The people who work at this store are friendly and helpful, especially when you forget your coupons like I always do, they are patient while I open the app and find them. The last few tubes I've been into the store there is a sign on the door that says "we ordered too much, excuse the boxes". Every aisle in the store has piles of unopened boxes stacked to the tops of the shelves. The people who work there are spending all of their time trying to unpack these boxes and boxes of stuff with nowhere to move them. It's hard to shop in the store because of it and everything seems disorganized but it's just that there are too many boxes. I don't believe the store accidentally ordered too much, why would this be going on for months? I hope they can get it sorted out soon, it's not nice for the people who work there to constantly have to deal with the excess either. read more

Had a negative experience at the cutting station. For the record, I know very little about sewing and crafts, and this was my first time using Joann's cutting services. I wanted fleece to cover the floor of my Ferret Nation cage. I brought over two bolts of fleece and waited patiently while the woman at the cutting station made extensive small talk with the customer before me. When it was my turn, her mood immediately turned grumpy. She went from being friendly to rude asf. I pulled out my phone to check the cage dimensions again (maybe she didn't like that I looked at my phone?) and she said, "Huh? How much do you want?" I asked if I could get four pieces -- two of each bolt at 36"x45". She said, "I don't do custom cuts and I can only do two cuts. Now how much do you want?" In retrospect, it was silly of me to request a width and length, but imo she should have gone easy on me because I was obviously a noob. I said, "Okay, so...30 inches then?" And I was kinda sweating bullets because I could tell she really, REALLY did not want to help me. At all. She had a totally disdainful expression. Then she said, "I do not understand what you're asking." She pulled out a pad of paper and wrote down "59 inches." "This is the width of the fabric. I can't do anything about that. I can only cut lengthwise." I asked for 40 inches, but then I noticed the 36-inch ruler on the table and asked if that would be easier. She said, "lt doesn't matter. Whether it's 36 inches or 40 inches, I do not care. I just don't want to cut it and then you say, oh, I need this amount too, and then the fabric ends up in small pieces, and that makes it hard for other customers who want the same fabric in the future." Finally, she did cut two 36-inch pieces for me, but wtf...she could have just said, the width of the fabric is not adjustable, but we can cut a custom length for you. "No custom cuts" sounds like they won't cut a custom length OR width...or maybe I'm just dense? Tbh, I felt ignorant to begin with, and by the end of our interaction, I felt like a total dumbass. The interaction felt especially jarring because she was so friendly to the other customer. Not gonna speculate too much, but honestly, that kind of switch up usually indicates racism, ageism, etc. Unfortunately, I probably will have to return to this store at some point because they're the only fleece source in the area (besides Hobby Lobby, which is out of the question for political reasons). Or I could just buy fleece online. I like to support brick-and-mortar stores...but not this one! Two stars because the fleece is cute and the woman at the checkout counter was very friendly. I visited here during Covid specifically to look for mask materials. Though the elastic selection is near nonexistent, the fabrics are still being stocked and beautiful! The store is a little sparse at the moment, but there are lots of things on clearance from spring/summer as they're looking to move inventory. The process for cutting fabric was efficient and well-staffed when I visited on a Sunday afternoon. Be sure to take a ticket and get in the queue. Pro-tip: before you go, sign up for their emails to get 20% off your total purchase (takes about 30 minutes to receive the email). Plus they take competitors' coupons. read more

No sewing machines little crafting items I am assuming are hard to keep in stock or even get delivered to the stores. Pretty consistent reviews with regards to the wait time and lack of customer service...I guess management doesn't care. AVOID IF YOU CAN! I went to buy fabric; was glad to have only one customer in front of me getting her fabric. Once she was done, a very rude customer popped up in front of me. The employee did say that I had been waiting (for 8 minutes) and I was next. The customer said she had a number and she was next. Employee was dumbfounded and asked if I had a number. Why would I grab a number when there were no other customers around?? Not a huge deal I thought, until the customer said she needed help with a very large project. They went on for over 15 minutes! and were still going until the employee finally said she was going to cut my fabric. At this point, the employee knew I was growing a little impatient and I guess that irritated her. It took her 9 minutes to cut 6 yards of fabric! She measured it once, then said she forgot and had to do it all over again, at a snail's pace. Another fabric cutter did arrive but they had to discuss the rude customers project at length while cutting my fabric (that's why she couldn't concentrate on measuring my fabric, I guess). It took 32 minutes to get 6 yards of fabric!! To top it off, at checkout, the price did seem a little high. I got to my car and looked at the receipt - there was an extra charge. I went back in to the cashier - she said, "She (the fabric cutter) put an extra charge on the receipt when she was checking the price." Have no idea what that meant, but nice one. Will make every future effort to go elsewhere - Hobby Lobby has a nice selection and their employees have a better work ethic. read more

