn't want ot be there alone at night. The store itself is one of the smaller ones, and their inventory reflects that. I feel like they didn't have a lot to offer. Good luck trying to find someone to help you. I was looking for something specific, couldn't find it, and couldn't even flag down anyone to ask. The fabric section is tiny - the smallest stock I've seen at any JoAnn's, and everything was completely disheveled. Good luck finding anything. We were lucky and saw the fabric we had been searching for, but it was the end of the roll. We took it up to the counter, waited forever, and asked if there was more. The employee left and went in the back and said there was no more. Bummer, but understandable. We did still get batting and foam cut for us. The foam is not cheap, and we were a bit surprised when she told us the price. Still, we needed it for some cushions, so we gave specific measurements. We got home and realized we had waaaay more than we asked for. I'm going to check the receipt - i hope we weren't charged for it! I won't come here again. I'd much rather drive a bit farther and head to a different store. read more

I had to wait in line over 20min just to get 1 yd of a trim cut at the cutting table at this location. This store seems to have a smaller selection & staff than other area stores....I went in after a week of sales on elastic and they had not a single bit of black elastic in the whole store. Ugh. This is the closest Jo-Ann to my house, but I much prefer the Elston Ave. location's bigger selection, even if it means more crowds. read more

I wanted to update my review a little. It's been two years since the last review and since I live closest to this store, here we go again. I admit that there have been three times where I have walked in wanting to try to find something and then walked out with nothing. My better experiences here have been when I have checked the JoAnn's website in advance and known that they had exactly what I wanted and then I came with a coupon to get that exact item. I don't do impulse buys here since the selections are extremely limited. The parking lot was re-done and no longer looks like a gravel pit. American Mattress left, and the front of the shopping center is still blank. However, the back end now has a small but new movie theater and Norridge is trying to revitalize the area. A part of me wishes that JoAnn would move across the street to next to OfficeMax with higher ceilings and more space for products. I would give a lot for it to carry more of the offerings, like the Elston location or even like Niles. It is the smallest location in the area. They changed a little of the fabric layout to give it a more-open feel and I appreciate that. Still a gigantic amount of fleece, but someone must be buying it...I guess. Customer Service has gotten better. More people are around to help and that is a great thing. As always, NEVER buy anything at JoAnn's unless it is on sale or unless you have a better than 20% off coupon. I admit that I still feel ripped off when I go there, but when it's a matter of time issues, you do the best that you can. I can't always wait for shipping. I'll go to other locations if I can, but heading 40 minutes to an hour in traffic to get back up from Elston makes that location painful even though they have a lot more selection. I like Niles location the best around here, but their parking can be painful. No such thing as a goldilocks fabric store in Norridge or the NW Chicago area, but this is better than no fabric store out here. read more

The prices are typical of any other Joann's so don't feel like your getting a better price because you are really not. The store is a mess and I don't think its just from the customers. Its the whole stores appearance. I mean the building isn't exactly a sight to see. So the fact that the inside isn't, isn't a shocker to me. Wow, I guess I should have read the reviews on this place before I decided to feel crafty and try to purchase something here. This type of business is one of those benign things that I would never expect to be leaving a review about, but this experience was SO horrible I couldn't wait to get home and leave one. Reading other reviews I'm kind of glad to know I wasn't singled out and the staff here is consistently terrible but I am puzzled about why this is allowed to continue yet this place still stays in business. Alright... I am not a crafty person. I love to pin things and love to dream about the day I will be crafty but dreams and reality are not nearly the same. That being said, I do have a small project that I would like to do to make a Halloween costume for my infant. It's simple and can be done without sewing... so off I went to get the fabric I needed. I printed a photo since there are no instructions... it's pretty straight-forward so I don't really think detailed instructions are necessary. OH BOY.... upon approaching the fabric cutter after selecting the fabric I wanted I began to ask a few simple questions about how much fabric I would need of each color while referring to my photo and referencing size physically on me... well she basically looked at me like I had escaped from a mental institution and emphatically stated that without instructions and measurements there was absolutely NO WAY she could even begin to estimate such a thing. Then she just continued to scrunch up her face, shake her head and say "I don't know", "How am I supposed to know", "I couldn't tell you", "You should know" and any number of other variations showing what an imbecile I was until I unloaded the fabric I had in my cart, threw it on the counter and told her to forget it. Then I quickly left the counter before I started bawling right in front of her... no lie. It's not like I was trying to construct an intricate wedding dress, it is basically a piece of fabric that would attach to the front of me... probably with safety pins since it would be for a maximum of an hour. Not rocket science, but since am essentially clueless as to how fabric is sold I had hoped for a slight bit of guidance from the "expert" or someone well-versed in fabric. Higher hopes would have been a smile and a bit of encouragement... you know... customer service type of behavior. Never did I expect to leave this store in tears!! The only thing I can say about this store is to issue a friendly warning to BEWARE... unless you are an expert crafter that can navigate this store and select ALL of your items confidently and without assistance then please do not go here. I really would hate to see someone else post a review on how their hopes were dashed by an employee who clearly does not enjoy their job and the people and projects it brings them in contact with. I will still be making my Halloween costume, because I know it won't be that hard. I will find someplace that will help me or just make my best guess at what I need.... They have great items here but absolutely no one to help on the sales floor. I asked the lady in the front for help or if there was anyone on the sales floor who could help me and she looked at me like I have five heads. I told her what I was looking for and she pointed me towards the ribbons yes I know where the ribbons are but I don't know exactly what kind of ribbon I was looking for there's a specific name and I'm sure she knew what it was but it was too much trouble for her to walk over and help me find it. This Joann fabrics has really stepped up their game as far as customer service goes. All the employees are excellent! A special shout out to the girl with the nose piercings and tattoos (sorry don't know her name). I go to this Joanns often and she actually remembers me and is quite chatty. The Asian guy at the register was excellent as well, he pointed me in the right direction for scissors that fit my needs perfectly. As a customer and a business owner it means a lot to me when I walk in a store and receive great customer service. The Joanns on elston could learn a thing or two from this location. read more

I LOVE this store! Yes it's small, and no, they usually don't have a huge stock of each item, but it's still a great place for low price craft stuff. I personally love Jo Ann's to buy my yarn to crochet. The shelves are stocked and full of amazing yarn that I wish was all mine. Anyways, they have a great yarn selection, and fabric selection. There is more usable fabric here than at the larger Joann's on Elston. The rest of the store is well-maintained and well-arranged; it has its share of junk mixed with a full supply of quality crafting and sewing supplies. The staff is human, and some are more human than others, and some go out of their way to be helpful. Yes, the cutting counter can get crowded, but personally it's fun to chat with fellow-crafters and sewers while I wait. One never fails to be entertained by their enthusiasm nor to get any necessary project advice. read more

I was there in April 2014. The heavy set lady that cuts the fabric is very personable & answers questions, she is an asset. The short older woman with short black hair (maybe manager or owner) is not nice and not personable. I had a coupon for 40% off and all I got was $2.40 off a bill of $77.00 that I purchased at this store. I think this is a ripoff!!!!!! The woman that checked me out was the short, black haired non smiling person that gave me the $2.40 discount on my bill. Even stores like Carson's, Kohls, etc. give customers more than $2.40 on a total of $77.00 off their merchandise. The only person worth keeping in this store is the heavy set lady who is very nice and helpful!!!!!!!! read more