I wanted to keep this store to myself, forgive me, but I kind of love this store and seeing that it only has 2 stars from the Yelp community is kind of unacceptable. I've been here on a couple of occasions, once for getting knitting needles, once for checking out the yarn section (current new hobby), and once for mindless perusing. I love the selection of needles (though it is fast dwindling). I was able to find a 24" and 36" cable(? not sure of the exact word for a plastic string connecting two needles), along with 3.5 size needles that went along with it. This setup would've cost around 8-10 dollars before taxes at Hobby Lobby, but after using two coupons (which you can get with their app), it came to be around $7 something. I would say that they have a good selection of yarns, but not a lot of natural fibers. A lot of the yarns within Joann are a mix of acrylic, there are some cotton ones, like Aunt Lydia's, and if I recall correctly, a slight mixture of mohair and others. What really appealed to me was the customer service. Unlike a lot of other Joann stores that I've visited, the checkout section is always friendly, problem solvers, and in general, very helpful. I've always had trouble having them scan the coupon code, but this one nice young lady at checkout resolved that issue by having me change the setting on scanning code on app, and boom, it was done. I would absolutely recommend this Joann. The parking situation is a bit grave as the parking spaces are too small. However, that should not be a deterrent in visiting this store. After heading over to JF in Redwood City to discover a handwritten note on the door that they closed earlier than the published open hours, disappointedly I headed over to San Mateo. I was excitedly working on a curtain project (I'm a novice) I asked the lady at the counter if she could help me choosing an appropriate curtain lining for my project. I won't bother getting into the specifics but in the course of my curious questions to learn more she gave me a filthy look. When I asked her why the look, she said "you don't know what you are doing and you are wasting my time". There was no one else in the store. My excitement was knocked out of me, her rudeness ruined my entire day and she didn't even want to give me the fabric. I eventually had to say to her "can you please just cut me the fabric" she said "fine, but you should come back and buy it when you understand what you are doing". I was so upset. I later looked up the CEO and read that they are rudderless right now, restructuring and doing layoffs. This woman was completely miserable. Sad but not okay. Btw... I'm so thrilled that this is literally neighbors with the Seapot hotpot conveyer belt restaurant in the same plaza! I like hanging out here while waiting for a seat, or going inside to browse the fabrics to walk off everything I've eaten. Most recently, I was looking for fabrics for my newest cosplay (Ashi from Samurai Jack Season 5, if anyone is wondering). I think the selections of fabrics here are better than some of the other Joann that I have visited. I got two different fabrics from the Yaya Han section--one was the metallic dragon/mermaid green scale fabric, and one was a green watercolor-like spandex fabric. Despite the sign saying that Yaya Han fabrics are 25% off, the lady at the cutting table told me that they were regular price, but that I could use my 50% off and 40% off coupons on them! Sweet deal! That was really nice of her to tell me! Checkout was quick and easy as well. I'll always be happy to pop inside here whenever I'm back here for Seapot! read more

This store is usually pretty empty with decent parking despite Nijiya, Santa Ramen and Sea Pot. I come here occasionally over the years to get some fabric or arts and crafts materials. I went to get a piece of fabric the other day during Labor Day weekend after lunch. There was only two other people at the counter, and I could only see one other customer service support on the floor. Wanting to get a few yards of fabric cut, I asked an employee to verify pricing since the store is quite messy, and I wanted to make sure that I was getting something on sale. The employee brushed me off to another colleague to cut the fabric. That colleague was not free to cut the fabric for me, and the first woman begrudgingly helped me. When I asked if that piece of fabric was on sale, she gave me attitude and asked me what did the sign say. The signs are messy in the store, I asked her to verify for me. Is it so hard to price check when you're next to the register? When I told her that I think it's 30% off, she curtly replied "yeah, probably." She continued to cut the cloth in an angrily manner (see photo). Wth? Do you work at JOANN FABRICS? How come you cannot cut fabric? Very upset with the quality of service and housekeeping of the store. To top it off, it takes forever to get rung up. They have a great selection and a better parking situation than Daly City. They also don't require an escalator or stairs or elevator for entrance. However the positives stop here! The employees greet you when entering but are so rude and grumpy. I get that it's hard working in customer service but I'm not being rude to them so i don't know what's with the attitude. I did not encounter one friendly employee here.When it was my turn to pay the lady did not acknowledge me to say she was ready she just stared at me like i was supposed to know to go up to her. I was actually just trying to give her space in case she needed to do something. Then she was snarky about what coupons could or could not be used. Extremely unhelpful and extremely rude. Calling out specifically the B in charge - some red head who acts like she owns the place. They promote "hassle free returns", but there's an abundance amount of hassle. I tried return something I opened and they refused. Another couple tried to return a sewing machine with the box and they were also refused a return. What gives?! Of course I had to come in contact with a curmudgeonly old woman who BARKED at me. "WHADDAYA WANT?!" I told her what I was looking for and she hobbled over to a display, pushed it with her crooked finger and said, "Here!" I looked and saw that they were actual pens, so I explained that I didn't think those were it. She sighed and said, "Well, we don't have it!" I pressed a bit more and described in detail what I was looking for, and then she threw up her hands and said, "WELL, THOSE ARE WATER SOLUBLE PENS! YA SHOULDA SAID SO!" OUCH! Whatta rude heifer! I was so put off that I didn't buy a thing! I took a picture of what I needed, went to my car, and purchased it right off of Amazon instead. Way to go, Jo-Ann Fabrics! I literally only asked 2 question about how long the whole fabric is and the worker is so inpatient and rude her name is Yong. I asked her the first question and I can tell she was being inpatient about it and after I asked her the second question she literally was being rude and tell me that I should read on my own. It's my first time here, I just need a long tablecloth and this is some of the most inpatient worker I have met. I understand that there is a lot of stress sometimes but me asking a question nicely doesn't mean I should take your anger. I had a horrible experience at this Joanns. My sister had her wedding date set for April 4th and I placed an order for flower holders the day of at 9 in the morning. They said it would be ready in a couple of hours, I go at about 3 and wait. They tell me that it is gonna be ready tomorrow, I explained to them the situation we had because quarantine was in place and so we had to have the wedding at our house and my father was going to do the flowers and all he needed were these holders. She kept telling me that they were "busy" and that they could give it to me the next day. Why would I need them the day after the wedding? There was 1 other person in line and I could see the plant holders in the store. She had zero respect when talking to me and unfortunately I couldn't get her name to report her. This is just a review for that particular location, not for JoAnn's in general as I'm a major fan of JoAnn's but I'm beginning to realize that it pretty much depends on what location you go to. I was in the area and needed yarn and knew that the yarn I needed was on sale. This location was located close to the freeway and was easy to find. The store itself is a bit on the smaller side...kinda dark inside. Not nearly as bad as the Hayward location. But I prefer the Fremont and Manteca locations the best. The lady who run me up was nice. Instead of taking responsibility for your own mistake she said the kids were so loud she couldn't think. And this was after she followed us around the store like we were going to break something. I don't typically give bad reviews... but man, people in this place need some basic customer service training. Went last weekend looking to buy an extra piece of fabric I'd purchased before (ran out during project). Asked one of the employees where to find it, she was extremely rude when pointing to the right aisle. I had the impression she believed my polite question to be unreasonable, outrageous, and an enormous hardship. I would have let that go - everyone has bad moments when caught off guard - but five minutes later I heard her complaining about me to her colleague. When she realized I overheard her, she didn't even have the decency to look ashamed and instead stared rudely at me. I have heard this specific employee get into arguments with customers and her colleagues many times, so this definitely wasn't a one-off. As a rule in life I don't confront elderly people so I walked away. However, I will not be going back to Joann, either in person or online. I buy a fair bit of fabric and home decor items, probably $100-150 per month. Guess I'll take my business to Hobby Lobby and Britex. read more

Should have read the reviews beforehand.. yes such crappy as hell customer service here. Customer service including manager needs to either be retrained or fired. Now I see other customers who had same complaints about the lack of customer service and unhelpful employees there. I would leave negative stars if I could. Brought in few items for their "no hassle returns". BS. Said my order couldn't be found, that I had the wrong receipt (which clearly said at the bottom "bring this receipt to store for hassle free returns") and that I had to contact customer service to get another label to mail my product back and pay the return ship fee. So much for the return items to store without a fee as printed on their receipt. Such bs and the store was no help either.. did not even bother to apologize that they couldn't help or offer to even try to call for me despite there being 3 employees, no line and barely any customers in store. Talk about being lazy.. Also another lady didn't have the app and she was told they couldn't help her with the coupons. What bs I tell you, all they want is $$. I definitely will not be returning and will go to Michaels instead which has been so much more helpful. Do not come here unless you want crappy service and rude employees. Update: drove to the Redwood City location after work, mentioned my unpleasant experience and lo and behold, didn't even need to mention which location I had bad experience at and she immediately asked if it was San Mateo. Apparently other customers have come to her and complained before. Manager at SM location (who used to be Redwood City's manager) makes it a pain in the bottom to return items and it shouldn't be that hard. Ends up joann.com did mess up my order but the employee at Redwood City spent more than 20 minutes trying to help me figure out a way around it and was able to refund my money back. Also said I should file complaint with corporate about my experience at San Mateo which I did so hopefully they actually respond and do something about it. read more

General statement based on observations: Staff at this location could use customer service training. I generally do not purchase fabric. I am, however, a fan of paper and yarn crafts. I occasionally look for floral related supplies as well. The selection of specialty paper is fair. The rubber stamp selection seems limited and some of the rubber on the stamps are old. The yarn section is pretty big, but I have so much yarn that I will not be purchasing more yarn until I use up my stash. Prices are on par or slightly higher for similar products at Michael's. read more

Buyers beware: Emily, on duty manager, refused to accept my return because she stated that she has been told by her "higher ups " not to accept them if it is a clearance item. She also stated that they have the right to refuse my return and that only her manager Georgina can assist me (of course the manager was nowhere to be found). I could not find anywhere on the website where this policy was written although Emily insisted it was there. At the time of purchase I was informed that I could return it as long as I had the receipt. She said it was not her problem if her associates give customers the wrong information.
